Please take the Great Wargaming Survey and help us all find out more about...us! www.greatwargamingsurvey.com!
-
Done :)
-
Thankee!
-
Would love to, but cant fill in gaming styles and timeframes as checkboxes don't work for me ( mozilla on a Windows 11 machine)
-
You should just be able to tap the lines. I'll have a try on a Windows computer now!
-
Also done.
-
Yep, just tried on a Windows computer. Just tapping (or dragging, if you need to rank them with the four dots at the right) works just fine.

Oh no, another year gone.... sigh. On the way there to fill it in.
-
I'm afraid I'm not in charge of time. :?
-
The survey usually almost exactly coincides with my birthday, so the sense of passing of time is emphasised!
I'm afraid I'm not in charge of time. :?
Maybe not, but this has become an annual event, something I look forward to - then there's the publication of the results of the survey too :D
-
Happy almost exact birthday then!
-
Done. I look forward to seeing the final results for the year.
-
"How many painted figures do you have in your collection?"
That's a nasty question! lol
-
That one, or the one that has "un" somewhere in that sentence? :D
-
"How many painted figures do you have in your collection?"
That's a nasty question! lol
There's the truth and there's what I tell the Mrs. ;)
-
Happy almost exact birthday then!
Thank you! That was yesterday. :D
-
Done
-
now done
-
Glad to hear it worked!
-
Done.
Looking forward to the results in due time.
-
Done.
How many unpainted miniatures do I have? Not so many that I can't justify the next purchase.
What are my buying habits? The only miniature purchase that I regret is the one that I didn't make.
-
We all know that's what we all think as well. But a survey where a 100% answers a question the same way isn't that interesting. ;)
-
Done, however I don’t identify as a man, I am one…
-
Done, however I don’t identify as a man, I am one…
Err .... you just identified as a man.
-
Completed lt. :D
-
Err .... you just identified as a man.
No, I am one...
-
I think therefore, I am.
I really enjoyed the number of minis in your pile of shame question. It felt so good to answer that as 0 or very few! lol
-
HOW? :o
-
Let's keep it on topic please :)
-
Is there a projection for when we will see the results?
Also, is there a link where I can see the 2022 results? I think I missed them that time around.
-
We always gather the results at https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/blogs/great-wargaming-survey-blog-wss-magazine
Analyses come out through the year. It depends on when people have time to work on it. We do have a tentative plan to do something else in September, but that's early days yet.
-
Done. Interesting to ponder how the wording of the questions change each year - but I find it really difficult with ones limiting you to only three answers, and even more tricky to put them in order of importance.
It has also had the (not unexpected) side-effect of making me seriously think about what I got up to over the last year - which I tried to stop doing when I realised how profligate and directionless my hobby effort has been.
Distracted myself my by looking for 'unnecessary' things I could purchase to make it worse...
-
Not many existing questions have changed. We try not to, only tweak things if improvements are suggested or suggest themselves. The reason for the limited ranking I explained on the podcast (I think, maybe I'm imagining things). This seems better than forcing everyone to rate 20-ish options. Granted, limiting to 3 is a random number, but I'm sure people would've said 5 is equally problematic.
I could add a question next year: has the survey suggested new eras or directions to explore that you just went and bought stuff for? ;)
-
I like the 3 limit as then I actually have to prioritize and think about it.
-
Mine's done. Looking forward to the results...
-
Thanks!
-
I could add a question next year: has the survey suggested new eras or directions to explore that you just went and bought stuff for? ;)
Please! I think an investigation into the effect and extent of the Ooh Shiny syndrome would be very interesting.
From personal experience, I can see its tentacles throughout my activities and most of my survey answers...
-
Okay, let's explore this. How do you take it beyond 'what inspires you' (already in the survey)?
-
Seems to me that that questions covers it, Praefectusclassis.
"Ooh, shiny!," for me at least, would be covered by inspiration from magazines/ websites/ shops/ friends. "See it, want it, buy it!" to plagiarise a current security mantra :-)
-
Done.
It would interest me in future years to have a question on boardgaming wargaming, just to get a measure of what proportion of the reply base own and / or play military based boardgames as well.
For my part, I regularly play a boardgame and then take an interesting piece of the action to the tabletop as a sort of ready made scenario to work through.
I know there are gamers that use their figures on the Commands and Colors boardgame system (hex based board).
-
We've often had the suggestion to include other forms of wargaming and have, at times, included questions along those lines. Realistically, I think we can only ask about tabletop miniature wargames experience of their hobby. If we'd stretch the survey to all kinds, or even just board, wargaming, things would become a lot more complicated. We'd have to figure out how to reach those hobbyists, and the survey would become a lot more complex as we'd have to include or exclude entire sections that are only relevant if you paint minis or stick stickers.
But perhaps I'm wrong. It might be interesting to team up with the editors of a board wargaming magazine?
-
Hi thanks, though I wasn’t suggesting reaching out to another audience, rather, how many of the figures audience i.e. the participants you already reach out to, also play board Wargames as well as their figure tabletop games.
