Formerly called: A Scenario in development for a rather large gorilla
seems it is only almost all o_o
It all started so innocently. Just searching for a word to rhyme with Kong, as in King, to come up with a fun title for a miniatures game. Then it happened. And the trepidatious result is:
“The Great and Terrible Schlong of Kong Disaster”
So, now I have a title - just need to come up with the actual game. And, yes, I will step carefully along this path. Very carefully. Or not.
You see, long before the ship Venture ever reached New York, it made a stop at La Ceiba, Honduras. Such a beast consumed more food than the ship was prepared for and an accident occurred during the loading of several pallets of bananas…
[Khurasan’s God King of the Jungle on its way to me as I type.]
While I have some idea where I am going with this - some - feel free to toss out your own ideas. They may, or may not, be incorporated into the game once enough is ready to run the event.
I have plenty of 15 mm porters transporting bananas but I'm going to need to find some pallet loads of bananas.
Oh, and important, I don't need an Empire State Building or a Skull Island for this scenario! Just a somewhat primitive Central American port backed by jungle and a version of the Venture which I already have a model in my possession for conversion.
Oh, what ideas float out of brains in a miasma of inadequate sleep. lol
*Above title duly placed under Trademark 2023 by me.* Might turn out to be a screenplay, you see.
-
Perhaps "Dong" has a better ring to it?
In any event, I would think anyone who gets LOS to Kong's, er, equipment, should have to roll to not be distracted/horrified...
-
Received the model for the big dude today, along with much else. And now regretting I didn't order certain figures from Khurasan for this pending scenario. I guess there will be another order - figures for the local troops near La Ceiba.
As to that LOS issue, I think it will have to vary based on the gender of the observer. For women, it could be fear and dread, or salivating longing. For the men it could also be fear or loathing or perhaps a lifelong feeling of inadequacy! ;D
Then again, there is certain biological realities that might mitigate that whole LOS issue. (Once upon a time I had an inkling of studying primatology so have some, limited, knowledge. And did that famous lady really find gorilla intimacy worth a try? And, if she did, was she disappointed or pleased? Not sure I really want to know.) :o
-
I mean, you gotta get a female Kong in this thing! I mean, just think how much cash some asshole could make selling pure breed KONGS!!! Then you got your folks against such things trying to stop the love making for money. Who will cum up on top? hehe
Whatever you do, keep it WEIRD!!!

Oh yeah, be sure to add a pink bow to Ms Kong for decency's sake. ;)
-
Much yet to decide but another order to Khurasan as well as a somewhat larger order to Eureka for some additional troops for La Ceiba. I did find this item:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiROxTw5r7gxXzEY-z3kmKSvReDWUbNjgQ_Dv2A9p7VzkwaSO9qjq0MadqHvhcKpM1eEOL5OI5ZTCUKaGVwWwYZXLlY9Wl9u8IVTYzemDiuGKRbrH-ranKtAmRjclQ-Xqe0O3wKwx78P1uPKCoKnYxbeWXNy48q4xmPnBbVHtH4ASg6eaOa0WHakeM/w640-h480/IMG_1102.jpg)
It is a 21" model (per box) that I hope to shorten to closer to 14" and back date it a bit - and waterline it. Then I will need to find a German submarine to do the same. And maybe another submarine to be helmed by the chief Nemonaut, the JVS Naughtylust. (JVS = Jules Verne Ship)
Retirement just may be bringing out the worst in me! :o. Or the best? lol
Looks like there will be more going on than just an unfortunate incident with fruit.
Oh, almost forgot, the name of my tramp steamer must, of course, be the MIS Adventure. (which could be Mobile Itinerant Ship or more likely Much Insane Stuff!)
And in response to Weird, I didn't order it but Khurasan does have another large ape in its offerings that might work if I were to go down your suggested path. Though, at the moment, that doesn't quite fit but I will tuck the idea away for future reference - there is certainly uproarious fun possible down that path.

Started doing some hunting about the web to find an "authentic" version of the Nautilus, ala Jules Verne, and found this site:
http://www.westernexplorers.us/Jules_Vernes_submarine_Nautilus.pdf (http://www.westernexplorers.us/Jules_Vernes_submarine_Nautilus.pdf)
I will be following the images seen in that site to create my own version rather than the oft seen Disneyesque variation so many emulate. It jibes pretty well with my many decades old memory from reading both Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Mysterious Island.
Also received my additional Khurasan figures today from the Chaco Wars range to add a couple of units. Now awaiting some stuff from Eureka and then the 3D printed trees from a US and a UK supplier to create some jungle.
-
“Show us your growler!” has a whole other meaning where I live, so no need to change that submarine’s name. ;)
-
Received my Eureka order today. Got a couple of 1941 Wake Island marine units, a unit of Philippine infantry to be used as Hondurans of some sort, and a unit of Australians - probably to represent a ship in port. Also got a number of extra officers including a couple to represent competing would be Banana Republic dictators. If I can, I will paint those two with chest overflowing with all kinds of medals - you know the likes, award for bravely staying home while sending a score of soldiers to their death, dictator self-awards. Already have - somewhere - enough Eureka sailors for three units. A couple extra naval officers in the just received order to be overall above the US marines and sailors.
No current plans to add any other figures - until something else sufficiently disturbs my imagination that I go hunting!
-
For Weird WWII, you will be pleased to know I ordered another large primate from Khurasan, a different model, that might give me that female option. Definitely an interesting way to add variety to the scenario options.
-
Ever Weird WWII weirdo needs a big ape in their collection!!!
Keep it WEIRD!!!

Received my additional order from Eureka today - adding a number of additional units. Still awaiting a Rebel Minis order to add a bunch of unarmed civilians into the mix. Rather important to the primary scenario I have in mind.
Still hunting another submarine for the Germans and may need/want to do some scratch building of a couple of ships. And definitely need to build a seaport, ramshackle of course.
-
I got the Eureka Wake Island sailors and the Filipinos. My Skull Island project has all the main components waiting for paint. Soon, I hope.
Also, Khurasan’s Chaco War figures could work for any 1930s “banana republic”, with the Bolivians playing the part of official government forces and the barefoot Paraguayans playing the part of rebels and insurrectionists:

Enjoy!

PS. One more thing … Khurasan just put out some 1930s Pulp sailors. Here is their “freighter crew” and a few additional characters:

CC, I have all those figures you included photos of (with great painting by Steve Dean - I can only dream of being that good).
Have a look at Eureka's WWII Australian as another source for figures. Also, the US Cavalry, and dismounts, make for useful figures.
Just waiting on an order from Rebel Minis to round out this setup. Finally have all the 3D printed trees to work on; the ones ordered from US arrived quick, the ones from UK took a couple of months (probably the UK shipping issue but apparently long lead times, too).
-
That is excellent. I can’t wait for the photos and to read each of your updates. This is exciting!

Los Abajos, Conyuras.
I've decided I want both a fictional town and a fictional country for my game so I've reset it to be in the little known Central American country of Conyuras. I think their national flag will show a conure parrot riding on a burro. :D. And, of course, their economy will be highly dependent on bananas! lol. Los Abajos can be an even more primitive port - though it may also host a primitive airfield. It will certainly host tramp steamers and the occasional wayward submarine.
With this reset, I can let my fertile imagination run even more riot than it already does.
-
Okay, forces set:
The big dudes: Gorilla gorilla gigantus, male, a.k.a. King Kong, gorilla gorilla gigantus, female, a.k.a. Queen Kong, and gorilla gorilla humungous, very jealous male, a.k.a. Rage Kong (pity the puny humans if he shows up!).
The leftists: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus two machine guns and their wannabe Dictator
The rightists: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus two machine guns and their wannabe Dictator
The Anglo-American Alliance: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus 3 or 4 machine guns/artillery pieces and both the American and British envoys/ambassadors (not certain yet) - aligned with the rightists
The Germans: 1 unit of Proto-Nazis on foot plus 6 additional foot unit and 1 mounted units plus 3 machine guns and the German envoy/Ambassador - aligned with the leftists
The ship crews: 2 armed foot crews with 1 machine gun, 7 unarmed ship crews (one of the Anglo-American envoys probably involved here)
The innocent bystanders, pardon, I mean civilians: 9 unarmed groups of men and women (with an Indiana Jones and dad sort of 'leadership' (?)), includes a doctor operating on a patient vignette
Ostensibly, the foreigners are in the country to avert a civil war. Ostensibly.
The Building Plans:
Model submarine to build/modify (purchased), probably another submarine to either purchase or scratch build, maybe even a third
Need to build at least two tramp steamers and a couple of other merchant ships (may be able to modify two or three boats I already have) for the docks and maybe a U.S. warship (probably? but a small one - though a 'tiny' carrier might be fun and add an aerial element besides a primitive airfield)
Need to build the docks, probably a combination of wooden docks and stone and/or concrete docks. Need to build some lifting machinery, probably modify a model railroad one I have and use some other model railroad stuff to build an even bigger one.
Need to build a number of warehouses to line the docks.
Maybe a little bit of a railroad running along the docks and stabbing into the jungle.
Need to build at least a representation of the town itself but mostly as a backdrop, though a Catholic Church is probably needed - there are a bunch of nuns mixed in with those unarmed civilians - and a lot of those folk are going to be praying for salvation if things go wrong for them. Can't imagine anything going wrong for the civilians in this scenario; can you? ;)
Need to build a bunch of jungle (multi-use for this scenario and Africa and other settings as they come up). Have most of what I need except some large buttressed trunk trees as the 'masters' of the jungle.
Need to build banana plantation - already have the stuff, just to build (and modify some bought built to match better to my own)
Maybe - if they can be found in 15 mm - find some animals to add some color to the jungle, jaguars (might have one), tapirs, and such. Have some birds and bats I can paint up and add in - sort of like the brilliant touches done by Digits. Domestic live stock I have in numbers more than adequate and already painted.
There needs to be the main port and an out-of-the-way 'secret' dock tucked into a jungle river's mouth.
All the figures are washed to prep for painting, all the figure bases prepared. I figure this can be as many as a 12 player convention game, though could go full bore with only 6.
Progress made, plan in place. Now to just get busy. Realistic target date is November, overly optimistic target date is July - to meet planned conventions I attend here in California. Getting it all done is going to take a bit of luck - even for November.
-
I say start with the trees…but then I would. Do the buttress trees exactly the same size as I do them….they would look fantastic with 15mm minis!
And good to see you thinking of animal touches to your scenics…..you know it makes sense!
As for warehouses….laser cut wooden ones are your friend here….just jazz them up with a bit of corrugated tin roof and painted on thinned filler/pva. They would look great.
-
...though a 'tiny' carrier might be fun and add an aerial element besides a primitive airfield...
Have you considered some kind of flying boat?
-
Tarnegol,
Absolutely would love a flying boat, especially a Pan Am Clipper, if I could find one suitable for 15 mm! If you know of one, let me know.
-
You got $260 ?

-
There you go…..$200
https://www.boeingstore.com/products/boeing-b-314-clipper-wood-1-100-model
-
$200 US might be a bit steep for the budget! I 'could' buy it - but the wife would tell me, "You've got some 'splaining' to do." :D
Nice models, though, and would be great for certain Indiana Jones adventures. Who knows, if nothing better comes to light, I might cave in and buy one. So, thanks for the links.

