I have been wanting a Lamasery for my monks in Central Asia/China/Manchuria for quite some time.

I figure that they deserve it - Dixon "pumpkin heads" and I love them dearly (Inspired by the great Dalai Soapy)

This is the proposed lay out.

My plan is for the lamasery to be rustic and fortified rather than highly decorated. The roof line will be inspired by Paul's (Overlord's) build in the last Build Something Contest

Looking forward to seeing it :)
-
Cool!
-
Thanks fellas. The initial fortifications are under construction. Here is the stairs to the crenelated roof (no crenelations yet) and structure gluing.

You can pretty much see what this portion will look like now.

Doors and lots of stone work to do. Gate and tower next.
-
The fiddly stonework part. This is going slower than I would prefer as you must let the glue set after a couple of courses or risk a major screw up and redoing large portions.

I had hoped to have finished this portion this weekend but it is not to be :?
-
Looking good though :)
-
More progress. The stone work on the front wall is complete except for the tops of the crenalations and I still need to get door handles made.

I also have started the front tower.

(http://i.imgur.com/M7dZw1g.jpg) (https://imgur.com/M7dZw1g)
There is lots more cork masonry to go and the daunting task of the mountain and cliff face. I need more cork!
-
The results are remarkable, however it sure looks time consuming.
-
Impressive.
If I could paint as quickly as you can build I'd switch to armies. ;)
-
Your build is ticking along nicely, it seems like you will have a splendid piece of scenery at the end.
I'm looking forward to seeing the final results.
-
Thanks fellas! I am continuing to make progress. The tower is coming to completion

(http://i.imgur.com/FtyNy5w.jpg) (https://imgur.com/FtyNy5w)
This is the fortified entrance of the lamasery as it stands now. I have started the gate but no pic as of yet
(http://i.imgur.com/MJC2gfF.jpg) (https://imgur.com/MJC2gfF)
I will have to think about the terrain yet but I have most of the cork (I think.....). Malcolm I wish that I could make more progress on the minis painting! Blast! I am falling behind!
-
Cool looking project! Can't wait to see the final product!
-
A real corker!
-
Lots of fiddly work on crenelations but the entry wall and front tower are completed with a small gate all but finished.
(http://i.imgur.com/gTQJMYI.jpg) (https://imgur.com/gTQJMYI)
Here are some pices of the finished tower.
(http://i.imgur.com/MUzbu2Y.jpg) (https://imgur.com/MUzbu2Y)
(http://i.imgur.com/VCrQfK6.jpg) (https://imgur.com/VCrQfK6)
Next will be work on the portion of the mountain base that supports the fortifications and also a courtyard. Then depending if I can get some more cork pads the base of the build and a entry staircase or the next level up with the lamasery itself. I haven't decided whether I will an upper tower or not.
-
This looks amazing :o :o
-
I have started work on the part of the build that I was most concerned about, the complex roof for the Lamasery. I have had to make multiple cuts that I messed up Than I laid out my plan on graph paper and cut out the lower roof portion. Here is the base of the roof.
(http://i.imgur.com/Bvm8KDO.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Bvm8KDO)
Yup, pretty basic and the corners will need to be trimmed. I also plan on gluing a thin piece of rod for the lower roof to be balanced on when it glues. Here are the lower roof pieces being laid out before I cut them. This was post mistakes (and I don't even have drinking to blame :?).
(http://i.imgur.com/N36AHBv.jpg) (https://imgur.com/N36AHBv)
This is the initial layout of the lower roof prior to trimming the corners and gluing.
(http://i.imgur.com/mKmseRj.jpg) (https://imgur.com/mKmseRj)
Next will be the upper roof.
-
Progress is being made on the roof. Everything was finally put together on the under structure (with a couple of small patches)
(http://i.imgur.com/nUe4REP.jpg) (https://imgur.com/nUe4REP)
(http://i.imgur.com/ZHmh42X.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ZHmh42X)
Pan tiles are slowly being applied but it should be completed this weekend.
(http://i.imgur.com/YOEf747.jpg) (https://imgur.com/YOEf747)
(http://i.imgur.com/8Y2HRwg.jpg) (https://imgur.com/8Y2HRwg)
The roof has turned out to be substantially larger than originally planned, which may mean that there will not be an upper tower. Time will tell.
-
As it was a long weekend I was able to complete tiling the roof. There are a couple of rough spots but a bit of spackling after everything dries shouls take care of that.

