So, inspired by the forthcoming A War Transformed rules, I picked up a box of Wargames Atllantic's Great War Germans.
https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2023/09/wargames-atlantic-great-war-germans.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2023/09/wargames-atlantic-great-war-germans.html)
As a proof of concept, I have assembled and painted the first one.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA2G3OQpwKdUyw0br96PcStG-Ypy7Wp9Dv5-Nke0NEsLlcgtAXrQjomO9kUxcg1-FHmcKUO9egz1Bs2b6EQOCgCvGL6si42GyDdeKWGalF0v5jewYXiL3dLjTfhecj9wqGnh6XGQu1Zmh-8FyuX_Hf6aFZrJNvIdvXVU8Orz3W-KHxaGtv2iBZX7HNeOwQ/s524/awt-german-infantry-7.png)
I was guided by the article in the North Star magazine, adjusted to the paints I have in stock.
http://nstarmagazine.com/A_WAR_TRANSFORMED_1.htm (http://nstarmagazine.com/A_WAR_TRANSFORMED_1.htm)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjurOlSqgqfWid_AMXKfwSGS_Rj_TLGzT3UcOJ5KUlC62GW3066TxPRqyxiQhdifsTfJImkuWM7ZPT2yLpgNf_I1zVgdhikKQBYWlZ46olD1C05f6dYhtXHNPLHK1pFn5MqsGLkVt6ywVq-R3jcvO_RFT1i3a36opv6VITMYmoztMn19JA6nwFmvW6HGe8t/s570/awt-german-infantry-6.png)
After an undercoat of Citadel Chaos Black spray, it was painted with Citadel Mechanicum Standard Grey. This was highlighted with a mix of Citadel Mechanicum Standard Grey and Army Painter Stone Golem.
The gloves and mask are Citadel Steel Legion Drab.
The rifle wood work, grenade handle and parts of the entrenching tool are Citadel Rhinox Hide.
The pouches, belt and boots are Citadel Dryad Bark.
The Bread Bag was Citadel Rakarth Flesh.
The helmet was first painted Citadel Zandri Dust, then patches of Citadel Rhinox Hide and Citadel Death World Forest were added.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicJJqpbmqxap_CB5UNffEl5U_jMUeUmINuwrogK4qKX413BqIaU1ndPa3jGwYvDCsFVYpXN3EpvebgoFEjFZpOx34rU1VIbWVWYN8yJdCpcX__cLVB3-wHiY4aMAKWOwF9wtkPd67w_ge5E_aJevR-dTNMIk6XXEMV9aFBaBKDUldzWzc6AQ0E8bueN2D0/s530/awt-german-infantry-5.png)
Metal work (rifle, bayonet and grenade head) were painted Vallejo Black Grey then dry brushed with Army Painter Stone Golem.
The lens surrounds of the gas mask were given a re coat of Vallejo Black Grey, then the lenses were first filled with Humbrol Matt White then Citadel Warpstone Glow.
Everything was given a light dry brush with Citadel Terminatus Stone.
The mask, helmet, boots, gloves, bread bag and woodwork was given a wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade.
-
He looks fantastic man. I like the helmet and gas mask a lot.
Thank you for offering some GW color alternatives to the paint schemes floating around.
Are you going to do any more with the basing? I feel some folk-horror infused green grass or flowers would really help him pop, but that's just one direction
of course you could go in.
-
Thanks.
On basing: I am going to wait until I have a few more figures assembled, and the Crooked Dice/Sarrisa wrecked boats before deciding on a basing theme.
The two options are muddy (generic WW1 and recently drained Doggerland), or a more Aral Sea style sand and grass.
-
Sehr gut mate!

Thanks.

