Title: Really old Immortals
Post by: Jjonas on March 07, 2023, 05:00:18 AM
Just to show that one can paint an old dog with new tricks I have actually finished something this year. I have had these Vendel Immortals (28mm) for twenty years. They went dormant for years due to various reasons, but I never had enough it seems to finish units. Plus way back when the Vendels really outscaled most 28mm figures. Now plastics and other ranges are have caught up. I also realized that this being the 20th year anniversary of the printing of the Warhammer Historical Alexander the Great supplement, that I should get off my butt and finish some of the those old projects.

So this project is taking twelve robed Persian Immortals and adding in six archers to fill out a nice three rank looking bunch of 18. I decided to really pump up the colors just for kicks. The nice thing about the sculpting of the Vendels are their nice flat well carved surfaces and drapery. They are thick and I wouldn't put them in a unit with modern plastic figures, but they no longer dwarf others.  Of course the Immortals probably did not fight in their palace robes but the nice action poses of the Vendels make an assault on the King's tent a possible skirmish game.

Now I must get some of the old cavalry done as they now match Casting Room in size.

Here is the standard bearer. The actual standard is made out of a Vendel Hoplite spear with a 1st Corps banner from their Command Chariot. The golden pomegranate is simply a bead borrowed from my wife's bead box. These old Vendels can be found on FaceBook at the Thistle & Rose Miniatures page.

Wow, that’s an inspiring unit of Immortals! So much colour and variation in patterns!

Excellent, and plenty for a skirmish game...

"The King of Kings wants a Duck dinner, the King of Kings is gonna get a Duck dinner!"
(Multi-player game, each having some Immortals, and some bases with Ducks on.
Other foods are available)
 lol lol lol

Those are great.  I need to paint some Persians soon, so I'll be copying some of those techniques.

Here is a sample line up of the Vendel Immortals side by side with Wargames Atlantic and Victrix plastic figures. The green Vendel Immortal seems smaller because of the leaning forward pose, and the plastic figures thick molded bases.

Would really like some " Hollywood " style Immortals like the ones in the original The 300 Spartans

They look cool.  Full of character and beautifully painted, as usual by Jjonas.     Made me get the catalogue of  Vendel minis from  T and R.

Attached here   FYI.

The range has a lot of cool overlooked Persian satrapal and mercenary troops. Some types like the Lykians are difficult to find in larger 28mm scale.

Nice figures. When you said old, I was expecting the Hinchliffe or Garrison immortals.
Those Vendel figures are good; I have some of their Macedonians

"Nice figures. When you said old, I was expecting the Hinchliffe or Garrison immortals."

Hah! Those are real ancient, the Vendels are merely 20 years old. My Oldest ancient Immortals are by Ral Partha from ca 1980-ish :)

The Ral Partha and Foundry Immortals are real gems. True 25mm and super detailed. Sadly I never painted more than one of them before the 28mm jump to scale creep kicked into high gear at the turn of the century. I still use my Minifig, RAFM, Ral Partha, Hinchliffe and Garrison figures as levies in massed units. These Immortals are a bit too unique to uses as mere levies. I wish they had re-mastered them up to 28mm, maybe that will happen someday with 3D scanning... because they have incredible detail and character. But I should force myself to paint at least a Baker's dozen of them as an exercise in "studies of antiquities."

Photo lifted from eBay where you can still get some of these classical figures.
