Title: The Renascence of Hog Thief Bend!
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on October 23, 2022, 02:51:02 PM
Hog Thief Bend made a few appearances here, back in 2017. On a whim, I started work on it again and thought it might deserve a new thread, after five years of storage! I think the photos on the old posts disappeared during the Photof****t debacle.

This first photo shows my initial set-up now, but I think it will look rather different later, as I progress.

D. M. D'Emfore the Mortician has just moved into town and business is booming. He'll soon be able to afford to paint his new premises!

I've been working on my Snake Oil wagon.

..and here we have the denizens of the Snake Oil wagon.

From L to R: Hercules (the horse), Splint who is Dr. Vagabond’s gopher, an enigmatic individual who  usually gets to carry the sandwich-board, Dr. Archimedes Vagabond himself (inventor of the Vagabond Elixir) and Francis Tumblety, a quack in his own right and inventor of ‘Tumblety’s Pimple Destroyer’. With Dr. Vagabond, he usually plays the part of innocent bystander, miraculously cured by the Vagabond Elixir.

More to come on this WIP...

Lovely work, m’lud. The Snake Oil crew are marvellous although you’d have to be spectacularly credulous to buy anything off "Dr" Vagabong.

Looking forward to more developments in HTB…..

Doug
ps: most impressed by the use of "Renascence"

Thanks, Doug.

Just found a picture of Hog Thief Bend in its early days, before the railroad brought prosperity (and much else) to the town.

The old place has certainly come on since then; I know some of the old timers don’t approve but you can’t stop progress. We sure had some wild times before the railroad showed up ;)

...ah yes, those were the days! Panther Piss Whiskey and the women!

In the Mexican Quarter, the Tequila Bandidos are posing for one of these new-fangled daguerreotypes.

Antiguo los Cojones, El Hombre de Sastre, Calabaza Cabeza, Excavado de Vaca, Chasquido el Caso, El Tequila Esponja, Rápido González and Corbata de Lazo.

Indeed, but, rough as we were, a real lady could still wheel her baby-buggy across Main Street and hardly get shot at at all…. :D

MaleGriffin, I think I got it on eBay, it's an aquarium backdrop.

FifteensAway, plenty of fun and shenanigans coming up, even though it's 28mm, I'm afraid!   ;)

Trouble in Main Street!

Texas Red (on the left) goes for his gun.   :o

There was forty feet between them
When they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the Ranger
Is still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather
'Fore a bullet fairly ripped
And the Ranger's aim was deadly
With the big iron on his hip

Given that the names on the shirts were not swapped to raise confusion and instead really indicate who is who, I'm rather shocked that I seem to have a twin in Devon I didn't know about...!  :o
I'm glad that at least that one is capable to afford some shoes obviously.  ;)

Meanwhile, back in Hog Thief Bend, the Earps alight from the 3:10. They muster outside Bill Gull's barber shop, perhaps requiring a shave before they mosey into town.

Martha Jane Cannary (you might know her better by the name Calamity!) is paying a visit to Roly Deschain's gun store.

Bloody Knife seems to be scouting around the back of the Sherriff's Office, not sure why.

I need to start painting some of the new buildings now. I have decided that this one will be Dr. Manchu's Laundry and Bath House. Here is the good doctor arriving to inspect his new laundry.

...and upstairs the bath house entrance is guarded by Chu Wing Phat, no one argues with Chu Wing, he's a 'Red Pole'. In the background lurks one of the Tong's 'Blue Lanterns', No Pah King.

Seems to me you are going to need some appropriate bath house ladies for that building.

Isn't there a model out there somewhere of a cowboy in bath with a lady - or is that just a scene from a variety of movies?  For sure on the latter, not so sure on the former.  Favorite latter would be Paint Your Wagon with Lee Marvin's character and some erstwhile 'young' lady floating down the river at the demise of No Name City.  A runner up, but not second, would be Two Mules for Sister Sara (I think).

Is the good mortician's wife named Morticia?  :D. And, is he a bigamist or is that his mother-in-law?  lol

Like his slogan, reminds me of our adolescent fun when we used to randomly answer our phone (back in the day before push button dialing and long before cell phones) with, "Greentree Mortuary, you stab 'em, we slab 'em."  And, yes, we sometimes got in trouble for it - but I'm pretty sure after our scolding the adults turned away with smiles on their faces.

The lady on the left with the exaggerated shoulders is, in fact, Seymour Koch and the photographer has snapped him whilst he is indulging in his after hours hobby.

The other, rather severe looking lady, is Mr d’Emfore’s fiancé. They’ve been engaged for 17 years and the bunch of keys she is carrying may offer a clue as to why they are still together despite strong rumours that for sixteen years and six months, D’Emfore has been trying to end the arrangement.

