So, no photos just yet but perhaps soon. I've been collecting a bunch of 15 mm Stone Age stuff, people, animals, and some tents/huts to run games set in the time of the Megafauna. Had most of the stuff for a bit but recently, through a 3D printing 'oops', I now have some over large vultures - closer to 25/28 mm than 15 mm. My 3D guy made it right today with some birds closer to 15 mm, still large but that was at my request for easier painting and table visibility - the smaller ones will be for Africa and the Old West.
My plan is to use the very oversized birds as megafauna (some I may paint and sell, got quite a few) - even if not yet supported by evidence (or is it?). Since it is a fictional setting loosely based on what we know about the time period - not that much really - it will just be for adding to the fun.
I continue to hunt for 'civilian' Stone Age 15 mm figures, knappers, berry pickers, unarmed women, old men, children, etc. Not really needed but I'd add them if I could find them. And prefer in proper attire rather than fur bikinis - though hot babes in bikinis don't bother me (sorry ladies, just truth! :o. Sexuality, not sexism - more power to you.)
So, why tribe on tribe rather than hunts? Well, I just think that will be more interesting - and I can still include hunting the animals within the game.
Rules will almost certainly be Fistful of Lead, maybe Bigger Battles version - love to hear from others using these rules for Stone Age games, especially tribe versus tribe, and see any animal tables you've developed.
I believe I now have 36 figures each for my various tribes and I think I may have crossed to a couple of hundred total animals - but that is counting things like Highland Hairy cattle and camels and such, not all megafauna.
Does seem that Stone Age gaming is a niche within a niche within a niche in the wargaming world but still fun.
And...
Can use it for a bit of Lost World gaming with my Pulp game stuff in development. Skipping dinosaurs! Why? Millions of intervening years without humans or megafauna. Movies might be fun - love Ray Harryhausen stop motion work - but too out there for me. Pre-history okay but flights of fancy, not so much for personal tastes. Wait, Lost World is sort of silly, isn't it? Well, fun is too - or can be. Fun wins. ;)
[15 mm bird tally - 6 in trees with wings folded + 6 trees 'empty', 11 vultures with wings spread for the ground, 11 vultures with wings spread for perching in trees or on rocks, and 10 vultures with wings folded on the ground. that's 38 total birds. not so many of the larger birds, maybe 24 if memory serves - picked up about a month ago]
-
After posting, just had to go sort out what I have so here is the list:
15 Mammoths - various sources
48 Highland hairy cattle
5 Musk ox
6 Hairy camels
18 Wooly rhinos - various sources
6 Terror Birds
3 Cave bears
27 Wild boar
12 Auroch cattle
3 Giant Eagles
6 Wolves
6 Giant Weasels
9 Sabre tooth cats - various sources
24 Large vultures
So, actually 188 animals - but with some additional items to be ordered from MY Miniatures (with a hope they can be painted to look okay), more musk ox, large sloths, large armadillos, and giant crocs (waterline) [also some more waterline hippos and crocs but for Africa games - and some 'snake women' for who knows what]. The 24 animals for Stone Age would bring total to 212.
People -
12 'riders' I'll likely use as dead 'cavemen'
9 bone carrying apes (2001 Space Odyssey sort of figures) - not sure how they'll be used if at all
Four villages with each village having 21 warrior men and 3 warrior women, a 3 man Firestarter group, and 9 women, children, and old men to be modified to cave men (Bluemoon figures to be converted - maybe just with a paint job but maybe add longer hair and fur), so 36 per village. Each village also has a set of 6 dogs.
2 men with a dog (sort of an expanded Alpha setup?)
2 groups of 3 men + 2 extra men (convert to dead maybe or something else)
2 3 man Mighty Leader groupings (for when two villages ally together?)
That all adds up to just over 400 pieces to paint which, for me, is a reasonable painting load, a month or two to paint with diligent effort. Plus the structures, of course. And jungles in process that might get used. Snow and ice (glaciers) might dominate and those would need building.
One last thought, probably base the figures in groups of 3 to keep it all more reasonable. Or, should I keep it all on individual bases for this?
-
Regarding basing, you could go with the 1-2-3 system to cut down the number of things to move, but keep some flexibility.
-
Pattus Magnus,
Yes, the 3-2-1 basing might be an option.
--
On the animal front, not quite matching, but I can bring in my already painted herd of American Bison (buffalo) for another species. Already have 120 and another 14 to create as dead though the latter need modification and painting. Painted for my Old West set up.
-
The bison should be suitable for Neolithic games, they are a bit different shape than European bison, but in 15mm scale it will be easy to ignore that.
-
For my 15mm indian pony war, i used the Atlantic Buffalo set (small 20 mm matching very well with 15mm world).