Tarnegol, thanks for those links, will investigate further later.
For now, some photos of stuff for building my port, all items I've had for a while for building an old west town - which they will still be used for so shingled roofs rather than corrugated. I will add the roofs and some siding and use my recently acquired dice trays to be used as window and door frames (a Tarnegol find, by the way). Chimneys are a maybe or maybe a probably. I should have enough materials for most if not all of these buildings already on hand. If not, then trips to my supply sources will be in order, all thankfully local and hopefully with items in stock.
Here are the photos:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPhSaNcTqjkWLGALrJFUO6ek1WHfMzUN8XHOonIgkOD0P97Jbhdrm6SY7cyReKthDx-6wE0of7jLknnqHmv6s2iCgj_DIEiOWaQ6qmeydWDKSVAxKxFRbMghU7NX1mlBTRNH4eCqFP4lst7uBC5eLcJTTJy5VildyLiaUSqGlgY5iPf65pad4Fb4SB/s320/IMG_1427.jpg)
Enough buildings for either two sides of a street with one along the bay/river or maybe two stretches to get to 10' worth to accommodate the planned water craft, a lot even for 15 mm.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6bEYPXInFB2VGkc8pjTb7_z6w2N0cCwZlOLQYe75CHMybk8HKuzHl3lq5M8lJhk1R52vlgLy6k0aU2iB0BqLgZgNiTkqb-WzVDCz8hue6tncCKZ-eLd1Dfa9A8oN0ezRrnE2eUr2z7MtDaHD1ptYU6DIKrUTPZGczskdMdZx33OpuaOHzicBxmFR6/s320/IMG_1430.jpg)
One of the two boats in the mixture, a bit dusty from storage. That is a stand of 15 mm ACW figures to show scale on the bow. Will need to do some work to make the superstructure fit more in scale. And, maybe, cut the hull on my table saw so it doesn't ride so high in the water. Or, again, maybe, do the above and cut it width wise to make it longer.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge0QDSivOUcYeCuiev6Du7FAx0KqOywz8HF1OHwNGQg3eoFaCJD-8IQ6Ob8sFMmsON6ym2iDSp2y3SfLUBKvw_abbk2LHyehw6SqSGT2BfKapjS5d-tOcTahhDLOibKfVR7SI0T52yao_Mtx48KGNFEyeqRuB6TgBCDQt1VNR2AYGR-bO7YO1EKb6L/s320/IMG_1429.jpg)\
Just a closer shot of the figures. By the way, that same stand of figures is in the first shot above but maybe hard to see.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmu9k1cDkCMQOUDruh3y7_U5iCqanEqZMMHDaHCeYlvM07ote9Yp_sIM1IvTub_EGHmdnuLSFHLj4LHW644oTX286dbV-c3b46wo684EmkbDJIvEKPBwjdCqkBtNAGrhqiBYtLt5PCG4NjBw2t8r7YbD3dAbMjPnCZaEX7RNxjwU6IWKwI2dfW4wTU/s320/IMG_1431.jpg)
I have a full bag of each of these, they are doll house 1/48 scale shingles but I figure to use them for doors with a little additional work.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9_ypJiLd2ni6FgNqprzHv9bw-LfUYssiDheNVdrahTmYewUwhRjWmLFnQVHFJ_j52NETJ0gpN-CYhmokAAHWSgb83J8Fup4rXdxxWri50VvKUcKe7vi1Udo3IlEQmVPkIvP3SZocRDMILktRnOi63P-YF8CvV6ed4Qp_mVtQuFcLUIVOXGW8ONq2S/s320/IMG_1432.jpg)
And here is my 'stash' of die trays from Pendraken (Red Vector I think) that I will use as window and door frames.
I will check tomorrow for other buildings I may have in similar status.
No photos yet but maybe in a day or so of a lot of stuff I found useable for building my jungle, going to need a lot of that. And rummaging around, I also found 15 trees I can use to build my African iconic umbrella acacia; I'd forgotten I had them so that was cool.
A question for Digits in his jungle wanderings, or others with similar experience, just how colorful is the jungle? I know it is going to be mostly green and probably brown or red brown but what about more colorful bits? I have a bunch of stuff I can use for lower growth within my jungles to help create that triple canopy feel - knowing, of course, that there will be areas less dense due to lack of sun penetration.
I'll try and get more photos up soon of the raw materials for jungles, including some 3D prints I've acquired.
-
The thing that struck me the most in the Cameroon jungle I lived in was very monotone colour…..green with a covering of dirt. Not a lot of light penetrates down through canopy either. Stank of decay, very humid and unpleasant. Don’t recall many splashes of colour.
You’d think all the rain would wash off the dirt…but we had quite a reddish soil. The big rain drops would splash it about a lot and certainly all the low level shrubbery was dirty and streaked.
I really should go back to all my own jungle and use weathering powders on all my low level stuff…..
-
When are we gonna see the apes?
-
"When are we gonna see the apes?"
Depends on whether you want to see them unassembled without paint or after they get painted. Two of them are 'some assembly required' and the the other needs some work on his store bought paint job, too black for my tastes so some dry brushing to do. Sure, gorillas are basically black but there are touches of color. Might get some work on them this month but more likely in May since a different project needs to get cleared off the painting table first.
And, Digits, thanks for the comment on jungle colorings. I was thinking that might be true. May still add a little color here and there, like fruits on some of the trees, flowers blooming in clearings, but keep it more subdued. Maybe keep most of the color for other spaces.
-
I can wait for them to be painted. :)
-
Wow. You're certainly making progress. Great job so far...
-
Your ships have made me want a ship.
-
Photos later but I found three plastic ship models I've had for years, originally meant for adapting for a model railroading project, that will be good starting points for a couple of tramp steamers (same model for two of them) and a third for some other sort of merchant ship or maybe another tramp steamer.
Advice on water-lining plastic ship models gladly accepted. I figure to start by assembling the two hull sections and glueing in place the deck pieces (probably inverted for my purposes). Dremel tool too much? Certainly be a lot faster.
My big hunt is for another submarine or two - though more likely to scratch build, especially one.
Have some decent ideas about making the water portion of the port.
Did a photo inventory of my various trees for my jungles which I will also post later. There are a lot more than I thought - which might be almost enough! :o lol
-
Advice on water-lining plastic ship models gladly accepted.
If you haven't seen it there is a specialist tool out there for model ship builders. Quick google of "model ship waterline marker" pulls up for some under a tenner.
-
snitch, thanks for the pointer - but I suspect marking it out will be easy, I studied drafting in school years and years ago. It is the actual cutting I'm more concerned about.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggPd-ugzGQlimoBEC8fHRWjTujHCu9oeoZn4APu8zxqfpnuYz8jN-ro0nabgsk4b_uFZ0gbihu53z17T7wj9IBRZVGXeO8HStjhXUksGgafKxsZAWTcCTYqgpNWlzF_JF6wgMP4OSViCXIvyGSCubBqCbVbpw_YVKyJ22Jr2PSwDhPDzrPmFQkmfye/s320/IMG_1480.jpg)
Many more photos when I get more time but here is one of something I found while trying to find my unassembled bananas - which I found. I'm thinking those lions will make a nice decoration outside of a 'presidential palace', maybe the only grandiose touch unless I get ambitious.
Ordered some 3D stuff from Dungeon Artifacts today to add some fun to the build - and ease my workload, too (not all for this game, though).
Time for a few more photos:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf2ENErvcyfLetzyUWAGN2Hn6RcL-GWtieaB3EW5LMthiazJaZuhcOoFK8j_MRqhURQtizVXNE1KJFtITHmnUko27WWUTP3J9xWeI9228p_0x0vPiwExNoG4tHaMayGkB55wIR0WAvGyWVOz17KPyavehoCBMfoTwbzr-Vywai5kqpxs2dlntSeerz/w640-h480/IMG_1434.jpg)
Shows stack of three ship models, the Russian spy and the fishing trawler are the same model, the other appears to be an oil tanker - as designed. The little wooden ship is a maybe. Track will run into the jungle from the port.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_QWLerlzWnHG0TTDgy6euh1ijMIJP3LaWkGGjTiTJ4GonFXG_Lk31h5iJwQs-2reMgIUjV9a1-dNH4JI8xK1NO_6yzYVM_iBKIWwevIOIkj4BNI3BijbVXYdVhZCcziXhs31h55MCVEJCCQ2sYHmVJ8km5BH8WqLUsYdm7VPu9k9DdwJjw-MZ__Dg/w640-h480/IMG_1433.jpg)
This image shows the ship's hulls. Unfortunately, I forgot to include figures in the photo but the ships are about 14" long.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1U5_XN8swJ6Db7jL71pWM4z8KgGB7thcDRHgx5siYGvOHRKxndm912y3dOdxXoHpUbvnxOB7UQZDJ0hBo7L8YmGpLhFnM7uEUIDdEJt3AYHgG9PC83NtqLQlKc6RGGtu1jXPY-1PJHls8Jvaord2Y_wrsTBEUMTZowbRxcJcJ4DF6rgtaIPprnJ05/w640-h480/IMG_1435.jpg)
Above shows some mountains/rocks, all from aquarium supply decor. Just add some lichen to cover the holes and good to go.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXy0theSOLAFCM80LO3vso3Bu38P3tzcWXjTnW1sHNwdCsDvyFr7Nxt6RK-eWHSVG9IRqs5IfwtNbgrnNbwHdajvcdiqUQrx0enmT13G9NLspDqiowvT7VL40a2O6dNwBjJw1_6POCmNJ1zEuIlkvV3BtR5k96ZzXA-1ts6DmRVY_H3-X49-nOEPw9/w640-h480/IMG_1436.jpg)
More pet store items, might have been for reptiles. Again, use of lichen hides the holes.
More in the morning. Need to sleep.
-
Now for a flood of photos of the jungle raw materials:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDG3qH1GYgFbVs2u3hPUpOgkLdK8NDC-rvvMt82kEBFE_D1RjLtjRt0YiNzB4ofJgb_KMeK9gxQNwKZrtmzDGsiGqnS9k_001oZPLVxwjImNw4fJbiEgje2NtBrxRto3PxOSCqqGh2AklwxuBdXVe52R5Zaw7CV1fwcl0M78Dh2rB7YW1RFl27WcXt/s320/IMG_1448.jpg)
This is a wire wrap tree apparently sold commercially. I plan to get rid of the snow effect and use it for a larger jungle tree - and probably do something to better texture the trunk.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNJgo3wJRsR-ik4u5BcPxlAaSTC-ka7uYGMsNbA-4JKWUwn6tbcC5FJ30sKLRHUwa12Qh494obJ7U11gZxxEMTAm_I5rIWBzoej5WdMdoLgSzhV0Oa2PJXDaHs61Ly6FqftMDkXnbOiMeB2VB8UVf3C0DKXhYvx6NaujuNuk2xPvNbCEGfaL9RZ89O/s320/IMG_1447.jpg)
Above will be used to make bamboo, need to add some trunks, can make a nice little forest. Not strictly for Central America though, don't think much bamboo there.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdyuqyqL3gW7zKrTALFeAWtsUCi23cDVrDA_jJtY3y-eMKYaYoT5DMiSX6m-3oBTTeeh_r3an4P3Z3MIs2ZUUqojlriKhc1GEtl3u8ofjIa3mahNe9A_TSq8gon8CGwu5A2_nS6cSQhMtL1Q8_MgxaSKGVsSfaA630BCzLACcR1FYgIGtWwDFMR9Us/s320/IMG_1449.jpg)
Just some palm trees - I may sacrifice these to use the fronds as ferns in my forests, jungle and otherwise. Maybe. They have some odd 'tire' like bits on them so probably.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBF1eN2TLGEJPQR2hKuHIU9o-I4DekuT49fqv7Fu2k6nU5W9K4B1NxdaNzQFMAgECh7OfUeU2cFc69WceHafruYy-KGM9nRAKhZxGjuKdJvGDuidrq0h8n6hHXmwbCsFPjM8b_C9f1mXiKw5k_xRB2beW8oTRujE5amDJOQqx2x47zm_THttn8q_y5/s320/IMG_1450.jpg)

Very cool fine - really nicely done palm trees - but without bases, will need to Dremel out the extruding base to be able stand properly or create bases I can 'bury' the obtrusions in.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-aFAaZULOMOSqVxjSlDBmzo0FojcYuM3rN2l3Z_zWLuiPeCJ1_HFuwADlcaXsF0yKax1ch6Xph2_Fv4w9G_wxDBAkyjGcuk1ULFAWSasaZ5xDkAjo7fst8HxRVbPY_a-kf47woMCzr3ZkuqBikTu5jvBXORPs_hqhiBqySSYEFD8zNH8bKOHgCt3l/s320/IMG_1452.jpg)
These trees will be used to make a lot of the larger upper story trees in my jungle, obviously with much modification to greatly reduce the "toy tree" quality.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSjQgEWLkvaH4zYZ9FC7OiDIVPSQBFPujpKqA6N7qcPBKc-aUFtTzGYqGovGe5XM7xpoAKZONTBUQdU5hysAjtEQJxsQo2KbyrKtC9D54-Al23LqtQeFkSyVtXKfN7p_mO6spDPV31HMlDoSLjbZEIxNC0pJulut214r6EQVsbgDHfhbUQd2xLr6b0/s320/IMG_1453.jpg)
There are fantasy trees with faces on the far side, sold for use in those faerie villages found in plant nurseries and sometimes in craft stores. I will obscure the faces and add my own canopies. These will be larger trees in the jungle.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGUxrM8HBxh82XGl9_FcnZ-2BhlZrhs4n-OEQQZilRU4dwP2UVfYbT7nsh7ydcfYbpmoiS92Zl_sWI94091-51m9ftULEHaSQW-jrBSqU9Den08GKJqwWgCl9c3ZbC90P30JWZvkUHw6-fOdqZvNVFHjzfHyWF60Zyr2s-gJXmGY2mon7WRRJBC3tw/s320/IMG_1454.jpg)
Another item not for the planned game, the iconic umbrella acacias I need for Africa will stem from these trees.

Forty-eight deciduous trees to help bulk up my jungle bases - may add a little more color to these trees, or at least more shading in the green spectrum.

Some inherited banana trees that need some work on the coloration. Much too light. Also have about three dozen more of these but in smaller scale in need of assembly. I'm pretty sure these came from Pegasus Hobbies - both the assembled and unassembled. The combination should make a nice banana plantation. Given the Banana Wars setting, seems rather appropriate.

Another super cool find, these will give me a lot more of the look I am striving for. Might make a few of the "greyer" pieces move closer into the greener end of things.

No shortage of palm trees - though I don't want to overdue them in my jungle. I also have a lot more of these, palm trees - not necessarily the same models, created for my pirate extravanganza game back in 2012. That bare armature I will probably paint to represent a dead tree. And no photo, but have some very hard twigs I can use as deadfall in my jungle - and have some dead leaves I can use to add texture to the bases.

Found in craft store fake plant section. Remove the tire on a rope and they'll work nice as larger jungle trees. Really like their coloration.

3D prints ordered from Kobold Krafts in the UK - five of them. Very pricey.

If I were to order more from Kobold, it would be more of these top story trees for my jungle.

