Title: Trotter Watch Cash and Curry: Conclusion
Post by: Spinal Tap on 19 June 2023, 06:37:40 PM
Brief Introduction.

Zona Britaniya was my Lockdown project and the first postings I ever made on LAF, here's the introduction:

Zona Britaniya

In February 1988 the assassination of Mikhail Gorbachev and most of the Soviet Government was accomplished in less than 48 hours, leaving the USSR in turmoil and the world more fearful of Global Nuclear War than the 1960’s.

The coup was orchestrated by a massive and secret organised criminal network headed by the elusive Nestor Lebedev, known as The Swan.

Lebedev quickly took control of state press and television, promoting himself the saviour of the Soviet Union and protector of the teachings of Lenin and Marx.

Irrespective of his true political leanings, he embarked on a foreign policy of aggression and invasion across Asia; the US reeled at the speed at which this happened and made empty threats of war.

Throughout 1988 The Swan ignored them and pressed on.

On December 1st 1988 he turned his military machine against the US’s NATO allies and they could ignore his aggressive policies no more.

Initially the limited nuclear strikes were against military and strategic sites but quickly escalated to tit for tat nuclear devastation of cities in Russia, Europe and the United States.

The world was quickly heading for global devastation

Then, on Christmas Day, the Soviets launched a massive attack on the United Kingdom, at the same time warning the US that they were prepared to unleash every missile they had unless a deal was agreed.

The example made of Britain stopped the world in its tracks and tentative moves towards a peaceful resolution ensued.

Mutually assured destruction had been avoided.

Britain lost 65% of it’s population in the initial strikes and a further 28% in the 6 months following from radiation poisoning and disease.

Parliament, the government machine, Royalty, the rich and the powerful, who had remained safe in their bunkers, abandoned those they purported to serve and fled to nations relatively unaffected.

Within a few years the population of Britain was less than 300,000 and the whole country designated a no go area.

The country fell back to the dark ages, albeit with some modern technology, and it’s inhabitants had to learn a new set of skills in order to survive.

The mean Summer temperature now hovers a few degrees below freezing; in Winter it falls to 30 degrees below.

A new Ice Age is underway.

Most lived underground. At first. Then people started to go missing. Which was bad.

When they started to return it was worse.

What came next was unimaginable.

The US call it Area Zero; the Soviets designation is Zona Britaniya.

After 2 adventures using the original Zona Alfa rules and solo mods both official and otherwise, Trotter Watch headed for a well-deserved retirement.

After living the high life for 2 years they are now skint and hungry for work and I have had a copy of the proper solo rules, Kontraband, sat unread on my shelves for long enough.

Today part of the crew consisting of Delboy, Rodney, Cassandra and Boycie headed back to their former base on the old ship locked in the ice to clear the area of hostiles and reclaim their own.

This gave me a chance to reacquaint myself with the base rules and start to become familiar with those peculiar to Kontraband.

Here's a few pics from todays first run:

Title: Re: Trotter Watch Cash and Curry Part 1: Radio Times
Post by: Spinal Tap on 29 June 2023, 07:59:49 PM
So "Cash and Curry" will be loosely based on the Zone Ravens 5 part mission found in the Kontraband expansion, tweaked to fit my world and the crew.

Kontraband works around solo rules where wounds are not only potentially lethal but also reduce efficiency and ability as the characters are weakened. There's also a requirement to live off the land and the 4 man crew will need to find the following every day of the mission: 2 Rations, 2 Water, 1 Ammo and 1 Lithium battery - failures to find any of these will see certain abilities reduced.

There's lots more to the solo expansion than this, I reckon anyone who liked Zona Alfa will love the solo rules. I ended up playing for over 3 hours trying to get the rules right, although there are a few that I missed.

Those 3 hours flew by.

In order to start with the recommended skills mix Del selected Himself, Rodders, Trig and Marlene with the others heading off for adventures which will be reported on at a later date.

Del wants this run into the Zone to go by the numbers, no heroics, no cockups.

In order to give the best chance of success there's a lot to be done in the outer reaches of their target area.

They need to clear all POI's of hostiles, gather enough resources and expend 2 actions to repair the communications equipment in the APC.

“Cash and Curry”

Soon after resettling their home base Trotter Watch are approached by a shady figure, Mr Ram, who offers them a great price for a dozen Artefacts – significantly more than they are really worth; he’ll even accept items that have lost their properties.

Delboy is a little suspicious, but a business acquaintance has confirmed Ram is genuine and Marek has given his blessing, subject to his 10% cut of course.

