Title: How to scale 15mm models down to 10mm for 3d printing?
Post by: ulverston on 05 November 2022, 06:42:39 PM
Hi Chaps,

My math is awful and I wondered how would one scale a 15mm STL down to 10mm? I am guessing to print it at around 60%? A more accurate figure would be much appreciated.

I have some free STLs of British Landrovers, Landrover Ambulances that I would like to print for a mate as our careers ended when the Gulf 11 started.... he may just remember sleeping in those ambulance Landies!

I have googled the life out of this with no definitive answer so if anyone has already done this your experience would be very useful.

Thanks

You want to scale at 10/15 = 67%

If you can check the size in the 3d software then you can compare this to the real world size too. As both 10mm and 15mm aren’t really scales - but 10mm is usually regarded as 1/150 scale. Do you have other vehicles are figures you are trying to match to, if so knowing the manufacturer might help.

Thanks, the vehicle STLs that I have are free by Bergman(?) and are meant to be 15mm. My friend already has a 10mm collection and as neither of us are scale modellers anywhere "near enough" will work. Printing these STLs out at 50% would give a 7.5mm scale no? So I was working on 60% being pretty close.... though in truth I am just guessing. There are some calculations on line to do this but .... it would be easier to find someone who has already done this

I personally do not use percentages as I find them misleading.
I use MS 3D builder to import the vehicle or any other model then create a 15 or 18mm x 10 x 10 block or in your case 10mm & eyeball them.

If it looks right then it should print out right.
Hope this helps

Bergman's models are pretty reliably 1:100 scale, so scaling them to 66.6% will reliably give you 1:150, or 69.5% for 1:144.