The above images are of trees from Dungeon Artifacts in the US - ordered 20 of these and working with the company to get more of the larger canopy pieces to make my trees fuller. Will still use the smaller canopy pieces but maybe not as part of trees.
Just need some more of those taller trees and a nice sampling of large buttressed root jungle trees and I'll be happy. A lot of work to get them to look like jungle. Hope Digits doesn't hate me for caving on doing a lot of the scratch building he's done for his jungle. In my defense, I do want to finish my jungle before I turn 80!!!
Yes, that is a LOT of trees. I need a LOT of jungle! ;). No precise count but closing in on 200 trees including the unbuilt banana trees. Hope that will be enough.
-
You certainly have a variety of trees there….are you intending for them all to stand individually or are you going to mix them onto area based on groups?
I still think there is room for a few scratch built buttress trees…
And you could leave the tyres on those trees…..gorillas love ‘em! 😉
-
"And you could leave the tyres on those trees…..gorillas love ‘em! 😉". lol lol lol. Fun idea - alas, a bit out of scale since I don't think they had tires that large, relative to the figures, circa 1935 and earlier. Maybe Rage Kong would be okay with them - as pacifiers! ;)
I plan to build area bases of trees, plywood bases cut into irregular shapes and edges chamfered with a belt sander. There will be more 'round' shapes for the interiors of the jungles and more 'oblong' pieces for the outer edges. The edge pieces will be much more dense, the interior pieces somewhat more open.
Both types, if it works the way I see it in my imagination, will have a triple canopy with a few tall tress sticking out, a layer below that, another layer below that, and then the ground on the interior pieces will have more open spaces for figure placement and other areas a bit dense. Each base may have a few to maybe even a dozen or more trees, some bases will be playable and others will be purely scenery and inaccessible. It needs to not only look as good as I can get it but also to allow a reasonable set-up and take-down time element.
Another aspect that I am going to work hard to include is to add some vertical elements to the underlying terrain, not just a flat jungle.
I'm estimating a need to cover at least a 5' x 5' section of table but leaving plenty of more open spaces for the gaming, possibly closer to 5' x 8' of the table jungle but if need be some pretty big clearings. Probably a couple of the oblong pieces will have passageways through them for when I want to represent jungle coming near to water's edge.
Going to have to bring some creativity to the storage challenge, too. Actually, a project for today is building a real human sized storage-only shed to clear up a bunch of stuff around the domicile exterior spaces and secretly add hobby storage space. Responding while taking a brief break, but won't finish today.
I am leaning towards making the port the short edge the table, either 5' x 8' or 5' up to 16' table size - can truncate if too long, might even paint up a portable backdrop for just that purpose, 5' wide). I think a 3' deep by 5' wide port might work out, that 3' depth can allow piers that can take 2' long ships. If I need more than that, I can have the port 'turn a corner' and continue up one or both edges, probably both to allow for that 'secret' base - or space that down one edge well away from the main port and expand the port on the far long edge if needed. Yeah, the latter. Typing away can sometimes free my inner creative process.
Oh, and on order are some appropriate pyramids to plop into the jungle, some in a more ruined state and some in better condition. For this game, those will be decorations, for other games they can greater influence.
A hammer and nails are calling my name so time to get back to work on the shed.

By the way… you do know there are no gorillas in South America right? It is this a big fallow of artistic pulp license ?
Funny but the jungle I described from my youth in Cameroon had one feature I didn’t mention. There was a large concentration of lowland gorillas there. Almost every day you could hear them….but we never saw them. Their sound carried for miles.
-
By the way… you do know there are no gorillas in South America right? It is this a big fallow of artistic pulp license ?
To be fair, and I hate to break this news on this thread, there also aren't any Kong-sized gorillas anywhere. :o So, from a pulp perspective, anything goes, giant gorilla-wise...just sayin'... ;) :D
-
Oh, bummer, dudes! First one of you ruins my day by telling me there are no gorillas in Central (South) America. And then the other one of you curmudgeons tells me there are no such thing as Kongs. Way to rain on my parade. :-[ :'( :(
Or not! lol
The scenario involves animals being transported from some remote island (??) towards New York City with a stop enroute where untoward things happen and then there is that secret port. There have been many reports in recent years of large swaths of banana plantations being picked clean and no one knows where they've gone, not just the fruit but the leaves too. And that is as far as I dare go for the moment in revelations.
-
Bananas…..you need to watch this fella.

They could be a giant species of gorilla that is extinct everywhere else, except on the island.
-
Gerald, hmm? Maybe an adjusted scenario one day where one of the Kong's speaks, with a Harvard Yard accent?! lol
Found and ordered a 1/144 scale U-Boat Type IIB. Cool find. Probably have to do even more work on reducing it than the American submarine listed above in this thread which is 1/180 scale. But unlikely they will be very close to each other and really will be 'scenery' so shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Also found and ordered an ERTL Trevor the Traction engine which I've seen successfully converted a few times for 15 mm wargaming. So, I can add a steam traction engine to the game - probably at the banana plantation.
Have numbers of vehicles to line the streets of the town mostly from WWI ranges but also some earlier vehicles from Peter Pig's Mexican Revolution range and some other stuff I've collected to use in my Prohibition era gangster setup. All still needing to be assembled and painted, etc.
Not sure that my Old West trains from Peter Pig will fit in - and not aware of any 15 mm engines and cars suitable, a bit of a hole in 15 mm really, what I have in mind would fit in for Africa, Central America, and even India. If anyone knows of anything, let me know, steam locomotives, not diesels though maybe a small gas-mechanical for the plantation (T scale not workable based on price and availability in U.S.A. HOn3 might work but WAY too expensive generally.). Going to have to do a little more research on Central American trains it seems.
This is growing into quite a project, what I've jokingly referred to as my "Pulpus Opus". Maybe it should be "Pulpum Opus"?

With a little help from a response in a related thread I started, I find I have figures for a presidential guard for El Presidente Conyuras. (El Presidente title is in memory of a friend who used the title for his own similar games years ago).
There is a band (maybe a composer can put together a ditty as the national anthem - remember, bananas are central to the theme):
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic_ZUpzZWFKd-XJrk7vRS4XjHsF-21ICsLiiu_GorSbozcJoVOoT1oYHcr-_L_cQZbp9Bb2IHdMt3PPFjkqx5Ioj6a5ELw_sDuN3oG7tuzKwjDg22wBuabdJaBYqlL3HiLBPTXysOlVdRXkGpENk0QsVTn6VJxp0rn93_9oYJsKMoD7i49MC4Ea6TO/s320/IMG_1485.jpg)
I was never in marching band or any band for that matter so I am uninformed as to how to properly line them up so feel free to enlighten me!
There are three marching armed units:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6rja_Hyfh0GbxyVeG6dibxliH2oSaZ9YgWGIymwvXXxA4sfzbfTzwpihjkjZATRit_ADMxXceIqe2L7joTI2F_2sVi96s8s3VZycr70BvROGV6LYKm7l0FfccegYbW14Od-KiOoLXNfwkJJ5PCc4t8-OAdPWDxFwYB7fVXfHKtTaon0Ypsn812hEX/s320/IMG_1486.jpg)
Even a figure for the guard commander mounted with a sidekick:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvZbHssm0VT1_Lvm3SEJbGtcazepsVImfkfHUNYpmNj-uTcTP6jNFo1jha8UPiSerD_q5p4lchjTgeiAbj98PgqC4WqL7E9gQ_6WZCnfdNCK7rttOVTIKo0urgjU60wr5OajTovx7k8JgSDKEZvUm6GTY3uxFRt1rI7yT97CiYUJPhrCpNuOyeCt28/s320/IMG_1487.jpg)
The odd bit out is the officer figure in the right hand unit, these are not cleaned enough to stand up for the photo:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMqMb__jHm1YbNXcFffBv_dB4Xo6Y49FP0iNTMgFAW5BJKAiU06XL3llsCUtUeMPMDhs-vyUMHFARXd0eV5qi3H8PDKJl5RFUZCqZTEMUFq7NtMmAHg0IPR90LQfZaSKOuj-eONy5eESSYsDNgRf0dimLOQ--zwUfT1bUY8TLxWL-uK4MhjShYCWC-/s320/IMG_1488.jpg)
The full guard:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj132mMIVkm0YqvXDM_ZivAdaPnNLP8ktk53gj5ff1FICI7atPWHvY7pQm5EOkxwyliEIMmb39XYOdxOMj3TkB5BBDJbvLpV0Sbw4TyRfrzygriAAPz3ofUmAUSDNaRgkIlnC0UxL8WlAxDiuYJ4UUlKzwbCdU6LMk4hKR6hCyV8ziI64Lh3YvkbF4o/s320/IMG_1489.jpg)
These figures will be British marines and an American marine and sailor (even if not designed as such) who are tasked with staying close to El Presidente and, if his life is in danger or of being captured, they are to whisk him away to safety if they can do so without danger to themselves:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7VHR3mv8-4N3t5ElgkZAOSi7AMKXDZeCwjcdXvMilE78ZESlbvGTheN3xS5IhlmOfqMlrytXLdDPPfVU4PhBw9cJqBNIQpOtAYUeXnReR7yuWEoZBKl72qrCPZj15bkzMVlTsAr5GY5U-pYA8kC3zoHiWgF9SYlEXO61bfYNjspzESaPR1xe-Tk1W/s320/IMG_1490.jpg)
I've decided the presidential palace will have to be next store to a movie theater, perhaps sponsored by the Germans, and called Teatro Marioneta.
And the main banana 'monopoly' in the country is run by a company called Carmina Burana Miranda - or CBM. Perhaps their spokesperson will be a very young and quite 'flamboyant' Juan Valdez - or maybe Javier Valdez. I have a spare pack animal I will have to modify to be carrying bananas! lol
Now I need to find my El Presidente figure. A portly gentlemen would be great if he fits in 1930's. Welcome ideas. 15 mm, please (or 18 mm).
No idea of the provenance of the guard figures in the photos - maybe Scruby or Mike's Models but I really don't know (the odd officer is Minifigs).
-
Rummaging about 'spare' figures and found my Javier Valdez and his mule - mule will be modified to carrying bananas:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJF-ej8jMS_AefieleiJd38v3QNo8kK1GBEnfpBDXtFS4tZrWvi89LvZpZA1n-SAM7gKEF0CmCnPTPf_nZMybbQezgpZoJ2uLwHp1kWZY2k_PyYOL8zBsyylgKLFW4UISiEkuLXJnO_CsZJ_aVde21wEeXePxJ6SeTQK1zyTP-7Z6m5qltITfM137_/w480-h640/IMG_1492.jpg)
And decided a candle holder from a late gamer's collection will make a nice homage to a certain island that isn't central to this game, Javier and mule for scale:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq2nAVb1lrp0mK0jIB8ZoEYj3B-jJm1YilzAd0g1tp7w4mKLSzAUuA_UgsUq4Z_jgZvumnEM9N-sb0hgPO_3j31rfl9zmctrXOzGfreC6hfRJve6fgdNlvRzKfE62Ifx-9xIewo7Q4-pQ4EP-_knvL-MSDp0mf3kcdQV31hv9mLx02e4JkiPUZaqFF/w480-h640/IMG_1493.jpg)
And now off to look for some figures that just might join this fray. Temptation is a terrible thing sometimes. Other times it's lots of fun! :o lol
-
Umm, some 'adjustments':
The big dudes: Gorilla gorilla gigantus, male, a.k.a. King Kong, gorilla gorilla gigantus, female, a.k.a. Queen Kong, and gorilla gorilla humungous, very jealous male, a.k.a. Rage Kong (pity the puny humans if he shows up!). Need to add El Presidente - not yet found a figure that excites me. Hoping for a rather portly sort, maybe, but something that strikes my fancy.
The leftists: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus two machine guns and their wannabe Dictator added one unit of armed women
The rightists: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus two machine guns and their wannabe Dictator added one unit of armed women
The Anglo-American Alliance: 7 foot units and 1 mounted unit plus 3 or 4 machine guns/artillery pieces and both the American and British envoys/ambassadors (not certain yet) - aligned with the rightists added one armed unit
The Germans: 1 unit of Porto-Nazis on foot plus 6 additional foot unit and 1 mounted units plus 3 machine guns and the German envoy/Ambassador - aligned with the leftists added one unit of additional foot
The ship crews: 2 armed foot crews with 1 machine gun, 7 unarmed ship crews (one of the Anglo-American envoys probably involved here) rummaged about and found figures for 2 more armed crew, added one unit of unarmed crew
The innocent bystanders, pardon, I mean civilians: 9 unarmed groups of men and women (with an Indiana Jones and dad sort of 'leadership' (?)), includes a doctor operating on a patient vignette added three units of unarmed civilians
Not listed previously are four units (3 added) of a 'secret' force. Also not listed previously are four units of a very different 'secret' force - with a couple of other 'civilian' units associated with the latter. And, of course, there is the guard with that band for four units to protect El Presidente.
The core theme of the 'adjustments' stemmed from realizing by adding these additional units I can divide most forces into half so that each force of eight units can be run by two players and still have relative balance excluding the mounted contingents that I don't plan to expand. The odd out is the unarmed civilians; by having twelve units I can have three factions, those who support El Presidente and then the leftists and the rightists.
I could, if need arises, have 17 players in the game. And probably a few more units from 'extra' figures will be added to the mix so I can probably boost that to 18 players - though might have to dip into my general extra figures. Game long enough and you find you have that little pile you don't quite know what to do with.
Hopefully by this time next week I should have significant progress on those steroidal apes.
Hmm, doesn't someone make planet of the ape figures in 15 mm?! Brakes, push the brakes, hard, stand on them! Enough already. :o
-
Found my El Presidente in my collection - from Bluemoon's Prohibition era gangster civilian figures. He is in the center with his right hand man on the viewer's left and his 'bag' man on the viewer's right. But what is in the bag? The main dude will be in white or maybe a pale yellow - but the tie will be white for sure.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcsuQPx9fa4PEZgxgOVxGa-Scf_VkvYcDmhJywjIeBL_NHn2NuxgtrBeZw_NWm6RCY6lAzrO_SGLDZLdo1F08evTfd1Q2owNjlJ9Bm0zIhJNKL8wVLpgUbvZHz5jY_vvufO3d0t3xeBtrgp3hNzrWP-C9T9JfX56JC_D-9lqIgAOjyh9Q_0LpfjLFO/w640-h480/IMG_1606.jpg)
The next shot shows the presidential "gun yacht", perhaps on standby for a fast get-away? El Presidente is on board for scale. This is from Peter Pig.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe6zAVWJxu3Jnttv3doKISbq_giYUWA68hfNlrUa-HQkoLfx0lOZWhnyqskWWrAz8l53_KKIsQsnmd7FhK6HUbhYYvVHhk5F8InDKtNoYplbQEin1h9CvVeBLyrGqnog9qP_0Le3hGpeSd6cfizuoFZAvsHTU4gX803USlRbkGsS4RtC9AwirAXyE7/w640-h480/IMG_1608.jpg)
Then there is this submarine I've had for several years now waiting for this scenario to crawl out of my imagination. I'm going to try and waterline it and hope it doesn't get destroyed in the process. As to what its purpose might be, that is a secret only to be revealed in the middle of a game (if it survives being worked on!). Same figure for scale. It is an aquarium decoration and I think I've seen it here on LAF before.

