Title: 1/72 Early Imperial Roman army - reinforcements (update 27/7/2025)
Post by: Philotep on 01 January 2023, 05:35:26 PM
Hi dear LAF members, I wish you all a Happy New Year.

This topic is dedicated to the building of a 1/72 Early Imperial Roman Army, first for DBA (because you only need 12 elements  :)) then for l'Art de la Guerre - I was just offered the v4 for Christmas by my son, I must be ready soon.

The first figures are already painted, and glued on MDF bases, here you are:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr0hOLAN-DcI14avn-kjquh_2zFC4BKsHvhr43lb3amINNCgCHu4QZ8whCcHdZ1zWYJ8OIrcEep9MykAhN-z1mofz9K5lK4xE1Pvdei4OB3Ym3LuOZbH4VCdMNvNCA92MpZGHPGbqIK64JkXNk_g_-MuOX22xwTeBSKiCu0fXBkgTOAVizygYRh5be/w640-h360/20230101_165244_trt.jpg)
The command element surrounded by legionaries and auxilia. The centurion is an old slightly converted ESCI figure, all the others are mostly Strelets - chunky style compared to ESCI, but perfect to represent heavy infantry in my opinion. All shields are hand painted (in case you wonder)

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi-sZJpsvtH-iZP1dMSrY-FzJbq9HQBF9xl14S-PwS8c5X5qf2I11Fjy26lBWwQrVsQogOvoB6ASq4w8nVGGAgonop6eNC_hxECPn7C-wzGQqzMLYbUXSdZKPfnub5mzgYHWeCvUqW7L5fg6Cmycp_ptg3VW79kt6CxwEkSJkBHxADS-oDGiSHHZuT/w640-h360/20230101_165310_trt.jpg)
The auxiliary archers are a mix of Hät and venerable Airfix figures.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLpT9C8rYqKD95d5lyoXItbWG9HjKD5StxLT05K5fykVdlRboIG_RWdarVWpBCVituAM59HiNdrj9frzGsqGCYrBdOysPIDYxj23_d-Ri8s2c_yu31n10W_MmuNYe2z82ZWrx8XtnANHQmPyaHaKOn5qj_dablccljmBNJHjwwv6FPB7zgDGrwah1s/w640-h360/20230101_165319_trt.jpg)
I had an old element of ESCI figures and decided to include it into the army, despite the very different sculpting.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFki76hUXbPKxbHpilgBYjaq1qh4F-pbsIrWA4Nck3uYCrhjwj-6Mlsa4zZaKcLZmqQh6PXmucwkNcSfVOWAZr_kIDiql-6lOXwYPVhGtkHiq9pAtck5ZfVJdEcAOJUmpA4PjE3ZC1WWcPr-Cb-en5vMz_SA3IdsLS_DGpYbtsPO-Bdrg_mvNR5LFx/w640-h360/20230101_165356_trt.jpg)
The cavalry elements: Numidian Light Horse by Zvezda, Equites Alares by Hät.

Next steps:
- finish the bases in order to match a Mediterranean terrain
- add legionaries and auxilia for l'Art de la Guerre - about twice as many as for DBA for a 100 points ADLG army
- build and paint a camp
- paint a general on horse as commander of the ADLG army

Of course I will also need to paint some opponents. The beginning of a Germanic warband can be seen in my introduction topic: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=139431.0 (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=139431.0),

Awesome painting, Philotep!  :o

Will follow with interest. If you want ancient Germanic tribes as your opponent, it might be good to base the Romans on Central European bases. I.e. green, wet forest and marshland.

Inspiring work there! The freehand painted shields are especially good- at first I thought they were moulded on patterns. I am looking forward to seeing the enemy force!

Thank you all for your comments, really appreciated!

@DivisMal: I just wanted to create "generic bases" since most of my ancient DBA armies are settled all around the Mediterranean Sea. But I must admit that a Central European look would be great, since the most famous Roman campaigns of this period took place around the Danube. Now I'm in a doubt  o_o

@Pattus Magnus: I must precise that the pattern is engraved on the ESCI shields (3rd picture, in the middle), not on the Strelets or Hät ones.

Bootiful. I'm a big fan of using the 1/72 plastics and your paintjob on them is supoib!

