Hello All,
There is lots to talk about. Please allow me to spin a tale of a side project. I never know if people prefer the slow build up over weeks or just one giant “Grand Reveal!” thread. Let me know your preferred style.
This all started when 40K 10th got released. It was not me who fell to the dark side, it was the eldest child. Soon he had his best friend and brother playing. Now I have lots of opinions on GW, but I will say this. Having the boys build, paint, talk army lists, play, and argue rules was a pure blast. The gamer energy was high. I was shocked one weekend to look up from my painting desk to see the basement filled with people building and painting miniatures. It was fun not being alone in the “man cave.”
This gaming hype got my imagination going and I got the bug (pun intended) to build and paint a Sci-fi project. I wanted marines to face a horde of alien bugs. “Bugs, Mr. Rico. Zillions of em!” I re-read Starship troopers to get inspired and I made a couple of decisions.
First, the project will be in 15mm. I no longer have the desire to paint 28mm minis. I was very inspired by all the 15mm sci-fi work found LAF. Special mention goes to the “15 millimeters through space and time” blog for all the wonderful posts. Thank you, sir if you read this.
Second, the fighting would be at close quarters and underground. I wanted the marines to go into the swarm’s network of tunnels and caverns, a classic bug hunt. The decision served two purposes. It would allow me to use the cave terrain for a fantasy Dwarf vs. Goblin game later. It also allowed me to skip all the vehicles, aircraft, and big walkers. I would avoid the temptation of a runaway side projects.
Third, I settled on using the Space Hulk rules and missions for my setup. The simplified game system was just what I was looking for. Simple and Brutal. This let me build small forces at first while still collecting enough minis to run Xenos Rampant style games.
With all the brain stuff out of the way the project was on. Over the next month all the following things happen.
• Terrian was crafted and painted. Black Magic Craft style
• Tyranid “doors” were discovered on Thingiverse, scaled, 3D printed, and painted.
• Game counters were made with foamboard and label paper.
• Marines were ordered (Khurasan Miniatures Earthdoom Reserve Infantry) and painted.
• A Breacher vehicle was found on Etsy, ordered, assembled, and painted.I had to have at least one fun vehicle.
• Tyranid models were found on Thingiverse, a kind friend printed them to scale, and they were painted.
I am very happy how all this came together. Mission 1 is ready to play. In fact the boys and I have already run through Mission 1 several times. Those poor marines. I have many more bugs to paint, and some walkers are on the way, but I am ready to share the project.
Please enjoy the pictures and thanks for reading.

Well that is a very cool project! I haven’t seen anything like that breacher vehicle before, where is it from on Etsy? It is pretty amazing what 3D printed models are available now.

I too love the Breacher vehicle. :-*

Thank you gentlemen.

A good read & an interesting project.
I have a similar project using Bug Hunt 2 by Nordic weasel as it has a campaign system, though using Space hulk has merit.
Beautiful board if a bit large for 15/18. I'm might base them in groups.
You might look here for inspiration. 2 of the links have printable paper terrain

That is a great project! I had just started to follow a group on Facebook that is nothing but "Starship Troopers in 15mm". I am sure they would really enjoy your project too. https://www.facebook.com/groups/3161364650783562

if I only had a facebook account. ;)
Thank you for the kind words

What a fantastic start! I wish you lots and lots of fun games with those minis and terrain. Wow.
Dan
PS. I’m also going to need one of those “breachers” for my asteroid mine scenario.

Thank you. I find it very humorous and great that the best response is from an idea I had as a afterthought.
"Hey, a tunneler vehicle would be cool as a terrain piece to show how the marines got here."
I was thinking of that fight scene form the first Total Recall Movie.

Indeed, which is why we should always jot down ideas when we have them ( something which I rarely do :-[ )
That is a good idea.
And I've just had another idea, just modelling the disembarkation part/door & not having the whole vehicle would work also, to save space & time.
Doing a search on Artstation , Pinterest, Tumblr etc will yield a ton of useful pictures.
e.g.

That is the one. It seems small for 28mm miniatures. I think it is meant for dwarfs. Beefy for 15mm. I shared the link above for confirmation.

