Title: 28mm Orc army for KOW - update: More Wolf Riders (21/12/2024)
Post by: Philotep on 13 January 2023, 05:40:28 PM
Hi!

If you've read my (very few) previous posts, you know that the figures I paint are mostly 1/72 plastic. But I also have an old collection of 25/28mm metal figures, that I began to gather in the 80s when I discovered RPGs and wargames (almost at the same time). I painted a few of them, but I was a really poor painter at that time, mostly unhappy with the result, so many figures remained unpainted.

These days, my son, who has a large Undead army, and I, are playing a series of Kings of War battles, which gives us the opportunity to paint, of finish, or even re-paint the old figures we had, so my Orcs were taken out of their boxes and dusted off to get some colors before being sent into action.

Only one small unit is finished so far:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR8LyiHiHbYRjvNG28hNojFu6MU4tkWjQk-H_Ek--LG7gemDaQbqLVzilip8XfXTgixrMpDb0VejBPJBxjag_BvHrVnH0XOX7xkxux_lSLX5I2-FJGTp_EU4otDtEzu7PWDEGmiCcFxSnoJ5JO71nS9pYrnqqPS1RlMwoJxqaE3fmJVysiqI2qoKMV/w640-h360/IMG_0810_trt.jpg)

They have been based using the same method as for my 1/72 Romans (see here (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=139556.0)). These figures were made by several manufacturers, including Citadel, Ral Partha, Grenadier, Alternative Armies, Warlord Armies (the only plastic figure of the unit)... and even one I don't remember.

Most (but not all) of the other figures have received some paint, as you can see below.

Ordinary warriors:

Wolf riders, heavy and light:

Elite warriors (Rackham figures):

Trolls (plastic figures by Dark Alliance, a 1/72 plastic Fantasy manufacturer - I've seen in others topics that everybody knows that already  :D)

Goblin reinforcements: a catapult and a Goblin king on his war chariot - old GW figures from the late 80s or early 90s
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcXn0eTDI6tnLnd7HIrIgyDdDIPhudhXPuKWy4aNYL7E8sjoG8w0R7wrqEdTP6VbG60jHssrLAIrLDKXDFdMMncr3gOUHNnP99Z58DqnibS8WoyZd9seQBRtxx8Ey4REqtaUVHuBZ1Rwr42MTsesZ9mKRMBD19LGwjyMLZ2gm6LBiXKPimKyGyCQl_/w640-h426/IMG_0822_trt.jpg)

Some finished figures, at last! Vorak, the orc general, and a wizard - Rackham figures
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZcTRgHVE2-IPeR9noQkHwHCfv4zDr84PURJ9XAPh-CdziNHDf8LhPxwinrgwqhMjdsqXGgf3k4hLd4Iix2PhXZ2z9S3EamvOpf2Wwa45p6Iu278YFbbgQjBEHVYHycorplx5V_3rTQCxeYQ3E1M6rs3XuN5s6p9OWxkNXX3xBOrDcn6NcIPFUjb9E/w640-h426/IMG_0823_trt.jpg)

The result so far is a very motley crew, but I have a chance to use them all at last, and that's very pleasant. I will add new pictures in this topic as the works progress.

Fantastic - armies like this with disparate figures united by colour scheme are wonderful, and this is a great example!

I completely agree with Hobgoblin, you have a great army underway! I like how the first complete unit has figures from a few manufacturers, and some conversions, and they blend together. I also enjoy seeing some of the old figures in the mix!