And last image for now is Rage Kong as he came from the store - bought many years ago. His arms are positionable. I will paint his chains to be more rusty and do something with his hair to give it more color especially his 'silver' back, teeth are too white for my tastes - but love his eyes. Note our valient El Presidente for scale. He is HUGE! Would even work in 54 mm I think. He dwarfs the other two Kongs - up for assembly soon.

Awaiting an order from Rebel Minis to finish off the people for the collection. Found - and being printed for me locally - a number of bits of animal life to add some color to my jungles. Rummaging about looking for a few specific things, I found a number of items I've had that I decided to add to this collection.
And for this and many other scenarios, I've got maybe two dozen trios of 'character' figures to add into the mix, probably use these as player alter-egos so that they feel a 'personal' involvement in the game. And since Fistful of Lead are the rules of choice, can make them pretty hard to kill off without being overly powerful to avoid them disappearing too quickly once 'battle' is joined. A lot, not all, of these trios include at least one woman, a few only women; the unarmed civilians have a lot of women and some children. A select few of the figures are duplicates - only so many actual sculpts out there. Different mixes of figures and different paint jobs will make them all useable - and different names even. And I've added some additional smaller forces for specialized tasks within the scenario.
Except for waiting on those Rebel Minis figures, it is down to painting and building. Oh, and on that building front, I pulled down a dozen craft store bird houses bought many years ago that will convert to the commercial district for the port to add to the industrial and residential area structures shown earlier in the thread.
Most everything being created for this scenario will be useable for other games that leave the Kongs out. I even have a few other 'monsters' - all rather famous - that can be added into the fray. And most of them are even appropriate for Central America - or readily adaptable.
edit: out in the garage for a bit and took two quick shots of the 'bird' houses:
First shot is an overall of the twelve buildings - in different styles.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVdMtzetN5Mif_nfenXPaqaI5D3kDODuKfdvI7xEo9__9MMpaon2inP-w6i8kEqM93GziYw4dHlwjlFNhGqwcR9X5yGmjotae73XeQRlaq6Rxui7tX6Kk3TA3IZCEKG1Bvga4SC5IIO_sJvOLjkVWUY1QQxw2NrMKMJRoaiEhRyXJLTx25H2DnoleE/w480-h640/IMG_1611.jpg)
And this shot shows a Bluemoon 15 mm Victorian woman for scale - she is not slated to be part of the game, though maybe she and her friends might make it into a different game.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjn3kqBhxypQpb1qLxcJZTH_bUDiT-YYsZrPrvHbDUhG0Aa54n3WQfEOVSgvkGipK6J1LYF1aaXRU1B1TUynGKDcAPU7HCRWgIhO094C0eR-tQFkiEtZlXW9TbS05-4PSmdfinV-fH2BTXBhKsvB-_72URhiZJdnIA5aPVIi2SSXvkr8yTqwVMCUONk/w480-h640/IMG_1612.jpg)
These are rather out of scale for 15 mm as is but I think with enough effort they can be converted. The hardest part is how thick the roofs are but that can be minimized. Or so I hope.

Your Rage Kong looks great!

Was 'gifted' a quartet of planes and purchased an excess - both entailing a bit of benign pay-back at some point for each person.

I was gifted the above planes, two each today - not sure what they are but they will get repainted for this scenario. Two of them are sea planes. Will do something nice for the person who gifted them at some point. If anyone can identify these planes, that would be great - all the documentation is in Japanese.

The Pfalz was sold for a nice discount - but I am helping the person who gifted them with a search for some figures he needs.
These make a nice addition to my game. I also recollected that I purchased some other 1/144th planes - ten of them, all different - for my German East Africa set-up that can make guest appearances in this game. All of those need painting.
And the below will make a very nice addition - once painted.

All of the pyramids are 3D prints from Dungeon Artifacts, a cool company. Bought many other items from them for other periods/games.
Still waiting on one order to arrive for some figures.
-
Courtesy of my local 3D printing guy, I now have 15 mm snakes, toucans, frogs, and monkeys! More critters due this Friday and more either on order or being hunted down. Especially cool is a bunch of vultures but also tapir, jaguar (?), and capybaras, among others. Last human figures due for arrival this week for Kong scenario, from Rebel Minis. Well, last figures until somebody releases something I can't resist adding; I'm looking at you Khurasan Miniatures - and anyone else smart enough to really want my money. lol 8)
Oh, and, yes, those critters are small - but it still works.
Will have to start prepping figures and fitting into my busy painting schedule.
edit 6/8/23: just for reference, railroad name to be Ferrocarril Nacionales de Conyuras or FNdC in abbreviated form.
-
Hmm, just saw that Old Glory 25s has a new Bluemoon range: Mexico Uprising for 1910-1920 period. May get some of the figures to add to my mayhem. Mexicans in colonial helmets, US Marines and sailors and the civilians, both Mexican and Americans all look useful. Might have to trim some of those civilian sombreros, though.
-
I never knew of these. Thank you for sharing.
I knew Peter Pig had a Viva Pancho range but missed this.
-
Deflatermouse, you are welcome - the Peter Pig Mexican building range is nice. Still debating ordering the Old Glory items, tempted but hard to justify with TOO MUCH already.
However, after a 'false start' with Way Too Large, I now - finally! - have a bunch of vultures for 15 mm. I did ask to have them printed a bit big for easier painting but after hunting for decades, I finally have some - a few dozen even, in trees and on ground, etc. And some more trees as a bonus (without vultures). The oversize will either go to Stone Age collection or get painted to sell as 28 mm, maybe both(?). I'm happy! :D ;) :) lol :P
Summer hobby doldrums, more or less - too hot of late, could be worse, much worse.
-
Just want to take a moment to say thanks to LAF's own Anton Ryzbak (sp?). Thanks to him I now have a built fleet for this game. I'll have to get a photo up at some point.
-
tempted but hard to justify with TOO MUCH already.
You justify things???? I just hide them in the garage so my wife does not find them. lol lol lol
-
When you get to the point of needing off site storage for 'the toys' it is absolutely time to justify adding anything!
-

Here is that promised photo - posted elsewhere by Anton.
I was only expecting some rather simple structures and was pleasantly taken aback by all the extra details he added such as the various weaponry - and those boats. Sure, still some work needed on the painting and weathering front but what a start to have in place!
This will be a 'stand off' fleet, perhaps on a separate table, during games. There likely will be additional and a bit larger scale craft closer in shore, mostly at docks, for games - and mostly merchant ships. Might be a few more submarines, too.
edit: I realized I can raid my stash of n scale figures for model railroading to provide some crew figures for these ships. Might not be perfect but better than nothing.

Back Story for the Aircraft Carrier:
CVU 1.67 USS Rustbukkett, was named after the unluckiest admiral in the history of the US Navy, Russell "Rusty" Bukkett. Naturally, the crew was a bit unnerved by the name - and the odd numbering. However, being honorable men, they served as assigned. Well, sailors being sailors, there were a few miscreants in the mix but they either got sent to shore and to other berths or disappeared at ports of call never, generally, to be heard from again. Those heard from again made intimate acquaintance with the brig.
This was a little known experimental carrier, the CVU designated Carrier Vessel, Undersized. Not working out quite as planned, the ship was assigned to the Caribbean Squadron for all of the 1930s. It’s undersized aerial squadrons were entirely biplanes since the deck was too short for any other type of aircraft. What sort of trouble could a US carrier expect in such a quiet backwater, after all?
While some say the ship was sold for scrap as part of the WWII war effort, others believe it was sold to an unnamed buyer nation with a leader more interested in his personal prestige - having his own carrier - than the practicalities of changing naval warfare and, especially, aerial combat. There are other rumors about its demise but they are only rumors. All that is certain is that the history of the ship is shrouded in great mystery and its official records are under deep presidential seal for 125 years from 1940 - only presidents are allowed to review its documentation until 2065.
One fascinating tidbit about the Rustbukkett is that it had a rather well used carrier pigeon component. Less credible are the stories about the bird handlers creating a flock of carrier parrots - conures mostly. If true, though, that would have been a very colorful addition to the ship.
There is at least one account of a group of women, nurses, serving aboard the ship for a time which would have been very unusual and newsworthy in any other theater of operations. This backwater rarely rated even a line or two of news buried deep in the newspapers of the time. One unsubstantiated rumor does speak to a visit to the ship by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Again, only a rumor. There is a photo that some purport shows wheelchair skid marks on the flight deck that scallyways say suggests a more famous visitor. Sailors are famous for their scuttlebutt, stories that would rival the tales of mountain men.
It is, of course, established fact that the ship was involved in the unusual incident with gorillas that occurred in Los Abajos, Conyuras. However, that is - as they say - another story.
——
I guess I need to start creating more back stories for the other water craft - this one got started last year and tweaked a bit today.
Hope to get back to work on this project very soon. We all know how it goes, progress, progress, progress and then stall, stall, stall - and then, hopefully, revisit until completed and playable.
edit: I've come up with the name for my variation of Juan Valdez = Juanito Pedo-Maloliente and his donkey(mule?) shall be Perico. No, when it comes to silliness, I have no shame. lol
edit, again: and now for El Presidente: Jorge Tonto Castaneda, works for me, and his wife shall be Mariposa Gorda Castaneda. And Esteban Chulo Derechista shall be one of the dictator wannabes and the other shall be Hector Zurdo Comico. No offense to anyone with those names. Maybe both of the wannabes should be chasing the same woman? Perhaps Esmerelda Pequenaputa, an infamous courtesan - mostly famous because no one understands why she is so sought after since she is, well, to be kind, rather homely.
-
Ready to prime: the archaeologists and their diggers and the Nemonauts. And, hopefully, as I go through and prepare the rest of the figures, I hope to reduce the total number of figures as much as is practical. I currently plan to prep all of the figures but only actually paint the 'essentials'. We'll see how that plan goes. For this lot, there are a full 60 figures I can wait on painting for as long as I like - if they get painted at all.
By the way, I don't plan to include Nemo himself; would be wrong since the game is set in the 1930s. But I am working on a back story that will justify what will be in the game but more on that another time.
-
Gorillas in their prime? Or just primed:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiouWe2vzWYwWZ4eYhlElOZVv9fV5slgDQ5IWZHA_zTFBiCcmYv_AANxOwDMhIL96vfxmlPHgiFeWur0pYnYCNlEWOptm3wwVDaycMf4hPRaQczvKI7xmL_5PIm2GPi5AX3dr0I1X9yQB3NY1lcUFPjhvwZEuIeGT944UG2acO7dUYDTzFV3J6nr2JJ0CtT/w640-h480/IMG_8203.jpg)
That is one of two pairs of gorillas.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNbkCcnQOVwcotBztV6LOJoSVul9XxlCLi4ehfa2jqQGaXUekA5m_Erwmb7V50xGTlH1zXTc2SzW4edFywGyto8rB5lNoMN9gNTjWbO4s7nQ67xPV8gAUG9rjJPWQny-JlRvt7tIRpjFI6FOQhLHp0R4ehIMEDsD_BiBPUbhSePxNYco2wO3waqgd9q842/w640-h480/IMG_8204.jpg)
This is both pairs together - there was supposed to be a photo of the other pair but I screwed up and got a video. Oh, well. Still there to be seen.
The two larger gorillas are from Khurasan, one of the others is a metal item found at a thrift store (right) and the other a plastic one found at a grocery store for all of one dollar US (left). And, of course, Rage Kong made an appearance earlier in this thread.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFcgp15q1Rpm-AjsKZ8pLMB1zKlb7J-fCqSx2xXgVhq3Gyd7pkDM78QMiQFwKII8leOyPXa0reKu4EP_055XfJqRgR1zifMejQKte7p8rPTaKv0i0Ld4BV3LQ6liTR0PVDtB7QMYFzgXJDApFakVr3bfqt-UEWwqiBpFOMyqH0w8M3oIAWNMd4oahDmVCN/w480-h640/IMG_8199.jpg)
Last is a bunch of the people underway, left rear is the archaeologists, right rear is the Nemonauts (without Captain Nemo, long dead by the 1930s). The rest are individual figures, most of them unique except one pair of females and one pair of males and then six each of two groups of different females but all six in each group the same sculpt but each group a different sculpt, just paint them different.
Much more to prepare for painting.
-
Was sitting in front of the box in that last photo above and dwelling on what is there last evening. The count of individually based foot figures adds up to 96 total miniatures. As to how many are unique within that box? There are three of same pose of a native male, two of a female mystery gal in eastern semi-dress, two male big game hunters, and six each of serving wenches and more undressed than dressed lasses, that's 19 figures - but five unique poses, so 96-19+5 yields 82 unique figures. And, of course, there are other unique figures in some other forces not in the box in the photo. Some included figures are a set for Indiana, Senior, Mutt, and Marion and a couple of 'guards' - and then another Indiana, with his whip this time. There is a geisha girl. Then some other women that might be something along the lines of a 20th century Lucretia McEvil. A mad scientist - with massive ray-gun. Various natives both armed and not who can be heroes, villains, or sidekicks. A vignette of an operating table with 'victim', doctor, and nurse. An aging daughter and younger granddaughter and grandson of Captain Nemo. And so much more. While this thread is devoted to the Banana Wars scenario in particular, all these figures can be used in a wide variety of pulp games. On the famous - or infamous - pulp-o-meter, I will stay mostly around 3-5 but once in a while it might sneak up to a 7. Now, just where on the meter does Kong land? Your thoughts?
Given all that variety - and not including the cave men figures I also have - who says you can't do pulp in 15 mm? Certainly not I. Not really my thing - the ray-gun figures was in a pack of other figures I wanted - but I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of space oriented figures that would fit for pulp out there (besides the Star Wars universe, plenty of 15 mm figures out there for that now, too). Again, not my thing, but lots of dinosaurs that can be used for Lost Worlds type games.
All bases for all figures are prepped now. Some figures still to wash and file and otherwise prep but by end of coming week I hope to have all the figures primed and ready for painting.
-
Getting a lot closer to all the figures being ready for painting - though lots of work to go on boats, buildings, and terrain (and some stuff in transit from the 3D pre-printed world just ordered a bit ago, not all for this game though).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpOdEAFRT5r9ORnAe2dlAp8q5_y8ZCSI80htA8gfJjgib5XsFmSfxgQS72O_8kTa2et3BKsFyvlYW88JQYfNXfg6CSxLdY3xaA7eiEMsg5eGY2IJAKHqPya11LhdEm2r35y80cRhSN5b-iZnOjIG9f_1Z5Gtgwt8VnBSBMiAr5QtzkB-1NjLVB7fe3Og/w480-h640/IMG_8242.jpg)
On the lower right of the above image are the 12 'units' of unarmed civilians, in front is a half dozen scientists, some mounted civilians and leaders - the British diplomats. At the top of the image are the four armed ship's crews to the left and behind them the eight unarmed ship's crews. And then some mounted crew and their support weapon, an automatic weapon and an old artillery piece.

