Title: Tap's Workbench
Post by: Spinal Tap on November 15, 2022, 08:20:06 AM: So I have just completed my latest project, an anthropomorphic warband and NPC's for Rangers of Shadow Deep and feel like I need a challenge and to do something different.

I've been admiring much of the 28 Mag stuff, Sludge, Turnip 28, Inquisimunda etc., all of which seem to involve skills I haven't acquired yet.

Kit bashing, Greenstuff, airbrush, textures, oil paints - those sort of things.

So I reckon it's time for a go and I'm going to jump in head first, recording my progress on here as I go.

I have a few bits from abandoned projects in the past so I should have plenty of willing subjects to work on.

Told my sons about the project and one said 'So you're going to become Sid from Toy Story?'

So first up I have taken an Abomination from Zombicide Invader, cut him in half and attached him to the legs from a DuneCrawler with epoxy resin.

Greenstuffed a midsection and tidied up a few bits so he's now ready to move on to adding details.

Suppose I better start working on my photography skills too judging by the quality of these pictures.

It looked great when I went to bed last night but odd this morning, when I looked closer it's like the plastic of the Zombicide mini has reacted and it was really sticky, nearly all the detail is gone now I've cleaned it up.

Maybe use a different primer next time.

It looked pretty similar after a day still but about 1mm of the surface was soft and mushy; I suspect the varnish was penetrated by the oil or white spirit and reacted with the plastic.

However, I do like the colours and will be using it for some Turnip28 type mounted troops for the horses.

Have commenced a test piece this week using a Conquest Games Medieval Knight with some Warlord Landsknecht parts and some greenstuff.

Also wanted to use a pig I had from a toy shop so have put together another knight with a variety of parts from different sprues, some kitchen roll, greenstuff, and toothpick for tusks.

Must admit I'm really enjoying pottering about with no real focus, makes a change from having a project with a (self imposed) timeframe to keep to.

I am continuing with my Dungeon project too but, again, this has no timeframe but I have build and primed a few torture devices this week.

I'm especially pleased with how the pig's skin turned out.

Knight on horse has blocked in acrylics ready for a quick varnish before painting with oils.

Painted the dungeon furniture and that's ready to go into the Perilous Dungeons now.

Here's the next instalment.

So I wanted to create a Leshy, protector of the forests, and had a GW Daemon Prince in mind as the basis for the conversion.

Removed all armour and iconography from the limbs and torso (as the 10 plus cuts to my fingers can confirm), removed axe and reshaped hands, shortened bony spikes, filled in wing attachment points on back, removed clawed feet and 'greenstuffed' hooves, added fur, carved front and rear loincloths from a single piece including removing the skull and chains, then tidied up lots of points around the model prior to priming and painting.

Painted with acrylics, mainly contrast paints, inks and glazes.

'Many myths exist of spirits and demons who protect the forests and woods of the world, known collectively as the Leshy.

Live in peace with the trees and animals and you will be safe from his anger.

Otherwise you may never return home again.

The Northern Woods are under the protection of such a demon, known to the locals as Gardener Jack.'

I was going to use greenstuff but then wondered if this might work.

Experimented on one of my test pieces and I thought it worked well so went for it.

It's a bit nerve-wracking supergluing it on a model you spent so much time on , wondering if it's going to work or not.

Works pretty well I think and I'll be looking to make a dozen or so in the coming weeks.

Well.

I'm starting with a mate to get into Forbidden Psalm so have a few bits as WIP for that game and will be continuing on the slow burn Perilous Tenfold Dungeons project I started last year - I have high hopes of starting to play that sometime after 2030 the way it's going!!!!!

A friend of mine writes solo adventures for the old British RPG Dragon Warriors so I decided to pick up the rules, download some scenarios from https://www.redruin.org/ and give them a go.

I also bought the Bestiary which has some lovely old school beasties in, giving me a bit of an idea; I'll kitbash some of the creatures drawn and/or described in the book.