Thank you very much for your comments!
@Morts: thanks to you, I could identify the Old Glory Ghost Mini Orcs! I bought these long ago, second hand, and didn't know who made them. Now I know  ;)

Hi everyone!
I've been painting Orcs from time to time all over the year since the previous post, but I have been waiting for the end of the year to do the bases and the movement trays.
Here you are one more unit, a troop of archers:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBhDlIOOlWfGQ3iKstX63k8b2ka97Z6VfgH3aVqvd7KI6p_7A3nHHQo8R3hEcLvmRJs2yzpx9nFqnTWqyqoXbf4-xQPYQriCSFbfR_XDkaTNd-v0r1YCyU3fUPEYlQPbhXCCtPCwb6nqZU_QMe-cXLuc1DWYH9jo1wlId4cTQu1v_9oW7ywywuJTgKSig/w640-h406/IMG_1287_trt.jpg)

Some close-ups to show the variety of manufacturers:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWOaVnCDPecuk9p__ARo66we-pHGEyDW62smonaCsPtXi0niBflE4YeUiMNvgcqbusFvYwGjHHbNdc6tyCNTquzruyrzHjFdwbwrgC3gX6OCzUrh3yDStbfxtDpe1l0_1WNh13uje2_G7G8fHvCMtaF79PK_7BKeKHzzy8uyQXc9toc0rUyACaB4sF8Oc/w492-h640/IMG_1306_trt.jpg)

This Citadel Orc is very special to me since it's one of the first metal figures I've bought, back in 1984. He had been painted with Humbrol paints at that time, and now he's got a second skin with acrylics.

The next one is a Grenadier figure by Nick Lund, bought in the early 90s. Since I wanted to build an army with all my old figures, you will find no less than 3 copies of this guy in the unit.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvc1aaoqvUdm-LwaxXsIwwVLsRiZAkBFovR0fF5weCywdO4anPFi9M6Ou2PMRZyrYFV8VFwJkEh-RGaIezZFnHE8GjbiouXRi9LPd8vi3UrMm37rKZX7_Xq5Q7KTeANLF6ea7NobAF6aDYOIs61TlFR2kcwRdfjx_PNGJBI7ee814h5t9LCmwS6ozT1MA/w484-h640/IMG_1308_trt.jpg)

For the one below, I am not sure, but I think that he is a Ral Partha figure, maybe not sold as an Orc. I've been reading several Ral Partha catalogs lately without finding him, could one of the scholars of this forum help me to identify him ?

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIEjdTpTGu4HT30hLRSAoLXVZewZnVspSDhDspUxx07g3Oyz5BEFkAX5-Tfl0yq729Dk3vgeTJFgZeabbU2tI5Q1Gl-uyizSQ5yCjULBXk5pKXJ0q8ZUlB4VXCZ0nHeSYNOmyJ3h4UvNjoXHpMIpUGBH433C0f9qYPM5GzG6UokGzUBdBqzTJS6rJAm9g/w476-h640/IMG_1310_trt.jpg)

For the last picture we dive inside the unit to have a look at the leader - figure by Old Glory.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWBgeZ97dJ9lr56etW2a3QuVNyPLuuRW2XTdiaA7KHuTm-YWRFcNC9OoA4IG-CrfRAbXXs053mkxOrWCBq3ugYC6iYneOtKOSDA3n1s6N01BXXcDaLFs9K4D1KBjO-dNbJHrCfHo0kfAUUqUTuLWo0vVW-_aSxiJzL3cpamR-aWpTcLDBIx-BGP8r0DXw/w640-h426/IMG_1289_trt.jpg)

Hope you like them  :)

Some great figures with excellent brush work bringing them to life. I can not identify that possible Ral Partha Orc in the leather cap but that is a brilliant sculpt.

These are superb! I love seeing disparate miniatures united by a common colour scheme - and it works so well here!

The Ral Partha guy is an Orog (orc-ogre crossbreed) by Bob Olley, from Ral Partha's AD&D range (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=AD%26D_Monsters#11-457).

Great work on your motley orc horde (the best kind of horde)! The archers look excellent, crisp painting and the basing suits them well.

Love the mix of makers in all of the units on the posts.
I recognise many who have passed through my collection - probably because I didn’t get a cohesive scheme for then.

Brilliant painting as well.

