For a period of time, I have been toying with the idea of wargaming bush wars, in Rhodesia and South Africa.
I looked into 28mm and 20mm.
I opted for 20mm, convincing myself I could use die cast vehicle’s that were readily available.
I could use HO scale buildings.
I could buy and use 1/72 scale plastic aircraft models.
I was then inspired by Ash’s thread on this site (wow, there is some great work on that).
So, where to begin ?
Here’s my first play at making shantytown shacks.
I bought mdf buildings off the Internet.
Not bad at £5 for 3 off, so I bought a couple of sets.
I wasn’t happy with the roofs, so got hold of some corrugated plastic sheeting.
After posting images of the final shacks on FB, a great comment came back, that tyres and rocks were used to hold down the corrugated sheets, so they were duly added.
First try at a shack.

First shack with walled painted.
(https://i.postimg.cc/5y1yTkHY/IMG-4340.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/R6svndL4)
After this first shack, I started making the roofs a little more untidy.
(https://i.postimg.cc/zvjvrSWd/IMG-4342.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/D4SnQGxs)
Half way there with the group of 6.
(https://i.postimg.cc/8CyDHLjL/IMG-4339.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/sBZtfQP2)
Individual shacks coming along.

(https://i.postimg.cc/cCpbhLRR/IMG-4402.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/tnzkCymJ)
So, at this stage I thought I was finished, before the comment about adding the rocks and tyres on the roofs.
(https://i.postimg.cc/wxnqZ5FV/IMG-4400.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XXc6yCRG)
Plastic tyres incoming.
(https://i.postimg.cc/dVjJhbFH/IMG-4403.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZWnGgDCp)
Finally tries and rocks added to the rooftops.
One finished shanty town, for now.

Brilliant stuff, the tyres really add to the overall look.
-
Thanks, I agree. Really brings them to life.
-
Flat-packed, nice. Can you tell me the manufacturer /seller of the buildings?
Thanks
-
Looking good!

Flat-packed, nice. Can you tell me the manufacturer /seller of the buildings?
Thanks
They came from JB MDF Products on eBay.
They didn’t have them in 20mm, so these are the ones for 28mm.
I think they were 28mm Sloped Shed /Hovel removable roofs and options for windows doors
-
Love those shacks. They look really good. An should be quite versatile...
-
I’ve also been able to obtain a couple of buildings to use as stores.
These came from “The Square”.

Having seen these 'In the flesh' I can attest that Bob
has done a very good job on these.
-
Very nice start.
As I was scrolling down the pictures I was thinking I'd chuck a few old tyres on that, and then there they were..!
If you're after any of the weird and wonderful vehicles I'd highly recommend S&S, superb range, and great to deal with as well.

Great looking shacks! I scratch-built mine, as well. Here's an account on how I did mine on my blog:

Cheers Ash.
I don’t think I’ll achieve all you have in your posts on this subject, but nice to hear I’m going in the right direction by adding the tyres.
I’ve got a few of the different vehicles for this period. I’ll show them later.
-
Some HO scale civilian vehicles for the period.
Idea will be to use them on armed convoy runs etc.
Got these from the Oxford range of vehicles.
Got them a little cheaper by visiting die cast fairs here in the uk.

The Land Rover and the Beetle look more like 4mm or larger.
-
I like them! Do not forget to add a lot of dust, for that African bushlands look :)
-
I like them! Do not forget to add a lot of dust, for that African bushlands look :)
Completely agree.
These are fresh out the box.
I think it’ll be a process of painting out the windows, a dark wash all over, then, like you say, plenty of dust onto them.
-
I’ve been on the search for HO scale bungalows, and buildings to use as Rhodesian farms.
I’ve obtained a few plastic model bungalows, and some Sarrisa cow sheds / barns.
Has.been of this parish now has these items, with the plan of making a farm to battle for.
HO scale bungalow.

Another bungalow and a bookings hall that will be adapted to fit into the farm.

Thanks CaptJim,
Good to know my bits and pieces should do the trick. ;)
-
Nice finds. This should look great. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress.
-
Completely agree.