Another great project, but how do you find the time, especially with the other schemes you simultaneously have on the go!
-
I'm retired. That helps, a lot. The 'great hindrance' is the honey-do list! :o lol. We don't have kids so that probably helps, I guess you could say my vast miniature collections is a stand-in for time that would have been spent on kids and grandkids, though there are great nieces and nephews that we enjoy.
My priority is to get a lot of stuff ready to paint: assembled, pre-based, and primed. And then organized into units and storage containers so that I can just pull out what I feel like working on or need for a game and get it painted. If all goes according to plan this year will end with the full Robin Hood collection ready with much or all painted, same for Jousting game, and the somewhat associated Three Musketeers (use the unarmed civilians), and Stone Age (no dinosaurs), the latter three all at least primed. And at the same time make real progress on completing my re-vamped/reduced French and Indian War, get a really good start on the AWI collection (well more started than already), and get at least some of my Old West/Pony Wars on the table and in games and the same for my Slightly Cracked Colonials (a variation on the Scramble for Africa). Oh, and try to finish the French Foreign Legion set-up which is all already primed.
It does help that, mostly, I paint to a game table standard most of the time - but I suspect, at least for the 'main' characters, I'll try to do a better job for Robin Hood stuff. I do plan to have color schemes of a sort for the whole Robin Hood collection, the Robin contingent will definitely feature green as a theme (though not Errol Flynn tights sorts!), the Sheriff will probably be a darker shade, either brown or gray or both. Clerics will be divided into different orders both to relieve the painting doldrums that sometimes creep in and also know who goes with what. And somehow use varied themes for the unarmed civilians.
A critical motivation is a need to reduce storage space used and having as much as possible well-organized is helping. What scares me is the difference between painted and based and figures in small containers in 'a pile' as it were. May take even more space ultimately - space that no longer is empty.
The kicker is there is a lot of other stuff not listed above waiting in the wings.
Well, there is also a bit of benign madness that drives me forward - I swim around within my imagination when working on my figures bringing them to some sort of 'life', at least on the table. Helps with giving it all a back story.
-
Two more groupings primed and ready or finished:
The Germans, on the right side:

Two more groupings to prep and prime and all the figures will be ready to paint.

Having just retired a few weeks ago, I can sympathize and feel your vibe of surveying what you want to work on. I honestly think us miniature gamers have an advantage over other retired people who sit around and watch TV and grow bored. We are NEVER bored. We ALWAYS have something we want to work on, and thus avoid that "Maybe I'll get a part-time job..." trap! lol :D

-
First, congratulations on retirement. I've just passed two years.
My hobbies are my mainstay that gives me a reason to get up and get going, both miniatures and model railroading. Plus reading and movies - though the latter could use another 200 titles in the collection if I had the space for them, already have enough to watch a different movie every day for two years or something around there. I like having the hard copies to look through.
TV? Sitting around and watching? That is what I call "entertainment for unfinished dead people". My TV watching is a bit of news, my Forty-niners during pro football season (mute the commercials or switch to another game for a moment), and DVD movies (not really TV, that) - and sometimes certain commercial free public TV shows, history or antiquities. Who needs to see that freaking Flo insurance lady for the 873,969th time! No cable or satellite at our house, by choice! And no way my wife needs yet more shopping channels!!!!!!!
I started walking every morning when I retired - instead of on weekends and when I could in evenings - and that is also proving beneficial, lost about 10 pounds and working on reducing the waistline a bit.
So, miniatures, trains, books, movies, exercise, and our shared passion of gardening fill our time pretty well, at least mine. And a bit of traveling here and there, sometimes just a long drive around our neck of the woods.
Enjoy your new freedom - and make sure you have a plan for how to stay busy and self-valued. That is critically important. I started focusing on all of this when in my twenties after discovering how many retired people just either figuratively or literally keel over once retired.
Life is too sweet to waste time.
-
Thanks! I also have gotten better at exercise, and now do it daily in the morning (after about an hour at the painting desk).
Take care!

Photo below includes all six of my "Kongorillians" and six human figures for comparison (well five of the six humans, the other one is sort of hiding in the jungle. Yeah, I know, still not painted (mostly). Painting will come, just not quite yet.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL6lydaMPMyQ9ixYUC5L81Ceqjy-agqhWn1ZyFWhb18re6BWIAzG3oem3xBgq7dGBgcZ2yacPq3joLkEb_1gKBUfxW9b0wAVzvoArXeJwUS1S21A-4FnqOeSnK_FsoeWBxhis4ba9Pb2L-aO8adyGAF4WeGqbhcGHQ7Yv9j5hJ_uLGGvJWrN41gdhRKA/w640-h480/IMG_8275.jpg)
And this images shows a well known archaeologist.

And, just for fun, I've folded nine sort of homeless figures into my pulpy Banana Wars set up.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8r-tGvWex698V8XYfhhDbmZAXlHOn9RDyY3aARe9ai1iiLdDTrludd6_0SMDfe6MuWUH-nA1sqI_qvnps8-riPr2zCluIixka-rWM5SeBtlaHNM7kvRfMU2FuOTQ5UkIoD8JD6v-Tmjl6Mt4vipNJun3E7qY30yrsupCa_chFXVdERYdxgrajVaRC0w/w480-h640/IMG_8265.jpg)
The top three above are female SteamPunk types with three male of the same type below. The three at the bottom will represent, at least in spirit, the three prinicple sergeants in Gunga Din, they aren't special figures, just three left over British colonial types. I hope it will be a fun add to the game.

I've bookmarked your blog. I love blogs, and glad to see you have one. I look forward to whiling away summer hours perusing it when it is too ghastly hot to go outside. :D

Mike, enjoy the exploring, there is a lot there - and an awful lot to move along on. I'm hoping that my decks are clear to put real focus on my hobbies for a while. Sure, some honey-do stuff and a modest bit of family stuff to enjoy, but time to be a bit self-indulgent. :D
And here is what should be the last of the figures to prep for painting:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjltpfokoqVSFl1UE1zb87O1EMq5t1jq007WkVOeeznnnuW62JE6nK_NNJEn82IXp-k49xCL72Wr7U_9Qm144ZDl7IeB6X_lek7nVPw8aHRyiaOeWA6Fhs5_63ss8i9eyZQqLgEYwWbKardp8Y96LGHslWLk7R-Fya-Vph_WmhLEh0CLX-748aSvNG5Xw/w480-h640/IMG_8290.jpg)
There is a closer shot of that 'green thing' on the blog - see link above.
edit: Oh, monkey poop, I'm not sure where I put Javier and his banana carrying mule (or donkey); guess I have to hunt them up. At least I know they are here - somewhere.
-
Is that a wrecked car you added along the intact one?
-
Fram, yes, that is a wrecked car - both come from QRF models. The resin one seen earlier is from Peter Pig. I have a lot more cars to add in that were, mostly, purchased for Prohibition Era Gangsters - lots of assembly and painting to go on those. Those are in my off-site rented storage unit for now. Oh, and a bunch of cars from Peter Pig's Mexican Revolution range will see duty in games with this collection as mentioned earlier in this thread. A car, is a car, is a car.
And in the hunt for Javier Valdez, still hunting - though found a stand in mule until I find the one I had set aside, will need a stand in for Javier, too, but that's easy, I've turned up a few additional figures to add in - odd bits found here and there that are 'orphans'. They might get added today. Been a bit hot around here, Saturday hit 113 F (maybe 114), that's 45 C. Today is slated to hit around 105-107. I go until I need a break working in the garage with a fan on me. Then I retreat into the AC space inside.
-
Found my missing muleteer Javier Valdez and his beast. Primed up along with a few items from Peter Pig for the wannabe dictator HQs and the palanquin for the "Witch Queen" from Khurasan, based her separate so she can ride the palanquin or not. Alas, forgot to get a photo.
With that, I believe - hope - all figures are now prepped for painting.
-
As part of a different project, I've been working through my various and sundry non-Old West scatter terrain and getting into playable condition, way more stuff than I thought but it will all come in handy somewhere along the way. As part of this, I double checked my Old West to ensure I had certain things there and came across a pack of figures I've had for some years that were 'homeless' as far as where they might be used. They are Koori (Australian Aboriginal figures) from QRF/Freikorps if memory serves. I think they'll find a home here, perhaps transported - to their astonishment - in the the Naughtylust submarine. I do have a few other Australian bits like kangaroos so maybe a hunting game, too.

Some more stuff primed - Javier and another muleteer, a couple of tables with chairs, and that queen - she is not glued in place but on a steel base. The fan at the back not properly glued in place yet.
And then some fun finds from a gem and bead show my wife wanted to go to last Friday:

And then some beads to be used as markers or objectives of some sort, with octopi imagery. For those who've been paying attention, there are those Nemo-nauts.
Here are a few other items from varied sources to enhance the look of the game:

And last, this cool statue that I think will be worshipped by the local native folk.
-
So, an innocent errand run on the first day of 2025 and what do I find in the local grocery store:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9bhcd8UHYNYCymF8MPkejGnewEuyA9cBYX1orWFOVoJSNnq4tPcEbY_9MnBqWEPjP5wxu8GJgXnyYG1uf24AHtdsEUJeT-8kcaKYXhoAljBCxZZXfMhqyuBvyYXjJfWG0r5W3Zis-b6INlJZTQBcGnaI6LCxsH9xcNgixq3h-lLj_2HdINhZxRMBjeMo/w480-h640/IMG_9228.jpg)
Nothing less than a Matchbox Ford Trimotor airplane - and Indiana Jones specific! Documents on package say copyrighted 2023 so perhaps new - or maybe just new packaging. And it works a treat for 15 mm -
One smaller 15 mm figure (AWI but handy at the moment).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIJVxP49Qy-yvppEkZJboO1hyDkyJAQW0_gxl-3A2FiEgc-uy4nzpkENxBELRCF0SFapqvxSiahJSGJf0ZmSyDvi3aigZiipYwGlvLetzzmaUX9IRXVd6Ts3DQUmK6nbeXvdtnQSfYClQX6F1ZYcQyHORww07vpq7UqKAuXzI9nGeabzrww8INe4h4B-s/w480-h640/IMG_9229.jpg)
And a bit larger 15 mm (also AWI)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE5oddOvENMEz29-vZlSb623UZ2mOznkR1HJLVcZlF3lXumPH991flBmjonbJUvmT1cLyj4o2dzGTaWgh87sZ4sVJGTXZP8bbnHvMgLO2XGHBWXkYfDwPWUTKsPKs9nRjJLABGIyvq4ua58_lTtRcbNb5y7dUpZd9MBnhw6A9M2jgI4vq8z87wCYJopGA/w480-h640/IMG_9230.jpg)
Of course, still on the hunt for an 'affordable' Pan-Am Clipper. But I'll take the Trimotor. Cost a whopping $7 US.
Now that's a way to start a new year!
-
Seconded! - by both getting one and the excitement at the find :)
iirc (from last week...) it scaled out to 1/200?
-
The plane is, indeed, a bit under scale but it is only going to be a 'prop'. And I'll likely add two other Matchbox planes also meant to be Indiana Jones planes, one might be closer in scale, the other definitely out of scale but, again, 'props'. Better something than nothing.
Will see how this project fairs in 2025 - behind AWI, Old West, Three Musketeers, and Robin Hood. Still hopeful to get at least something going. At least all I need to do is pick out some already primed figures and put paint on them.
Will very likely add some weathering to all the Matchbox planes once all in hand.
EDIT: A few hours later and two more planes ordered:
MBX Airliner
(https://wheelcollectors.com/cdn/shop/files/IMG_9289_19509114-6a80-4565-b7eb-51d570c8ef34_540x.jpg?v=1703041489)
River Flyer
(https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/kwYAAOSweppmsW1n/s-l1600.jpg)
Just under $20 US including shipping for both. Obviously the MBX will be well under scale but the River Flyer will be better in scale, have a version of plane in wrong paint job bought somewhere along the way. Maybe, for the extra now, 'crack it up' to create a crashed plane.
-
Nice find! Here's your in scale Boeing Clipper:

Spent some time 'tinkering' and have figured I will start with painting a maximum of 260 figures before making any decision about painting the whole lot of figures. That should be more than enough figures to have lots of games. And all of those figures on foot and individually based. If it turns out that is enough to have a fun collection then I can just let the rest go to a good home - or keep them and add more figures over time to enhance scenario options. Unlikely all the figures would be in a single game.
The best part of this is that I can get that many figures painted in a month or two which means much more likely to get on the table in 2025. So, maybe.
And thanks for the link on the plane, Carlos; looks like it is the same as the Airfix version.
-
Managed to pull out the figures and look them over and the number of figures will likely be higher. The smallest number I've gotten to is 395 - a good deal higher than 260 but those extra figures dramatically expand the options. And that still drops the total by close to 1,000 figures. 395 is still excessive, of course, but not quite so alarmingly excessive.
The other side of the equation is I can paint one third of that lowest number and start running varied games and eventually build up to that 395 number.
A serious bout of sanity for me of late - at least on the miniatures front!
My biggest challenge is now getting buildings. Perhaps mostly scratch built but I'd like to find certain buildings in the 3D print world, pre-printed.
-
The great reduction has begun. And, so far, it has been painless. Pulled out at least 200 figures from the painting queue this evening for this 'period'*. Should be able to pull out several hundred more as time allows. This reduction 'disease' is spreading through much of my collection - and easing my mind a bit. Known for years I was getting excessive and wanting for years to reduce and recently finally got sufficiently motivated to act. Figures aren't going away, at least not yet. But it still feels good to know my personal painting burden is roaming around towards manageable.
And as the overall burden across many collections reduces, I just might feel justified in sending a few collections to the likes of Fernando Enterprises or a similar service to get 'there' faster; there, of course, being a completed collection of painted figures!
One thing I am not worried about is feeling as if I wasted money buying figures I ended up not needing or using - enjoyed the process and, oddly, enjoying 'reversing' the process.
Oh, and those other two planes arrived. Will need to get a photo with a figure to compare, might take a few days.
* Is a pulp variation of Banana Wars an actual period?

