Title: Starting Frostgrave...New scenery P. 2
Post by: black hat miniatures on 17 April 2023, 01:27:56 PM
I know I am late to the party but I have just bought the Frostgrave rules and Perilous Dark / Breeding Pits.

I have a lot of unpainted Repaer Bones miniatures from too many kickstarters and I decided I really need to start doing something with them.  Initially I might use my Dungeon terrain (Ainsty tiles) to play a couple of games but I have also started 3d printing the Ulvheim files from Thingiverse to create a Frostgrave table.

First prints:

Reaper figure for scale.

Now I need to sort through the Bones figures and make up a couple of warbands and start painting...

The bones KS's will serve you well for both warbands and random encounters.  Glad that you joined the party.  The game is swingy but fun.  If you were local to us I would invite you to our local club for a go but methinks the distance is too far.

Sadly you are probably right about the distance, but many thanks for the offer.

I have rebased the very few Bones I have managed to paint so far:

A couple of wizards, stone golem construct, a knight and some other specialists probably.

I came across a white marble effect table cloth in B&M yesterday. I actually thought it might be useful for a Winter game.( Did think Frost Grave.) It was in two sizes ( never got to check as We were in the line for the till . But it did look sturdy enough for gaming.) They were £5,and £8 respectively.

Sounds interesting - I've decided to make 1' tiles so I can swap things around a little and ordered some XPS tiles from Firedragon Games.

Also ordered some bits of Amera terrain to produce some bigger pieces.

Printed off more UlvHeim pieces:

Test drybrushed and snowed up a small ruin piece.  Has come out okay, I think.

I’ve just started too as my youngest son expressed an unexpected interest. Scenery looks good. I’m using insulation foam ☹️. What did you use for snow effects? I’ve used baking soda previously.

I am using Galeria Acrylic Modelling Paste - bought a fairly large pot from Hobby Craft for £9.  It dries hard and can be sanded.

Also I have a large container of Woodland Scenics snow from an old project so I am using that mixed with PVA and water and then fresh snow sprinkled on that for basing and some snow effects.

I am trying to go for a few patches of melting snow look rathe than a deep blanket of white.

I found this temple in a box while looking for some other things.  I made it over 20 years ago for a Dinosaur Hunting participation game in Darkest Africa run at Valhalla...

I've sprayed it and snowed it up a little to use in Frostgrave.

If you want it to come off as more slushy mellting snow try mixing it with gloss medium instead of PVA.  With the WS snow it works a treat.

I bought some XPS foam tiles from Firedragon Games which are pressed with a flagstone pattern.  Good service and tiles are £2 each and will save hours of etching foam with a biro!

The tiles are 11" across (285mm) so I am using that for my tile size with the intention of making 9 tiles initially and then exapnding to 16 for a 4' x 4' (ish) table.

Here is a test painted tile:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghthJyJg6kGf8okn45fNbSefQHKpaPyrbCfUEbt9jf_rXDaIZWtsqh-LN3EbMF6d3MgnIlPq3qLA28reooD8aVjy2isIkW4dzzOU8TG6tLGp7NijOw7GK0wNH1CaDisH7Y62jRvqt87KtK1waH0yQ79eVFuvNBS6Ld4kjVqQWlPya-xpMtF4sPVy1UTw/s1046/Tiles1.jpg)

Which has been washed with Supershader Black and then drybrushed in various greys up to an almost white.  Really brings out the tiles quite nicely.

Also shown are repurposed LOTR Balin's Tomb scenery as scatter terrain which have been drybrushed lighter and had snow painted around them.

So, 8 more tiles to paint and 9 to stick to lasercut MDF tiles, then I can layout some terrain and see how much more I need to do.

Started to put together the board now.  This is just a 2 x 2 test board - more scenery to finish.

The board set up is looking good - plenty of places to hide, and with some elevated areas too.

I finally have enough terrain 3d printed to fill 3' x 3'.

If it stops raining I can get it undercoated and painted as well!

I finally finished off the scenery and played a game at the Guildford Club last night.

Kept things simple and pregenerated a couple of Warbands.  One and Elementalist and one an llusionist.  They each had 8 figures: Wizard, Apprentice, 3 thugs, a thief, Archer and then either a treasure hunter or a barbarian.  Played the standard 5 treasure markers on a 3 x 3 table.

The game was fun and I came very close to getting the third treasure off the board before my luck ran out and I lost my final soldier.  I only had my Wizard left in the end (the Treasure Hunter and Thief had made it off the table with treasures).

We are playing another 3 sided game in two weeks.

Nice having a game in, isn't it? 8)

I found it was really motivating to finally get up and build and paint what I had been hoarding for nearly a decade.

Once you get a regular group of players, try setting up a campaign of sorts; it really ups the ante, and makes for quite a different gaming experience, since you won't be throwing your warband members in front of a train that easily, as you'll likely be missing them next game, or even for the duration of the campaign!

It's also a good reason to expand the library of monstrosities; those random encounters are a huge part of the fun after all ;)

Your table is really taking shape already though; looks like the motivation is there in spades :)

Thanks - I have a load of Reaper Bones figures to finish for warbands and more than enough for the whole Frostgrave bestiary (and another kickstarter still to arrive!).

I am working on some taller tower buildings from the Frostguard set at the moment (printing the first piece as I type) and the Amera waterfall and river pieces to produce a frozen river setup....

Played a third game as the start of a campaign a couple of weeks ago and I've been working on some new scenery.