First up is a Manticore, which was an easy pick with a good illustration for me to follow.

He's made from a GW Gryph Hound body, head from a GW Demon with the horns and ears removed, mane from greenstuff and a scorpion tail from a paperclip, jewellery beads and more greenstuff.

Thank you. He worked exactly as I planned which is unusual. I figured if I'm modelling on old school ideas then the finished mini should fit the look.

So I got the pdf, printed it in A5 then cut and glued into a B5 scrapbook, it's even blessed with my own blood on one page after I sliced it with the blade.

I think it fits the aesthetic quite well.

I love making stuff from things I collect when on holiday, the shell for the snailman in the post above was from Lossiemouth and the bark was from Burghead woods - each time I use them it reminds me of the things I did on holiday.

Reaper Wendigo as the last of my 4 Puca and Uri Moti, an archer with Revolting Smell and Barkskin made from a Poxwalker with Mantic Ghoul head, Frostgrave torch and quiver, and an arm with bow from who knows where.

Plus a bit of greenstuff to fill that gaps.

Post by: Spinal Tap on April 15, 2023, 06:20:15 PM: Whilst browsing Otherworld Miniatures website I saw three beings called mongrelmen, a bit more googling found a few images and snippets of information from D and D.

The Otherworld Miniatures are now on order but I fancied trying to do one myself.

This one consists of a GW Ogre head, Wargames Atlantic Einherjar right leg, left leg and right arm from a Zombicide Invader miniature, body and left arm from Frostgrave female soldier, packs/sword from various Frostgrave kits and Anvil Industry, trousers, shirt and bedroll in greenstuff.

I still need to do some more greenstuff work to smooth out the clothing and clear up some flash here and there.

Have a new Sigilist for Frostgrave to paint before I finish this chap but I'm really looking forward to having him painted.

One scenario requires the movement of figures that are yet to be identified as Friend or Foe.

During play testing I just used markers but wanted something a bit better for the actual game without breaking the bank.

Took some Mantic Star Saga troops, cut off arms and weapons, added bits of sprue and old arms from elsewhere, covered in toilet paper soaked in wood glue, quick prime and drybrush.

2 hours and job done.

Like them so much they've just become a new set of wandering monsters for tonight's club game of Frostgrave; Shadow Constructs with Ethereal and Construct traits.

Really must start my museum pieces next.

Painted with brighter glothing than my usual fantasy NPC's as I have a specific backstory in mind for a Gothic Horror scenario I'm working on.

An interesting take on this, I just used random civilians. I do like the look of them as constructs/wierd monsters!

Post by: Spinal Tap on May 04, 2023, 08:10:28 AM: My regular Frostgrave opponent asked if we could play through Frostgrave's Thaw of the Lich Lord with new wizards so we got the book and started looking at the scenario requirements.

Most of the stuff we already have but we did not haver any ships for scenario 2.

I was already planning a dockside setting for my slowly developing VSF/Gothic Horror setting so I volunteered to get this stuff done, quickly buying a small group of broken toys from Ebay for £14.

I started with the large ship, the major issue is that they are scaled for much bigger than 28mm so I removed anything superfluous, set about raising sections of the deck so 28mm figures could see over the sides and filling in the holes and recesses which cheap Chinese moulding had left including filling in the hollow masts with hot glue then finishing them off with some greenstuff. I also used 2 sections of card to fill some large holes in the side with a view to adding the ship's name later.

I did consider cutting off the bottom to give it more of a sat in the water appearance but it seemed like too much work!!!!

Once all conversion work was done I primed the whole thing black and use cheap craft paints, dry brushed for the most part, to add colour, with a quick wash of dark tone in some areas to cut down brightness, specifically the silver parts I'd painted bronze.

The sign was done in a Libre Office (cheap Microsoft Word alternative), printed onto paper and glued on, with a coat of strong tone to dull it down too.

I have 28mm scale ships wheels on their way from Eureka Miniatures to finish it off.

Onto the next ship now then a rowboat or two.