Jungle Cruise building:

Working to get one printed at 1:100 to add to my pulp gaming options - maybe use as a backwater port for my Banana Wars.
-
I like that -- looks great! I wonder how big it would be in 28mm scale...
Mike Demana
-
Mike, it is offered in HO scale and I'd bet the proprietor would print at larger scale - I think that is what is in the photo but it could be N scale. Maybe wait until I get mine and measure it. Just remind me - not sure when I will get it but I will post a photo when I do. Sooner than later hopefully.
Edit:
Mike - and any others interested - proprietor says order the HO model and add a note to do in 1/64th scale (S scale - should be 'close enough' and not overwhelm your table), so $89 [I think, verify] - a bit pricey but not bad for such a cool model. Here is the link:

USA based in California for those who need to know. Lots of other cool stuff there. And, heck, I've already gotten a note it is posted and shipped, my order! Well, maybe shipping documents generated but either way fast service.

That's a beautiful building, it'll look good with some weathering.

What is the source for the Jungle Cruise building please?

Potter, there is a link in my response a couple of posts above, Gold Rush Bay in California, USA, I modified a bit to hopefully make it easier to see the link.
Sakuragi, yes, indeed - and a little paint before getting to the weathering! :D

Thank you for that, these old eyes had missed it. I was hoping it was the STL file for what appears to be a 3D print file. The Library printer I have access to would take a long time to do that one. :D

Old Desert Market
All of those four buildings are from Tabletop Terrain and will be the basis for a game or fifteen. I have those and there are a couple of other structures that might join them, most likely the abandoned desert tower:
Question for you all - even though these are all desert and the Jungle Cruise building above is, well, for the jungle, do you think they can be mixed into the same game?
-
Your toys, your choice.
If it was me, I wouldn't mix the two. It's not that disparate architectural styles and building materials don't exist in any sort of established settlement, they do but when we make tiny worlds, we are making charicatures and that demands some sort of thematic approach. We can mix manufacturers, tying them together with the same basing. We can mix building types, to a certain degree, by giving them similar roofing or shared footpaths but there's a limit.
Bunging the Eiffel tower in the middle distance of a scene that's supposed to depict medieval Kyoto is going to burst our efforts to suspend disbelief. Unless it's a fantasy setting, I'd say the different styles are too different to mix.
It's one of the challenges of modelling to find compatible items that are both different or unique and yet fit with others to work thematically.
-
Fair points, Carlos. And, of course, not for my Banana Wars setup - more for my general pulp style games, a great place to get my Indiana Jones figures into action.
However, I could see the Jungle Cruise building on the same table, say at the edge of a river with jungle behind it that gives way to a desert and then these buildings on another part of the table. So not quite so jarring a juxtaposition. In 15 mm that is a lot more reasonable than it might be in 28 mm. The challenge then becomes having such a large board for what is generally a 'small' game. Perhaps a "twofer", two games - or more - combined onto a single table.
-
Given this a Pulp setting I would have no problem mixing the two. The Jungle Cruise building would just appear to be a newer, western style building on the waterfront.
-
Here is another building in the same vein:
Desert Gate House
And then there is this but I'm not yet sure where to source in 15 mm:
Desert Stable but it just sort of rounds out the 'collection' as far as I know.
Add the tower, gate house, and stable and I'd have a complex of seven buildings with some sub-structures within some of the models.
-
There are plenty of ports in the Middle Eastern world that could be stretched to have both buildings...
Those are some nice buildings, though...!
Mike Demana
-
That gate house looks pretty cool!
-
Found another structure that I'd like to add but, again, not yet found in 15 mm:
Desert Trading Outpost
And please note, while I hope all enjoy seeing these buildings and some may find it useful, I am also 'recording' these for my own use to help me keep up the hunt until I have what I want - which is pretty close.
Edit: in further communications with my 3D printer of choice it seems, not only do I hope to get what is shown above but a few other items I didn't know were out there but he might just add. Stay tuned.
And even later edit: I need to stop looking around, I've found nine other desert buildings I don't yet own, a few shown here the others not but I've created a document to follow them. Probably end up with them all before I'm done. Just too rich a setting for a wide variety of scenarios. Budget must rebuild excess before acquiring more buildings - to excess. :o
-
And now for a brief left turn, faux Indiana Jones titles for games yet to be:
Raiders of the Lost Park
Temple of Boom
Last Tirade
Kingdom of the Crystal Jewel
Dialed Up Clandestinely
We now return you to your regular programming. lol
-
Managed to spend a few minutes doing a side-by-side of the four buildings I have so far and managed to take a couple of photos:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Jkb3nXw2BWYt74pdJeeZOdA3nYkVnOSz5LyyqyvHYPwmFolWGGZB4c4NV6T1LAUDJEG4hY-kosd2aKMpeQ5y5eSROJgB4M8N2n6Oixfgputo_q1alE09xhETrLsjMl00n8WSdFK0Jr-WrnyIUNseM7K-5kMHZlvl14c0WVRRt4rB1QWZsNj5azCgThc/w640-h480/IMG_9761.jpg)
An overall shot of all four, look closely on the dock and you'll see three figures - only primed so far. From left in back is the desert granary, desert market, desert inn, and in front is the small desert dock; not all pieces are in place on all the models, just checking how they 'scale' together.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcw41A4vYyArCaI_Z4jHaBoroHQVhKP1J_HpQB-V8abdXKc4EKd8LePrhyphenhyphen7W1F6cmj0AaldXdCuzXI76lbv6a6nG1L_SYIOUnUHXawaT3ZGM9g_ycwCVvauta9u_gn0SVtzCPogclWDds2O8Cl7Jn40CA41qPqQPZ9aRfTZHdJaPDZkhh3EJ5Owb8izXQ/w640-h480/IMG_9762.jpg)
A bit closer - Indiana Jones up front, Marian (maybe?), and Mutt at the rear in his motorcycle gear (well, in my mind that is what he is wearing).
I have a few other 'family' figures. Not sure I have a Sallah figure but I have figures I can use.
-
(some of listed items can be seen earlier in this thread)
Some things I likely will order from Tabletop Terrain:
Abandoned Desert Tomb, Desert Blacksmith, Abandoned Desert Tower, Desert Obelisk, Desert Gate Hose, and Atrius Settlement Archway Bridge (for different setup).
Some things I hope they will add to their lists to order :
Desert Trading Post (aka Desert Community Building), Desert Slaver House (to be used in a different capacity), Small Stone Quarry, Desert Campsite, and Desert Stable.
Some items they don't offer but another supplier does:
Abandoned Desert Mine, Desert Archaeological Site (a bit pricey but plenty for the money), Medieval/Desert Tannery, Small Desert Village (not all that small), Temple Tabletop Tribal Scatter Terrain Bamboo Raised Platform (another for a different setting - but very much pulp), and - maybe - Desert Dye Works (advised not a great model but I might get it anyway).
The other supplier, CentriunStudio, already has the Desert Trading Post if Tabletop Terrain doesn't add it.
That adds 17 more models (actually more buildings than that when you count the village) to expand my pulp gaming environments - though not all to mix in to the same setting. But most fit into the desert buildings setting. I figure this will be the setting of many table top adventures that start, end, or happen here - some focused on Indiana Jones and others not so much.
After that, all I can think of to add is some structures for a 1930s air field and to scratch build some small seaport buildings - already have most if not all of what I need for that scratch build.
Well, maybe add a few water craft but probably already have what I need.
There is a few dollars involved but can't take it with me when I kick off so... :o
-
CentrionStudio order placed plus one item from Smiley Badger - via Etsy. Tabletop Terrain soon, probably tomorrow. Will be spending time with the Banana Wars figures this evening after dinner. That includes the Indiana Jones figures - and much else.
Seems the Jungle Cruise building is yet to ship. Probably because another item I ordered requires some special effort to customize. Really looking forward to getting it though.
-
Yee-semi-haw! Only 'semi' because Tabletop did not have the Desert Trading Post - but Centrion did. Also no Small Stone Quarry or Desert Campsite, checking if maybe Centrion can provide. Otherwise, all desired now ordered. Just waiting. And that is the hard part! :o
I'll survive. Or should, always have before. ;)
-
Interesting thread. I am following with interest.
-
I love the character of the desert buildings, though they're huge in 28mm. I have the dock.
-
Yes, I imagine the structures are quite impressive - and take up a LOT of table - in 28 mm. One of the advantages of 15 mm is being able to put a bigger 'world' on the table. And I guess you can say I am building a pretty big little world as seen in this thread. And other than -maybe- the desert camp site, it looks like I will be getting all of what I was hoping for. Camp site is getting a test print before proprietor decides to sell it in 15 mm or not. Hmm, maybe if it doesn't come out I might ask for it anyway as some sort of ruin or something buried in a sand storm?
-
While in the "waiting mode" for all those 3D print items I've ordered, I've continued with reducing the total number of figures in the painting queue. And then I decided to do something a little different than planned - color code all the varied forces with different colors on the undersides of the bases, a task made easier by having so many varied colors of spray paint on hand. Some of those paints are from hobby projects, others from household projects, and then holiday decorating projects.
Almost all of the figures are already primed so there was some masking of figures in the process. Those not already on individual round bases only needed the underside of the base painted though some bases needed the basic color added to one side and the 'force' color on the opposite side.
Still to go are the 'adventuring folk' which will be divided into the 'good', the 'bad', and the 'neutral' - each getting its own unique color. Many of these will be the 'stars' of the show, usually either the good or the bad (remember, actors love to play villains - so, yeah, stars).
And, for me, the most fun bit of the day was finding a name for my four Begal Lancer 'orphan' figures - they shall henceforth be the Svengali Lancers. :D
Still need to remove a lot of figures from the square bases and re-glue them to the round bases but much closer to having all figures ready to paint. Individually based figures on, mostly, 1/2" round bases will allow the games to be more characterful going forward.
So far ready to complete re-glueing if not yet done:
El Presidente force
Rightist Wannabe Dictator force
Leftist Wannabe Dictator force
United States Military force
British Military force
German Military force (the old colonial force, not the more modern below)
The Proto-Nazis and the German submarine landing party (each with its own base color)
The Natives (for Central America)
The Nemo-naughts
The unarmed local civilians
The armed ship's crews
The unarmed ship's crews
With those still to go as above, there will be 18 colors - including the Svengali Lancers who got their own color (the only gloss color I used). That is because those not assigned a 'force' color will stay the basic flat red primer I use for most of my figures which makes the 18th color - though for this project I am using a sand colored primer.
Still 'too many' figures but at least they will yield an extraordinary variety. Yes, too many, but a lot less than earlier laid out and even reduced from the first round of reductions.
Oh, and I am debating about porting over my Kwanzabari unarmed civilian figures to populate my new 'toy towns' when they arrive - which will probably all just get the neutral color if I decide to do so. Think in terms of figures that can be used from Egypt to points south within Africa. Other figures will work for the non-native civilians in the Banana Wars in the title of this thread, more suitable for Central America. And I suspect I will be mixing in my Pacific Island native forces - though that may require ordering some more bases, remains to be seen.
Okay, enough for now.
-
Here is a link to a Workbench thread regarding sourcing - and populating - an airfield. And only partly for my "IJ" Air Force:

Recognize anyone?
Okay, might help if they were painted...but three Indiana Jones figures? All three I know of that have been made in 15 mm (excluding 3D prints of which I know of none but doesn't mean they aren't out there). I will not be using them all as Indiana Jones - but some of his relations/co-conspirators perhaps.
-
Received the Jungle Cruise building today - and all one piece which avoids the issue about interiors. Photos with figures, El Presidente and party, and a ruler for scale for those interested - like increasing to 28 mm. Just keep in mind I asked for it at 1:100 scale.

