It has been in my dreams for years. To put together a Nikephorian/Macedonian Dynasty Byzantine Army. The why etc will become apparent as the story of expeditious hand and brush movements become more apparent. Suffice to say, for now, that it goes back to the early 2000's and the games of Warhammer Ancient Battles we used to play with faithful devotion every week. It was Andrew Eason's Thematic Byzantine army, stunningly and lovingly painted, which drew my eye then and ever since, I have craved such an army. Gripping Beast's Black Friday sale made it an irresistible opportunity!
For more information and many more pictures of the individual miniatures and bases please feel free to pop over to my Just Add Water Blog here:

Beautiful work, and definitely eye-catching! :)

Those are Epic.

Oh my. They're the stuff of wargamers' dreams. Gorgeous.
-
Thanks guys- appreciated :)
Much more to come, a whole army in fact! o_o
-
Well - that's one way to pass on the infection of inspiration.
Look forward to more, but not another project for me ::)
Well not yet anyway - let the inspiration/envy sink in more :D
Stunning as ever

Truly beautiful :-*
The whole army will look amazing - I cant wait to see it.
I assume you have solved your varnishing issues?

Many thanks Tactalvanic :)

Thanks David. It's a dream project so that combined with the challenge myself part of The Analogue hobbies Painting Challenge I should progress quite quickly (at least that's the plan! lol )
I assume you have solved your varnishing issues?
Yeah, quite some time ago. The varnishing issues were the result of a certain vendor either being radically mistaken about one of their products or, and I hate to say it, just plain lying about one of their products! I was assured that the varnish was a dead flat matt, in fact it was more of a gloss(!). I had no other option than to spray my matt over the top to try to rescue the miniatures which reacted with the gloss varnish underneath and ruined the figures.
Overall, very bad form on the part of the vendor.

Glad its sorted. I have moved over to AK Interactive Ultra Matt varnish - its easy to brush on and have had no issues at all, and it is the mattest varnish I have ever used.

Very impressive.

Thanks chaps :)

Agreed, AK Interactive is fabulous and I do occasionally use it where I've missed spots with the W&N Pro Matt Spray. I mostly use a Humbrol DIY Enamel Gloss before matting down and even the AK Interactive won't take on top of the gloss thus the W&N Pro Matt Spray first.

Thank you Andrew, it's always great to hear words of encouragement, especially with a project of this magnitude! o_o

You are welcome. You really bring those units to life!

As Humbrol Gloss is becoming difficult to obtain here in Canada, I have switched to the AK Interactive Gloss varnish. Goes on easily with a brush and although it requires a 12 hour cure time, I have been leaving it for 24 hours before applying a second gloss coat - the first seems so thin when compared to polyurethane varnish.
Another 24 hour cure and then brush on the AK Interactive Ultra Matte Varnish.

Methinks I owe you a pint lol

Ah, I never thought of Humbrol being difficult to buy abroad. Bummer!
I have used Acrylic varnish in the past, yet even on acrylic canvases it is far inferior to polyurethane varnish in terms of protection and durability. I dare not gloss varnish my miniatures with a good enamel polyurethane varnish as I've had paint chip off various models where I had just used acrylic varnish in the past.... it's just so damn depressing.

Beautiful stuff.

Thanks mate- appreciated. More to come soon in a few days (I have to wait to give the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge 48 hours with the piccies before reposting- which is fair enough :) )

I have to admit that I’m not very fond of these sculpts with the old school proportions, but your painting is really elevating them and making them appealing to the point of having some second thoughts about them lol
-
Thanks.
I quite like the sculpts. Like all painting in wargaming, it's possible to bring anything to life with a little tender loving care.
Although I'm not mixing and matching with the Nikephorian Byzantine army, it's possible to produce some very nice looking units like the one below just by working with what is in front of you.
-
Great looking Byzantine cavalry. Makes me want to get moving and see to my Nikephorians, still suffering from years in storage. Mix of Hinchliffe, Essex and Gripping Beast, many still to be painted.. All up they need a lot of work, apart from painting need re-basing, new lances, standards, penons ........
Seeing your excellent work gives me much needed encouragement!

