Title: WAB Gallic Wars project
Post by: Seb on 15 May 2023, 12:25:35 PM
So, digging thru my pile of shame, I dig up this lot — a starting point for my Gaul army. My initial idea is to recreate the two sample armies from the WAB rulebook, the Romans and Gauls and use highly detailed historical source materials like Asterix & Obelix as the inspiration to recreate the battles of the Gallic Wars lol.

And if you think this is not a lot, and I will need more, don't worry. I got a pile of them.

Not sure what to do with Romans. Follow the historical accuracy and use the Marian Romans types, or do a full comic style Lorica segmentata lads. Time will show :D First, I need to paint the heaps of metal I already have at hand.

Cheers,
Seb

Keep ‘em coming Seb.
We need more ‘Wabbers’

You could do both.  It would allow you different tactics and opponents.

Of course you could also build a Punic Wars Roman army, too.

Thanks, it is a project I have always wanted to do, since the first time I read the WAB rules, many, many moons ago :D

Punic Wars... well... I do have a pile of 15mm minis I was planning to use to build a pair of armies :D

WOW, almost two years later and I still

I dusted off my project recently. And start reworking the minis. I was not very happy with the "washes". It seems I can get my head around getting them working for me. So, I decided to go a more traditional way, but with limiting the amount of layers to a minimum. We will see how it will go this time.

I do admit that I'm very pleased with how this lad came out. Looks good

Well done - you're getting a very bright color.  Washes have their time and place, but they don't need to cover the whole figure.

Thanks!

It may be the case of the lightning in the pictures. It was a quick snap. I'm still experimenting with colours, and this first batch is about that.
I have something like 60 of them to paint, so I think I can spare some for experiments :D

I hope to get a few more done this week.

Cheers,
Seb

like the concept  of     "highly detailed historical source materials like Asterix & Obelix as the inspiration" .

I don't recognize the models.  Who makes them ?

They look like Black Tree?

Aye, they are Black Tree. I have a pile of them, and some Romans in breaches (somewhere, I believe lol).

It's a bit of a bummer, as they don't mix well with Wargames Foundry or similar. The BTD designs are a bit taller. That said, I believe the Foundry Steve Saleh Romans may fit them. I'm planning to get a pack or two to see. But first, I need to find out those Romans.

Well, with more than 60 models to paint, one needs some form of venting :D

Loving the subtle skin tones on the Gallic Warrior. Looking forward to seeing more.

Foundry have at least two ranges of Gallic types. The ones they call Continental Celts are the older, smaller ones that are more Punic Wars style. The later ones for Caesar’s wars are called just Gauls and were sculpted by Copplestone/ Rob Baker. These are pretty chunky and would work okay with the BTD figures.

Thanks bluewillow.

Thanks! It's a bit warmer than in reality due to the camera :)

I didn't know that! I will check it out. I'm sure I'm covered with Gallic warriors, but it's always good to have more options to choose from. Plus, I will need to look for some cavalry at some point.

A bit of progress after the weekend. Not anything ground-breaking, but I think I'm finishing my "experiment" phase :D. Or so I think I am.

The ultra shiny lad on the left is the latest test model. I gave him treatment with the Army Painter Strong Tone dip (the one in the can). I used it before on some 20mm stuff and it worked well for me.

I needed a short break from the Gauls, especially since I needed to dig up more of them to finish the first unit. But I'm still more or less on track.

In the meantime, I'm planning to finish the first unit of Romans—however, they have some strong competition from some of the recently acquired Perry's naps :D.
According to the sample roster in the original WAB rulebook, I will need only 10 Auxilia, but a few extra will not hurt.

Let's see how that will go.