The most characteristic feature of worn cars' paint is that it loses the factory gloss, it becomes matte, especially in a dusty environment. If you do not want to strip the diecast paint, then just spray it with GW Purity Seal (mask the windows), it gives a nice "worn" shine.
-
Agree about dirtying up the vehicles for the games.
Here’s a BTR 40 die cast, that I’ve repainted for the period and added a hmg.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CxtzLGMc/IMG-4766.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/TKVRtWDb)
And here’s a die cast landrover that I’ve mucked about with.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3xWkTShy/IMG-4767.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/87QpdbjD)
Could probably do with a wheel and tyre change, but it ain’t happening.
-
Well, it's obvious they've seen a few dirt roads....we have a fair number of dirt/stone roads around where I live, and people's vehicles all become one dusty/dirty color until rain washes them off. Of course, they then get dirty again....

The hut-burg looks good. Even if it was has.been's handiwork... ;D :D
And a shotgun, an Uzi, and 2 SLR's oughta help defend the farm.. They look good, too.

CapnJim,
Like the old saying goes “when you run out of talent, OUTSOURCE!” lol lol
Be afraid, as I’ve outsourced the farm buildings to him as well. o_o

You do realize that I'm listening guys, don't you? :D

-
You’ve got the builders in, and so have I ?
Finished yet ?
Lol

Nice -looking rebels you've done there...they look sufficiently irregular... :)

Nice stuff! Now, I'm ready to read some battle reports... :D

Found this in hobbycraft the other day.

I’m sure when I looked, the only one’s available in 20mm are retailing at about £30…gulp.

The fun begins...

Great project Bob!

-
Love it! Keep the project coming. I have some air support for my games, too. I found I liked the die cast better than the plastic kids. My days of putting together a model with dozens and dozens of tiny parts are loooong since over! lol
I try to keep an eye out at flea markets and such to get a good price.

Mike, I completely agree, but have struggled for diecast items in this scale, and at the right price lol
The air support has come about in different ways.
The hunter model was found in a model shop, costing only £10.
The helicopter models were £10 each, but I did buy one for only £3 a few years ago. (Wish I’d bought more at this price).
The push/pull Cessna was around £10 from eBay. Plan is to remove what’s left of the undercarriage, mount a couple of cannons on top of the wings, then a repaint.
-
excellent looking models

I agree, I couldn’t find them on the Internet too.
I had to go to a show at Devises to buy the items off his stand.
Sorry about that.

I've also wasted a fair amount of time hunting for these online.
Picked mine up from Salute, they generally have a fairly comprehensive amount of stuff.

Can I ask where you got your African posters and advertising from ?
They really add character to the buildings.

Ash,

These were seriously simple. Sprayed with Halfords Grey car primer, then relatively cheapo acrylic (Artiste from amazon) paint. Mixed a little blue in for the colour change, left the primer for the 'concrete'. Then slapped on some watered down mig pigment. The end.

Various Google image searches. Chuck them into a Word doc., copy paste the pics at different sizes. Ink jet print, stick on with PVA, once dry give them a thin wash or watered down pigments.
Used to do the same for 40k buildings way back...
I have a load saved somewhere on my HD. If you want to, PM me an email address I can send what I have as attachments.

African shantytown buildings.
Bought these last year from Ironclad miniatures.
20mm shantytown buildings.
Had a set of Warbases pond bases that were sat in a drawer.
Thought I’d add the two together.
I’d like to be able to remove the building rooftops, so I’ve not glued them down, and I’m adding matchsticks inside them, as a key way for locating them.
Basic buildings and pond bases.
(https://i.postimg.cc/PxhY410X/IMG-5485.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Jy6s7H1v)
Preparation. What fits where ?
(https://i.postimg.cc/QMcc1f4Y/IMG-5486.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NyfywkwR)
Final fitting.
The pond bases worked for a couple of the buildings, but I had to find a couple more suitable homemade bases to finish off basing the buildings.

You never know. I may get this finished before the farm that has.been is putting together for me lol lol lol :o

Bob, the rate that you are going, & the rate I'm going, I reckon it's a racing cert that you'll finish first. :?
Good work on the shanty town.

Nice.
I will have to look out for those bases.

Cheers Ash.
All inspired by your great Rhodesian work.
Thanks for the posters. I’ll add those at the end.
Moved on a little more.

Progressing well Bob.
Honest, after Gregor's visit I WILL crack on with THE farm. ;)
-
Loving it all mate!

A little more progress.
Bases finished, and tarps added (yet to dry and be painted).

Those look very convincing. What material are the tarps made from? They seem like they’ll be just right when they are dry and painted.