Thanks for the update, Doug. I hadn't recognised Seymour there, in his weekend duds! Of course, as you will know, Seymour Koch is Hog Thief Bend's photographer, his premises are on Main Street.

As to D. M. 's fiancée, one Fanny Golightly, we hear she keeps a tight hold on her key ring.

Apologies for the nude MDF, but I am awaiting delivery of some more grey primer, before painting. here we have Mrs. Miggins Boarding House, the Stage Coach Office and then downstairs, the Doctor's surgery and upstairs Seymour Koch's photography studio.

Here we have, on the left, Dr. Manchu's laundry downstairs and the bath house above. Then we have the dentist, then D. M. D'Emfore's Morticians and on the corner, the Post Office.

...and then a general view down Main Street.

There has been a bit of an upheaval at Hog Thief Bend. I've rotated the town 180° and started to add a riverfront. A bit of work to do there yet and now I need a paddle steamer. I'm wanting the Sarissa one. Herewith, photo from their website.

Cool beans, old bean - on the waterfront (wasn't that a famous movie title!?  o_o).  Nice to see someone else traveling this road.

As part of my - very slowly getting worked on - old west/pony wars setup, I have a waterfront planned with a few riverboats in planning stages, Camp Far West for the Little Big Horn event, and a floating gambling palace.  Already bought the boats, just need to finish painting CFW and need to do some modification to turn an ACW boat into a gambling palace rather than a war boat.  Still trying to sort out how I will include a railroad bridge across the north-south flowing river - and not block river traffic; like yours, my river will be edge of board  Probably have another freight/passenger boat in the mix.  Probably biggest building in my main town will be the riverboat warehouse.

Source for my 15 mm boats is Old Glory 25s - they have an extensive range.  The have large scale watercraft, too.

Will watch what you do with the river with close interest - both for the entertainment and for ideas to enhance my own plans.

Yes, very cool.

Thanks all for your comments.

Just waiting for a few quid to accumulate in the bank account and then it's steamer purchase time!

In the meantime, a few new characters for the town. On the left we have Tickle McScrotum, the legendary Scottish gunslinger. Then, Mimsie Slopcorner who works for Mrs. Miggins at her boarding house. The blacksmith's business in town has the name O. W. Bandy over the door but O. W. is more of an inventor and employs three blacksmiths to carry out the day to day business. These are the Popcorn brothers, Oll, Rye and Lew. Rye is known as a bit of a drinker!

Also note - and Really Enjoy - the line of wagons in the street behind the characters.  One needs a slew of wagons to make a thriving old west town appear to be, well, thriving.  Now you only need at least a half dozen more!   :D

I quite agree, I need to buy some oxen soon, so I can git those wagons rolling!

Tickle McScrotum eh…? Any relation?

Yes, some of the Scottish cousins of Old Scrotum (the wrinkled Snapcase family retainer) emigrated to America in the 1870's. It looks like at least one of them made it to Hog Thief Bend.

Finished a few more characters for the town:

Rusty Nail and Bluebottle make for a very characterful combination.  No doubt he's buried some treasure somewhere and if he forgets where Bluebottle will remember - maybe Rusty put a bone in with the loot just in case!  ;)

Hey, did I just provide a concept for new scenario!

Lovely town and figures! I love the names of the figures! Exceptionally imaginative! You have also absolutely convinced me to go with clear bases for my western figures (and S W Legion)! Well done! Thank you for sharing!

They’re a very nice duo - did you use your new painting technique to do them?

You’ve only got to take a quick look to realise that no-one screws with Rusty Nails and there’s definitely no flies on Bluebottle…..

Those bases do look good don’t they - if I was starting again, I’d definitely use them. It’s worth noting that His Lordship doesn’t use the commercially available acrylic clear bases. His are much thinner and, to my mind, much better. The acrylics have opaque edges which takes away from the illusion of no bases.

Not much has happened in Hog Thief Bend for quite a while. But now, the steamer company is operating in town (the unpainted building behind the steamer) and a paddle steamer has docked, business may soon pick up!

That Steamer Station is so new, they haven't even painted it yet!   ;)  And that steamer could deliver all sorts of unsavory types to Hog Thief Bend.  I smell trouble a-comin'!  ;)

Shall I await with anticipation - or trepidation - the naming of the new steamer?  Very cool.

Now, you are missing something - the actual dock itself; doesn't have to be much but it should "be".  And a substantial pile of wood for loading on board for the return trip downriver.  Or upriver.

Reviewing this fun thread I noted in the last photo on the first page that there behind the mysterious Pinkertons is a tumbleweed wagon.  That might give an answer as to why they are in town.  Well, if it's their wagon anyway.

As always your Lordship, brilliant stuff. I really need to get my shed done so I can get regular gaming. The loft joists are really creaking with "Stock" bought in preparation for the day the doors open.
