Hi all I’m looking to tap into the collective wisdom here , I’m painting a sarmatian Army , I see a lot of brilliant minis all painted in either iron or bronze , but I’m constantly reading that the sarmatians utilised horn scale armour leading to my question , what colour would this be , thanks in advance for your help

Greenish grey.

Greenish grey.
Depending on the colour of the horse could also be a yellowish brown.
-
It could also be lacquered of course, so red, blue, black, green and others all possible, as well as any combination/pattern

info@senhousemuseum.co.uk I went here many years ago. They had a reproduction scale horn/hoof armour.Might have a picture if you contact them ?

I have seen a horn armour reproduction set at a horse archery reenactment event in Hungary, brown black was the dominant colour and white cream was used highlight to make patterns. All of the horn was polished and it looked fabulous

I have a vague memory of reading somewhere hoofhorn armour was lacquered (not sure what with though...). As most hoof horn is dark I would go with grey; lacquering would make it almost black.

I read somewhere that the term "greenhorn" was applied to apprentice horn workers who didn't apply heat properly to their material and the horn came out green.
