As part of my never ending (oh please, let it end one day!) Doctor Who project, I figured I needed some generic space crew. These seemed to fit:

The captain is an Imperial Guard advisor by GW, the rookie crew are Romulus and Remus from the BTD Who line. The engineers are Heresy's customs officers. For reasons that I don't fully understand, the varnish on the engineers has dried slightly shiny. I used W&N Galeria, and I've never had this problem before. Ever happen to anyone else? The first coat dried with a sheen, and so did the second. Very mysterious.

shaked the bottle enough?
extreme temperature change?
maybe there was too much solvent in the mix
even if it is not a spray can - varnishes work very different
had such a problem myself once
what I like to do sometimes when the bottles are not that full anymore is to heat them up in a warm water bath

Ooh, that naval officer looks good with a non-gw paint job. Might have to grab one of those.

Very nice indeed! 8)
Real shame about the varnish. I've had similar problems with Galeria. It's usually because it's not mixed enough ( too much "solvent" not enough of the varnish). A trick I use if it's starting to frustrate me is to leave the bottle upside down for a while ( 10 mins or so). Tip it up the right way , leave it a minute and use the residue from the lid.
Cheers

Great stuff. I love the 'smugness' of the Capt.

They look great. I especially love the captain. He could almost be used for VSF..... hmmmmm.

Why do you think I want one :D
He'll make a good basis for a "Sun King" Officer figure.

I use Galeria mixed with Tamiya Matt, see;

I've been using it for nearly a year and no problems - just remember to shake the bottle before varnishing!

Nice job on the crew members. They will fit Dr. Who very well indeed! Love that series. *Mumbles and rumbles over to dvd collection*

Very nice, Paul.
I do like those Heresy customs figures. Must get some for my Future Wars collection...
I've been using W&N Galeria for the last year or so, and I've never had that problem with it. I do always give it a jolly good shake before I use it though, just to make sure it's well mixed...

Very nice!
Usually problems with varnishes come: not well mixed, temperature/weather conditions including hummidity and compatibility of the other layers. Check parameters and follow instructions as per the rest posts. If nothing works add some few talc in the varnish and will be matt again.

And the rest of the crew is also suitable for VSF!

oxiana;
I have had the same problem happen to me. Get some Testors Dullcoat and give them 2 light coatings with a good half hour wait time in between each coating. The shine will disappear completely. Let me know how it works out for you.

Thanks all for the comments.
I can't say that I normally go for GW stuff, but the captain was just too lovely a sculpt to miss out on. The original mini had plenty of the usual WH40K eagles etc on it that I had to pare off, but I'm very happy with it. I hadn't clocked the VSF connection, but he'd go great wouldn't he?
The cap had his second coat of varnish added today. At the same time, I've revarnished the engineers. This has taken a bit of the sheen off, so they look better than in the pic, but they're still a bit shiny. The whole thing has been a mystery. It's the same bottle of varnish I always use, always vigorously shaken, so why these went funny is anyone's guess. Perhaps the barometer was just low that day. I really like the Galeria varnish, started on it after recommendations from LAF, but this is the only time it's behaved strangely. Just peculiar, frankly.