Particularly pleased with the tiller on the yellow boat and the contents of the rowing boats; greenstuff, coffee stirrers and cocktail stick.

The sails were done exactly the same as rest of the pieces, prime black with an aerosol of black car primer then drybrush with cheap acrylic craft paints which is really quick; the yellow sail boat took less than 15 minutes to go from primed to finished.

Inside of the rowing boats and the brass on the large ship got a hit with Army Painter Strong Tone.

Post by: Spinal Tap on May 16, 2023, 06:46:50 AM: To complete the basic game board for VSF/Gothic Docks I opted for TTCombat's Streets of Venice MDF stuff - they will also suffice for both sides of the frozen river for scenario 2 of Frostgrave's Lich Lord book.

Took around 7 hours to build and prime and about an hour to paint.

Because of the uniformity of the pieces they didn't, to my eye, fit with the aesthetic once build so I chose to do a random dry brush of colours in a patchwork fashion to try break up the outlines a little.

Test pic shows the finished pieces with the large ship in the background and a Dave Graffam papercraft Inn - it all seems to match quite well.

Have actually got more than I need but better than not enough.

Also needed a magic orb for Wednesday's Frostgrave campaign game - cue a Christmas bauble my wife left out when taking down the tree, and a bottle cap.

Recently I saw an old Warhammer Fantasy map of Albion and thought I might use the island to base my story in with no need to use the lore of the original.

I took a copy of the map, opened it in Windows Photos, removed some text and added rivers, roads and a small lake.

I know it's not totally mine but I can develop the lore, population and rules of the world as I see fit as the project starts.

The bookshelf was quite time consuming (couple of hours) folding and gluing all those bits of card but I will be making more now.

I'll probably make a dozen or so books every time I craft then, when I have lots, take some time to build multiple bookcases.

To make it quicker I don't cut the individual books out until after the binding is glued on the wood "pages". That's incredibly useful info. The ones on the shelves are mainly just folded card with no middle.

I will be using your technique for those and the ones with middles; it will save loads of time.

I moved back to terrain today, sort of, and put together over 150 books for the remaining bookcases for the museum; it's definitely much easier to glue strips then cut rather than the other way round and these were all done in under 2 hours.

Post by: Spinal Tap on November 17, 2023, 01:01:56 PM: A friend of mine plays Warhammer Fantasy using the Warhammer Army Project rules and I caught sight of the Albion book, instantly falling in love with the Fenbeasts and wanting a couple of my own but I had no use for them.

Now I'm developing my own Albion and intend to solo it using Sellswords and Spellslingers, there was room for at least a couple so I set to Googling images and finally settled on roughly how I wanted them to look.

I needed a couple of 60mm plus bulky bodies and settled on Dark Alliance War Trolls, specifically the catapult carriers so I only got 2 for my £7.19, not 4 as in all the other Troll packs.

They weren't pretty but they were ideal.

I had to cut him up a lot so I could re-angle his legs and body, remove his arms and lower his head, then reassembled using some arms from a GW demon and the feet from the Brontosaurus I used to make my Hydra earlier in this thread.

Then added greenstuff, skulls, rocks and bits; his head being cut away and replaced as I couldn't get it to work out.

He only needed his right forearm removing and his left arm trimming to provide a frame for the branches to attach to.

Using oak twigs I had collected and dried earlier I gave him new arms, added a bit of greenstuff to attach rocks and skulls to and cut off the lower part of his head and jaw.

Then a huge greenstuff session lasting a couple of hours to get him finished.

This was the first time I'd attempted sculpting with greenstuff and did initially consider building fully from scratch.

However, I bottled it a bit and thought my task might be easier if I had a fleshed out mannequin to start.

Might go from a wire frame base when I gain a little more confidence.

5 Snakemen which I needed to complete a warband and keep not doing. Had just enough paint and wash left from the first batch for these five and have put it off so long they were drying up.

Pushed me into getting them finished asap.

