This is the first that I have heard but there is a new John Carter of Mars movie in production
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/25/theater/25itzk.html?ref=movies
and Willem Dafoe will be playing Tars Tarkus. I can't think of anyone that would be better as a Green Martian and it sounds like he is psyched to play the part.

Great find. I am a huge Willem Dafoe fan. Such a great actor, right up there with Christopher Walken.

While I know very little about John Carter or the of Mars stuff Dafoe being part of it certainly makes me interested from the get go.
He's always been a favourite actor of mine, along with the likes of Steve Buscemi and indeed Christopher Walken.

The John Carter of Mars film is being made by Pixar and will be their first live action film. The film will be directed by Andrew Stanton who did Wall E and Finding Nemo. I am not sure if the film is based on one book or a composite of several books. Probably the latter in my opinion.
Cheers

might be R rated in US with all the people going 95% naked ;)

From my reading I believe they re planning a trilogy of the first three books, keeping my fingers crossed on this one, hope they don't f%@k it up, One of my child hood favourite books.
-
I know right! its about damn time these books got the love they deserved.
-
And a good day just got better! I just started to re-read them as well!
-
This is indeed great new's.Top actor.
-
I hope "they" do the books justice. Mars Books hold a special place in my heart along the fantastic Frazetta Book Covers.
-
Hmm.... Hollywood..... SF/Fantasy book adaptations ........ Producers'/directors' massive egos.
I'll keep my fingers crossed as I'd love to see Burroughs' Mars successfully brought to life, but I certainly won't be surprised if it goes all belly -up :-I

Part of me hopes GW don't get the licence.............and part of hopes it does.

Part of me hopes GW don't get the licence.............and part of hopes it does.
With the way the Lord of the Rings Licensing went, I doubt it.

LotR made GW a stupid amount of money for four and a half years and was always projected as a 5 year 'bubble' in revenue (which was pretty damned accurate). The problem came with a change in management etc after three years who looked at the previous sales for LotR and decided it should be made into a proper 'main range' product, and seemed to ignore the previous predictions. A year and a half later when sales began to plumit they were caught unawares.......
I doubt they'd be interested in this though, not a main stream enough product and stupidity burned them already.

don't forget "the Hobbit" comes...
From that perspective it would have made sense to stretch the product life and live through the sales drop.
When did Peter Jackson announce he wanted to shoot the Hobbit too?

There have been movie ideas bouncing around on this for decades, but maybe this time it will really happen. The ERB corporation has kept applying for trademarks on John Carter for so many decades without actually producing any commercial product that I question whether or not its trademark is even valid anymore.
Of course, who else would even try to use the John Carter story these days. It's going to be hard to make into a movie for mainstream audiences unless the characters wear a lot more clothing than they wore in the books, or even on the covers of the books! It's also going to be tough to sell the idea of people with advanced technology and projectile weapons who prefer to fight with swords. ...then again, maybe not, considering the success of Star Wars.
The first three books didn't have the greatest story lines. I liked the ideas in some of the later books better, including "Thuvia, Maid of Mars," "Chessmen of Mars," and "Mastermind of Mars."