Fear not. Vultures can be quite large.
-
Fantastic project. I also have a large collection of unpainted that I need to categorize.

Sorting out how to build a glacier (see Workbench) and decided to order a few more mammoths for some conversion work and including one encased in the glacier. So numbers above will be needing some adjusting once all received.
-
Decided to cancel the MY Miniatures order, a bit arcane ordering process - though he certainly has some unique stuff. I did find sufficiently similar items through a few other sources that will get me where I want to go: Irregular Miniatures Tusk range, some animals from Splintered Light Miniatures, and some 10 mm items from Magister Militum. I will use those as 'pygmy' Megafauna if necessary. Who knows, there might just have been such things? I have a dim recollection that what is thought to be an ancestral mammal that might be one of our extremely distant ancestors existed in the dinosaur age and it was very tiny. (Some of MM stuff not 10 mm and not all for Stone Age)
-
Two of three orders for this project in transit, maybe part of the third order, too. All, or nearly all, of the animals bases are prepared as of yesterday. And the 15 mammoths on hand all got their tusks glued in place as well, used two part epoxy to improve long term strength since they are 15 mm. Will need another tusk session once one of the orders arrives.
Still debating how I will base the humans and their dogs (each tribe gets a pack of 6 dogs). Probably do 3 to a base but - maybe - based individually.
Seeing the tusks glued in place means that ice encased mammoth is going to present some challenges - but I'm still going to tackle it.
-
After a bit of an issue with my cell phone that needed a reset, I now have a photo to share as I work on this project.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG4Oop-JE1NP_UbXiLJL4P8Tq6G3jNleU4SvQZN-Ahw4FhqoPfYY9HLGRpz7eI76BsSvGGhiSdb7Daj0y7m1zNr7k0zCTo9vD4znKDj74w8rYhQkSEFmAf1eSRIAlrpXOswLn_WaPAdaU3T4lnmItrhw84-AA_zryHXJSu1N9OYjU8wNBYZsNEILbaQw/w640-h480/IMG_1935.jpg)
That is my mammoth herd - but without the items inbound from Irregular Miniatures, another nine animals, six adult and three young. Six of those will add to the three family herds as seen in the photo and the other three will be one encased in a glacier, one dead and ready for butchering, and one much modified as a mammoth stuck in pit trap (inspired by item seen here on LAF).
The left most animals are from Khurasan and the next I believe were from Acheson (might no longer be available), and the others I'm not sure (if you recognize their source be sure and let us all know). Of course, in 15 mm. [Upon reflection, I think several of the mammoths are from Acheson - but I'm not certain.]
Some gaps to fill and some additional prep work still to go but one step along the way - they are all washed and all have their separate tusks two-part epoxied in place.

And some musk ox, a bit small but workable for me:

Not all of the items in the linked post are for this project - but most could be adapted.
Note that Magister Militum included a notice to get orders in by September 26, 2023 before sold or maybe closing down.
-
Who sells the mammoth skeletons, Magister Militum also?
Thanks
Dan
-
Dan,
The mammoth skeletons are from Magister Militum. All of the figures - except the caveman - that I posted and linked to yesterday are from Magister Militum and all "10 mm" figures.
Oh, I probably won't order more. It's not that I wouldn't enjoy having them it's just hard to justify having more though not really about the money. Only so much time to paint and SO MANY figures still to go.

Greg
Excellent. Thanks so much!