Also 3 Otherworld Miniatures Mongrelmen and a Ratcatcher from the same manufacturer.

Finally done a little furniture making from card and wood bits to go with the kitchen furniture I've had in boxes forever.

Made a bit of greenstuff foods and will paint in the next few days then on to the next room in my castle and dungeon.

So long since I bought these kitchen bits and some other stuff that I have no idea where they're from; if anyone knows can you shout out?

Thank you. I've finally figured out where I got the resin and metal furniture for this project: The Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company - excellent models and service.

That's where the stove was from with the woodbox crafted from coffee stirrers and twigs.

Again using resins from the HLBS Company (see Kitchen build on page 8) combined with a scratchbuilt fireplace from TT Combat frames, costume jewellery, twigs and a GW Ogre head.

The resin armchairs came with little metal Queen Anne legs which I managed to glue to most of my body parts and clothing but not the chair itself.

Defeated, I made some small wooden frames from cocktail sticks and tongue depressors which seem to have worked OK.

Rug is some kitchen roll glued to card and a quick daub of paint - the pattern of the kitchen roll makes it look nicer in the flesh.

Post by: Spinal Tap on December 06, 2023, 03:52:10 PM: Had a blitz on making more furniture and scatter from junk for the Castle.

Used a Dark Alliance War Troll as the basis for a statue for the centre of a worshipping room, wanting it to portray a giant winged vampire.

Used a couple of cocktail sticks for the teeth, replaced it's weapon with a GW Daemon sword and added the wings from the same demon then mounted on some circular bits of scrap wood.

I want to paint it as a white marble statue but not 100% sure yet.

Completed 4 altars from jenga blocks which will sit around the statue.

I've also tidied up a couple more of the Trolls, swapping the weapon on one and have magnetised the bases for storage - these do take some clean up as they're that soft plastic which frays when you try to cut it but a visit from a hot knife melted it to tidy it up.

Plus a variety of beds and furniture.

It is easy getting on a roll making little books out of paper stock isnt it. I used coloured paper for the jackets to save on painting time too! :)

I painted up two of the remaining Dark Alliance trolls as these both have a LOTR film cave troll appearance, which I've always liked.

Chap with the wooden club originally had a rubbish looking sword so a weapon swap was in order from the other figure in the box.

Painted really quickly just layering up Army Painter washes over a black/white zenithal prime with the aid of Debs' hairdryer, then a few details painted and washed in AP Strongtone.

Not bad for £1.75 each.

Though I'm so tempted by more Scandinavian style if I could find something that matched the trolls in troll Hunter. (I found from us esty prints but not quite right)

Their Cyclops pack is good value too, a bit smaller than the trolls but 12 minis in the box! I have various boxes of Dark Alliance and a bunch of those cheap 54mm plastic fantasy in my collection as various trolls/ogres/giants and other big beasties.

Read through the final scenario for my Trotter Watch campaign to find I needed 2 large mutants but I only had one suitable model.

Quick scour through my bits box and I came across the Dark Alliance Troll I'd taken the wooden club off for the Cave Troll above.

Cut off the armour and clothing, drilled face and glued in pieces of paperclip, repositioned left arm and added greenstuff.

Quick Speedpaint this morning and sorted.

Post by: Spinal Tap on February 14, 2024, 12:08:21 PM: Recently started Grimdark Firefight at the club and wanted a couple of hazardous terrain pieces to put down; they will also come in very useful as I'm planning to embark on a Fallout type Post Apoc setting soon.

Get sick of card warping when use in terrain making so thought I'd build on a surface then fasten it to the card - this worked well although I had to settle for foil as we had no greaseproof paper.

Basically wrapped the foil around, applied a thick layer of PVA glue then sprinkled on gravel and flocks.

Once dried I glued the foil onto the back then stuck on thick paper with a glue stick.

Result was no warping at all.

Leaking tank is a tuna can covered in EVA foam - this is my new favourite material as it cuts easily, glues to anything, is easy to add detail to and takes paint well.

