Anyone know how to make some 28mm alien bug type figures out of the kind of stuff you can buy at a craft shop?

Yeah, watch the earlier Bill Making Stuff videos that Tactalvanic linked too (good choice BTW - my first thought too!). They are very instructional, and the projects are easy to do. 8)

These "Final Conflict" bug aliens can be found at the dollar store.

I also use cheap bags of plastic ants when I need hordes of alien bugs.
They aren't particularly accurate sculpts, which helps with the "alien" nature, and of course, their huge. Got them off Amazon, 100 per bag.

Guess I will have to check the toy aisle!
-
Toys are definitely the way to go -
Giant Ants - THEM! http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/THEM/Report.htm (http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/THEM/Report.htm)
Spiders http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Mnsia_Biggles/Biggles01_Chap_2.htm (http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Mnsia_Biggles/Biggles01_Chap_2.htm)
Not to mention giant apes and dinosaurs http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Skull%20Island/Skull_Island_Intro.htm (http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Skull%20Island/Skull_Island_Intro.htm)
-
I imagine swapping some heads, arms, legs and whatnots around on some cheap plastic animals and dinos would help make them even more alien.
-
I'd echo the Final Faction aliens from dollar tree. You can get them online and the ones pictures above come in a 2 pack.
Also, it's not craft store, but Wargames Atlantic Harvesters are worth looking at for Aliens on a tight budget.
-
I live in South Africa so the final faction aliens wont work but I have been eyeing the harvesters.

In that case, I'd definitely go with the harvesters. More expensive than toy ants, but it's not a huge price bump for a massive bump in quality. 30 bugs per box in two sizes, 20 large, 10 small.

It depends on what game you're playing with them. As I said, I need hordes for one of mine.
And there's a lot to be said for figures you can toss down or pile up and not worry about paint jobs or anything.

For a more squad based "normal" application, the harvesters are a great deal, so long as you like the look of them and they fill your needs.
