Title: Trev, King of Numidia
Post by: trev on August 10, 2023, 12:04:00 PM
Hi all,

I've finally managed to get my Romanised Numidian army of King Juba the first painted up.  The basing is for Art De La Guerre (ADLG) rules.  Some of my bases are a bit over regulation depth but I like the squares and the sizes in the rules are minimums anyway.  It hasn't proved an issue in any of the games we've played so far.  The generals are on round bases.  Commanders is ADLG can be integrated to a unit base or independent on their own base.

Juba is in the middle, with a Numidian prince on his left and some Spanish mercenary guardsmen on the right.  ADLG uses a base for a unit, so it doesn't need too many figures to make an army.  A bit bigger than DBA but achievable for those of us that lack the patience and focus to build really big armies.

Every Numidian army has to have lots of their famous javelin armed light cavalry.  They have proved pretty good under the ADLG rules so far.  These are Wargames Foundry figures.

These are Numidian noble cavalry.  Javelin armed medium cavalry in the rules with an option to be elite.  I'm not sure of the historical basis for these but ADLG medium cavalry can still skirmish quite well, so I can live with the idea some Numidian horsemen fought in slightly denser formations.  The figures are from A&A miniatures, an often overlooked but good source.

The traditional Numidian infantry are light armed like their cavalry but in ADLG you can field some as true skirmishers and some as slightly denser massed groups of Javelinmen, so I've done a mix.  These are Foundry figures again.

The bulk of my Numidian foot are Imitation legionaries. I've used a mix of Foundry Caesarian Romans I got cheap on evil-bay years ago.  I don't think there is a historical basis for the green shields , I just liked the colour and copied it from some figures Steve Jones put on his painting Shed blog.

The commanders are some old Scipio and Hannibal figures I had laying about.  You can't really see them but they're hiding at the back.  The nobility of Numidia was quite Romanised/Hellenised by this stage.

You have to have some elephants if you can.  These are A&A elephants with a Foundry legionary in the tower.

These Numidian light cavalry are from Crusader miniatures. The lovely eBob horses seem a bit big for Numidians but maybe these guys have acquired some imported horses.

It's nice to be playing Ancients regularly again after a log dry spell.

They look great.

Most ADLG armies I have seen are 15mm - but that may be more from competition reports.

I didn't know Hannibal had laid Scipio, or vice versa.

That's a splendid looking army. I've just grabbed a few Bauda Numidians from Magister Militum and really need to sort mine out into a viable army.

Looks very nice, with a unique look thanks to the "Romanization" angle.

Thanks all for the kind words.

Most ADLG armies I have seen are 15mm - but that may be more from competition reports.

I prefer 28mm.  I'm too blind for 15mm these days.  The big chunky bases are great and slide really well on the mouse-pad type gaming mats.

I didn't know Hannibal had laid Scipio, or vice versa.

I think it's in one of the lost books of Livy.  ;)

Looks very nice, with a unique look thanks to the "Romanization" angle.

My imitation legionaries have been pretty poor so far but they do look like they mean business.

That's a splendid looking army. I've just grabbed a few Bauda Numidians from Magister Militum and really need to sort mine out into a viable army.

Some of these have been half done is boxes for ages.  The achievable size of the ADLG armies inspired me to finish them.  Good luck getting yours done and please post some pictures when they are.