Glued the two together and used 2 part resin for the chemical waste.

Made up way too much resin so, after a quick think, made a circle of gravel on some card and poured the resin in the middle.

After curing overnight I cut it out, added a little more sand to the edge with superglue and stuck on some tufts.

Yeah, it's a bit annoying that the 'what can I do with this lot?' piece looks better than the planned one.

Mind you, the spill from the leaking tank does look better in the flesh than the pictures for some reason.

I will also be doing some but with green tinted resin and a bit of greenery for a swam setting.

However, on opening the box I found that the most upright one had a miscast head with no features so I was forced to do a head swap then sculpt/bodge the Fenbeast as best I could with my bits box and greenstuff.

The sword on this was bent and refused to straighten whatever I tried (hot water, hair dryer, clamps) so I snipped it off of replaced it was a Frostgrave one; not perfect but I struggled to get the resin to stick to the plastic.

First upgrade to my team I chose a Grot Tank so put one together with various bits from the box including Adeptus Mechanicus, Airfix planes, Gaslands, EVA foam, a Hobgrot Slitta head, a little greenstuff and a lot of superglue.

Quite pleased with it.

I trimmed off the facial hair and thinned the chin somewhat then used greenstuff to add 'girly' hair - looked a bit more female but more like Peter Dinklage - BUGGER.

Never mind, I made a reptilian tail, attached it and called the model done.

Yes, once I've done the weaving and stuck the end down with a dab of superglue, I brush a 50:50 pva/water mix over it.

It's important to have the string slightly slack as the pva and string contract slightly as they dry.

Can wash or paint as desired once it's dry.

I made some bases for trees so that the overall impression is more forest like; these were just an old mousemat playmat cut into shapes then sand/woodglue mix, a bit of cheap craft paint and some flocks added.

Strangely, as I cut out the pieces, they all curled up at the edges so I ended up adding the sand to the reverse but the long straight strips I've cut for dirt roads remained flat.

Got loads of inspiration from Google Images and wanted a flycar similar to that in Fallout 76 but in a brighter colour.

Disney Pixar 1:55 scale car, removed wheels, filled arches, prime, drybrush green, add rust - probably an hour in total.

Looking at the pics I need to add panel line wash to define the gap between bonnet/boot and wings.

Light sanding with 1500 grit just to take the edge off.

Some are better scaled than others but generally they look fine with 28mm, I think 32mm humans might look odd, although mutants and monsters would be fine.

Built cheaply with a bag of fighters from GZG, a grab bag of plastic spaceships from Plastic Soldier Company (only three types so I've cut and shut loads of them), two sprues of smaller craft from EM4, some clothes pegs and assorted crap from my bits box.

About £40 all in which I don't think is too bad, especially as I have loads of stuff left over for other projects.

Yeah, I found it odd when the kickstarter came out.

However, i don't play, just enjoy painting the miniatures, so am less fussed.

I also have a few anthropomorphic sculpts from other manufacturers that don't quite match but will live on the same shelf.

If I may add,
get a bit of thin card/thick paper. Lay it where you want the line to go & use it as a ruler.
Also worth doing what cake decorators do. e.g. when putting rosettes on the top of a cake.
Put one at 12.00 O'Clock, the next at 6.00 O'Clock (Opposite) the third at 3.00 O'Clock (between
12 & 6.) Much easier to get an even spread. Do something similar with your lines, both
horizontal and vertical.
When filling in the squares I find it easier to use fine, or brush, point pens.

However, me and a mate are really getting into our weekly battles of Void Admiral but were short of some terrain features.

So I've quickly bodged a few things together to create them - less than 2 hours start to finish.

Thin but sturdy card, prime in aerosol matt black primer, dry brush colours to match different areas of the mat and add stars.; ended up doing both sides so there's more variety.

With nothing place on them they are Gas Clouds.

For my forthcoming County Road Z campaign I already had the zombies from Zombicide Undead or Alive painted for a previous game. Wanted to set this one in 1960's Britain so painted some heroes from that box for my survivors.

