Title: New Indian Mutiny unit just painted.
Post by: Trooper on 08 November 2009, 03:09:02 PM
My wargaming buddy, Jon Sutherland, has been building a massive Indian Mutiny collection over the last year or so. I presented him with a new British cavalry unit the other day, an ad hoc unit made of displaced EIC officers. Historically there were a few of these "units" attached to Crown forces, all out for revenge and blood.

Lovely stuff  8)

The old Foundry Indian Mutiny range are still great. I always fancied doing one of these ad-hoc units of displaced officers and civilians, often referred to as "Moss Troopers" with a nice historic link. If I remember correctly at one early stage in the war Havelock's cavalry for his column consisted of 15 such chaps.

Great unit and very nice painting! I think this just changes my mind about selling my Foundry Indian Mutiny stuff. True, they are quite small and won't probably mix up with the new Mutineer figures, but they can be painted up to some fine gems, as you showed us ...

very neat

just a question from me, since I see them on the miniatures - since when were pith helmets standard issued in the british army? I've tried to research this, and the earliest time was the Abysinian campaign...

is that true?

Depends what you mean by "standard issued." I'm not sure what that means. You see the air-pipe style of sun helmet at least a decade earlier than Abyssinia. It was quite common headgear during the Indian Mutiny (as seen in this thread - though seemingly not as common as the Havelock).

thx

standard issued as opposed to privately bought - mainly by officers
of course there could be examples where it was only regimental non regulation issue

Airpipe helmets were mass-produced at Cawnpore. Various units were issued them en-masse, such as the Rifle Brigade for example.

This type of helmet also seems to have been common to all ranks in China in 1860.

thx very much

some time ago I had a dispute with a friend about an alternate history setting, and it was not clear if we could use british troops in colonial outfit as intervention force in ACW

Thanks for all the kind comments here. I was asked to post some Mutiny pictures of the other elements of our collection. Here are some shots taken at our last battle, The relief of Rogan Josh.

Indeed, enjoying them very much. Great scenes there, Trooper. Nothing quite like massed ranks like that. Alas, I paint too slowly to ever play games of that sort.  :(

former user, one must bear in mind that the airpipe helmet of the 1850s/60s, is not the same as the later ones we are familiar with from the Zulu War, etc. But of course, one can ignore such niceties in an alt-history game if one wishes.  ;)

Am I allowed to say I like the two elephant models best, or would that be disrespectful to the whole HUGE rest of this awesome collection?

That is a great looking battle. All individually mounted to boot - awesome!  :-*  :-*

I like the elephants too - any chance of a close up of the howdah one?

Wonderful! The first Foundry figures I ever bought were Indian Mutiny sepoys. But I only ever had something like a dozen - nothing like the splendid action on display here!

The elephant with the howdah is the Foundry one, which I painted some years ago now, no closeups at the mo, but I will get you some next time we play. The elephants pulling guns are actually HAT plastics, which work very well with the Foundry sized figs.

Foundry also did (and presumably still do despite several confused and confusing range re-juggles :() some very nice elephants towing guns, carrying infantrymen etc.

The elephants pulling the guns are actually HAT Indian elephants with junk jewellery chains attached.  The commanders elephant is a Foundry one Trooper painted for me.  Most of the rest are either Foundry or OG, there are some First Corps here and there, some old Citadel and a bunch of figures I bought from Fleabay as "asiatic infantry" - no idea what they are really they just make nice rabble.

A truly excellent collection! I am so jealous that you have all yours painted while mine sit idly by waiting for me to get to them...the new Perry plastic French Cuirassiers and Carabiniers are on the workbench being built...and then I have a pile of the Perry's wonderful plastic WofR...and I don't even go medieval  o_o!

In any event, it is nice to see such a lovely set of armies on the tabletop.

Going back to your gift of British Mtd. Officers, am I correct that the horses are from Foundry's Sikh War range? Did you add any other bits to them? Please do tell... ???

Thank you all for the kind words. Arkoudaki, the horses are Foundry American Civil War horses, as they have better saddles and kit and are more animated than the rather boring and puny looking looking Mutiny ones.
