Title: Raglan's African Bush Wars (Hollywood Style)
Post by: Lord Raglan on 31 January 2023, 10:10:06 PM
50 ZANLA Infantry. Until about 1971, ZANLA's strategy was based on direct confrontation with the Rhodesian Security Forces, but from 1972 onwards, it adopted the guerrilla tactics that had been used with success by the Mozambique Liberation Front.

African Villagers. Any self-respecting Bush Wars collection requires civilians and villagers, as ZANLA often conducted operations against these types of soft targets.

3 Commando, Rhodesian Light Infantry. These lads were nicknamed the “Lovers”. They were the youngest Commando in the Regiment and the most Rhodesian. Four sticks of four guys in a troop with the callsigns: Banana One, Banana Two, Banana Three and Banana Four 🍌

If you are wondering why their callsign includes the word Banana, it’s because their badge had a banana on it. The stick leader has a back pack radio and an FN, one man carried a MAG and the other two blokes carried FNs, one had a muzzle attachment for a rifle grenade.

ZANLA Guerrillas undertake a raid over the Mozambique border on the hunt for supplies and “comfort”women. Good job they didn’t raid Cwmbran, as they would have been in for a shock.

ZANLA relied heavily on support from Russia and China, who basically sent them any old crap leftover from World War 2.

A polygamist, Idi Amin married at least six women, three of whom he divorced. In July 1975, Amin staged a £2 million wedding to 19-year-old Sarah Kyolaba, a go-go dancer with the Revolutionary Suicide Mechanised Regiment Band, nicknamed "Suicide Sarah".

Rhodesian Special Air Service. The SAS and the RLI played crucial roles in the domestic counter-insurgency effort during the Rhodesian Bush War. The SAS and the Selous Scouts, were the principal special forces units used in external operations.

Beautifully done.

Many moons ago I was inured in a stifling hut with 30 other odd folk on a course. A moustachioed WO2 burst in and after startling his dozing audience by shouting and banging on a desk,  proceeded to regale us with how he and a bunch of erstwhile comrades had killed several hundred guerillas in a cross border raid into Mozambique.

As twenty somethings I think we were all duly impressed with his bloodthirsty tale to greater or lesser extent. He had been in the British Army, went and fought in Rhodesia and then later went on to join the Australian Army.

Twas only later and in hindsight that I felt the urge to ask the traitorous, mercenary, c*** what (apart from filthy lucre) possessed him to break his oath of allegiance and fight for an army and state that was, at least technically,  in a state of rebellion against the Crown.

Missed opportunity, albeit one that possibly would have been quite dangerous if the question was posed at the time.