Raquel, Boycie, Cassie and Denzil are away on a job so this one is down to him, Rodney, Trigger and Marlene, who’s got a new Flamethrower to play with.

He tells of a smuggler’s ship, The Lovely Jubbly, frozen along a fault line, Artifacts galore, and he knows (roughly) where to find it.

Part One: Radio Times

Delboy is keen to maintain communications throughout the search for the ship and knows of an old military station which contained an APC with comms. The rumour is that it stopped working a few months back after a Thatcher attack but it needs very little to get it up and running again.

His plan is to move in, clear the area and minimise the risk of it going down again.

As they’re going to be in the Zone for a few days they will need to resupply whilst in there; as a minimum they’ll need ammo supplies, rations, water and some batteries to keep the equipment functioning.

Mission parameters for this first day are to clear the area of all hostiles (check all 9 Points Of Interest)), Repair the radio in the APC, collect 2 rations, 2 water, 1 Ammo and 1 Lithium Battery.

Mission reports are, as before, broken into 10 minute segments.

First 10 minutes – Rodney and Marlene go on Alert (Over Watch) whilst Delboy moves to a nearby Point of Interest (POI) where he finds a damaged container requiring a repair to access. After passing his skill check and opening the box he finds it’s loaded with ammunition which he gratefully slips into his backpack.

Trigger spots a container a little further into the Zone; it’s not only the next nearest POI but a great place for him to set up to snipe the rest of the field. He rushes forward but, on arrival, finds it’s booby trapped – bugger.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53004758107_c47dfd8785_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKReVM)20230627_131646 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKReVM) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Trigger passes his reaction roll and moves back very carefully to behind a barrier – he’s really not keen on having a go at defusing that.

Rodney discards his alert status and uses his single action to move up near Del whilst Marlene also spends her only action to toss a bolt towards the anomaly closest to the team. The bolt accelerates as it approaches the item and finally sticks to it – a gravity anomaly; that could prove painful to anyone caught in it’s field.

20 Minutes in – No Zone Event occurs.

Marlene moves towards the gravity anomaly, passes her interaction check, searches it and finds a bracelet like artifact which she takes before moving away to safety.

Trigger moves to the disabled Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), finding that not only does it contain the radio equipment they need to repair but is also covered in Spitters and Spores – nasty.

He reacts quickly enough to hold his breath and not get affected then proceeds to search the APC – 2 Rations.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005920618_e6ddb4b414_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKXcv5)20230627_141246 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKXcv5) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Delboy uses 2 actions to move to the booby trapped container and makes a successful attempt at defusing it. Rodney joins Del and searches it, finding a sealed bottle of water.

30 Minutes – No Zone Event.

Rodney makes a second search (Scrounger) and locates a Med Kit then presses forward to a pile of strange looking containers. As he approaches them his Geiger Counter screams – he fails to react quickly enough and is forced to rely on his stamina to get through, taking a pin. Searching reveals a Detector and an unused Lithium battery.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005820015_617a95905b_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKWFAx)20230627_141259 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKWFAx) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Marlene uses 2 actions to move to the APC, passes a reaction roll to avoid the spores, uses her stamina dice to allow her to repair the radio equipment and takes a pin. Her final action is to move away.

Trigger starts to move away from the spore ridden APC but manages to suck in a number of spores causing 1 wound and reducing his overall effectiveness. He climbs onto the roof of the nearby hut to provide a field of cover to his colleagues.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005665059_9f8ee5a227_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKVTwT)20230627_144932 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKVTwT) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Del moves into the compound and prepares to do his stuff.

40 Minutes from insertion – Still no Zone Event.

Rodney attempts to move away from the radioactive containers, doing so by passing his reaction check and sprinting towards the large red container at the rear of the compound, shrugging off his pinned status as he does so.

Marlene rallies to remove her pin then goes onto Alert as Del moves to the centrally placed POI, finding more Spores and Spitters which he reacts to successfully, moving out of harms way towards the South Western corner of the compound, tossing a bolt at an Anomaly – a Blaster – could be painful.

Trigger drops from the roof of the hut and enters, ready to unleash hell but all he finds is a Witches Brew, a drum of caustic gunge (‘what sort of gunge?’ he imagines Denzil saying). He fails his reaction check and suffers a point of armour damage then staggers back outside.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005690499_8cf02a2039_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKW26v)20230627_150322 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKW26v) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Looks like Marlene went on Alert for nothing as both boys only found environmental hazards.