LouieN
Thanks! Did you select “Standard” or the “200%” option?
Dan
-
I choose standard. I guess the 200% is really meant for -28-32mm figures
-
Thank you. I find it very humorous and great that the best response is from an idea I had as a afterthought.

Hope those bugs don't bring powerdrills or augers! lol
Aside from that a great thread and fun project. Seems like it would make for a great beer and pretzels game too.
-
LouieN this looks great! Are you playing with the base game rules or have you got deathwing/genestealer/compendium? If not these add some more bits and bobs - yes of course I want to send standard guardsmen into a space hulk when eight foot super humans in tank suits can’t cut it lol
If I can help you with finding these rules please DM me and I’ll see what’s in my mountain of shame.

Right now I am just playing regulars 4th Ed rules. We played two rounds of mission 1 last night and as expected the Marines got eaten. yum yum.
I did tweak around the models I had. I made a grenade launcher vs a heavy flamer
I am working through the horde of bugs now and when that is done I will make the 2nd round of terrain. That will fill most of the needs for the follow on scenarios.
I will changes as I see fit to keep the game "balanced" So good for now but I will keep you in line.
There are some GZG robotic sentries and regular guardsmen (NSL) that may be incoming.
Thanks

The swarm was very jealous that the marines got so much attention for their tunneler vehicle. The Hivemind would like to remind humanity they always had a tunnel making "vehicle". It fact its family!
A Reaper Bones purple worm has been recruited to act as a big monster in our games.
The primary this week work has been getting the actual swarm painted. The first two units of "lesser" bugs are completed with a lot more on the painting table.

Hello gamers,
Another part of the Bug Hunt project is complete. Havelock suits from Alternative armies provide the Marines with much needed heavy support to deal with the swarm. I am also happy to report all the cave terrain is done. Terrain making is an awesome part of the hobby, but it is always a joy to mark something done. Only a few components still in work to see this project through.
Please enjoy the pictures and thank you
"With the Bug counter attack threating the entire campaign the Marshal activated the APU corp. The brute machines were able hold the line against the swarm. While their ability to traverse the tunnels was limited any place they stood was an anchor point in Marine defenses. "

Really cool stuff, I also am working on some Tyranids in 15mm, although I use rippers single based on 20mm bases (and a Hormagaunt as a big baddie).

Pretty inspiring!

Really great stuff LouieN. So much gaming potential in such a compact and practical package. Apologies for slow reply but Dan’s highlighting of Rob Hawkin’s blog and beautiful handy work broke my artistic spirit and any pride I had in anything I have done or will do lol and I thought I was depressed before :D
(Dan thank you for those links they have inspired me).
Ockman you’ve just reminded me that I’ve got old metal rippers for individual basing for 15mm and some of the epic larger versions (is it an Exocrine?) that look like mum to the babies.
Keep up the good work Louie

Hello All,
The heavy gun bugs bring the firepower to any swarm formations. The are rare in the tunnel battles; the tight confines restrict their use. They were much more common on numerous surface raids the swarm would launch. Any ground base could be quickly leveled when a horde of these living artillery would breach the surface and aimed their weapons at the human outpost.
As always please enjoy and thank you.

Great additions.
I’d missed the start of this thread, but glad to have spotted it today and read through it.
Impressed at the detail you have captured on these small bugs.
-
Hello Louie,
Those came out quite nice. I also like the colour scheme. :D
Personally I didn't give my nids any missile weapons as I designed them as a pure close quarters horde.
Not to hijack your thread, you can see them here https://castrarunis.blogspot.com/2016/09/15mm-xeno-monsters.html (https://castrarunis.blogspot.com/2016/09/15mm-xeno-monsters.html)
It would be interesting to make a different nid like species and having battle each other. A sort of a turf war while the heroes are trying to unearth a tomb or some such, perhaps.
Puppetwars, One page rules, Cyberforge ( to name but a few ) have some great ones. My only worry is that they would be too fiddly/fragile when 3d printed.
How did yours fair ?
Thanks for sharing

Thank you both for the kind replies.
Zrunelord,
I see no problem at all with different "bug" tribes having internal wars under the surface. Ant wars! The Drow in D&D have endless wars. Different Queens can be battling for supremacy. Different evolutionary paths of the same core species may have conflict.
I think we were successful in these 3D prints because they were 6mm designs scaled up to 15mm. The only one that was a 28mm design scaled down was the Big gun bug that has a lower profile. The two in the middle of the group.
While they were simple they worked really well. I hope that helps.