As announced, here you are another unit of the Green Horde, a troop of Heavy Wolf Riders.

As for the archers, a mix of several brand: Alternative Armies, Grenadier, Old Glory and RAFM.

A few close-ups: first, a Wolf Rider by Grenadier

Thank you very much, I do appreciate.

Last batch of figures before the end of the year, a regiment of Orc Warriors.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmqCWb0Eu7qtI7HPGR7jLl70EEJ_QYjmnm8YOhCZcRcbXfpmLuVy5VDYjx-f6IFg1fGHILBQTNwZl5w7vmcH_9GcNf10vVyUI0rC1JBIOcEfp6F9355TeggegdBKHH7yRPC6v89cGL81TCMoVIT-P-ffFrK1j6bwuZq55mHLUncKdIY4Z_dy26SElXYPI/w640-h426/IMG_1292_trt.jpg)

Same colors as for the previous units, same bases, and a mix of several manufacturers: Grenadier, Ral Partha, Alternative Armies, Old Glory and Citadel, even one plastic figure by Warlord Games.

Let's have a closer look at some of them:

1. Ral Partha Gargantua Orc(z): a design from the 90s, but a figure I bought this year
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpFMQPSjgyLJcxyys61DDSBovll_uiItvzP__WovTUEKH97cuAgWbIQ5JKe9CeGgCZeLxSrd5JtZJIhmPyetvuoTPKU6g0sn2u_OYZOASctzPWtERGdQ7hL5D7spqkqKRy3BrANgG_eTLe6BBt1gMiNA_SGXl6sPJkeP5J_EOViJThFcIh1vM32rTDl_o/w640-h576/IMG_1295_trt.jpg)

2. Chronicle Hobgoblin - because I love this range and I love painting white fur:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfwY0Xo3mH6JyBD63zrGgYxFMnxHG72XAl_5iyvSg6UcgxnUi2SkIsBQ1qJm4ASL8BIX4oPNVOvYuDScSQfIwhwFeerANRjGyC1sBi-yyiRF8M6C2RbwO33h8KQ_ICm68cSVPgKvppJyNr4qd5_pXdnpvxFm4f8vKWN1aSQEQl2YnXFVSlPpYUBxsM6-Y/w640-h552/IMG_1302_trt.jpg)

3. Armageddon Giant Goblin - Armageddon was a french manufacturer from the 90s, but except for a page in a magazine named Casus Belli (see below), I couldn't find anything about them on the web. I only know that this figure is the first of a series of 12:

4. The Unknown Orc figure - Grenadier ? Metal Magic ? I unfortunately don't remember, and I probably never knew since most figures I've bought were out of their blisters. Does any of you have the answer ?
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguF1sIMzcNZGn9uUjHgqA-aPbF7MrTLrma4Lxm6T8gfdY5CTZaWGe6EoD82Srg1GnKmvpBIOXns2gWQvBTgGtUv76T3j3zkdMBr-eh6_BYPwWlkM-7zXGpAokbV2afP7FpJin2hItytoAYl9MVEshVGhfT24TmkSInSbSsL_0QTeoad5_3FR2tEvx3X-U/w640-h572/IMG_1304_trt.jpg)

More pictures and explanations here (https://philotepsfigures.blogspot.com/2023/12/the-green-horde-regiment-of-orc-warriors.html).

That's all for today and for 2023. It still have many units to complete:
- 3 other regiments of warriors
- 2 troops of orcs on wolves (one with bows)
- 1 horde of trolls (6 figures according to KOW, 3 are painted)
- 1 troop of archers
- 1 regiment of boar riders, one is painted as you can see below:

You will probably have recognized the venerable Skull Crusher, released by Citadel in 1986. A lot of funny details... I like it a lot!

That is just excellent! I don’t think I have ever seen that model painted (certainly never as well painted). You are right about the details, all of the metal fittings look like they have faces or some other decorations! Your choice of colours and painting techniques suits the model very well.