Those are great ideas. I'm so torn on basing. I'm definitely not doing mud, but I want either a sand theme or pastoral with flowers.
And it needs to be easy to do.
I tried the Mediterranean Base-Ready mix and it looks good, but the rocks are a bit large.
The Pine Forest Base Ready is brilliant on my Warhammer, but may look a bit too dark / not enough green grass for flowers.
It's such fun sorting it out though.
-
Thanks.
Now I have no excuse for not cracking on with this project as I have received the book and the WA Great War British.
-
The book is very good (I will have some additional questions).
The Wargames Atllantic's British have been disappointing.
I am waiting for some Great War figures (at the post office).
-
Good news on the book. What is up with the WA British, I assume you liked the Germans?

I'm sticking to the metal Great War range for my infantry as well. Don't want to fiddle with assembly much. I'll go wild on all the other trappings -- my Witches, additions and trimmings, and of course Manifestations. I am considering some Frost Grave cultists for conveners.

There a number of issues (many have been listed elsewhere).
Sprue image
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIb13lLFd0pDYBkDYsedGP-qANNVv5Zh3hEpZfzp12V3Y3-DtVoUgXH9Xar5lWIY5sFkp0Kvfi_L_j1qPh17c3BJaEXxjDutYdT6l-8BAwumqd4P2V2-rn_wQovge_pLkS1Yqb_Dg77ZqlZ6VzbWeqlvUD6Yjh4gokxeUIc38aztWMtuHk-1tl6vy275ed/s734/gwBritish-3.png)
The arms and weapons are strange. Unlike the Germans (which have combined rifle and right arm),
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjMK96JKo_6EQjigbZmUeZBPXu4vMxStrf43rE-uYsdaFz7WWv1TDRZl6xr-tJwq3KsEoW0fxZKBc-nsAMYIwOVGfAItDJif4AA-zfbT0sd6cstEs6c9T0Jch5eV9Kik0aL716rclMyNQfOhFSOIDEE3Munxw0sLVgT5GRaE89twIEh264bwYraw6FtPb9/s667/gwGerman-3.png)
there are paired rifle and left arm - no identification of the corresponding right arm. As there are no other optional weapons, the design choice is a bit odd.
The blade of the entrenching tool is missing (my suspicion is that there was a plan to make it separate so it could be used as "armour", but it got forgotten). Carlos says the 1908 pattern webbing is incorrect at the back.
The gas masks have pipes that connect to the pack on the chest, but it is unclear which (if any) work with which body/chest pack.
I managed one figure, requiring later filling (I have not summoned the enthusiasm). I have a part built one and a mess of a body arms and weapon as I only have two hands and balancing one body, two arms and a gun exceeded my capabilities.

Love the proof of concept figure UVS 8)
-
Thanks.
-
Any thoughts on what the end project will look like... just so we all know at what point you declare the project is spiralling out of control, because I can see you having some fun with this lol
-
The plan (as much as it is) is as following:
Regular infantry from Great War.
British
The witch (which is a repurposed Squaller I made from the Wizards 2 sprue).
Crooked Dice May Queens.
Trying to work out a use for a Crooked Dice Straw Man.
For the Mindless Crooked Dice Corn Dolls.
Tanks and armoured cars.
German
The witch is a body from the Scavengers set with a staff arm and a pointing arm. The head is from the WA weapon add on sprue.
Flame thrower and T-Gewehr
Still some other things to work out.
The witches are photographed and hopefully I will get them on here shortly.

The body is from the Stargrave Scavengers set, the arms are from the Wizard and Soldier sets.
The head is from the Wargames Atllantic's Death Fields Weapons upgrade sprue.

So having ordered some Great War Miniatures figures, it was time to build and paint some.
I have started with one Capitan and eight figures (all in gas masks and including a Lewis Gun and assistant).
All are assembled, and in different states of painting.
This one is awaiting washing with Citadel Agrax Earthshade and Citadel Camoshade.
He is the Lewis Gun assistant (slightly re-posed).
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB8UaOwi2QQWKqTYWRyQT2kSq2LCB-2Riqzq_a2SSq_z1tz1pwgMXE2D6e9miRaJHjFzpGaUW6_ZnuqbuW6hFVT4T5tPUNqHj40g7pE3tiIv-8b9qlrb9FgPlbdWwejYQMXkdrh0P4W6bO1-2k3s61w7wX7jJUr5yT_SK8_pwTLBoncAoaqiJhx23YvGqc/s588/gwb-1-1.png)