I'm putting the army together, as best as I can with the miniatures available to cover the Nikephorian dynasty (802 to 813) through to the end of the Macedonian dynasty- possibly into the early years of the Komnenian dynasty. I just wish someone made good 28mm Byzantine Skutatoi models in fabric armour- well, actually someone does do so but unfortunately they are very difficult to get hold of at the moment.
Seeing your excellent work gives me much needed encouragement!
It would be great to see what you do with the army :)
-
Lots of work to be done to get them into shape!
Presume you have seen this chap - Hinchliffe "peltastoi", good size sculpt, perhaps a little quirky? https://www.lancashiregames.com/lg/hinchliffe-miniatures/25mm-dark-ages/25mm-late-byzantine/hin/ba3-peltast.html
Padded armour, sold mine off ages ago but I see Lanchashire Games has them on their site.

There wasn't much choice back in the day so I remember them well. They don't really fit in with what I'm using- I was tempted to use the Drabant range but then you know what happened and that was the end of that.

My 48 hours of offsetting publishing on social media for the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is now up and I can, at last, present to you the next unit in my growing Thematic Byzantine army.
This unit represents a body of soldiery living on the margins of the Themes. Lightly armoured "Light" cavalry used in the main for scouting though sometimes in battle they might be called upon to take the role of Defensores and/or Cursores and to this end I will be adding a back rank of six Hippo Toxotai. The unit will contain six for Hippo Toxotai per unit to act as Defensores and four Hippo Toxotai for Defensores. I hope that makes sense!?!
More pictures of the unit and some close ups of each miniature can be seen on my Just Add Water Blog here:

For now, here are some images of both the unit and a couple of close ups:

Steve at Little Big Man Transfers will be very pleased to hear that :) the LBMS range of transfers for both shields and banners is excellent.

These are so magnificent that I have to post an Akritic song. The translation is ruining the feel but it’s enough to complete the picture
Young Kostantinos and brave Alexis
and the young Vlach who fought in castles
the three were eating and drinking
and sweetly singing all together,
and had their horses tied together to the same block of wood.
Kostantinos' horse ate iron, Alexis' horse ate rocks
and the young Vlach's horse could uproot trees.
As they were eating and drinking and singing sweetly together,
a little bird came and perched upon the block's right side.
It didn't sing like a bird or like a swallow,
it spoke with a human voice.
- Here you are, eating, drinking and sweetly singing,
while Saracen corsairs pillage behind your backs.
They've taken Kostantinos' children, Alexis' wife
and the girl who would wed the young Vlach.
[Before Kostantinos had saddled his horse,
before Alexis had mounted his,
the young Vlach was already galloping away.
- Hey, young Vlach, get down to the watchtower and take a look.
If you see fifty or a hundred men, dash down and slaughter them.
If you see more, come back and we'll go all together.
So he rode to the watchtower and took a look, gazing down upon the vastness.
He saw the plains red and the mountains blue
and was ashamed to go back and afraid to march forward.
- Steed of mine, will you swim through rivers of blood?
- Master, I will swim through rivers of blood.
He brought the whip down and they burst onto the plain.
Leaping down, he killed a thousand,
leaping back he slew two thousand more,
and when he made his final turn, there were no foes left alive.
He took back Costas' children and Alexis' wife
and the young Vlach's bride-to-be.]

Another addition to my (slowly) growing Thematic Byzantine army. This time the famous/infamous Varangian Guard.
For many more pictures and the usual discursive meanderings p-lease feel free to pop over to my Just Add Water Blog here:

As I say, you will find many more pictures including those of the individual bases- and some nice hem decor! ;)
I noticed that all the shield armed models came open handed and with four poses available I wanted to have as much variation as possible. I chose to clip off some of the right hands and replace with different weapons as seen below:

Cor, they're excellent. And as a very recent convert to free-handing hems I took your advice and visited the blog. Lots of beautifully executed ideas there which I may try and emulate at some future point (baby steps and all that). I also love how they're definitely Vikings but they still have a strong Byzantine vibe, which is a pretty impressive trick to pull off. Probably my favourite unit so far (but then I've always been a sucker for the adventures of Haraldr Sigurðarson).