50 Minutes – No Zone Event – again.

Rodney moves to the red container and discovers it’s occupied – by Uncle Albert!! He lets Rodney know what the nearest 2 unsearched POI’s contain; one is The Hum and the other is Thatchers.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005951660_f3cdc213f9_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKXmJh)20230627_152356 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKXmJh) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

That’s all 9 POI’s identified so mission nearly accomplished except for clearing out the Thatchers.

The crew know they need to get a move on as the chances of a potentially disastrous Zone Event so choose to ignore searching The Hum and Del heads for the Thatcher’s location while Marlene goes on Alert again.

As he arrives the Thatcher’s erupt from the trailer and launch towards Marlene who uses her flamethrower to devastating effect, frying them both instantly.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005582081_6a42f3dd56_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKVsSe)20230627_153112 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKVsSe) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Delboy throws caution to the wind, rolls all three stamina dice and gets three more actions, finding 2 Rations on the cart, tossing a bolt at the anomaly that is in view near the trailer and finds it’s another gravity anomaly.

Trigger starts towards the Gravity Anomaly in the compound, reacts to avoid being pulled in and smashed against it, reaches into the strange effect and pulls out a strange disc which allows those equipped to ignore pins but has negative effects to boot.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53005032717_242fd7c39f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oKSDyr)20230627_154627 (https://flic.kr/p/2oKSDyr) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

On the Hour – Del decides to push their luck just that little bit further and again there’s No Zone Event.

Delboy rallies, moves to the Blast Anomaly and is thrust backwards, taking a Pin, Marlene also tries and suffers the same. Trigger and Rodney are too far away to be of use and Del makes the call to get out of there.

The final tally is all objectives completed with a Detector, a Med Kit, 4 Rations, 2 Water, 1 Ammo and 1 Lithium Battery found as well as 2 Artefacts.

Got really lucky with no Zone Events and mainly environmental hazards rather than hostiles and, in retrospect, it might have been wise to stick around to get the last artefact but hey ho.

I can see the British contingent need an old tv program to recruit their teams from. I've always wondered about buying the Dad's Army figures, they might be perfect for this game set in the 40's.

I'd seen your snow board as I've been rooting through older posts and thought how nice it was. Pleased you're continuing with Trotter Watch, and I'll enjoy your future exploits.

It's also a nice idea to use the time to denote turns, much more effective than turn 1 turn 2 as I did.
Cheers

June the 29th was the last day I played a game.

Until today.

To qualify, that's a solo game; I have played 3 games of Frostgrave against a friend as part of my way back, with some pleasure but mainly to force myself into doing stuff again.

I have set this game of Zona Britaniya up half a dozen times, started twice but never got to the end of it, just too morose to bother.

Playing this game, enjoying it, and posting on here is quite a milestone for me - hope you enjoy it too.

Part Two: The Frog’s Legacy

Marlene heard rumours that an old time stalker, Freddie the Frog, had a map of all the trails through the zone, many only known to him.

Unfortunately, Freddie had been killed last year and buried in the abandoned shanty village he had been exploring.

The Team decide to go to the village, find Freddie’s grave and recover the map; it could be vital to their mission and safe return.

Insertion – The Team insert at the South-East corner and survey the locations. Alongside the evenly spaced points of interest (POI) are 3 randomly placed graves and 3 randomly placed anomalies. Whilst the 3 anomalies are quite close, 2 of the graves are at the other side of the field. Given that the crew need so many artifacts to satisfy Mr Ram and they also may have 3 graves to search it seems sensible to keep the searches of POI’s at an absolute minimum.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53282212464_23729c6c23_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbngrA)20231024_102756 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbngrA) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

First 10 minutes – Delboy sprints towards the nearest anomaly but becomes pinned briefly as the terror of approaching it overwhelms him. He finally steels himself and approaches the site with caution discovering a Gravity anomaly, fails his will roll and is pushed back but takes no damage.

Rodney and Trigger go on overwatch as Marlene moves to a POI finding a Witches Brew, reacting quickly to not be splashed and burned, searches the area and rolls a 6, discovering ammunition and a lithium battery; coupled with the food remaining from the previous scenario the team now only need 2 canisters of water to continue unhindered.

Finally, she moves closer to Delboy as Rodney and Trigger abandon overwatch and use their remaining turn to move forwards.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53282327675_d5ca25919c_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbnRFZ)20231024_110547 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbnRFZ) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

20 minutes – Delboy moves back into contact with the anomaly, survives the damage attack unscathed and searches, finding a Bubble artifact. On trying to leave he finds that the gravity has an overwhelmingly strong hold on him.

