Hey all :)
My friend and I have been playing Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game with profiles we have created for our Warhammer Fantasy miniature collections.
They have been playtested but will probably be edited as time goes on
I might post some battle reports & an FAQ on this thread at some point too!
All available here: https://mesbgvariants.wordpress.com

Brilliant, thank you for all the obvious hard work, I’m going to peruse them as the system is one of the most underrated in my opinion.

I would echo that. Nicely done. 👍

Thanks very much! :)
It’s a fantastic system, I remember when I first played as a teenager with the blue hardback rulebook and it blew me away! I was so used to playing warhammer fantasy but never went back to it after playing lotr sbg.
-
GW definitely missed a trick not releasing an official WHF version (I’d still be playing it), but few of their decisions ever seem logical lol

This is a fantastic effort, thanks very much for sharing it. l

I know next to nothing about MESBG, but I get the impression that its both co-operative and competitive?

No worries! I’ll be uploading a slightly updated version of these soon!

If by competitive you mean two or more players playing against one another then yes it is a competitive game. Any cooperative play would be scenario specific. Hope this helps :)

Ok got it, so a mix of both. Is "good guys" vs "good guys" normal in the game? Or are there not really alignments like that?

Yes that’s perfectly feasible in the game. I’ve written warhammer fantasy profiles for this game and it is also fine to play “good” vs “good” though the line between good and evil is quite blurred in the old world lol

Ozreth I think the Tolkien world has pretty strict good/evil delineations, what I know of the tournament scene for MESBG it was/is often standard for each player to bring an equal points force of both good and evil so (presumably) you can always field a suitable opponent (may be other reason? balance/fun? Nice to have more armies?) but there’s so many twists and turns (as Warwick says) in both WHFB and ME you could reasonably get away with most conflict choices especially for the sake of getting them onto the tabletop.
It’s a pretty robust system that feels like you have plenty of choice/agency and your decisions matter but without slowing down and becoming a slog - heroes are heroes but not invincible, basic troops can do great things if used correctly etc certainly worth a look - I’ve always thought it would make a better system for Mordheim.

I’m actually planning to make a set of Battle Company profiles to replicate Mordheim :)

Awesome, thank you in advance - I’m also looking at Thud & Blunder (Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare) as it strikes me as a solid and involving system that’ll work well (with the right opponents lol ).

Not quite MESBG, but there was a draft version of a Mordheim conversion of LOTHS floating around here (Legends of the Ruined City - https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=129698.msg1643126#msg1643126) that might be helpful

I have the thud and blunder rules! Read through them but never played a game sadly, looked like quite a good system

Beautiful figs and a great looking game! It seems like the crossover profiles work well. I must give it a try!

Excellent! Love to see this. I like your choice of Empire figures - converted from historical ranges? My Empire army is made up of historicals as well, I much prefer that style!

Thanks!
Yes the Empire army is mainly made up of my perry miniatures wars of the roses army, no conversions in most of the base infantry at all as I use them for historical wargames too! The conversions are in the greatswords, which are warlord landsknechts with perry heads, and the hero models which are mainly perry wars of the roses models with extra bits stuck on.

Thank you for your work, was my first rulest. Have to take it for a spin.

I've made profiles for almost all the factions of the old world, so let me know in this thread if there's a particular army book you want finalising! :)