Color me happy. If time allows later, I will post next to some of the desert buildings to show size difference.
-
Is this El Presidente's Palace? It feels like the place one could rule an Enchanted Kingdom from.
-
Nope, not the presidential palace, just what will - eventually - be a piece of my pulp port though I'm thinking maybe one of the 'secret' ports, perhaps for the Nemo-nauts. Just wanted to show how the building scales with figures and these were close at hand.
Though I do think an "enchanted kingdom" presidential palace isn't a bad idea. But I'm afraid Conyuras is a rather poor country, bananas and curiously 'unknown' swaths of jungle being its only real 'crops', so the presidential "palace" isn't likely to be all that grand. But is likely to be either next door or very close to Teatro Marionetta. Perhaps Mariposa Gordo Castaneda, wife to Presidente Jorge Tonto Castaneda, might at times take the stage and, well, umm, 'entertain' the audience. :o. lol
And here is the side-by-side:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDewLkWC_e8ozubi8IopJhpi3oqrIQM4YgDt5Hw75Vygn0l7JD_zplD3adUkQjKXwJ2uBHDqrDXwEOwYPrvrQFsejEEPwi8q6xBU3_Fri956vhwHNSshTPEwRAwjPcmwpqGv9q0tTSedhJxP68MlUu4wiUJh0ALz11WvMiBIUHv-wXPj844YEPOZf0kQ/w640-h480/IMG_9849.jpg)
The Jungle building is noticeably smaller than the desert buildings but that is okay, even if on the same board they aren't likely to be adjacent. I will use the jungle building to help scale my scratch build port buildings, at least to some extent. As a matter of fact, earlier today I dug down into 'the pile' and think I've re-found the buildings I will use to create my port - almost certainly much inspired by a recent post about a China Station port here on the Pulp board. Amongst other points of inspiration.
-
I love that building! I would prefer it to have roofs that come off so figs could run around inside, but I understand everyone has different needs when it comes to the buildings on their tabletop. Great choice in this model -- it will look so cool painted up along the riverfront!

-
And more buildings arrived from Tabletop Terrain today. Some minor and easily fixed breakage and one item in wrong scale - but proprietor responded to issue in minutes (while on his vacation!) that it would be fixed by Friday and correct sized items shipped (shipped 20 mm, ordered 15 mm). Those folks place an extremely high value on top quality customer service. Also, they added items to print not in their catalogs to meet my desires. Here is a very jumbled photograph of the new items:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgklOGPcH9vHew1k-cZh9zpNF7fOV4GBJWSk7PCDF252NaVYPfivjneW4DwqzJDrHs71OzF6Qur_xMdZd_lncD_DfLfJJE7zYDV7lXd94Yr74feQAIdsvOiCfZ18WOCIkl7lAKWLlvOxfqVXaUhOpgV5_mxzqYdyOV-EuX3MQN-P_mi11sRlfzo8iREbQ/w480-h640/IMG_9857.jpg)
Bottom left is the Atreus gate for other projects, to its right is the Desert Gatehouse, above it is the desert blacksmith, above that is the desert stable, and above that is the desert 'slaver' house. Then there is the sphinx like desert ruin - the head portion can be removed to reveal very cool interior detailing so this is one item where not all pieces will be glued together, and below that is the wrong sized abandoned desert tower - way too big to mix with the rest. And at the very bottom of the photo, the control tower from Airfix arrived today which I will use for my airfield project. Not really in view but at the extreme upper right you can just see the base of the obelisk - one of the items that require a minor glue repair. The other items have been seen before. The plastic bags contain detail components where appropriate.
Sorry, but not enough time for a better photo. And I have some more buildings on order from another source to round out this project as far as buying stuff is concerned.
-
The full desert collection makes for its own magic kingdom. I wish I had room for all of that myself.
-
Doing it in 15 mm makes it workable to have the whole setup. However, even in 15 mm it takes a lot of space.
And while contemplating my setup it just occurred to me that this would be a great place for a contemporary Bourne chase game from the third installment, Ultimatum. Not that I have the right figures but could perhaps adapt to the 1930s. Hmm.
-
Thats a great collection of buildings. Looking forward to seeing them painted up
-
Yay -- looks great in its prepainted stage. Looking forward to seeing the town all set up. :)
Mike Demana
-
So, I'm sitting and tinkering with how to set up the buildings and then I started to wonder about something...would those HO cars work, the 3D prints, circa 1925 vintage work?...so I pulled them out and and I got to here:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoL7Dk9rb8ckw0Gsrkb4IjW5j4hf3urnHyavqaufeWoHr4FoLE-Pk121clDzFSi4XVxqjhuE-iGFvg_faxNpDtxGw47nBO5Kd62KVoiWNnbbZOfgd3OIqlOE8NKcjoyv02FLuovCJVNa1wdL7PVNh9kraarQgsaIxwcyuI-5-01PwF1iHwJonOiWIVeg/w480-h640/IMG_9859.jpg)
Yeah, okay, you're thinking, neater, a bit than yesterday but still just the same structures. Um, no. Look to the lower right. See a vehicle or three?
A little closer view perhaps?:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ffA-Ijujr3EMBWDtUPxz2j6fFoWoMui99tifu36oDJHQdymPU3Eh2GoBJQ2WAPeLvlOBEiKozpDp7evrB7qlmLJNvlVeQRXXppWDU3FvwTzl6okFgY0ySIDfg4uI-uMXCiwc0POsuqATKZSUEYN3wpkYQVSQu5WAxGpHkuYLVTD4sIZrMNpQFMd6hg/w480-h640/IMG_9860.jpg)
There is a story here. Last year I ordered a bunch of N scale cars that I really wanted. Alas, I got a bunch of HO scale cars instead - and I couldn't get the dude to fix the problem (major health problems on his end may have been the culprit but still...) Anywho...
A couple more photos with some smaller and larger 15 mm figures:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHPdNG33V7L3rcrfodh0KxurgnGEyOfr0DGwqLdQ3qfQpf-ZNAsgSSD7JbnbvZJtfBPcii_hvL_9qoAyiOS4a_IFQOOJrPJMrtUDfTjOe5ZeKM5SVVReSh2aqeUk3nMin_UkepVppGM0xNVo3BfRHVWXY0JsdYFOueV_ebOYIFoaM4EoJ1DXoHFCnOpA/w640-h480/IMG_9861.jpg)

A 'perfect match' between figures and cars? I don't know and I don't care. Works well enough for me.
Oh, and I have a total of 27 such vehicles - quite a few more than the N scale I ordered.
And the other piece of the tale - I damned near just sold these! :o
So glad I did not. Now my town will be jam packed full of period appropriate cars and trucks and such - as soon as they all get painted.
Color me several shades of Really Happy!
edit:. I just imagineered a name for my desert town/port - Gyro. I like it because the town will revolve off and on to the table from game to game. Oh, and it also rhymes with Cairo. Fun.
-
Where did you get the vehicles?
-
Source of the cars?
I've been trying to re-find the source but have had no luck. Still have the box they arrived in but it has a name that doesn't match to the proprietor but address is Princeton, Wisconsin, USA, which does match. Proprietor contact was Adam Liston. He had an "invasive tumor" as of about 15 months ago and no idea what transpired from there.
Really disappointing not getting in N scale.
Not only did I almost sell them this week - some time ago I came pretty close to just chucking them out as of no use to me. Then inspiration struck today and they match up size wise close enough to my 15 mm figures to keep me happy. I guess that is my consolation for not getting what I wanted. Would still love to find equivalent in N scale. Have some but not as much as I'd like.
Hope that helps.

This post is for Cat, the Plasticville hangar with my IJ Air Force:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghuN5zvc6zBU8spfBDtpk2_Mw6vk42uQ-lxJlsiwNQ81LRYOFrliCzpnGyWUJrTWPIdpHIC5yudwnMszU1H8oHS3o0iHgRIk8394twEBjqdPCQpJW73c4BaXRVmQ9inIQn8hwdBrtAiub53sHqRUPaQhjriYY3dHYTz6wKl-HNni_FrCgGI-rH_Sm_ot4/w640-h480/IMG_9922.jpg)
With the roof off - fits all three of the planes.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimu2ioK3GlsHlLEdbmK6DR_Z-S1MS6Ao0hUtAbQQS88EZZTCSZqjey2S72rcpVbn-llIl8moWlOUbbErs2OpOGWHRJKr0bSrjoMahf_GcVX3Pvox0bdLLgXY-dtfCT4lC8YPlSnN4W5m3i2Z77jpNPG9BxQXOL0SQdBOw1Zma-hg5DyZLm61sSa6rWgso/w640-h480/IMG_9924.jpg)
And with the roof on through the door.
I've been inside hangars that sort of size, both military (as part of a news crew, though) and civilian (my dad owned a cargo plane a long time ago).
So, this will work a treat. Thanks for the pointer cat.
Now just need to figure out how to 'obliterate' the toy sign and downsize the doors inside and out - and find some acetate suitable, maybe some with a greenish tint for the skylights. Have to make some look broken and all of them a bit dirty. And need to give it a suitable base. Don't think I ever saw a clean window inside a hangar, just lots of dust and cobwebs that I recall. Probably an Air Force sergeant is reading this cringing and saying 'not in my hangar you didn't!" :D

Replacement ruined desert tower arrived today. Order from Centrion on its way to round out the town and ruins.

The 15 mm and 20 mm towers side by side. The oversized one goes to a friend since Tabletop Terrain doesn't find it worth it to ship back.
I will be doing a lot more of my pulp posting going forward at this blog: https://carobbeansea.blogspot.com (https://carobbeansea.blogspot.com)
Yes, it is my pirate focused blog but I am also using it for pulp and, eventually, for Star Wars. I will pop back in here at LAF from time to time with brief updates.
-
Ooh, yes perfect size for the planes!
When I was working on my hangar, I found that it took a lot of elbow grease to remove details with my trusty #16 XActo blade. That's some wicked hard plastic.
Quickly shifted course on the lettering and opted to cover it over with a strip of styrene sized to glue onto the name frame. Printed my own Vulture Squadron name sign on paper and glued it onto the strip with a very thin coating of Zap-a-Gap.
-
Printing out signs and attaching them to models is the way to go...! I've done that for a number of buildings.

yep, just design something that fits directly over the existing offending letters and cover them up, a bit of trim around the edge and no one will know..
-
I've missed this for a while. I really like the buildings, and I'm looking forward to what you do with that fleet of cars.
As others have said, a "wooden sign" of appropriate size hung over the original on the hangar, and you're good. I can recommend The Gimp editing package for that, although it takes a bit of getting used to.
-
Yes, the sign seen in the photo is fairly easy to build a new sign to go over it. But there is a much bigger sign on the roof that will take a bit more creativity to make it 'go away'.
Curious how you dealt with that Cat? I'm thinking some sort of lightweight construction on the roof or maybe just an observation platform. Can't be too substantial or the roof would 'collapse'.
-
But there is a much bigger sign on the roof that will take a bit more creativity to make it 'go away'.
Primer and acrylic? Or do you want to keep the "plastic" finish?
-

a tarp, or builders scaffolding (would be interesting for a playability pov)
-
Just double skin the roof. Plain card or thin plastic card with thin strips if you want to represent sheet metal with panels. Corrugated cardboard or plastic card if you want wriggly tin. Not the most exacting of modelling tasks. Measure, cut, glue. Every time I deal with an MDF model, it has to be re-roofed. It's an added expense but then again so are glue and paint.
-
Found a photo showing the roof:
The lettering on the righthand side of the roof on the right are pronounced in their rise maybe some tarps or something will obliterate them.
Too big for my use but looks like there is also a control tower in the line.
-
Paint the roof with two colours and a blocky boundary between the two, do some scaffolding, some tarps, some paint cans, bits of rope, and the roof is being repainted.
-
The odd thing about those Plasticville planes, apart from their dimunitive size, is that the actual aircraft they most resemble is, of all things, the Supermarine Swift. The Swift was not a glowing success for its makers or the RAF for that matter and is a bit of a forgotten aircraft these days, although Airfix was kind enough to produce a newly tooled one a few years ago.
Scalpel and some sandpaper should remove that embossed lettering.
-
Ah, now I see the problem. I think @anevilgirraffs's suggestion would be simplest: have a "damaged" roof with a tarp covering the sign.
Maybe a "gun platform" over the sign? Extra playability as well.
Alternatively, replace the roof with a card version?
-
Carlos: see Cat's comment about "wicked hard plastic" above.
After looking at that photo for a while, I'm thinking not just covering the roof top lettering but mirroring that cover parallel on the other side to give the roof line just a tiny bit of pizzazz. And, of course, painting the covers in a complimentary (or contrasting?) color than the rest of the roof.
Not so easy sourcing buckets and tools in 15 mm - they are out there but few and far between. Might be able to use smaller HO items in a pinch but relatively expensive option. But I like the idea. If someone knows of a solid source, let me know. Many applications to use such details.
-
Fairy nuff. Break out the foil baking tray tarps then.
-
Ah right, the sign on the roof. That one I did resort to the trusty #16 XActo blade and elbow grease. You can really lean into that blade for heavy cutting/carving. Probably used a 1" wide shop file too. And some Testors Contour Putty to fill in minor resulting divots.
-
And back to Gyro Town. Received most of my order from "Centrion Studios" today - and got a nice heads up that the second package was returned to them damaged and he will be replacing (and sending along damaged pieces gratis in case useful to me). Another company with good service.
So a bunch of photos of likely setup:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihxLFe0tQufYFjcC_b9_ja1y5qqyH6vYti03ydt1Ld1OZtcr6fGEW5H_a_ZuCHp86D-kPTcbvXbG4e2b6suDO7xhN7kTZ0m1w3eVAA25fNI4YupAjykhcz5r5iDFji1c6HqKn2WfkSnO3CvtJ5iqOO7Jf75Km_57JH_SULtC-uCfr1GaeBSbokbjCcK3cU/s600/IMG_9940.jpg)
The table is 2' x 4' and I think that is a good setup for a variety of. pulp adventures. At the top of the image is the "small desert village" and including the eight mud houses (NEW TODAY) in the central area (two extra supplied due to minor misprint issues!). On the far left is the abandoned desert tower which may or may not reside within Gyro.
Down the left side are the following in sequence top to bottom: desert slaver compound (I will use as a jail, sort of like the scene from The Mummy?), desert granary, desert market, and desert stable.
Down the right side in sequence top to bottom again: desert blacksmith, desert trade post (NEW TODAY), medieval tannery standing in for still in-bound desert dye work (NEW TODAY), and desert inn.
And at the bottom is the desert gatehouse and desert dock.