Trigger and Rodney again go on overwatch as Marlene moves to the next POI which turns out to be a drum leaking gas. She passes her check and searches but fails to find anything.

Trigger and Rodney again come off overwatch and move towards Marlene – that’s 2 sets of actions wasted for environmental hazards.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53281857826_a50ac2f8be_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbks29)20231024_104946 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbks29) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

30 minutes from insertion – The Team notice a strange shimmering on the horizon; it’s a Zone Event – a violent emission which will cause some serious damage if the team aren’t in cover at the end of their actions.

Marlene moves away from the container to allow Rodney access, he’s much better at searching than her and finds 2 cans of water at first whilst his second search reveals an ammo cache.

Both of them retreat to a nearby shack for cover.
Trigger follows them to the shack, calling for Del to hurry up.

Delboy finally manages to escape the gravity of the anomaly but needs to rely on his stamina to reach safety – losing 2 of his stamina dice in the attempt.

The emission blasts over the area. None of the team are harmed but all suffer shock and gain a pin.

40 minutes – No Zone Event this turn.

Delboy moves to the next anomaly close to an abandoned truck. This has a terror rating of 3 but Del passes the challenge easily. He continues to move forward to contact the anomaly, discovering it is a Force (Blaster) anomaly.

Delboy fails to react quickly enough and is blasted backwards suffering 1 wound and also taking a pin. He uses his next turn to remove the pin marker and moves away to a nearby grave with the power of his stamina.

Rodney moves to the anomaly, also passes his terror check and then reacts quickly enough to avoid being blasted back. He searches the anomaly and discovers a Sponge anomaly before retreating.

Trigger and Marlene both leave cover moving nearer to the graves in the West and the final anomaly.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53281857821_025a4283b6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbks24)20231024_113244 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbks24) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

50 minutes in – Luckily there is no sign of any approaching Zone Event so Delboy concentrates on searching the grave, finding it is not the grave of Freddie the Frog. He then moves back towards the rest of his crew.

Marlene approaches the final anomaly finding yet another gravity well, she avoids being injured and then searches, finding a bracelet. Using all her stamina dice she can move a fair distance away.

Trigger moves to the grave nearest him and searches but this one isn’t the right one either.

Rodney moves to the final grave, searches and finds the map; he also finds a note, on top of the site, sealed in a waterproof container.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53281047907_dc2e89541b_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbgig2)20231024_115725 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbgig2) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

On the Hour – Another Zone Emission is due at the end of this turn. Delboy assesses the stash and current supplies, and is happy that they need to continue unhindered as well as all 3 anomalies.

He gives the order to withdraw to safety.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53281047902_18be35db49_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pbgifW)20231024_121032 (https://flic.kr/p/2pbgifW) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

Finally reaching safe cover they all pore over the map, before reading the note found on the grave which details the manner of Freddie’s rather horrific death.

Shaking his head Rodney comments ‘ Freddie the Frog. Killed himself by sitting on someone else’s satchel charge. What a plonker!’

Great to see Trotter Watch back in action. Hopefully we won't have such a long wait until the next installment!

Always a joy to read your battle reports. Sorry to hear you have been feeling morose. I hope you continue to find yourself in the Zone! ☢️

I like the tension the "40 minutes in" and such builds. It's like you know you've stuck around too long, but are willing to search for just a little more loot...  lol

Thank you for the comments,  it's great to be gaming again and I think the events of the past few months are well behind me.

Tactalvanic - my intention is to play Kontraband one week and Frostgrave the next so I can devote some time to the building and painting  I want to do.

Mike - Kontraband rules are great for tension and I added this way of thinking to make it feel more so.

Kontraband is fairly crunchy for me but I've made a crib sheet which helps a lot.

Totally agree.  8)

Great to see Trotter Watch back centre stage, obviously I'm a bit late but thoroughly enjoyed catching up. scenery is good, I'm a big fan of the paper builds although I bet it's cold inside a tin shed in the snow.  lol lol
I know what you mean about solo games, you need some impetus to get going, hopefully you feel re-invigorated, and I'm looking forward to the next outing of the Trotters.

A timely post as I'm playing the next scenario this afternoon, a bit later than planned but I have changed use on a bedroom to make a games room  - nothing flash but I'm looking forward to playing in it.

Part Three: Little Problems

‘This bloody map doesn’t match the terrain at all, so glad we spent yesterday digging through graves to find it!!’

It seems that events in the zone have resulted in existing paths being obliterated and new ones forming; the crew need to confirm their location as soon as possible.

Comparing the map to the scene in front of him Del reckons they are at a stalker camp indicated in the central left portion of the handwritten map. In order to confirm they need to circle the camp, check on a few outlying locations and not disturb the residents.