My Irregular Miniatures order arrived today and at first I was a bit disappointed at the three piece larger mammoth (the baby is a single casting). Then I realized the three pieces (left and right body and head with a 'post' to fit into the body) will make creating a dead mammoth and one in a pit a lot easier and may also give some options for showing the glacier captured beast being a bit malformed during the freezing process. Sorry, no photos at the moment.
Added six new figures to each of my four tribes, 14 stands at 3 figures each means 42 - plus 3 'dead' figures. Everything already received washed and additional needed bases prepped. I think when I have those last items mentioned below, I will be a bit over 200 total animals.
Just waiting on a few items from Splintered Light, one item on back order, and I am going to call the collection complete.
-
And now, having received my Splintered Light Order, I am calling the collection 'complete'. Ordered and received one pack of dire hyenas - which will be used as cave hyenas since the dire were extinct half a million years ago, two packs of dire wolves, and one pack of cave bears, a total of 21 more animals. No photos just yet but the figures can be seen here: http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/15anandcr.html (http://www.splinteredlightminis.com/15anandcr.html).
Once these last figures are washed and the last bases prepared, then it will just be a matter of filing the figures and glueing to bases and then painting away once I clear that other project off the table.
-
“Now I’m calling my collection complete”
I’ve said that too many times to know there’s never such a thing as a complete collection of minis. :)

Only a year later and I'm back working on this project. Needed a few additional bases prepared and decided I wanted the bottom of all my Stone Age bases to be 'stone' gray so I just finished painting all the bases a gray primer. A lot of bases!
Next step is to prep and paint figures. A lot of figures! What makes it so many are all the animals I've accumulated.
Also recently acquired some blue glass bits from a craft store for making my glacier - with at least one mammoth caught inside. Would be nice to find a complimentary appropriate green glass to go with the blue.
Did decide the 'adapted' Stone Age figures, mostly African villagers from Bluemoon, will just get a dry brush effect rather than try to create animal skin effect on them. Will see how it goes.
I did buy a board game at a deep discount last week called Tusk that has some cool ideas to adapt. Flint knappers and berry pickers, a large part of the reason for the 'adapted' figures. Majority of each Tribe is actual cave man (or woman) figures, four tribes, and a few Special Event stands of figures. And some 'out there' bits just for fun.
Most of the bases - eighteen more drying for the wolves in three wolf packs:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLnZvZZrwQESlhhaCCBj6e-Ebz_QPFhI7OEbM1OHydogobXYa3lx3xVZrOsrd_B0BdcxeAbPtILMDhkug5y9BLADucK6PClOm6EN3W0UDzu8k7bHKE2fRU1Zx3USSKoXpxNOuVxqerL9iP8mtIj5vr-HHfFB5Tt8SdbGk_SNrOeKkMysgzSOuRDshBmxw/w480-h640/IMG_8593.jpg)
The three skeletal mammoths after - carefully - removing from their bases. "Surgery" with a Dremel tool with leather glove (metal gets hot) and wore a full face shield - safety first, always!
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQKP9j0edl2V0ycrAN0V021RGbiDWCyrgjv1sD4MBMgfHfJ8ZXoFUvkGKw7tjn1YMWQcCwN0KMafEOHHhyphenhyphenhJXVUmasKnKf6x5s_ALS559hn-zTOMJ68He9W4npgT_Xl5By6kL9ZjQXuFVZkxholdCs9bFC0xoFnyFQcOWOkUbmrRqxtkaEGq3g48i3g24/w640-h480/IMG_8596.jpg)
Here they are lying flat - but not quite flat enough:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiftSEna_xIjRX9OhsaHScEnPdoZP3Z6ZsdQSdkv9WGlSt8jyEbifV5rmeomQoBr87Rp5vPocr9QhJ7x_N0n_AneZr93fVzFOrtDqu_4h_7TBLgNazmCSwF8fsfjfEdEFth3JKZnkO8-3eaPV02nKpVI8qIutVHCUJNqGEASgcS_2KfLaC00jTgpmuwvsk/w640-h480/IMG_8597.jpg)
And after getting pounded on with a sledge hammer - one direction worked better than the other to 'flatten' the skeletons. Dead animals, not animated skeletons for my purposes. Hopefully you can see the difference:

The three components from Irregular to assemble into a single animal:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS0hTD02D2M1cCzWUyixd6iBtaTOZnbDRT2fKSqPqPKH1MFIvkq0MDXDUaWvhvVT7KiDJMcsgoGUXC_CjezsXw5RZT7zbep61ug9RjNVDlWeBHh1rDj5r7Q_ya1oTwFWN7n3wP1pxol2FBbUGO5tk_q0OjU_XrtdbQfMdzmXzUez2dCIh-MAh-sYHccYw/w480-h640/IMG_8599.jpg)
A side by side of a propped together 'normal' animal and another one that had its legs chopped off with the Dremel. Note that I made sure to keep the feet, mammoth steaks anyone? The chopped animal will be modeled inside a pit trap, maybe with a sharp stake or two sticking out of its body, a bit gruesome but...:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHxLkbmlL_juS14VxhvZElrucocup938qYNXUCTkItPi8K7HZGKJ0OOg_TgqfRrgpIZr3Oj40EpTmlLXDMcbd2ucvsptoQ1_NYtxjuff_DUCgda6JhFD9Y_mWLYpze51AN2c3kl2noORod1ilsdt2rnwL_YNhgU4nnaSfk7hySehsMnegbiwxxyC4d75Y/w480-h640/IMG_8600.jpg)
And in a moment of inspiration, I've decide to use the three parts inside a glacier to create two animals got together and consoling one another as they freeze to death inside the ice - just have to be careful to hide that the rear body has no head. But getting two for the price of one!:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3XOFeAzxq9dFi0Txg76_aDH4dBRv__XjtoH2VCn7VXwdqlDel3RQbksJVBPuJCnC0glTsbiDKE6B5g3iwPABCvLyfJZ8yW0CW12_qtK4xBCcJLlI1nyiJPVaNNWIfUcZAj4oG3SOyj4MSfo3aluD4wePpu-__o70_ao9IpYLMROLb3aQBolVQF2ARlac/w480-h640/IMG_8602.jpg)
That's it for the moment. Next step will be two-part epoxy to assemble the last few mammoths and then drilling holes in the one in the pit and the one that has been hunted to insert spears sticking out.
-
For my bases I used ready made basing scatter (Geek Gaming Scenics) and bought enough to fill a decent sized tub. Saves worrying that the bases will look different part way through the build as I've been caught before where named material has altered over the years of a project.
As for ice / snow - the best I've found is the Woodland Scenics snow with a little white glitter added in. One error I made was to use wood glue and not PVA - the one I had dried yellow and a had lots of figures to rebase!
Edit: Did you see this article on hunting (even if it's not your main aim it's still worth a quick read):
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-did-ice-age-humans-kill-huge-animals-like-mammoths-probably-not-by-throwing-spears-study-finds-180984958/ (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/how-did-ice-age-humans-kill-huge-animals-like-mammoths-probably-not-by-throwing-spears-study-finds-180984958/)

Good advice Andrew - fortunately I have laid in a good supply of my two primary basing materials - Woodland Scenics Earth Blend blended turf, looks a lot better than the green 'golf course' effect, and children's playground sand which came in 50 pound bag, been using it for many years and still have plenty left! Still debating how I will texture my Stone Age bases, probably a custom mix of both of the above and some 'gravel' bits. For that I will need to make sure I have plenty on hand before I start. Having everything based to a standard just makes a collection look so much better.
Tried to read the linked article and got the gist of it but got disgusted with the pop up ads coming up so fast and gave up. The planted pike idea is curious - not sure how supported it is by evidence, perhaps in the part I didn't read.
-
No evidence just speculation, lots and lots of it.
Mark Twain said it best:"There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact."
-
Just FYI, currently sitting on back burner as I push forward to complete FFL figures and get a strong advance on AWI figures ahead of the 250th anniversaries starting up next year. So many periods to move forward! But all lots of fun. Perhaps some progress before end of year but certainly next year.
-
Hope to see it. I was looking at 'Tribal' as a ruleset to use for the stone age but I do like your collection of fauna and megafauna.