The tarps are made from wet wipes.
I dried them out for 24hrs, then I dipped them in 50/50 pva glue and water.
First time I’ve tried it tbh.
I saw the method on YouTube (somewhere), and they said wet wipes were better than tissues ( tried that before, but unsuccessfully), as the wet wipes are designed to hold moisture.
-
I like the wet wipes tarps. Idea duly stolen. :)
-
Thanks for the info, I may just try that technique!
-
Now we're talkin'! Those look great! Well done!
-
Finishing touches on the shantytown buildings.
Tarps came out well.
Painted up the goods for sale at the shops.

Excellent work Bob.

Very nice!

Those shanties look spot on Bob :o ;D
-
Farm equipment incoming.
I’ve commissioned Has.Been from this parish, to paint up my farm for gaming.
First wave of items have come back, and they look great (cheers Pete).
I’ve just tarted around with car windscreens and added a little more vegetation to the bases.
Really chuffed with the work Pete has done.
Big question is can we move into the farm before Christmas? lol

I agree, Jim -- this is going to be a spectacular looking tabletop!

Landrover series 2 ?
Saw this, and thought it came with a recoilless rifle, then realized it was a surfboard.
I guess the surfboard could come off ? lol lol

Keep it on! Just supply your imagination with a fabulous surf coast. Sith Ifrica has one after all.
Alternatively transfer it to a Huey for Vietnam.

Adding vehicles to the Bush wars garage.
Just finished a couple of anti-mine vehicles.

Give the surf board to Pete, I'm sure he could convert it into something lol lol
Wouldn’t it look good next to his swimming pool ? lol lol
-
But Bob, it's YOUR swimming pool. 8)
-
Wow those homesteads look great 8)
The little landy is perfect, try and trim the board off with a hobby saw and add it as set dressing to the pool, leaning up against the house maybe.
Then you can add a MG or AAGun to the landy SAS style ;)
-
I like those vehicles. Well done!

Great stuff! With or without surfboards...considering Charlie doesn't surf... lol

No posts for several months on this subject, but look what my mate has.been found on eBay.
A 1/72 die cast vampire.
Now it just needs a repaint so that it can join my South African airforce. lol

(https://i.postimg.cc/1txzbN14/IMG-6665.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/1gHPqXtZ)

Good luck with the repaint Bob. Do you have South African transfers? or are you painting them?
-
Cheers Pete.
They don’t carry many markings, so should be ok.
-
A little more progress on the Cessna.
Has.been added the top guns and some underwing stores.
(https://i.postimg.cc/mr1DT2j2/IMG-6018.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/nsZZkxN6)
(https://i.postimg.cc/zBmfvZ2w/IMG-6019.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/HJ2mvKgj)
Might line it up with the vampire for a paint job.
-
Wow, really playing catch up here.
As you may have seen earlier, has.been did a great job on the barns, but someone did point out on FB that the barns in South Africa had cement/concrete floors, so has.been did a rework.
Great job as normal.

A local garage that may come under attack at some stage ?
Has.been’s handy work.

Well done. Well done to all involved!

Good work Bob.
I must admit I was expecting a different picture given the title, but that
is down to my lack of modern military cognomens. lol
-
They'll certainly do the trick. Well done!

Ah yes - some of the original MRAP-type vehicles. Well done on them!
-
The crocodiles really are that long? What’s the troop capacity in them, do you know Bob?
Would love to see this lot on the table some time!

David,
I’d have to lookup the answer to your question tbh.
With ref to a game, I’ll struggle as we have decorators in the house, so guess where all the furniture went ? Into my shed of course.
-
Info here David.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_Armoured_Personnel_Carrier
Crew of two & 16 Infantry.
-
Cheers Pete.
-
Cheers Pete.
Now all you need Bob is (16 +2 =18. 18 x 3= 54) fifty four infantry! lol lol lol
-
Oh heck, only got 53 out of the 54 figures ready.
Give me another year and I’ll finish the missing figure lol.
-
Well, if you left the drivers with their vehicles...
you already have a surplus of two. :D
-
Cessna finished…finally.

Don't let JC pilot it, he'll only use it to track elephants. lol lol lol
-
Nice.

Nice looking Cessna! Also a prod at my conscience for having a 1/48 version sitting unbuilt in my cupboard of shame.
-
Like the Cessna Bob.

Cheers chaps.
Like I might have said before, it’s an old second hand airfix (?) 1/72 model, that came from eBay. Has.been kindly added the ordinance and I did the repaint.
Just need to get it to a table for a game I guess.