However, as they approach it’s apparent that a number of strange anomalies have seemingly crashed in to the site and the camp has been abandoned.

‘Listen up’ says Delboy, ‘we have plenty of supplies but it won’t hurt for us to be head of the game. There looks to be plenty of stuff we need down there and we can check out these new anomaly types as well’.

The team need to insert, investigate the perimeter of the camp (4 corner POI’s as a minimum), check out an anomaly or two, then get the hell out of Dodge.

The crew drop in at the South East corner of the area and are immediately confronted by a pile of cases and lockers.

As the rest of the team go on overwatch, Delboy moves tentatively towards the pile intent on searching for loot.

Overwatch was ore like overkill as Delboy found some spitter plants which erupted with spores as he approached. He reacted quickly and, despite a little wooziness, did not succumb to the effects of the spores.

Searching the containers he found rations and water, then moved West with the remainder of Trotter Watch following with their remaining moves.

10 Minutes

No Zone Event expected.

Del moves forward towards the anomaly, overcomes his terror (rating 1), and tosses a bolt in it’s direction which vanishes then reappears 20 metres to the North; a spatial displacement effect!

He reacts quickly and moves to the South of the anomaly than indicates for Marlene to approach and search for artifacts.

Marlene approaches, despite her fear, avoids the displacement effects with a timely dive onto her belly then searches to discover a Spring artifact.

Trigger and Rodney pass Del and Marlene, heading for the next POI.

20 minutes

No Zone Event.

‘Come on, let’s get a move on. I don’t want to be here beyond the hour. I have a very bad feeling about this place’ says Del. ( I decided to put in a 60 minute time limit with a Zone Event happening automatically after this point with no roll required).

Marlene safely moves away from the anomaly, using her Deja Vu to do so, into cover then goes on overwatch as do Rodney and Trigger.

Delboy ‘Hustles’ towards the POI, drops to his knees to search and finds a booby trap -great.

Quickly he assesses the device and sets to work disarming it. Once completed he calls on Rodney to come in a search the items for anything of value.

As the remainder of the crew slowly prepare to move to the North East corner to further confirm their location Rodney does as asked.

30 Minutes

No approaching Zone Event detected.

Rodney searches and finds rations, water and 2 medkits – scrounging is a useful skill!

Rodney lets Delboy know what he’s found, Del responds with huge grin. He decides that given the good state of their supplies it would be worthwhile to do the necessary and get out of here – that bad feeling was still with him.

All the crew move out, ignoring 2 POI’s, a tent bursting with supplies and a loaded truck, as they move towards the 2 anomalies and a Northerly POI.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53348689596_b8fedc0f16_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pheYM3)20231122_135611 (https://flic.kr/p/2pheYM3) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

40 minutes

No Zone Event again.

Delboy approaches an anomaly, using all his Deja Vu dice to pass the level 2 terror check before tossing a bolt at the anomaly.

The bolt sparks with electricity before being welded to the side of the vast structure – an Arc Welder anomaly!

He indicates that he will attend to this anomaly and the next and signals for the rest of Trotter Watch to advance on the POI which they dutifully do.

50 minutes

No Zone Event.

Del is getting really jumpy, this is taking much longer than he likes.

He moves into contact with the electricity anomaly but fails to react quickly enough and takes a wound. He pushes on, finding another Spring artifact, then moves towards the last of the three anomalies on the field.

This one also has a terror rating of 2, Delboy overcomes his fears and prepares to move into it.

Marlene and Trigger provide cover for Rodney to explore the POI, another booby trap, which he successfully deactivates.

60 Minutes

As the hour approaches a crashing sound can be heard to the North (automatic Zone Event which sounds like some huge beast).

‘I knew this was going to turn to shit’ thinks Del.

Rodney’s search reveals just a single lithium battery, then he moves on towards a tent in the North West which needs to be investigated before they can get off the field.

Using all his Stamina dice he rushes to within a few yards of it before pulling up winded (1 pin token taken).

Del uses a medkit to treat his wound, contacts the remaining anomaly without a bolt toss and manages to avoid the blast that it emits on his arrival.

His search locates a Sponge anomaly which he thrusts in his pack.

Trigger and Marlene estimate that whatever is approaching is going to pop out not far from the pinned Rodney so use Stamina and Deja Vu dice rolls to ensure they are in position for it’s appearance.

70 minutes

As a huge Alpha Mutant rushes in from the North, another Zone Event is set to approach the area in the next few minutes (Anomaly Shift).