Totally understandable. But if you plan fielding those Imperial Romans in their full glory during the first couple of centuries AD, then most of the Mediterranean is already enjoying the Pax Romana. In Britain, Germania, Dacia however… ;)

To see Italiens freeze to death in good German/British/Dacian weather, is definitely a moral boost.

Great paintwork!

Thank you very much for your comments!

@Divismal: I eventually decided to follow your advice regarding "Central European" base, here you are a test shot:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_xeXffSo4XL6RfBGHacGZjn0aWRJeSXCjnGc1XWF6xNbGJAyLspDG0ocvVCIEBZ_iZ-X24-og0GXtfPLdr_yzI4L6WdX9UmUQw2gbAhp_uRlSz7S8A5AIovXigybzsqU7udfPZqrSwsUcFd6Lv2IA2b70-gsscRWkal6ht5cxkrOwTUIDyP3Z-qce/w640-h302/20230109_141802_trt.jpg)

Nothing extraordinary, what do you think ? Any suggestion welcome before I paint the rest of them (and even after for the next armies)  :)

Looking pretty good! I would not do fancier things - you will want to have the bases represent Britannia, Germania and all those Danubian countries.

1/72 plastic really has come on a long way since Airfix!

Lovely work Philotep - I'm still having a hard time believing these are 20mm bendy plastic figures! Did you freehand the shields, or are the details moulded on?

Yes, 1/72 has come a long way.  Although, I'm afraid it has mostly become a dead scale thanks to Russia's war since most of the current manufacturers were Ukrainian.   :(

Didn’t know that - and that is a pity. The one Ukrainian seller (Cadwallon), I’m aware of has somehow managed to continue production.

Fabulous work, loving your project. A fantastic way to get into wargaming cheaply. 20mm - 1/72 is such a underused scale for wargaming outside of Europe for this period with so much available in plastic and metal.

Cheers
Matt

Goof evening everyone, and a late thank you for your comments. Yesterday I took some time to finish the bases of the other elements of my DBA army, here you are the result:

This army is ready for DBA, but it still has to be extended for l'Art de la Guerre: I need twice as many legionaries and foot auxilia, at least. This army also needs opponents, such as an Early Germanic army. The figures are painted already, I just need to finish the base to shox them here. So some updates to come on this thread.

Coming along very nicely.
It is good to have a matched pair of DBA armies.
You can play a game even if your opponent doesn't have any troops,
and the game will have historical opponents.

Thank you Has.been.
That's quite true, I believe it is never easy to find an opponent for a wargame, it is all the more difficult to find one in 1/72  :(
I would not be surprised to read that most 1/72 wargamers are solo players  ;)

Very nice work! I have the advantage of having had both of my sons adopt 1/72 scale, and they live within reasonable driving distance, so we can usually get a family game going.  However, I don’t believe we have ever had anyone outside the family bring troops to a game …

Oh that I know, because I follow your blogs which are a constant source of inspiration. I can play Fantasy games with my own son (mainly Kings of War, Oathmark is on the list), but he not very interested in historical wargames, but one day, who knows...
Title: Enemies of Rome: 1/72 Early Germans
Post by: Philotep on 24 July 2023, 02:18:47 PM
As announced, I have based my Early Germans army for DBA, in order to have two opposite armies for a future game. Let's have a look:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgos0mrAjhGa9H8hOZ9A82kmBYh4aCckCEL-HllwPG6MVhssl9eJcK4k2brMe2BYoROYEFHr6aseqKMX4RLtZlxYI5hRkuB0wCRhJul5U8Qu6rNZRCdtXK-21Q_-f84sHLozKPwrTmCbLB7XIfq3BwOiAvhQcv4ox1HP_3K0m8CmGcrUzzkjjJYWRD0_OY/w640-h426/IMG_1091_trt.jpg)

The bases are made the same way as the Romans. The figures come from different manufacturers, which makes it possible to have a maximum of different poses, a good thing for an irregular army I believe.