The Varangians have a very specific romantic, if I may use that word when referring to warfare, image and are an extremely attractive prospect to paint up- mind, I'm glad they're done! lol

Thank you. Good to hear that someone feels the weapon swaps were worth it :)

I saw these on my phone, but wanted to wait to see them properly on my computer instead before commenting. To echo the others, really nice work, great colour balance and movement across the unit, striking contrasts, and the weapon swap models don't look repetitive in the unit. Very well done! 8)

Just awesome..
-
Masterful brushwork! Fantastic looking figures!
-
Simply stunning and a joy to behold. Have you used them in any games yet? What rules do you tend to use for this period?
-
Thank you for all the encouraging words guys :)

Thank you :) It is indeed great to read that all that faffing about with the weapon swaps was worth it and had the desired result.
Simply stunning and a joy to behold.
Cheers- much appreciated.

No, they're fresh off the painting table and I only have three units painted up so far. The whole army is being painted up for The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge which ends in (gulp!) mid March!
What rules do you tend to use for this period?
I've based all the Thematic Byzantines up with a wee bit of a nostalgia in mind. Based for WAB which might come as a surprise to some! Possibly including me! lol
-
Apologies, I meant to include this before but kept forgetting.....
For anyone who doesn't know much about, or is just curious about The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, run for three months every year, here's a link:

linky bookmarked for later detailed reading :)
Thank you kindly.
Now back to looking at the eye candy you keep painting up

He-he.... thanks
The Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge is really worth checking out. It's a challenge (surprise, surprise) and not a competition in any sense of the word except maybe to oneself.
-
Those are superb!
The best Varangians I can remember seeing.
Those conversions really help add variety too.

Many thanks Dave.

Being able to go to town with the bright colours has been a lot of fun. It's also one of those dream armies too so the enthusiasm has been maintained thus far :) (BTW, my Early Byzantines were also a dream army and they are only halfway through!)

Thank you Tactvanic.
Yeah, I really am enjoying painting up the army. At some point I'm going to have to start thinking about painting up some Abbasid's too!
Cheers

Thanks mate. After spending what seemed like an age cleaning them up I can feel what you're saying. Still, a nice paintjob can work wonders :)

For many more pictures and a detailed description of the arms and armour plus tactical use of the Nikephorian) Kataphractoi please feel free to pop over to my Just Add Water blog here
http://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2023/03/byzantinetagmatic-nikephorian.html (http://justaddwater-bedford.blogspot.com/2023/03/byzantinetagmatic-nikephorian.html):
Almost certainly the most attractive of all the units in an early 10th CE Thematic Byzantine army are, of course, the Kataphractoi. Fully enclosed in many layers of armour, invincible like a middle ages version of the battle tank. Well, not quite but that is certainly the impression they were meant to have on the enemy. One Arab soldier poet described the Byzantine horses as having no legs!

Oh wow. They really are spectacular. The detailed light and shade on the armour of both horses and riders is pure class. I also choose to believe that you free-hand painted all the shields. ;)
Like you say, having this lot rumble towards you back in the day must have been pant-wettingly terrifying.

Amazing use of colour on these - they are just beautiful!

Thanks Old Hob.

If you're willing to suspend belief then I will do so also! lol Not too sure about Steve at LBMS Transfers though!

Although limited in numbers, they must have been an awesome sight as they moved as one toward you!

I look at the close ups and see how you've done the techniques, thinking though the brush strokes required. Then I remember how small all this is in real life and how I have trouble staying in the lines at all. lol
Lovely art D.