Rodney drops his pin, turns and unloads his shotgun at the mutant hitting it twice.

The hardened carapace of the enormous creature deflects the shots but leave it stunned.

Delboy moves in, opens up with his AK47 and manages to inflict 2 wounds.

Using his stamina he pushes on towards Rodney, ending up just short of the tent which is the final POI.

Trigger fires 3 times but only hits once, this hot bouncing way but stunning the Alpha a little more.
Marlene shakes her head, mumbles ‘ Bloody men’ under her breath, opens up with her flame thrower and incinerates the mutant.

80 minutes

The anomalies all shift position, but this is no concern to the crew now, and a further such Zone Event is indicated to be imminent.

Rodney reloads and goes on overwatch as do Marlene and Trigger.

Delboy approaches the tent at which point the ground erupts with three pairs of Thatchers appearing as if from nowhere.

Delboy reacts, killing one, while Rodney disposes of another.

Marlene’s flamethrower kills 2 more and Trigger attempts a difficult shot on another but misses.

The remaining pair of Thatchers attack Del inflicting 2 wounds on him.

90 Minutes

The anomalies shift again and there’s further noise from the North – looks like the Alpha Mutant wasn’t alone.

Trigger kills both remaining Thatchers whilst Rodney searches the tent, finding adrenaline and 2 armour repair kits – what a haul.

At this point the crew deem a job well done and make haste to be elsewhere when the next Alpha Mutant appears.

‘All in all a good job but we need to move quicker next time’ says Del.

Sorry in not getting back quicker.

The trees are made from pipe cleaners twisted together then melted with fire, got the idea from this bloke:

Slow going this past 6 weeks as life got in the way - good things but quite time/space intensive so had no chance for solo gaming.

Part Four: The Chance of a Lunchtime

DELBOY:

We made it.

I can see the old mine from the satellite photo; a cluster of drab, saggy buildings propped against a rinsed blue sky. They’re three, maybe four kilometres away. It’d be an easy stroll except the air above the fields between here and there quivers and crackles with energy.

This place is seething with Anomalies.

There’s a pile of old shipping containers in the middle of it all too. I tried Pike’s binoculars but the distortion made it impossible to focus.

I saw movement though – lots of things slithering or scuttling in and out of the open doors. Made my skin crawl.

Turning around I saw Marlene checking out an old Hazmat suit, ‘it’s good’ she says ‘ but it’s only got about 8% use left in it’s filters. Enough to run for about an hour, maybe less’.

I can live with that. It's 12.30 now so we should be able to commence a search by 13.00hrs and be ready for some grub by 14.00hrs.

Insertion

The team move forwards and prepares to enter the area in the South-West corner.

The rest of the team go on overwatch whilst Del moves to the nearby POI, finding a locker that’s damaged and hard to open. He breaks the lock then signals for Rodney to come and search it whilst he moves to the next point.

Rodney moves up to the locker whilst Trigger and Marlene move forward.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53468494174_7a7ce1ab2d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2psQ1vd)20240116_143903 (https://flic.kr/p/2psQ1vd) by markndebs (https://www.flickr.com/photos/41874623@N00/), on Flickr

10 Minutes

Trigger goes on overwatch as Del Hustles to the next POI, a pile of useful looking junk but infested with the yellow acid spitting plants that seem common in this part of the zone. Del’s reaction are quick enough to dodge the spray as Trigger positions himself to cover both Marlene and Del.

Rodney searches the container and surrounding rubble finding some old but usable ration, a container of murky water and a sealed lithium battery – great start.

Marlene hurries to an anomaly she spotted but freezes with terror as she approaches.

20 minutes

Delboy avoids more acid sprays, searches the pile and discovers a satchel of ammunition, grabbing it with glee before moving to another likely spot to find loot.

His rush means that no-one has had an opportunity to cover him and as he arrives a group of Grubbers emerge from the containers and proceed to surround him.

His reaction kills the nearest but there are still four to contend with, three attack him and two are despatched but one remains in the fight.

The remaining Grubber slithers to Trigger who kills it disdainfully with his knife before climbing atop a hut. He settles down, takes aim and kills the Grubber that was threatening Del.

Marlene approaches and searches the anomaly, finding a spring artifact, before using her stamina to run to the next one. This inspires no fear in her and she gets close.

Rodney uses his time to move forward once more.

The anomalies seem to quiver and the air around them crackles with static.

‘It looks like their going to shift’ shouts Marlene ‘ let’s get them while their hot’.