The figure was undercoated with Citadel Chaos Black spray.
It was then base painted with Army Painter Leather brown spray.
I then gave it another coat of Army Painter Leather brown by brush to try to tone down the shine.
The helmet and water bottle are Citadel Death Korp Drab.
The puttees, mask and gloves are Citadel Steel Legion Drab.
Webbing, packs, Lewis gun ammo packs are Citadel Snot Womble Green, highlighted with Citadel Snotling Green Layer.
Hose and respirator pack are Citadel Rakarth Flesh.
Metalwork is Vallejo Black Grey.
Woodwork is Citadel Catachan Flesh.
The Leather brown was tidied up and then highlighted with a mix of Leather brown and Army Painter Stone Golem.
The mask lenses were painted Humbrol matt white, then Citadel Aethermatic Blue was applied.
It still needs to be washed with Citadel Agrax Earthshade and Citadel Camoshade.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggqTOIuwgq4vWXr_hyphenhyphenWsOZXhz5PaOjhQ4KkHnDkzY8m9Fn4rmXAMxu64080d1npxqlBGq4DgzScjc-qtgwPTQj9-mzAl_qLpqtKykGrFc2sAB6F7bZ27YFaYxRVVcMEDUBe5se6yvUD5jwbyk7H5gEt8i7Ilbc3NRHLYnWM9n7p75l-JcoKrl15Npsslgg/s524/gwb-1-3.png)
-
He looks gritty -- I like it. The mask lenses look rad, I may steal that option. Still not quite sure what to do with mine. Yours have a slightly unsettling effect, which I appreciate for the theme of the game.
-
Second figure, again from the British Command and Support in Gasmasks.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihp7fW_uUzyD28YILDgw5NaZmcOZBe3coeVQBNkNk3FfYgck0g_cuw33_lItF9RVN9x19csX9kZPj7SZSrtwbz_KkhjAQVePoI9SzQ5twXPDsz7HDJiWOMMzHxDDaJml1SqwwGOPSHVLtyQWr0JDRV2xRfUlGmfwhAvknifrtuwyadtvWu3_Ze67iKnH3r/s507/gwb-2-3.png)
Similar paint job, but the "webbing", packs and holster are Citadel Mournfang Brown to indicate an officer and being leather.
Here he is with the unpainted witch.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdHGO0fqr7VQOLXcIlYi7VYfF1IopX3YYfYPM8PxPmm9BtyEG3v8tabJ06SO6tLXH8i9pNQktltvA8gkTaRONoHp0mV2dmbsXSFeacGoPIKhQMcyb6UBEQlbW_19roh21VV5MDZyekzAqWIyJp9XqgFI8SWnQPUI4wVFG9kRCPs94bOSPSUDba1j4KyT9I/s500/gwb-2-4.png)
She was originally built as a Shadow and Bone style Squaller using components from the Frostgrave Soldiers 2 and Wizards 2 sprues, hence the windswept hair.
The rest of the first unit are in various states of completion, and the corresponding Germans are being based.
I have also based up my first attempt at a Cunning Man, using a Crooked Dice hero who has a remarkable resemblance to a war weary John Hurt.
The Crooked Dice/Sarissa wrecked boat is slowly coming together, getting the planks in place is a bit difficult.
-

Thanks.
Yes, he is unsettling - partly it is where I have slightly reposed the figure so he is gazing up at something which is reflected in the lenses - something either beautiful or deadly but equally fascinating.
-
One of the command options for British forces in A War Transformed is the Cunning Man.
Now Who could I use as a Cunning Man?
Crooked Dice has a war weary character in the Heroes 9 pack.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUEQLISw__6Wkl8NOnXLBbrlA0JLckbFjdComD9xKxO3jncSBUVjJLVFAe9M0g0zvOIzGRW6qLHe7Nn6kPZRHLFHf-1IGf3frXMm8G4GX_WrQG73Y92U-c5URheFJyd1sSo60n7A-JE594Kj01gQhbnXcdoEcOFJS2RV21u-fq6YzniOwvGIz4_ZCx5GiV/s523/wardoctor-1-1.png)

Great stuff, he works very well.