Careful mate- that way madness lies- trust me, I'm there lol

It is honestly just practice mate - with a bit of obsessiveness thrown in o_o
Lovely art D.
Thanks mate, appreciated old bean :)

5000 points in three months!!!??? Is it possible? Place your bets folks!!! lol lol
-
If I were a betting man I would back you on it.
But I am not as that takes away from the miniatures budget with no guarantee of returns to re-invest... in more miniatures.
Vicious circle but one addiction is enough :D
Do the best you can, either way its going to be quality and worth seeing how you get on.

Although this isn’t my gaming period, by hundreds of years, yours are some of my most go-to threads. Not just for your exemplary painting, but as much for the thought process and basing arrangements. Keep it going.

So........ the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge ended on March 20th.
For those who expressed a wish to see the army arrayed- here it is.....
Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge 2023 Wrap Up!
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid4lXcev7eyFjXiUymQsOFoKBHlzontqhJOz-wb72OkazMoy61W0AnlY-NYRcQ6-ePJs0UI9WY2jc9n_PgT7-BdntahJv9fobHqmGEgc_w5QmfDBIqu6X1yKFoOkaZWBnw57j7R9SIVOWOrSOlj5TL4Fu5BArirbCW2omIog-KmjF3h9xaFXMB6WtQ/s1639/COVER.jpg)
I want to thank everyone who contributed to The Challenge this year and also make a bit of an apology. I didn't manage to make half as many comments this year (still in therapy and that's taking up a lot of time- without denting my pain ting time though!). For that I'm sorry as there was a fine array of beautifully painted miniatures etc on display every day when I took a quick peek.
I've decided to leave out the incidental items painted to change things up a little as I view my main project as, well erm..... my main project!
The Thematic Byzantines were a lot of fun to paint up- like I have alluded to earlier, they are one of my dream armies that I just never got around to when I was a few years younger.
Please feel free to hop on over to my Just Add Water Blog for full sized pictures/files here:

Dude you can so proud! That is what the hobby is all about!

One of my favourite projects of this years AHPC, DH. I am excited to see your Seleucid stuff as well; it seems like a new direction for you.

Magnificent.

What a superb project it has been Darrell, it has been a pleasure watching it grow over the last three months of the challenge.
I need to do my post today sometime

Thanks Batu. That's what the Challenge is all about- challenging oneself.

Thanks mate. Appreciated. I've gone deep with the Seleucid army to the point that, under the expert guidance of Keith at Aventine, I'm making sure I get the helmets exactly right for the Daphne Parade era! This rules out about 80% of available miniatures but I want to get this right- or, rather, as right as we can get it o_o
Magnificent.
Thank you Old Hob

Thanks Matt buddy. It was a pleasure to be able to take part with my full attention this year. Last year was a huge "fail".

Indeed you do mate, if for nothing else other than selfish reasons on my part :D

A few pictures of the army arrayed as of 2023. I've got a few units that have not been photographed yet but will endeavour to get them all out on the tabletop this coming Thursday and take a few snaps of the whole army.

Nice work, love the figs.
Thank you.
Also, the thread necromancy is quite impressive!
Sometimes painting an army can be a bit of a labour of love and can take a few years to finish (though the wise miniature painter knows they're never really complete). I prefer to take my time over my projects, sometimes popping from one to another, this might last a few months, maybe years. Surely the importance is the end result?
-
Thread was not dead, just resting..
Sometimes you have to wait, for reasons.
End result here is always worth seeing from your brush, excellent PJs as always and very nice additions to the army.
Its only 2025 its not been that long for a project update..

Both forces look superb.
Really trying not to get to far into historical as well, its not like I even have enough time for everything else. Damn you work, if only I did not need the money. lol
Still, very nice.
What was the action, just getting them on the table or a particular battle/scenario?

Thanks. I'll pass on your goodly words for Mario and his Medieval Muslim Indian army too.

All is patience, ergo the length of this thread ;) :)

It was part of a themed (Eastern European/Levantine armies) WAB event. A type of tournament though only a few players really treat it as so- it's much more a gathering of friends.

