There's always a Hamburger Tactica coming. Next time the main theme will be city fighting. Don and me again plan to do a presentation together.
There are many common ideas of city fighting scenarios: Stalingrad, Berlin in WW2, Mogadishu, Bagdad und Kabul in more modern time, Rome in different epochs, Paris und Marseille during the French revolution. Even Peking 1900 could be an option, but we already had that last time.
Then Don had the idea of Tenochtitlan, interesting architecture, not so very common setting and again there are relatively new plastic kits available.

Don just threw some cool thoughts onto some paper. Due to logistic reasons I will have to do the most buildings. So better start early to make it to the show:
Don’s drwawings had to be transferred to a 120 * 120 plan.
Then immediately fpr the big pyramid. There is no need to do everything historically correct as we like it a little pulpy. Therefore I didn’t stick to four steps, but had to make the pyramid even greater doing five steps.
As we had a sunny day in northern Germany I went to the “garden” behind our house. Quality hobby time.
The big stair up the front of the pyramid needs a frame. To imprint the stone blocks I need a rough surface. Luckily I had layed hands on some black styrofoam,. That will make things easier when the painting starts.

Stairs done without stone block shaping.

More to come.

Should be a fun terrain to fight over.

Thanks!

Give it an Apocalypto vibe.

This is going to be pretty amazing. Will the game be Spanish vs. natives, or tribe vs. tribe, like in Apocalypto?

I don't want to spoil the Tactica presentation too much, bit there will be some Conquistadores.
Meanwhile I have mustered some Aztec troops I bought back in the 90s in my favorite games shop that has long been closed. Didn't have time for more progress due to some renovations in the house.

to be continued

Sorry for double posting:
Today I had a good time for pencil work. Luckily we had some hard pencils at home. I really don’t like them for drawing or writing, but for making stonework in styrofoam they are perfect...
Next steps: roughen the surface of the stones and push some of them deeper into the walls. The step's stones need to be finished, the top surface of the big steps need to be filled and then the paining can begin.
Maybe Sunday?
-
Impressive. And I like the Apocalypto vibe idea.
-
Oh wow!!! That is fantastic.

Excellent work, a labour of love if ever I saw one!

I found a link to the Aztec game at Salute that I recalled. Longer ago than I thought, 2007.

What a project! Keep us updated.

Thanks a lot for the nice comments!
Just a little update. Added some texture to the walls, filled the big steps

Wonderful! I remember climbing on the steps of a small temple a Xcaret- the steps are tiny and very steep!
-
Thanks for the kind comment!
Mustering of the Aztec troops has begun.
Some have crept out of the pile of shame stored in the dark crevices of long forgotten drawers ;) They were joined by a pack of plastic Ghost Archipelago Tribals.

Then a horde fresh Aztecs and Tribals arrived from a place called the web..

I started working on the jaguar warrior lot. There will be about 30 of them. (WIP)
Hope you like my take on the jaguar skin

I think the next will have a more dense pattern of spots.

Again some not so good pictures. Hope the miniatures are better than the pics. Shields are still missing.

" Industry, industry ... you've all got more industry " ... than me ... ! :D
Great stuff.
-
Looking fantastic. The jaguar group looks very special. It must feel so good to pull the minis from the dusty corner of the grey mountain, well done.
I was just thinking, it would be quite hot stuffed inside a jaguar hide and fighting away in the jungle.
Looking forward to watching the city slowly grow.
Matt.

Thanks guys!
Here are some more pictures:

This time Eagle Warriors. I found it difficult to research proper ideas for the depiction of mexican eagles. But I'm quite content with the outcome of the golden mexican eagles, I chose as an example.
Cheers

Great project!
I’m loving the temple build….great stonework. Have you thought of adding in a little scaffolding like that shown in the Apocalypto picture posting? That would really lift it I think.
Looking forward to the rest of the build.
-
Good stuff. TY
-
Thx.
Managed to finish some more.
Thist time more characters for the top of the pyramid.

Next are buildings...
-
great figures and paint-jobs.
-
Thanks,
now let's return to the building of the temple district:
The main outlay will be somehow like this. The two strips in the front will come up as the dam leading across the lake.
For scale a closer shot of the big pyramid wit some of the Aztecs shown earlier.
Now the buildings will get some detail by adding previously carved stonework like on the pyramid.
-
That is going to be a stunning tabletop! :-*
I love the stone details and look for the pyramid...

Magnificent looking project buddy 👌

Thanks again!
Again some progress in my ongoing project Tenochtitlan for Hamburger Tactica and Bremer Spiele-Tage 2024. This time pillars supposed to support the bridge in between parts of the road to the temple district, the twin temple sitting on the top of the big pyramid and the prison for the victims of human sacrifice. To be painted of course!

Thanks a lot again!
Last weekend someting rather strange happened. I had turned away from Tenochtitlan for some days to paint Rackham Gobbos. I had lost one small bit of a rather large miniature during the last clean up so I had to start searching the pile of shame. I love and hate that process at the same time as it tells me how stupid I am when it comes to buying new stuff and it starts feelings of nostalgia in me, remembering the good old times. But it's really time comsuming.
Long story told short: I found even more OLD Foundry Aztecs, painted them up to join the forces für the upcoming shows.
Here the are:

They look great! Love the freehand on the shields :-*

Now that's a bit of serendipity...which spurred production! More serendipity...haha! lol

La Noche Triste (the sad night):
After some unexpected incidents during his expedition, Hernan Cortez returned with 1,200 Spaniards to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, which he had already conquered once and where an uprising had taken place after his governor Pedro de Alvarado had massacred the participants of the Aztec Spring Festival.
Cortes had been warned by his allies of the dangerous situation in the city – but had flouted all caution, not least because he had no respect for the Aztecs.
In the city, the Spaniards find themselves surrounded by the superiority of the Aztecs. Hundreds of Spaniards are trying to fight their way out. Will they survive against the massed Aztecs?
Play the events of Noche Triste at Hamburger Tactica live, in colour and miniature.

Very impressive table!! :-* :-* I would love to play on it, either side! Unfortunately, Hamburg is thousands of miles away.
-
What a table, wow, just wow.
I wonder if I could get Mrs V to go to Hamburger Tactica, she went to Antwerp Crisis a few years ago :-*.
Although she wouldn't go anywhere near the show and had her bicycle stolen while she was in Antwerp....maybe not then. :(
-
What a super-looking table!
-
Incredible! :o
-
That table is stunning! Well done, truly inspirational as well as aspirational work. 👍

FANTASTICO!!!!
nice work indeed :-*

Wow. Absolutely incredible.
Have you listened to the Rest Is History podcasts about the fall of the Aztecs? They devoted seven episodes to this. For someone who knew little about this period I found it fascinating. Your table looks like it has captured the splendour of city. Before it's destruction it must have really been a wonder of the world.