Looking gorgeous! Can’t wait to see those witches painted as well ;)

Some great builds and paint jobs there!

The Leichter Kampfwagen II (LK-II) was a German light tank developed towards the end of World War 1. Two prototypes were built by June 1918, but no more were completed before the war ended. The design lived on, illegally exported to Sweden as the M/21-29, one remained in Swedish service until 1938.
There were two weapon options, one armed with an MG08/15, the other with a 57mm Maxim-Nordenfelt gun.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjntkVoP8cZSuGVcaERJ2mrFp25-3w7FdMxCK2tJpwdvhZbxIQSDWfZA5SBIbrIO3FsK_Sq5qao2T-WuPF13ZX3rWXk9MPjAZgANIWbWqs_TKR4wmDvCpcU7pKSy7JCfkLdkLR9KxH3oZO5AGw5ZoiZ8ImcQX63whGABosRw-dWw7pv72QXANO29KJkXjWJ/s500/lk-2-2.png)
The Cunning Man attempts to disable the tank.
Those track links look vulnerable.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQbQTpMVgd5bjgDDjd604BRh2_NybW1QVuAlgnxnIQ5ZQ3mVvze-_uGSbEShW0xV5aeV_8Vjzqz0hs84IolNUlhVzzjBEKyPYhUm-yMxkHp4nMj1oMaaQIox78DesC20FpaT0nVrChUzOiQvXNmP_V1I9JHHGn76kqw21kuHAt5GCUTcDs5d5jcNzBKwfe/s500/lk-2-3.png)
The model is from Empress.
Though they did not make an impression on WW1 in our timeline, I propose that line production started earlier in AWT, as a reaction to the FT and the terrain in Doggerland.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhacwx95brPKYOtuJNSfJB76dUEeegv4tIvfNLVb6kMtRLsfd3yc1TzY4hJDuIVqQGZQ05h34LeeeHFSsofDJ9ewj4ofT5nTtAX_I_XX5VP_Q1s1PC4vAxIy9OP64sBWV_yEOefefrBnp1EyJ-f2Ur9sMLt9qld-ObqI_I6plotfTJFJG5EmWki6SXN_Wi-/s500/lk-2-5.png)
Rules wise, they are just a reskinned FT, their weapon options are close enough.
My only thoughts are definitely have to get agreement with your opponent before using and possibly they come out of your Elite budget rather than line.

WIP: I have printed these 28mm tanks with AWT in mind. I am looking for suitable runes to decorate them after painting. The K-Wagen will have barbed wire and maybe a sandbagged machine gun emplacement on top.

Wow, that K Wagen is enormous! You could probably put a small village on top of it!
What is the side mounted weapon on the A7V?

At risk of repeating what’s already been said I simply have to point out how enormous that K-wagen is! 3D printing has really energised this hobby, the model looks utterly stunning- though I’m sure it’ll look even better once you’ve painted it up ;)

No he is The Straw Man from Crooked Dice's Children of the Fields range.
https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/the-strawman/ (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/the-strawman/)
The range covers a lot of Folk Horror, and is well worth a look. A number of figures from the range (such as the May Queen's and the Corn Dolls) will feature here.

Having mentioned The Children of the Fields, here is what I am going to use for The Harrowed.

Standing over the fields of England, as their protector
The above is a bit of a cheat, it is from 2020, but I bought two packs at Warfare specifically for AWT.
https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/corn-dolls/ (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/product/corn-dolls/)
Three are assembled and based but need the shoulder joints filled (they are slightly reposed). Only another five for the first unit.
Saturday, July 2, 2011 (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2011/07/standing-over-fields-of-england-as.html)
I have a number of these 'in production' on 25mm normal and 30mm lipped bases (the latter for WWW2 games), and at some point I will post some more. If I do not get distracted.
