Small pike and shot formation with native allies. They’ll be defending against pesky renaissance corsairs raiding the Caribbean. Awesome figures by Khurasan - more updates to come!

I really like those. They look great

Nicely done :)

These look awesome. Keep posting as you add to the painted collection.
Dan
PS. In some cases the number of native allies was as much as 10 (or more) times the number of Spaniards. That’s why the fall of the Aztec empire should be viewed more as a civil war (with a small number of foreign allies) than an invasion.
So much for the idea of Europeans steamrolling the poor peaceful locals. :)

Thanks, all! Spanish ordnance/mounted hidalgos are next. I'm thinking about posting a tutorial on how I paint my hidalgos.

1000%. After all, Cortes's force was nearly annihilated by the Tlaxcalans very early on. If I ever get into the conquest of the Mexica/Yucatan peninsula I'll bulk up on native regulars. For now, I plan on exploring small engagements in la Florida/Hispaniola between colonists forces and corsairs. I do have quite a few natives painted up but they're based as scouts/auxiliaries.

Nice work on these. Which rules are you planning to use them with?
-
Looking good. Don't forget a few Cimaroons too!

I purchased Irregular Wars a while back but I'm open to suggestions.

Cimaroons would be really cool. I think Grumpy 15mm has a Portuguese line with some African forces.

Very nice indeed

They probably wouldn't look all that African any more, following a few years as slaves and then living wild in darkest America. I've used pirate figures for mine, just avoiding tricorns.

If you look under Eureka Miniatures’ 28mm Conquistadores, Portuguese, you will find a close approximation of what Cimarrones looked like throughout most of the early Spanish Main:
https://eurekaminusa.com/collections/conquistadores-28mm-portuguese/products/100por13
And I would mix them with these runaway Indian slaves too, in the same horde or raiding party:
https://eurekaminusa.com/collections/conquistadores-28mm-portuguese/products/100por12
Or … you could draw a little inspiration from the Cimarrones I had painted up a few years ago, mostly from a Foundry “Renegades” range that didn’t get much popularity, and with a small mix of Black Tree Ethiopians too, with a few added helmets and shields from various sources:

Breakdown:
24 Foundry “Afro-Caribbean Renegades” (SB0-34) with mixed weapons
8 Black Tree Designs Ethiopians with mixed weapons (IA1196)
16 Foundry “Afro-Caribbean Renegades” (SB0-35) with bows
8 Foundry Darkest Africa Tribal Archers

Now, if only someone would come along and do something like that for 15mm …
Dan
PS. Just found these when I happened to look up “Afro-Caribbean Renegades”:

In the meantime, until someone releases 15mm figures similar to the awesome 28mm ones I cite above, these Khurasan Sudanese 15mm javelinmen and archers might do, if mixed in with other stand-ins.

If the tribal swordsmen come with separate shields, they would work also, if you add round Spanish bucklers, adargas or small primitive shields of their own making. The tip of their swords should be curved slightly to look like machetes.
They, of course, would be fighting AGAINST the Spanish, as allies to Indians, English, you name it.

Dan,
These are perfect. I 3d printed some warmaster swordsmen a while back - I'm thinking I can up the scale and scavenge the shields for these.

Alexander
That’s awesome. Very resourceful thinking. I like that!
Share some pics when you do the conversions, please.

Up next off the paint bench is mounted hidalgos, rodeleros and a light gun.
-
Most of the units are painted and based - now for the scenery. For the Spanish I plan on making 3 colonist houses, a church and a government building. I’ll also make a small makeshift stockade/fort. Playing area is 48X48 so no need to go super realistic with the colony size. More pics to come!
-
A bit more progress. Still need to paint the doors/shudders. It’s harder than I thought to get all the measurements even for 3 different structures. I feel like the houses are possibly too large. Thoughts?
-
This has been a frustrating process… I decided to change up the dimensions of the door/windows and the “framing” around each. I'm pretty happy with the result but I'll probably try superfine milliput or green stuff for the next roof I make. Paint next.

Cimaroons would be really cool. I think Grumpy 15mm has a Portuguese line with some African forces.
I'm currently working on a 15mm Portuguese Colonial Army for DBR, using Grumpy figures. The Buccaneer range, also from Grumpy, both lacks tricornes and includes Cimaroon/African-esque crewmen who I have mixed in with my Shot (F) and Blade (F) (to use the Barkerese terms) elements for variety.
On a related topic, does anyone know how the Blue Moon Darkest Africa Tribal warriors compare size-wise with Grumpy/Essex figures? From previous experience of that sculptor's work (Blue Moon Italian Wars and Battle Valor Games Frigians) I would suspect them to be closer to 18mm, but there isn't a lot of choice around for sub-Saharan Africans in 15mm.