Wonderful stuff. :-* :-*

Thanks :)

My congratulations to both you and Mario on two fantastic looking armies. This is the sort of battle that so many of us would love to be able to play, or even just watch.

Thank you Matakakea. It was a fab weekend. There were quite a few nice looking armies at the event.

Cheers Batu, I'm trying to colour code the units so that there are Red, Green and Blue (very Hippodrome-esque) for a unit each of Barded and Un-barded Tagmatic Cavalry. just to make the "regiments" look more Tagmatic as opposed to Thematic, where the units would have contained more of a mix. Having said that, i'm not sure how successful I will be as all the iniatures i have leand themselves more to uniformity then not.
Example of "Red" Barded Tagmatic Cavalry:

Thank you Digits, very nice to hear as like the horses they were a wee bit rushed. I wish I had managed my time better before Tim's extravaganza but hey ho! That's the way it goes at times :)

Hi,
I've taken pictures of all the miniatures in the unit, now on single bases so if you are of a mind to, you can see the miniatures from three angles which ought to display them nicely as single pieces.
As usual, if you want to see more pictures, please head over to my Just Add Water Blog here:

No probs, but, you are giving me way too much credit in terms of generalship! They did quite the opposite and went fleeing at the slightest hint of trouble!
It was a fun packed day and I think much loved by those who attended 8)

For the sake of completeness here's all the single base pictures.....

Love them! Do you have a tutorial showing your painting technique? I'm guessing you paint the mid-tone over the shadow and then highlight once more, layering roughly three times. Plus some blacklining, right? No washes, I assume? Really interested in your method!

Thank you and yes, I do (kind of) have a (probably incomplete) but decent #set of articles on how I paint miniatures on my blog, but for the sake of convenience I'll post them again here, though you are more than welcome to pop over to my blog:

You are kind of partly but are missing two more layers and the black liber is not actually black liner (for the most part) but black left to be seen through the layers as they are applied- they are cleaned up via lining at the end of the process but this is minimal largely because it tends to look like an afterthought rather than an integral part of the process. I went to Art College so my painting is a reflection of that, though thankfully painted in acrylics and not the unforgiving oils! Please bear in in that these articles are now five years old and painting is always a developmental process.
Painting Justinian Byzantine Heavy Infantryman Step By Step Part One:
OK, onto the painting! The first twelve models of the unit. One thing I had to bare in mind was that I was painting these miniatures for the table top en masse, thus I needed to take a few shortcuts such not painting in eyes and instead leaving black areas where they eyes settle on the face, dry brushing metals instead of painting in each scale. (I once had a GW High Elf Army in which I had religiously painted in very scale on each model. The army took several years to complete!! Crazy!)
Due to certain health concerns I predicted that I was simply not going to be able to get out of the house to get to my usual usual suppliers for paint etc and it wouldn't be long before they to be temporarily closed so I managed to grab five Army Painter matt black undercoat via the net just prior to the lockdown. Happy with this I then cleaned and primed the miniatures only to discover that the after spraying carefully the surface was glossy and the primer had pooled! Not a great start! (Those Army Painter Cans are now relegated to use on terrain only). I have a couple of cans of Halfords Matt Black Enamel which was a godsend this saved me from hand priming mini's with Humbrol Matt again. It's not that I dislike using Humbrol Matt Black Enamel, it certainly has it's uses. It is bit of a faff on applying it and to be honest the company changed the formula somehow quite a few years ago and the stuff has not been as good since. It's a bit like comparing the old Testors Dullcote to the new stuff. No comparison in my humble opinion.
I did have a jar of Golden Acrylic Black Gesso, which always leaves a very flat, very matt surface on the miniature so I was able to salvage the next batch of four which was a huge relief. You might ask, why not just use the Gesso in the first place? The reason is that although Gesso gives a brilliant flat matt finish that really accentuates the details on a model,, it is quite a fragile coat and can be brushed off quite easily. Thus I prefer to prime with a spray primer before applying an undercoat, which could be Gesso or Vallejo Air Matt Black 'Primer' which is really an undercoat.... but I digress.
The mail was simply a dry brush of of Citadel Bolt Gun Metal (or equivalent) darkened with VMC Matt Black, then Citadel Bolt Gun Metal, then Citadel Iron Breaker and lastly Citadel Runefang Steel. The whole thing was then given a wash of watered down Nuln Oil. This I may have applied to thickly and next time the mix will contain a little more water. It is important to dry brush each layer with a slightly more deft touch each time only brush the lighter tones on the highest of ridges (if any) on the armour. If i remember tomorrow I'll take a few snaps of the metals and colours in order of use as a visual reference is a most often lot easier to remember.
For Iron and Steel I have stuck to using Citadel paints over the years as I have had no problems with coverage or inconsistencies in the pigment. I have used Army Painter Paints which are much smoother and have a good amount of pigment but I was going to be dry brushing so the question of a smooth finish did not enter the equation.
Citadel Paints for the Steel/Iron Armour:

