Title: Turnip28 project of Freddy
Post by: Freddy on 02 June 2023, 11:44:50 PM
So I started a Turnip28 project too, because, like many of us, I also do not have enough projects. I really like the rural decay-feel of the Turnip world, I always wanted to do something in this style, now it is my time. The first step in this would be a starter standard ,,army", 2-2 units of Fodder and Chaff and the necessary 3 characters.
(I found an other T28 thread in the postapo section. While technically postapo, it is not really the zombies&miniguns stlye one would expect from that genre, to me it feels more like fantasy, thats why I sterted the thread here)

While Turnip28 originally supposed to be a bitz box cleaner, I quickly gave up fooling myself and started sculpting bitz for the Fodder. 3 bodies, 3 helmets, 3 backpacks...

...the musket hand is the same for everyone, it comes from my 1848 Hungarian project

which will be a great bitz donor for T28 in general. The bayonet broke during form making, does not matter now.

The casting came back:

Now I am assembling and green stuffing the soldiers (the shoulder joints need some green stuff, also some casting errors)

They won't have proper command, only a banner in each squad. A GW Dark Elf banner I guess. Yay freehands!

The Chaff are made from Zulu war British, some alibi bitzbox cleaning here :)  This is the pre-greenstuff state.

The characters are completely out of the bitzbox, 1848 Hungarians with head swaps and some WHF Empire pistols.

That's it for now, to be continued.

Thank you, guys! I am also looking forward to see them painted, I do not want to do towards the usual black based scheme, I will use yellow and green. But, of course, lot of mud and rust.

Looking forward to seeing yours painted.
It is ongoing now, waiting for the oils to dry.

Meanwhile, some new sculpts. Brute, artilleryman and a new head.

I don't know the rules, but I don't think I've ever seen T28 artillery.

At heart, it is a well thought-out Napoleonic skirmish game, much more on the game than on the simulation side. Armies can be built on two levels, on basic level you got 8 of the the basic Napoleonic units: commander (Toff), sub-commander (Toadie), heavy and light cavalry, 3 types of infantry (Fodder is line, Chaff is skirmishing light infantry, and there is an elite one), and yes, one cannon unit. If you do not take the options for some units to up/downgrade for medieval equipment, you can play wyswysg T28 games with your Napoleonic army.
On Tier 2 the madness starts, here the base army is the same, but you can choose one of the so called Cults to it. Each Cult adds some extra unit options and/or crazy special rules, this is where it all goes to fantasy. And some Cults have extra artillery units too. (There is a ,,basic army" cult too to those Napoleonic purists :) )

No, the resin copies are just for me, not intended for production. I you saw how well the parts fit, you would curse me anyways :)

Blessed be the rootlings they look great, are you going to make a walking veggie patch of onions carrots potatoes and bulbs?

Is there a root flower cult in turnip, like daffodils or tulips?

Not an entire garden :) They come in units of 4, and I made 2 units of them:

The official fluff concentrates on vegetables, but there is one Cult, the Red Ribbon Society with a gardening theme: you can place little gardeners onto terrain pieces and they grow Tuft Tokens on it which you can use as bonuses for your army (This is the type of weird rules ideas that make T28 so great). These tuft tokens you can model as any gardening stuff, from simple sowed plot to fancy vegetables, or flowers too if you like.

One of the coolest cults is the Fungivorous Herd- the bonus unit here is a herd of livestock (mostly pigs) which are completely mad and multiply when they reach terrain. The game is to scare them towards the enemy while going through terrain and growing into a proper stampede :)
Two little root pigs for them:

Sure, the goal is to have a properly painted unit. But these are the master pieces for casting, I will paint the resin copies.

No way, that's a silly fun minigame inside a larger battle plan.  lol

The root piggies look great.

Is this based off the artwork in the rule book? I think the one on the snob stats page? Looks great either way, really nice recreation if so :-*

A little progress.
A new head:

Some Fodder:

Thank you! I really like this zombie sculpt of mine, I made  several extra casts for conversions like this.

Meanwhile, the new Fodders were painted.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCgimvF81ORNITUb-D6A0Ld0CCKQ81SbEOdcA6XLdi85FAiTvq93bvJ44oNYJ2OXOpLa5N9MgWudeLwjSgM86YZrlQ71CuPnAEA1ziD0HNvCcReXOO4K83yyeN3dZupWvlSpkk4AQZ5NeZrJ2TN_tQNzaSMC2OmFErrFmpXN36ERjWZlIQYKX4a3cU0SQ/w787-h509/Turnip28_Fodder6.JPG)

They were not intended to form their own unit, but to form a third Fodder unit by mixing them into the other two (these units are held together by the colour of their backpack blanket).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHjIFYx-dhdpNEIspxLzAmepmEipMD43qDb8FAkjVSGGZ8CxZUBD8e3lpC-5f3MqBytrgQW9ijk5hsNdEQI-Y48GoIJ1rfOBeEB3EHi93t_mGc6oZOSgiNanXYFZL6uYK9PfNz0Z45C0Emwjz5r4IWOC8WOKTJwe2hDbr-A6lIXcMgSSuZhOGAexGcdHc/w1012-h499/Turnip28_Fodder12.JPG)

The standard. I really like painting these.

Thank you! The only problem with the standard bearer is that he is too big for a 20mm base- so I have to place him on the corner where there are no more models on its right side.

I am absolutely agog at your skills, both as a modeller and a painter, plus the idea of having an army so unique fills me with pleasure.

I've been dabbling in adding greenstuff to existing bits but am inspired to try some sculpting from scratch.

Great stuff! Again I love the bruised purplish skin, and the glossy effect looks great as well.

Thank you, guys! There is no brake on the turnip train, by the time I build a model, they came up with two more crazy units :)

Thank you!
For every model I complete, I start 2 more and have ideas for 5 more. The wargamers curse :) I have a buddy who does that with veteran cars, so everything is relative :)

That's a great sculpt, love it.

I'm in the too many projects club at the moment and Turnip28 lost out. I should take Snitcythedog's advice and stop looking around.
