Chaos in Cairo 2nd ed. will be released October 25, 2009. The initial release will be PDF only, print on demand copies hopefully available some time after that date. We'll provide more details on a dead tree version when we have them. In the meantime, take a look at the wonderful Chris Moeller cover for this dandy new Goalsystem release!
Chaos in Cairo, the sequel to Chaos in Carpathia, is a set of fast-play rules based on the Goalsystem engine and designed for skirmish-level miniatures gaming. The game pits two-fisted pulp adventurers against menacing supernatural creatures and their minion set against the backdrop of 1920’s Egypt. The book contains four new warbands (Mummies, Archaeologists, Cultists and The Sons of Ra), six new scenarios, rules for vehicles and mounted models and new weapons, traits and combat maneuvers. Chaos in Cairo is a complete, stand-alone game and is compatible with Chaos in Carpathia, allowing players to mix and match warbands, weapons and scenarios from both books.
We know this one has been a long time coming. Thanks for your patience and we hope you'll agree with us that the long wait has been worth it!

Interesting. Can it be adapted for solo play without too much hassle?
-
Wooohooo!! Any chance I'll be able to pick up a printed copy at Fall In?
It's been a long wait.
-
Lee was talking about having a handful of books for Fall-In. We shall see...
-
Squeee!!! :-*

Good news, this was a long project and I am happy that it finally comes out!
BIG sales to you Scott! :)
-
Thanks, folks! Lee Howard was the man on this one--he made it happen!
I should add that the PDF will cost $10.95 USD, and the book is 100 pages counting the covers.
Thanks!

Not really sure. We've never tried it solo, so I imagine you'd have to do some work setting things up. I think it could be done if you want to put the work in.
Hope this helps!

I hope you come up with a scheme wherein we can pre-order the print edition and get the .pdf immediately included in the print price. I don't want to wait to read the rules, but definitely want the print edition.

Roll-on October 25th.

Good luck! I know folks are going to really enjoy this!
:)

Great !
I was waiting since early 14th century ;)

Just Downloaded my copy from Sabers Edge. This looks really great! The new warbands & character stats fit exactly with a lot of the other West Wind Egyptian Cultists & Mummy models I already have. A great Birthday present for myself.

Not to promote any kind of competition or anything, but is the Goalsystem comparable to Rattrap's .45 Adventures? I already have that series, but I'm always on the lookout for more pulpy goodness.
-
I'm having a bit of pickle trying to find an online store selling the PDF. DriveThruRpg.com doesn't have it, nor do the Blue Moon Manufacturing site and Old Glory site. Is Saber the only place it is avalible through?
-
You can also get it here:

Although I just checked the site and don't see it yet. Should be there soon, I should think.

Competition is good. No reason to feel bad about it. :)
I am not sure how the new Chaos is, but the old one was based around pre-generated groups (these matched up with the figures available from Blue Moon). There was no system for building your own characters. Also, the goalsystem I believe is based around the multiple d6 approach where you accumulate d6s based on skills and abilities and other factors. You roll all of them at once.
It's very popular in Supersystem so I assume the "Chaos in..." titles are just as popular.

I'll keep an eye out for it then, that site has a Goalsystem Fantasy listed that I may pick up too.

Lee\Scott - Glad you got there in the end!! :) K

Thanks! I would be remiss in not thank Karl Perrotton, who kicked so much ass on the layout. Thanks, Karl!

Just glad you managed to get it out there! :)

No, it's quite different. It doesn't need a game master, the scenarios in the books are made for battles between warbands. It's works with more models than Rattrap, usually around 7-14. You have froce lists to choose your warband from. It's faster and more about fighting action, usually played on a 4x4 table. Figures move around 10" when running and cover ground pretty fast.
I think it's a nice addition to .45 when you want to use your characters for slightly bigger battles.
It's a great book, better than Carpathia I'd say. Great characters in the warbands and the vehicle rules are also very good.