Welcome .
Ok must try some out.
Indeed. Wars for resources.
You should read this book.

Hello All,
Sing with me. "Me an my buddy; where ever I go he goes!"
"The soldiers loved when high command released the Bot corp to assist in the tunnel operations. While normally impractical for high speed campaigns the slow speed of the gun bots was not a negative in the tunnels. The Marines appreciated having the additional firepower and the bonus of being able to shot over the low drone."
These are gun drones from Ground Zero games. They are great, I loved these.
Please enjoy

I also got some sentry weapons from GZG. I hope to build a base around these mounts. More in the future.

"The Marine patrol was planting seismic sensors when they were ambushed. The bugs took out the APC in the opening salvo. The Marines fell back into a canyon and requested immediate evac. They were not going to last long. Lucky for the patrol, a Navy shuttle on a supply run responded and were able to pick up the survivors. Air drones were then called in to napalm the area. A reminder that no mission on this planet is a milk run."
The shuttle is from Clear Horizon Miniatures. It is a really a nice model and I am happy to add it into the collection.
Enjoy and Thank you

Nice paint job & story.
That shuttle and your choice of colours fits the bill well . ( which reminds me I have to paint mine ;) )
I could have sworn he also had a 28mm version which would have
been great for 15/18mm as a large shuttle but I've just checked and can't I locate it .
Though he has more flyers & some are very nice.

"The bugs did not launch surface raids often. Air supremacy meant any assault had limited time before air, and orbital, assets were brought to bear. That did not mean they never occurred.
The attack on Camp Williams happen during a gap in orbital coverage. Waves and waves of bugs were launched against the firebase supported by heavy gun bugs The fight was desperate..."
Hello All,
Over the last month I have built a terrain set to fit my Bug Hunt project. The theme is a gray ash waste style planet. "An ugly planet, a Bug planet!". While my story is that most of the combat happens under the surface, I wanted a set to play out larger Epic style games. Using One Page rules for example.
First, I acquired a felt cloth to match the gray-ash, setting. I then started a crafting the hills. Those also served to cover a gap in my Battletech terrain collection. I need BIG hills that could easily block LOS for 2" models. These were made with the classic pink insulation foam, mod podge, and paint.
I then need an actual base. For this I ordered from Brigade models a set from their 15mm research base. To complete the base I carved (pink foam again) the base security walls. Those were painted in the last 24 hours and now I can say Camp Williams is complete (for now).
Of course to celebrate all this I had to bring the collection out to set up a "GRAND REVEAL." At heart we are kids playing with toys. It is glorious.
I am very happy/pleased with how all this came together. There are models from numerous sources in these photos. Khurasan, 3D printing, Brigade, GZG, and Alternative Armies.
Please enjoy and thank for looking.

Nice looking collection and game

That's a great looking fort However I think you're going to need some bigger gates!

I was thinking of making some "laser" gates to go across the openings.
But of course...

When a raid occurs the Marines call on their drone tank assets for a rapid response. These drones are often air dropped and speed to the critical area.

Oh, I really like that lander!
I bought it myself years ago, but still hasn't built it. Wanted to magnetize the container, but haven't gotten around to do it. Is your lander magnetized?
-
I glued the container on. With the weight in the back I was not sure if it could stand without it. It just made life simpler.
Thanks

Hello,
After several games of One page rules the Alien hive mind noticed their forces struggled against the human armored vehicles. A new breed of Hive lord was cloned, one with the firepower to deal with the pesky tin cans. Crewmen would come to fear this new Hive Tyrant, deemed "Model 88".
One of my great joys is taking an existing model into my collection by "super-sizing" them. Hence a Tyranid warrior becomes a Hive Tyrant. A fun play test later and several marine vehicles lie wrecked upon the battle field.
Thank you and Enjoy
