I am relocating and wanted a small, lightweight, easy to store and carry army that I can travel with and play Midgard (upcoming rules written by James Morris), Dux Bellorum and Age of Penda with. Dan Mersey's Copplestone sculpted Wiglaf range recently made this fledgling idea impossible to resist. So here we are with the first models painted!
This is Edwin, son of Aelle: exiled prince of Deira in the service of Raedwald of the East Angles at the Battle of the River Idle in 616AD. Edwin commanded one of the three East Anglian divisions at the battle. I have given him a (LBM) Christian banner even though his conversion did not take place until around 627 because firstly it’s a cool banner and secondly because the army I’m painting will do double duty as that of Ecgfrith of Northumbria once Wiglaf release mounted Saxons!
First time painting anything smaller than 28mm since I was a teenager painting Airfix HO/OO models!! That’s a long time ago! I think they've turned out ok really!
Currently on the painting table and coming next: Edwin’s hearthguard…

Great work! Looking forward to seeing more :)
-
They're absolutely banging, Andy. I'd be over the moon if they were mine. That green and red colour scheme has worked especially well. And extra points for neatly painting quarters around the twiddly bits on the shields!
You can tell they're Northumbrians, too. The standard bearer is clearly Geoff from Byker Grove.* ;)
*Apologies to non-British folks for the obscure reference. Byker... was an early 1990s kid's series set in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
-
Very nice :)
-
Brilliant work Andy :-* :-* :-*
Great to see you back in the Dark ages mate :)
-
If that is your "okay" work your top notch work must be mind blowing! lol. That is exceptional for 15 mm miniatures - a range I am unfamiliar with.
-
Well done. They look great
Is the banner printed or painted?
-
Brilliant brushwork, very nice color palette. The more I see these beautifully painted Wiglaf miniatures, the more I am tempted by the range (even tho I game this period in 10mm already).
-
Superb work Andy and it's great to see someone using the flag toppers! Looking forward to seeing more as your army grows.
-
It's a Little Big Man banner from one of two 15mm Dark Ages sheets that they produce.

Here is the first Wiglaf Miniatures Hearthguard unit completed. These are a mix of models from the two armoured packs available - Armoured Saxons and Armoured Vendel warriors. I love the dynamic poses and they fit my vision of a 7th century Anglo-Saxon war band perfectly, with battle tactics evolving gradually from the slightly more open, individualised combat approach of the classic Migrations period raiding barbarian army into the shield wall combat of the Viking Wars and beyond. Thus, the mix of shield sizes and styles and setting the models up in a slightly more open order position on the unit base (i.e. no overlapping shields).
Unarmoured warriors and skirmishers on their way in the next week or so.

Very smart brushwork Andy :-* :-* :-*
-
Wow :o!
Those are really neatly painted. I’ll echo others. If this isn’t brilliant I’m lost for superlatives!!!
-
They look great and the shields are nice and vibrant.
-
Those are beautiful! The colours you chose worked really well.
-
Very nice!
-
These are fantastic. I really like the look of them on the larger bases too - it gives them a proper warband vibe. What size base have you gone for here? 80mm x 40mm? It works a treat.

Thank you - yeah, 80x40mm. It just gives that bit extra room on the base (which will be handy for cavalry too!) which suits my vision of early-mid 7th century warfare which in my mind is less about static shield walls and still a bit more about aggressive war band combat than in the later Saxon era (I feel that my warriors need a 'surging advance' look rather than a static overlapping shields look, even though I'm sure that a proto-shieldwall would have been used in more defensive actions...)
And the 80x40mm is playable across several rule sets and at least one other gamer I might face across the table has Wiglaf and Forged in Battle Dark Ages armies on 80x40s too! .

They look great :-*

brilliant.

Real life got in the way a bit lately and somewhat bizarrely, given that I'm painting Raedwald of East Anglia's army, I have just been appointed to a job at Sutton Hoo, Raedwald's supposed burial site! How immensely cool is that?!
Anyway, here are the skirmishers and warriors in the retinue of Edwin, exiled prince of Northumbria. The final two pictures show his retinue in total. The unarmored warrior unit is made from models from the Saxon warriors and Vendel warriors packs, as I like to mix them up!

Next up, the man himself! Raedwald's command base plus his hearthguard... Might be a while though as I'm in the throes of a house move!
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-*
And congrats on the new Job Andy 8)
-
Awesome stuff Andy. They look fantastic.
Good luck with your move to the desolate marshes of East Anglia. Very much looking forward to seeing more of your Wiglafs once you get settled at the other end.
-
Beautiful work! I like the vivid colours you used on the retinue figures and their contrast with the subdued ones on the skirmishers.
-
Oh my! Those look better than a lot of 28mm and even some 40mm!