Thank you very much area23.

It's time for an update (I've never painted so many green things before): 10 more Orc warriors forming a troop for KOW.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4WWi6vzlKoYv3dzKEDDgZVxYnGzn0ialWpHt5b58Mzn5-6r21zbzmdOj_5tKFcTvMGRAf__uf5RBEMOoQ2m5Y5kHlOJdEESeWLFJP0OG7tqsJINmdksjNGjKpFij9pTIMbAzt1NoStV-HdjlmGt1EZmi97UnEa2Ndkh1Vlg9krK_Y5G8pKKsN5MUdjT0/w640-h426/IMG_1337_trt.jpg)

A mix of several manufacturers as usual. Among them, you may recognise a Grenadier warrior with a new shield:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Q0f8HeifRtyCys5chaDsA4dcoMdyhzpUm91QE_Z2sXaj9Cimba_-w0LlbDs9etv1EecsWpkIaEQUI5bvdJqdsOWo00eqCVtw5LlufEiAAB0Fu3ndJnRHgjX3hv_67KQKs34QZfNWv0jNbuveLML-254U0hMBRsskP5bWd9uP3nAOXgpTxWkv-3aHB-M/w640-h426/IMG_1340_trt.jpg)

That shield comes from a 1/72 Assyrian set  :D
The next one is a Hobgoblin from the famous Chronicle range:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi77RCR2xMO-UTA_bNUW4qege15NygQP1AaFqwgmP2E90TWOzt4o1SUCjtgfp66Mk5KxVQ6BtCSfAB2RZ0LtkglKSq2tkgHlOiAtFD5QfXz6_6AR7lCZVQj38LnZ1ost-pMym91_4Aj1eAJmFBPyEoEnEIyZnABN9HDegwzFtP-U0D8TAB70gxNIVwqNUY/w640-h584/IMG_1346_trt.jpg)

And last, a group of Orc warriors by Ral Partha - though I couldn't find them on Lost Minis Wiki, maybe I'm wrong ?
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYLCG_dg9D0Nx8x8ZEDESj_kX3t_WGRVjlE2qUX76vbt91ICfydAqpSLP26Xgi6yv85uCPk3KG0D0NidJmebs2BsyAGnZxIpA35B6H8X0Srsw1eeYgln1IAvhlr76oU-0axrOSMoyiufQ7yS3u3GL0NZI0sddiuiv8o-qIQJcOuigorbCsUYEr8PCdJ2k/w640-h426/IMG_1348_trt.jpg)

Definitely not fed up, I never get tired of seeing progress on armies like yours! The new unit looks great.

I don’t recognize the three mystery orcs - they’re a similar sculpting style to Ral Partha’s orcs, but different equipment and a more upright posture. I will be interested to hear where they come from, if anyone is able to identify them.

Oh yes, this one I know since Hobgoblin gave me the answer that I copy here: The Ral Partha guy is an Orog (orc-ogre crossbreed) by Bob Olley, from Ral Partha's AD&D range.
Here you are a link: AD&D Monsters by Ral Partha (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=AD%26D_Monsters#11-457)

The third one is also on my todo list.

Glorious!

The mystery orcs are by Sandra Garrity for Grenadier: they're the two command figures  (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Fantasy_Legends#3118)for the Orcs of the Shattered Bone (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Lost_Lands#3001_Orcs_of_the_Shattered_Bone) and one of the tribal champions (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Fantasy_Legends#3119).

You're right once again! I thought they were Ral Partha because of the similitudes of their bases with those of Ral Partha's Goblins. I have now to change my blog post.
How can you know all these miniatures so well ? Oh maybe you're the main contributor to Lost Minis Pages  :D
Your knowledge impresses me a lot.

I'd like to think that it's all to do with having "the eye" (as Bruce Chatwin described the most natural antiques experts at Christie's). But I'm afraid it's all down to a severely misspent youth!  ;)

You certainly have an eye for figures, at least! Thank you again for your constant help in identifying all these small creatures.