As the designer of Cairo, I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for the compliments and apologize for the ill-timed computer crash that made me delay posting here.
Folks have been asking for a character building points system since we released Chaos in Carpathia so we're going to get to work on that and we'll have a download available soon on the Blue Moon site. All I ask is a little patience as we have a convention coming up and we're swamped with work right now.
I would be curious to find out what folks think of the vehicle rules. We playtested them pretty thoroughly but there always seems to be something we missed so let us know.
Before I forget, big thanks to:
Scott Pyle for coming up with the Goalsystem engine and getting me enthused about this project,
Tom Weiss and Agis Neubaur for playtesting and the use of Tom's excellent photos!
Karl Perrotton for his amazing layout work. I'd like to take the credit for how good the book looks but it's all Karl's work, believe me.
I will be happy to answer questions and welcome any feedback, positive and negative so feel free to post away.

Hmm, no character design system is a bit of a turn-off... how many characters/archetypes are available for each warband?
-
There are 4 Warbands, Archaeologists, Cultists, Swords of Ra and Mummies.
Each warband has a mandatory leader and three or four minor characters that vary in number (usually 1-3 but some types are unlimited in number). Each warband can also recruit a henchmen group unique to that warband.
There are also Special & Unique characters that must recruited and paid a retainer to stay with the warband. Special characters include Bedouin Guide, Big Game Hunter, Street Urchin, etc. Unique characters are personalities from the Chaos In Cairo first-edition game and include Baron von Draken and Johnathon Nestor. As an added twist, a warband that recruits the Unique character Jean-Claude DuBois also has the option to hire a henchmen group of French Foreign Legionnaires.
Several archtypes are relatively similar (the bodyguards, soldiers of fortune and Swords of Ra fighters, for instance) but you end up with around 24 different archetypes to use in the game.
-
Thus far I've only seen CiC available from Sabre's Edge. Is that it? (No problem; just curious.)

It is also available from Wargame Downloads:

Generally speaking, for the Carpathia/Cairo version of the game, Agility costs 3
pts. per die, all other attributes should be 2 pts. per die. Most special traits
can either be valued by the die (usually 2 pts. per), or have a flat cost between
3-5 pts. Further uses of single use traits should cost around 2 pts.
Hope this helps!

I am a long-time friend of Scott and Lee and a playtester of the various Chaos games. Having said that, I found it incredible easy using the guidelines Scott posted above to come up with new characters. In fact I created entire factions and new traits to cover French and Indian / AWI (colonist versus Indian) gaming. http://downloads.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/Drums-download-page.html (http://downloads.bluemoonmanufacturing.com/Drums-download-page.html)

Thanks Lee! It was a pleasure!!

From my experience making characters using my personal points driven design system I'd say the best way to designs your characters is common sense. The game is too complex to create a realy working design system based on points cost and you need to playtest warbands anyways to see if they work on the table.
-
Good point, Mike,
As we've explained to folks asking for a build system in the past, we still end up fudging some of the points values to balance out the model. While the majority of CiC characters' points values will add up correctly, several have had points added or removed for play balance.
-
I ended up purchasing both Chaos in Cario and Goalsystem Fantasy. Some of the point build options that were left out of CiC look like they were included into GSF. Quite lovely books. Currently working on some warbands for the former. :)

I was wondering if the Goalsystem and related games have rules to support campaign play, particularly in the style of Mordeim (ie, a lot of different random events and discoveries tied in to warband advancement)

The first version of the Supersystem had that, not sure about the two subsequent ones. There was maybe a dozen diffrent scenarios, with a table of random events for each one. It also had advancement rules where models would gain additional build points after every match.
While I know Chaos in Carpathia contains the scenario rules for campaign play, I'm unsure about random events or character advancement.

"While I know Chaos in Carpathia contains the scenario rules for campaign play, I'm unsure about random events or character advancement."
Cairo & Carpathia have optional Random Events that can occur during scenarios. As Characters gain experience, experience points can be traded in for rolls on the advance tables.