30 minutes

With no time to waste Delboy heads towards one of the anomalies, suffers no terror on approach and finds this one exerting massive gravitational forces. They pull him in but he suffers no damage and uses his time to grab the bubble artefact then is forced to sit tight, hoping that when the anomaly dissipates it doesn’t take him with it.

Marlene approaches her anomaly, avoids it’s effects, grabs the heart artefact at it’s core and moves away a safe distance.

Rodney tosses a bolt at a POI and it’s erupts with a puke yellow gas – probably best to leave alone if the needed supplies can be found elsewhere.

Trigger moves towards Rodney, tosses a bolt at a pile of junk under the tower and the pile collapses, exposing a body carrying a large rucksack – definitely worth a search for the needed food and water.

40 Minutes

The anomalies vibrate more, disappear then reappear moments later; thankfully Delboy manages to leap clear as the last moment and survives unscathed.

Unfortunately two of the appear right next to the body and loot Trigger had earmarked, making it really difficult to approach – bugger.

Marlene and Trigger go on overwatch to cover Del’s approach to another POI. This turns out to be a booby trap, exploding before Del can react, causing him a wound (thank god for military grade body armour) and destroying the loot.

Marlene comes off overwatch and uses her final action to toss a bolt at a POI initiating an angry buzz. Fearing some kind of unknown beast she is then relieved to see a mound of crystals are producing the sound.

‘It’s The Hum’ she shouts, ‘we’ll have to be careful’.

‘Sod that’ says Rod. ‘We need to get out of here asap, I have a bad feeling about this place’. He moves up to the POI, becomes a little nauseous then pulls himself together.

Using his scrounger ability he finds rations, water and adrenaline then uses all his stamina to move away to safety with Trigger following.
A loud roaring sound erupts to the East. It sounds as if some terrific beast, or maybe more than one, is approaching the settlement.

45 Minutes

Delboy and Marlene look at each other and move to follow Rodney and Trigger.

Muttering to himself Delboy says ‘45 minutes in and out, got all the supplies we need and only have to find one more artefact – Cushty’.

Really enjoyed this game although I did get very lucky in pretty much every encounter. Might consider making the final scenario even harder than written to see how that goes.

Delboy checks their stash of artefacts and counts 11, just 1 short.

‘OK. Looks like a cracking spot to get Mr Ram’s last anomaly. We don’t need no heroes this deep in the zone and I really don’t like the sound of what’s coming.’

He looks to the North East and spots what he’s been looking for as another series of roars are heard across the area.

‘I radioed Sunglasses Ron and he’s driving in as close as he can get, ETA 20 minutes. Let’s move North, check out the anomalies and maybe pick up a few goodies on the way’.

Insertion

Trotter Watch move as a single unit partway across the field but it’s slower going than usual with their packs full of loot.

10 Minutes

The howling of what is definitely two creatures is reaching a crescendo; it’s obvious that they will be here in minutes (failed Zone Event check).

Marlene approaches the nearest anomaly, fails her terror check but is hard enough to ignore her fear, moving into contact with it.

As she reaches the thing a huge pressure wave erupts outwards; luckily the rest are far enough away to avoid injury and Marlene reacts quick enough to remain unhurt and in contact with it.

She makes a quick search and discovers a Bubble artifact – bingo, they have everything they came for.

Rodney indicates towards a pile of junk which looks interesting and Delboy nods.

Rodney moves in, climbs onto the difficult terrain and finds a locked equipment box.

Using stamina he opens the container and searches it thoroughly using his scrounger ability, finding Kevlar plate, binoculars and a disposable multi-tool.

His efforts leave him fatigued and he takes a pin.

Delboy and Trigger advance to Marlene’s position and Del uses orders to allow Rodney to remove the pin.

20 Minutes

2 huge mutated creatures, one of a kind never seen before, appear and rush towards the party, uncomfortably close to the TW crew who are forced to move towards the extraction point in the North East.

As they run towards safety they hear the roar of an engine and spot their van screeching to a halt near the fence.

The alpha mutants continue to advance and Del makes the decision to not engage.

‘RUN’

30 Minutes

All four crew members dash as fast as possible towards Ron and the van, throwing their packs and themselves into the trailer.

As they accelerate away the alpha’s arrive and indicate their displease with screams and roars.

Lucky exit.

The Following Day

Returning to their base they are greeted by the rest of the team who had returned from a failed extraction attempt, being battered, bruised and skint.

‘Lucky we’ve got the 12 artifacts Mr Ram wanted, we’ll be quids in later’ says Rodney.

As darkness descended Del and Rodney meet Mr Ram and make the exchanges; Ram’s men loading their truck whilst Del counts up the credits.