For that 1960's feel I got a load of 1:43 scale Vanguard cars from Ebay, about £2.50 each, and did a quick dull and weather, about 10 minutes per car - enough to fit in with my low detail terrain. Still have a few more cars coming next week.

I'm especially fond of the Ford Popular as that was the first family car I remember as a 4 year old (55 bloody years ago :-[ ). My parents bought me a steering wheel with column and it had a sucker to attach it to the dashboard. I used to sit on my mums knee when we went places and copy dad's steering.

No kiddy seats in those days, I domn't think the car even had seatbelts.

Those were the days. Load up all the kids in the neighborhood to go to the shops and it didn't matter if someone had to sit on the drivers lap to fit.

Light spray with matt acrylic varnish (I use an automotive one from Halfords). This does dull the windows slightly but doesn't concern me.

Drybrush with Army Painter Pale Sand.

I stop here for newer looking effect such as the Mini and the MGB GT.

Enamel wash on silver parts and wheels then dab off with tissue. Also used this on the wood frames on the Morris Travellers.

Again I may stop here.

For rust I use a couple of Greenstuff World rust effects applying with a fine brush then feathering/reducing by dabbing with a large dry makeup brush.

Sorted.

Old Marple is tougher than she looks.

Also stuck some half beads and paperclips into lumps of putty. Bit of epoxy resin on the wire to round them off and give some texture.

Post by: Spinal Tap on July 14, 2025, 06:25:29 PM: Please note that the flowery tablecloth is an cheap plasticky thing to cover our table when I'm working downstairs - my wife really took the piss when I bought it but it was very cheap.

Needed a little bit more terrain for my current of sci fi set in a space station so using an old game box measuring 18" x 12", some sci fi tiles printed and some waste card I've put together this to provide two rooms- great for storage too with all my Battlesystem walls and home made floors fitting in. All my scatter terrain is elsewhere. The doors and windows are magnetised; I may tiding them later but no-one can see the tape so it's unlikely!!

About 3 hours work which is not bad.

Makes me wish I could get back into Sci-Fi gaming again. Haven't played Traveller since around 1982... Other is the head from the Flail Snail on a body made from a wooden bead, paperclips, glue, bicarbonate of soda and greenstuff.

lol These look better than 90% of the painted figures I've seen over the past 32 years! :o

SpeedPaints are a game changer, to be sure -- in a very good way! There is no shame in using such an amazing painting tool to get finished miniatures on the tabletop. My only issue with SpeedPaints is their high cost. These figures' paint jobs may be, "thrown together," but they are quite good. Their color palette goes well with the terrain color palette; SpeedPaints may do the majority of shading, but the painter still needs to compose the color scheme, applying the wonder paints properly and skillfully -- it still takes time, effort, and ability, in spite of what the nay-sayer's cry out. I would be thrilled to game with those figures running around that terrain. Really well done, all around. Thank you for sharing. Cheers!

I'm late to the contrast paint party, but after watching lots of video reviews, I finally took the plunge and ordered Vallejo Xpress paints. I always thought "speed paints" looked washed out, but with the improved formulas, we now have very intense colors available. Your fantastic figures inspired this post. Well done!

I haven't jumped on the speed paint bandwagon for the simple reason that most of my gaming is skirmish. I don't mind taking a little extra time to paint my groups. Okay, I admit, the other reason is I am a cheapskate and buy craft paints... :D lol

Finally got these giant centaurs painted and they'll do great for the more mobile wandering monsters in Sellswords and Spellslingers.

Will be painting up the minotaurs soon for more large foes.

So sat down with some plasticard, card doors from my battle system terrain, cheap lego bricks, some foam sheet and greenstuff.

Miss Daisy is a mix of Stormcast, Adeptus mechanicus and Landsknecht parts with a bit of plasticard and milliput.

Reginald has a pigs back legs, Dinosaur legs for arms, cheap skeleton feet for arms with lots of half beads and milliput to finish.