Today's update is rather modest, since I have much less time to paint than during December break.

This guy is Tork the Animal. He's a wizard from the Orcs of Bran-o-Kor - Rackham Orc figures for their Confrontation game. Let's say that the Green Horde is a Confederation, and that they are one of the allied clans.

A close-up showing Tork with his bodyguard - another Rackham Orc.

Hope you like them :)

Hi! Something after several months of inactivity. I could paint a new unit for my Orcs army, with just a single figure: a giant Troll, or a punching Troll according to the KOW Orcs army list:

Here you are a new group of Orc warriors, once again from various manufacturers.

Thank you very much for your comments, it's very encouraging!

The painted army so far is made up of:
- 50 Orc warriors
- 15 Elite warriors (Rackham figures, larger than the others)
- 11 archers
- 8 Wolf Riders
- 2 heavy Boar Riders (Mantic plastic)
- 4 Trolls
- 1 giant Troll
- 1 Goblin catapult with 4 crew

Still a lot to do! On the workbench:
- 50 warriors
- 14 archers
- 8 Boar Riders
- 3 Orcs for a foot general element
- 7 Wolf Riders
- 1 Orc Wizard on wolf
- 5 Elite warriors

and also Goblin Allies:
- 1 General on his war chariot
- 15 Goblin Warriors (I need at least 25 others, I will buy some at Knightmare miniatures, and I'm looking for old Kev Adams references)
- 12 Goblins on giant spiders (Wargames Atlantic - first spider on its way)

And probably some others if I find time or if I don't stick to the plan  :D

Some of you will have identified an old but very nice figure sculpted by Nick Lund for Grenadier. I will also use him as a general.
Hope you like him  :)

Chimpfoot, Basementboy, thank you very much for your comments and sorry for the delay.

Let me show you some reinforcements for the foot regiments of the Green Horde.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6aHZHMSIvzqtrcc5Xoj2PhLOHuGGJMEN8Ly4FO9I51YiOi9F2fThdNeck6U1X_yOnEF8hfV6_w1X24Ed4rCK5_II1lVXpNrqpdMgQhblmN7Vd7jTa1y9_cQsGAA1qWtF1dEQ2Bh5r-o5VTPe3g3ouEx-MovesVAcGWZPGmJIlx65vJvT7Y-N5mQdDj84/w640-h426/IMG_2003_trt.jpg)

Here is the standard bearer, from of a famous Regiment of Renown, Harboth and the Black Mountains Boys, next to a similar Citadel warrior for comparison.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPmEONA5vkLoZ6EZD9pFvElZ_wjWzWV6gAnYGNJlho02UlrU9tXMuMy2igx-EPdNaCwT0xGrXxSC3SjFaVuxJk-5W01mp-9fvwTjoNka_qaeeTg87sPNzrScjcmeeiB916uLQvB9ipe_3lZbIzDT55bkt2eY_W-1_EU5_mBXtJzBqVbUaARNbTwh0Xm24/w640-h442/IMG_2010_trt.jpg)

The next one is Maniac, a C15 Orc, from a range sculpted by Alan and Michael Perry and released in 1985.

And last, a few more archers from various manufacturers (Citadel, Grenadier, Old GLory and Reaper).

Great work! As others have mentioned, you do a really great job of making minis from different manufacturers and time periods work together. That's inspiring for someone whose pile of plastic and metal stretches back into the last century (as I imagine a good number of people's piles here do). Thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much for your annual comment  :D

I, too,  hope it won't last too long, but I have at least 4 other armies to complete in 2025:
- an Alahan force (using old Rackham figures) for SAGA
- an Imperial Roman army for l'Art de la Guerre
- a German army for l'Art de la Guerre
- a mythological Egyptian army for l'Art de la Guerre - Fantasy version (home rules)

Wish me luck and steadiness!