Once the transaction was complete the boys turned to leave.

‘One more thing Mr Totter’ says Ram, ‘I think I’ll take my money too’.

With this a multitude of armed figures appear, surrounding the two TW members, and it’s obvious they are outgunned and outnumbered.

Sullenly they hand over the case of credits and watch miserably as Ram’s men disable the van then disappear into the distance.

‘We are going to have to sell everything we own just to keep our heads above water, Rodney’ says Delboy. ‘And I thought he was such as genuine man’.

Rodney gazes into the distance at the disappearing trucks then looks back at Del.

‘You berk’.

‘Never mind Rodney’ Del says ‘we will just have to get back to work’.

‘This time next year we’ll be millionaires’.

A very short game as there's no way the crew would have survived those two mutants in close combat, but really fun all the same.

Looking at the Point of Interest cards it's probably lucky that we didn't explore more as they were pretty much all Zone Hostiles.

Great report and another good looking table. I like your added plot twist at the end to ensure Trotter Watch have to return to the Zone (broke).

Looking forward to more adventures in the future.

I have followed this outstanding and inspiring campaign.  Really excellent (5 stars) and in keeping with "Fools and Horses".

The twist at the end was different to what I expected and all the better for that.

Series 2, please.

Great report.  At least TW has the hides intact.  I would imagine it's back into the Zone they go.... ;)

Excellent, I  thoroughly enjoyed the last 2 games ans went back to the begining to re-read all of the reports. Thanks for posting this series. Hopefully there will be more to come in the desolation that is your modern Btitain. The snowy wasteland makes your games stand out remarkably well.

Going back I spent a little more time looking at the scenery you've used to good effect.  I've got most, if not all of the print files you've used but I've not made the nissan/Quoinset huts, it looked particularly effective in your setting.
Did you just hit the small gas containers with a rock to crush them? I have a couple of these and wondered how to use them, your idea is effective, stops them rolling round.  ;)

While I like the concept of Zona Alfa I've not been very impressed with the clarity of the rule book, and because of that I never looked at Kontraband but reading this makes me think it might be worth the effort, do you have any thoughts on that?

Anyway, hope to see Dell Boy back in action soon.

Thank you for the comments guys, Trotter Watch will return once they've done some smaller jobs and re-equipped.

@ Vagabond

I've rarely played against others so wasn't concerned with the lack of clarity some sections had in the original book.

Kontraband is much better and I have a crib sheet for every action with a page reference for the rulebooks which helps enormously.

My passion for the game is predominantly based on two things, the randomness of what you'll find at Points of Interest and the problem solving required in ensuring the best suited PC is in a position to attempt the task - the fact that this isn't always possible as their other skills may be needed elsewhere keeps me interested.

I would say that any failings in the system are unimportant to me as I only solo this game; PvP we tend to use Fistful of Lead as my regular gaming friend loves the system.

Regarding the gas cannisters they are pretty much as I found them on the side of the road, run over by numerous cars and rusty - I reckon flattening them with a hammer then allowing them to rust outside would b the best bet.

I usually play with one or two others and any difficulties with the rules are unimportant as we work around them.  I usually set the games up and so "run" the opposition, supply the figures, terrain and all the cards etc.  In the cards and crib sheets I reference the rule book pages.
If something isn't covered I create rules or adjust existing ones.  In fact, when I got "Kontraband" I found that many of our adjustments were very close to the new rules.
I suggest playing the original "Zona Alfa" rules a few times - the scenarios in the book are an excellent starter - before you use "Kontraband".
The time limit enhances the game putting a real pressure on the players.

Where are your stalkers from?  I’ve been using the Stargrave Scavengers.

Where are your stalkers from?  I’ve been using the Stargrave Scavengers.

They're all kitbashes from Star Saga miniatures, Wargames Atlantic and Bolt Action Germans with various heads/backpacks.

Details of them and lots of the other stuff I build as my lockdown project are in this old thread:

Mine are from Foundry Street Violence, Hasslefree (from when they could be trusted), Warlord Project Z (survivors and weapons), Bolt Action (Russian and German heads and parts), various Frostgrave bodies modernised with Bolt Action and other weapons, Copplestone scavengers and anything that fits.  I use kitbashes mostly now.
Vehicles are mainly old toys and terrain from junk.

I bought some of those polythene Centurions several years ago on ebay from China, converted them into Scifi and post apoc vehicles.  Cannot find them now.  I have looked on ebay where I got the last lot but cannot find them.

Where did you get yours?