Last photo of Gyro - I've pulled out the medieval tannery and tried putting the abandoned desert tower in its place.
And here is an image of what is still on order, an archaeological site, quite expansive with lots of "toys" included:

In addition to the above I am waiting for, I have the following for Indiana Jones and friends to explore:
Ancient Desert Ruins
Desert Tower Ruin (Abandoned Desert Tower)
Abandoned Desert Tomb
Desert Obelisk
Abandoned Desert Mine
Yeah, I've spent a pile on all of this stuff but it will allow a wide variety of adventures so worth it. Nothing much else out there to tempt me on the figure front and I figure, why the heck not, I want it so I grabbed it.
Now time to get busy with assembling and painting! Part of that will include creating bases for those in need - and many of the items will really need them.
-
Interesting. I suspect those models have been based on the style of architecture found in Timbuktu. Scope to do some medieval battles between the Songhai Empire and the Tuaregs or French colonial adventures should you so desire.
-
I'm sure it will look fantastic once its all painted up
-
Indeed, I can see my French Foreign Legion getting involved amongst those structures.
And not forgetting this whole thread is supposed to be focused on Banana Wars, while floating at the edge of sleep I've come up with one alternate name for Los Abajos when transported to Southeast Asia: Koala Slumber (which, of course, is a play on Kuala Lumpur). Works for me. And fun. ;)
Now, how do I model an iconic eucalyptus tree in 15 mm?! :o
-
I agree, I was reminded of the buildings and especially mosques that I saw in Mali. Timbuktu is the most well known of the historical settlements there, but the mosque at Djenne is stunning!
Here is one of my photos from there:
And the smaller Sankore mosque in Timbuktu:

Eucalypts you say? A number of manufacturers do gum trees for the local model railway crowd.

Best i could come up with for 15mm Blinky Bills were these:

-
Mike,
Thanks for the photos and link. Will come in handy when time to paint - though still deciding color scheme overall. But your stuff will help.
Carlos,
Thanks. I did find JTT has gum trees at a reasonable price and right here in California - though who knows where they actually are created. Well, just checked and it seems they are made in Vietnam. No big surprise.
-
Matters no where they come from, they're all tarriff free again for now. ;)
JTT produce some useful items. Alas, much of it like their pantile roofing sheets, which were cheap and generously sized, seem to have become difficult to find hereabouts. Hmm, maybe I should organise another holiday/cheap dentistry/ battlefield tourism holiday in Vietnam. I do have a loose filling that could do with some work. :)
-
Ooh, that's quite the megalopolis, fun!
-
Much yet to decide but another order to Khurasan as well as a somewhat larger order to Eureka for some additional troops for La Ceiba.
That is cool+
-
Smokey and all, I have a quandary regarding those plastic ships and submarines (like that Growler) - do I keep them or move them along. I'm thinking the latter since the others I have just made/water lined are going to be more durable. Plus I have that stand off fleet Anton Ryzbak sent to me (no way is it forgotten, awaiting its game moment(s!)). Most likely to be kept - or cannabilized for parts - will be a submarine or two. But only need so many watercraft and only have so much storage space.
I have an order out for some critters (HO for pulp +, N scale for model railroading), river bits, ship parts, and a likely order for some additional bases. And the other portion of the Centrion order - and hopefully some unrelated archery targets for Robin Hood games. After that, not sure what might tempt me. Time to turn to painting and assembling - and gaming - and putting, as much as possible, acquisition behind me. The most likely places to tempt me: new 15 mm pulp figures that strike my fancy, African plains animals - gazelles/antelope in particular, and cave women in 'proper' dress rather than bikinis. Maybe Central American fauna in 15 mm. After that? No 'after that' at this time.
-
You build it, you paint it pink and name it USS Sea Tiger. :)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyTWmH27oAs
-
And now, the figures - or some of them - have made it to the painting table, 194 pieces including horses and machine guns along with the men. Starting with the presidential guard forces, foot, band, and ceremonial mounted unit.
Also pulled out eight 'new' figures to prep for the collection to represent the executives of the banana and coffee companies, Carmina Burana Miranda Bananas and Jitterbug Java. Oh, and their wives end/or 'squeezes'.
-
Okay, getting back on track after a brief sojourn in my personal piratical world. Need to get back to painting but first, a few episodic titles to entice you into the future, and first up where it all started:
The Great and Terrible Schlong of Kong Disaster
Terror at the Black Lagoons
Jungle Rituals Gone Awry
Beware Angry Xitomatl
Reanimation Institute Fugitives
Row for Your Lives - That’s Not a Fish!
Moai Aren’t Supposed to Glow
Purple Dolphins Don’t Goose Step
Kongorillian Showdown
Barnum’s Balloon’s Far Away Journey
Wing Walkers Flying Circus
Harry’s Bridge “Ninguno Pasará”
And that is just for the Conjuras element. Have yet to turn my focus to episodes in the African-like desert environments. Nor into the far reaches of Asian Oceania, think something sort of like Singapore Station - tigers, elephants, and really big snakes, oh, my!
-
The first batch of figures are painted and table ready for the pulp games, El Presidente's Ceremonial Guard which is comprised of a 13 figure band on foot, an armed guard of 12 on foot with the Guard leader on horseback, and the pride of all of Conjuras - the mounted men on the magnificent prancing Paso-dalusians. There are many things that cause many disagreements in this tiny country spurned by so many cartographers but every man, woman, and child of the country takes fierce pride in the horses of the guard and would have much more than strong words with anyone who cast aspersions on the animals. And woe to the life of anyone who intentionally harms the wonderful beasts.
A few photos, starting with the band:

It is a wonder to watch these horses start their prancing march and all fall into a perfect uniform leaping gait, as fine a synchronization as you will ever see - and a natural trait of the breed, a cross between the Peruvian Paso and the Andalusian native Lippizaners.
And so it begins. Much, much more to come. Been laying in a variety of ship components to work on those tramp steamers - including a third one I plan to add, longer and wider than the other two.
Edt: Band is Red over purple, foot guard is purple over red, and the mounted unit is purple over blue. Looks like the lighting washed the colors quite a bit but strong purple in person, the red and light blue came through better than the purple which looks too blue. Paint job is pretty simple, more on the toy like side for these guys.
-
Hmm, banana-crowned troops!
-
Well, it is the Banana Wars! Maybe I need to conjure up a native bear for the country that has naturally yellow fur to hide in and among the ripe bananas!? lol. Um, maybe not. A bit TOO far even for me. ;)
-
Use a wild boar; the king of nasty critters. It can run, climb, swim, dig, has a thick hide, knives mounted in its face and is a thinking foe. Truly, the king of the monsters.

Inspiration for the third Tramp Steamer which I'm going to build, already pulled aside the board to start. And she has a name:
La Alborotadora!
Hmm, given what that means, perhaps we should call her a Vamp Steamer!? lol
Still waiting on one shipment of ship parts - supplier oops being corrected. Once received, can get going on the ships.
Yellow boars? Hmm. Maybe. Maybe not.
Once encountered five very large wild sows in a wild space walk, gave them a very wide berth. How large, you ask? At least a couple hundred pounds a piece. No way I was going to mess with over a thousand pounds of wild pig, boar or sow! :o
Just primed 44 pieces of port focused scatter terrain with ten more pieces not needing paint, either painted already or carved stone.
And all the additional figures for the first scenario are ready for painting.
Good progress.
Maybe, maybe not for first scenario but have a line on a 15 mm 3D movie theater for Teatro Marionette, but emblazoned with the 'wrong' name. TM will be a nick name, then.
Off to deal with that 'annoying' real life stuff for a bit.

And the K'an villagers, again led by an old man.
Even though there are seven and eight stands for the two villager groups they each represent 12 people, varied numbers of babes in arms or children beside their mothers.

Last image shows the entire tribe as painted. 42 sculpts representing 51 'noses' or people.
Definitely went for a less 'toy-like' look, hopefully achieved.
Names? From Mayan if I got it right.
A brief foray back into Robin Hood painting for a club game mid-way through August but progress here towards that November game.

Oh, the dilemma! Gold Rush Bay has released a different jungle cruise building:

Do I buy, or don't I buy? That is the indigestion. At least it is USA based so no tariff to worry about if I do.
If I do, would definitely have to rework that modern trash receptacle portion.
N scale (1:160) version shown. Would need to request being printed at 1:100 scale for 15 mm usage.
-
Well, that kinda perfectly fits the prescription...
-
It's a beauty, too...! I'm sure our praise for it is helping your indigestion... :D

I think the main source of indigestion is the budget is undergoing some significant shock waves - maybe even a tsunami warning in order! But I expect I will cave in and buy eventually. Between now and then I think I will 'harass' the owner about adding in a variety of Harambe buildings from the Disney World town area. He does seem to have an affinity for Disney structures. Might bear fruit so worth the effort. And for those not familiar, here is a link to a bunch of photos: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/harambe-disney.html?sortBy=relevant (https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/harambe-disney.html?sortBy=relevant)
Now that would get me even more tempted! :o
-
That's a nice building if you go with it. It has a lot of personality but not to cartoonish levels.
-
I ordered that other jungle cruise building last week so just waiting for it to arrive.
And, now that the first game of Robin Hood is in the rear view mirror, I am back working on the seaport. Today I assembled - but no coloring or detailing yet - 12 pieces of piers, 4 larger and taller and 8 shorter and narrower in three different lengths. Below are some photos, one an early in process shot and the others showing the pier in a possible assemblage with ships in process.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWPe0gRIR8NMgDAJ8_85LpQzBx8B4grIt9v22KMYJSTDtFgb2PX41hex024bJkk7n181Zl8tdZ7nFpV2kZeaWwhff28U4lilKRTaRzMChWMaWZim2Yhol31qsCmyUuCNiviqbpWDskZR-iXzJN4DYz1D4iRFRrUcEfk7l4qmJCAMUx2Xq8MT18ebhUJw/s600/IMG_0355.jpg)
All materials either came from going out of business craft store sales (75-90% off!) or for dirt cheap at thrift stores, especially all those rip-off jinga blocks.

Assembled in the manner shown gives me a 9' long port.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-tuafT7nRQ-lk95rWpD84aj_qvw9d8sK8A_lYar5pkOqlqh-pO-ykUKLdsW8XtxjAxX_GPWXj3n28323PV7cGnnuT7OqW7HdCrnXmxp4ZafVs90x3AMHMjpaic6z9kKkqvnplwh57cnUs9PMwNYX4oKRgZiGA5X3vJB9hHBf7I1jD6oiiO4Tx37HEqA/s600/IMG_0358.jpg)
Just the same from the other end. This end has the fishing fleet and I will make one of the buildings a fish cannery.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdrnOZDpeg-f7pZrurKzJlU9_g-1Jg1bU3CFmpwoTkrs3ykAEBWhPJIj5BcyGJr5tRP-Ci_t652a0RyFhi7jUwAZCB-qP7-bYCz7YP-lrmZMn25wM8YwRJZYjh2VzZXrS0XjT5teOrmwIfiGkrp5XArt8Du3cWwJf9m8bZrzUkhg70LrNnYFRpaCF4tQ/s600/IMG_0359.jpg)
I very purposefully was not 'careful' in my assembly to try and get a run down look to it all. There was one pier I do need to trim a piece a bit but otherwise I am happy with it. Undersides will get paint, top sides to get stained to try and preserve the wood grain.

Nice!

Rummaging about and I found all four of the known (by me) 15 mm "Indiana Jones" figures that have been produced. The one on the right is from Khurasan and one of the other three is from Brigade (and I have another of the same figure somewhere). Don't recall the source of the other two. Obviously primed at different times but will be all painted together. Two on the left have a pistol in hand and whip at left hip with the second in line having a longer coat than the first, next in line has whip in right hand and 'cracking' it. Khurasan figure has a drawn pistol held in close (ease of molding/casting?). Why all four? Why not?
These four figures are part of a group of 28 figures (27 on foot, one with a motorcycle) that I call the Jones clan, seven of them are women. And, yes, senior and Mutt are in the mix, also Marian, Sallah, Marcus Brodie, etc. Of course, most are not designed as those characters, just my adaptations.
If anyone recalls the source of the two I don't, please advise - for the benefit of others.

Introducing the "painted" Kongorillians. Note that the two largest seen earlier in this thread have been left out, just decided they were too large and just not really needed. But still have them if I change my mind.

Her rival? Or her friend? All depends.
The entire Indy Clan is now properly ready for painting. But first, the Nemonauts are in process and I've come up with a pretty cool backstory to explain why they exist in the 1930s era of my little adventure but that is for another time.

Not really important, but I'm curious: Why do three of the monkeys have round bases and the fourth has a square base?
A truly impressive project!
-
Daunting project at times but fun.
The square base is because the figure comes on a squarish base, study the photo closely and you should be able to see.
The photo with all four apes, the front two are from Khurasan, the one in back right was found in a thrift store, all three metal. The last figure is a hard plastic found for cheap at a grocery store toy section.