The scale and lamellar armour on these heavily armed Byzantine Infantry would be made of steel or iron plates but I wanted a bit of a contrast between the the mail and the scale/lamellar so I chose to paint this particular armour as if it had been gilded. Opting for a bronze look I picked out a selection of Vallajo Game Colour metals as they are packed with pigment and as I would be dry brushing again this was crucial.
The scale and lamellar was painted with VGC Hammered Copper and when completely dry given a slightly watered down wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade. It was then just a case of light and lighter dry brushes of VGC Brassy Brass, VGC Bright Bronze and finally a mix of 70% VMC Bright Bronze/30% Polished Gold on the absolute high points on detail. I might end up painting a final highlight of this armour at a later stage dependent on how the colours work together on the model later on.

The flesh was painted on in thin layers with a base coat of Army Painter Tanned Flesh followed by a watered down wash of Army Painter Flesh Wash and left to completely dry. I was not concerned about the wash bleeding into the eye sockets which I had left black as this gave them a warmer, fleshier quality. Then a layer of Army Painter Barbarian Flesh followed by a layer of Army Painter Elven Flesh on the highest points of the cheek bones, the upper lip and a highlight on the chin (which would be reflected light). Finally the lips were painted in with VMC Brown Rose and a very fine highlight of Salmon Pink.

Phew! I thought you had found a humungous painting error! lol

I entered the painting competition run every year at Carronade, Falkirk and entered three entries (all below) which, in the end, all ended up in the same category (a bit weird given the variation in my entries). I can only assume that given to the preponderance of Sci-fi and Fantasy miniatures in the comp (90-95% Sci-fi and Fantasy) not much thought had been given to any potential historical categories. Or perhaps there simply was no need for such categories due to the relative lack of historical entries(?). Maybe this will change by next year. I'm certainly going to have a polite chat and make a few suggestions to the organisers. BTW, I love painting miniatures, and this is a subject is I would feel just as strong about had I come last.
So, my unit of 12 Early Byzantine (Belisarius, Narses era) won first prize in the Group or Regiment category. at the time of painting I did in fact lavish some time on as, being the Boukellaroi, they were one of the centrepieces of the army. As it happens, they haven't seen the tabletop yet as the rules we play place unrealistic/ahistorical restrictions on the Early Byzantine Boukallaroi!

Well deserved, that’s a truly beautiful army and that banner is sublime!

Congratulations! Well deserved, as Pattus Magnus wrote before!

Definitely well deserved. Unreal presentation. I have a sneaking suspicious that more than one of those sci-fi / fantasy players were enthralled by this unit. I hope you can get it on the table soon to smash through some lines.

Thank you to all for the positivity- it means a lot.
Legio217, i might just play them in the next game, with the army general as prescribed by the rules and see how they go. What could possibly go wrong? lol

They may prove difficult to maneuver with the added frontage from the Trophy, so I say line them up for a straight shot at the enemy general and CHARGE!
And don't forget the 2d6 impact hits from Trophy.
;) Have fun !