Most elements are Warbands:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2rPT6obJaC9SkKMsHtfsAJVRopWyf8Zj2OgFeuODLZLaBebis3do69xc32a7X6sJTmH9tj32O_m8TjVDa-wCTPJf_5z-SN0uFcuU3lhpP3PmN5ignpXe4aKCq2Iq7voMGurJUh4L16Tmb6oU2FyUqbWAiUcUT8MtBHkWDQeG0yBMWOiN5CuPDGS76v_o/w640-h310/IMG_1092_trt.jpg)

There's one element of skirmishers:

And two elements of cavalry (Heavy and Light):
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigIU9sXA1h9t3RKf16NjdA-yKbQKIcpCdK6MeGk2sypI7xESFqVNCZZkPUjgCXuIHijxB4QgOpMzFcOZVkhl70H7LupWrish5wPGrirNsrwtP7_WINTXUYHzzlxZCsX-qfjt4z083i_PlSJP1mtSUwJqm8vJv_vS_B4XtoY76Wcb_G35Hhqi87YRTx4p4/w640-h426/IMG_1097_trt.jpg)

Spectacular! No preference from me - they both look terrific and will complement each other perfectly.

I believe that "legionaries vs German tribesmen" is the fons et origo of the whole DBA system: blades vs warbands, +5 vs +3 but quick kill, etc. So you've got the perfect set-up for the game!

You could always introduce your son gently to the historical games by starting off with Romans or Germans vs orcs in HOTT!

Post by: Pattus Magnus on 24 July 2023, 06:47:06 PM
I will echo those sentiments - your German tribesmen look great! I agree with you that having figures from several manufacturers is helpful for achieving variety in irregular armies. Your warbands show the advantages- they look like enthusiastic but not very uniform warriors.

I am looking forward to seeing more 1:72 projects that you are working on (and expansions to the Romans and Germans if you make additions)!

Very nice! Which manufacturers do you use and how do you prepare the figures for painting? I haven't painted "soft plastic" figures for 50 years and things have obviously moved on in that time!

Yes, that's what I intend to do with my mythological armies, which will be the subject of a future topic here: using historical armies BUT with mythological creatures and some magic would be a good transition from Fantasy to History. THe first armies to come are:
- Mythological Vikings: the figures are painted, waiting for bases
- Mythological Egypt: 60% of the figures are painted, I need some chariots
- Mythological Greece: 70% painted, I need some more hoplites

And after that, I have other plans to achieve: Mythological Mayas, Aztecs, Indians, Chinese... some of the needed creatures are still missing :)

Wow, great work as always! Time for a face-off next?  :)

Yes, I should plan a confrontation at the end of the summer.

Very nice! Which manufacturers do you use and how do you prepare the figures for painting? I haven't painted "soft plastic" figures for 50 years and things have obviously moved on in that time!

For the Germans, I used figures from Strelets, Hät, ESCI, Revell, Caesar and Linear A.
I always wash the figures in soapy water, then cover them with a white primer. Next steps are probably the same as the other painters here.

It's been 2 years and 1 day since I've updated this topic for the last time, it's high time to show something new!

Back to the Early Imperial Romans. I want to add some new figures to my old DBA army and transform it into an army for l'Art de la Guerre - 100 points first, then 200 points in a second effort. For the first step, I need 4 more legionaries, 24 auxilia and some generals (and a camp, since I never built one for DBA).

Let's start with the infantry. First, the auxiliaries:

Together with the already painted figures, we have 3 elements of 8 figures each:

Next the 4 legionaries:

I have now 3 elements of 8 figures each:

And a few pictures of the entire group:

All shields are hand painted, and I must admit that I am quite happy with the green ones.

The generals are not painted yet, nor the camp - I will try to scratchbuild a few tents for the troops.

For the second step (up to 200 pts), I will need to add 54 more figures. No time to lose if I don't want to let this topic sleep for two more years  :D

Very nice indeed and the green shields are really great - I had to have a closer look to see that they were hand painted, lovely work there.

I completely agree, they’re very well done figures. I am not surprised, though, Philotep’s 1:72 figures are always inspiring!

Thank you for your feedbacks, much appreciated  :) I have planned to paint 1 more element of Auxilia with green shields, and one with red shields (they're easier, lazy me). And also as many legionaries as I already have (for a total of 48), and one more element of Equites Alares.

Thank you very much Golgotha. I've been looking at your blog to see that you're an adept of the One True Scale  :D
Your battle reports are great, and I'm a fan of the old and venerable (though not very accurate) Atlantic figures.