It would just be mining a bit deeper or wider (!) into the sample group.
I’m guessing that might be one way traffic, as we are not also asking the ‘strictly’ boardgame community whether they also play figures and I am not a statistician, so I know that I likely can’t see the pitfalls that await what may be a skewed response :-)
Thanks anyway, there is more than enough good stuff going on in the survey in any case.
-
We did address it, to a degree, several years ago. Unfortunately it seems that the internet gremlins have swallowed the image...

Done. It prompted some serious self reflection.
-
I've completed it.
The magazine itself it pretty much non-existent in Ireland on shelves though so I never buy it any more, as its far too costly to order magazines direct from the UK.
I do find this survey to be very 'catch all' with the answers though. I personally never think its give a fair reflection of who I am as a hobbyist. For instant 'wahammer 40k' is clearly meaning the current 10th edition and the games that go alongside it. I still love Epic 40k from 1997, but I've zero interest in the current edition. But it kind of feels like I have to be bundled into the current market stats for 'warhammer players'. When really I don't view myself as a warhammer player at all.
I did find it strange that they are listing 13.5mm as "Epic" scale, as I've always known epic scale to be 6mm due to GWs old games. I know warlords are branding their new historicals as Epic, but I thought they were 10-12mm. 13.5mm is such an odd size to have been included. Perhaps its popular in areas of the hobby I've not noticed much! lol
The inspiration section was a tad....odd. Like there was no option for audiobooks/novels in the first question but then audiobooks got its own reply in the next question.
The unpainted-painted mini question had me do some serious self-reflection. It made me realise I need to really pick up the pace (or even start painting again) on my Lord of the Rings mega project. I stupidly sorted my entire collection out this year and bundled all my LotR stuff into storage tubs, then brought a new display unit for the painted stuff. The questions here made me realise that I have a very bad balance! :o
-
Thanks for the extensive feedback - that's always very much appreciated. Taking your comments in order:
- I checked with our distributor. It's indeed a small number in Ireland. I can certainly ask for an increase in distribution in your area if that's of interest. Of course, the best deal is always a subscription. ;-)
- I get it. The available choices are always and necessarily limited by our own limitations and by a need to keep the options somewhat limited. In the specific case of Warhammer: we try to avoid naming specific brands, but that's the elephant in the room. Would splitting it out into an elephant herd be helpful?
- I've been told the Warlord epic scale is indeed markedly bigger than the usual 10-12mm, but the available number of scales and sizes is perhaps getting a bit big. I've made a note to reconsider that next year.
- I'll also look at the inspiration section. Noted!
- Unpainted minis is a new, and possibly cruel and unusual question. I found it confrontational myself as well. I suspect the outcome may be encouraging to manufacturers...
-
Done it.
-
Thinking about the unpainted figures section, a choice of ‘don’t know’ ‘unwilling to answer’ might be a good option to have.
Mainly because I haven’t got a clue lol
-
Yeah, I hear you about the Warhammer 40,000 Mallo.
I think I put that as my 3rd choice, because I play a lot of games set in that universe, but I never play 40K and rarely buy anything from GW! Most of the games aren't even GW but I use their universe as the backdrop, sometimes with and sometimes without their models. However, I haven't really bought anything from them since Blood Bowl 2016 and a single KT21 team.
So it ended up 3rd on my list, but I never really give them any money. I wasn't exactly sure how to square that, but 1 answer out of hundreds won't break anything.
-
I’ve made a note to rephrase the various GW options in the Era/Settings question to make it clear we’re after the 40K Universe, not a particular game or edition.
-
The Warlord epic stuff is just confusing. The reuse of the epic name compared with the earlier GW 6mm Sci fi ranges. And the fact that they have created a new scale that just doesn’t scale with any existing ranges - the closest it seems to be to is some of the old 15mm ranges.
-
I've completed it.
The magazine itself it pretty much non-existent in Ireland on shelves though so I never buy it any more, as its far too costly to order magazines direct from the UK.
Then buy the digital subscription. Along with my SoA subscription, my best value Wargames purchase for the year. WSS Digital is brilliant value (and no, I don't get paid to say that!)
-
There’s a thought. ;)
-
Done (and shared on An Argader forum).
Some questions are very UK-centred (or should I say UK+NL+? centred) as the questions about buying figures at events etc. which do not really apply to France and probably to many other countries where not many figure companies or retailers come, and if they came they would not make much profit. But OTOH not many gamers in France etc. are able or willing to read (and subscribe to) a whole magazine in English.
-
Completed the survey a week ago.
I too am looking forward to the results.
As to the possible Board-gaming question, why not ask, 'Do you also play Board-games?'
That would at least give you an indication of some 'cross over' ;)
-
True, a simple enough question. Noted!
Here's another report with some comparisons of 2021 and 2022: https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/blogs/great-wargaming-survey-blog-wss-magazine/gws-2022-the-best-part-of-wargaming