(http://i.imgur.com/20GoQQ7.jpg) (https://imgur.com/20GoQQ7)
Work on the main building will start next week.
-
It is going to be really cool to see the finished result.
-
Fascinating! :o :o
-
Coming along nicely :)
-
Thanks fellas.
-
Cracking job on the roof Lon 😎😎😎
-
That is great miniature carpentry. :D
-
Thanks guys! I have made some progress on the Lamasery itself. The door frame and the windows are on. The door itself needs more work.
(http://i.imgur.com/36eAX11.jpg) (https://imgur.com/36eAX11)
Here is a picture of the side of the building. Both are the same and the back does not have any windows.

Here the lamasery is with the roof in place.
(http://i.imgur.com/ud56UYx.jpg) (https://imgur.com/ud56UYx)
Lots of masonry work to go!
-
Masonry and the door are finally finished. This is the main building sans some final spackling and very minor masonry work.

and a view from the side

and another view from the side
(http://i.imgur.com/qQNpOW5.jpg) (https://imgur.com/qQNpOW5)
What remains is to tie everything into a substantial base, a number of staircases to be built and the gate to be finished. Then, of course, the painting. Lots of work to get stuck into.
-
That's pretty impressive Lon, both in structure and design, the roof must have been a nightmare to design, unless you have the math capability to calculate the angles. o_o.
Crack on there
-
Thanks John (math skills not so much).
My body has decided to further break down in order to confound me and provide a bit more pain in my life. The results of misspent youth and middle age, and...... One of the only consoling benefits is that chair bound hobby time has actually increased a bit. This has allowed me to work on a 1919 story rpg game with a friend, plot for the upcoming Kriegspielers campaign, and actually get some work done on this lamasery
With most of the building and structural work completed I have turned to the terrain aspects of a fortified, mountain lamasery and how to emphasise verticality. I have decided to build down from the top. I am concerned that if I started from the bottom I would terminally mess up spacing of the building elements. I believe that this will also allow me to modify the base as I go eliminating the look of the perfect circle of the cork pad.
Here is the incomplete base for the lamasery itself that will be located at the the top of the build. I expect to add two more layers. I am using thick darker cork tiles that I purchased several years ago. I believe that this cork has been heat treated because it has a slightly smoky smell right out of the packaging. It also has proven to be very crumbly, dirty to work with, and doesn't take glue as well as other cork tile, necessitating longer intervals for drying. Note that I have put a block on top to hold the hollow core building in place. I am going to do this for all buildings for stability, storage, and so the building can be used in other settings.
(http://i.imgur.com/VHQXdI9.jpg) (https://imgur.com/VHQXdI9)
Here is the lamasery in place. Again, there will be several more layers to the base and I will need to construct a staircase entrance.
(http://i.imgur.com/PShGiGC.jpg) (https://imgur.com/PShGiGC)
Finally, here is a picture of the elements mostly in place and an initial impression of the future verticality of the build.
(http://i.imgur.com/f2PH1Kb.jpg) (https://imgur.com/f2PH1Kb)
I will need to start cutting the underlying cork and gluing other sections in place to support the fortifications and to give a more cragy look to the base. There will also be a final staircase built, perhaps with a draw bridge element to access the fortified lamasery. Then all the painting o_o o_o lol
-
This is looking great and is going to be amazing when finished.
I noticed your wooden window outlines look, for all the world, like wooden letter B's. I may peak into the hobby shop and check out their stock of wooden letters and see if the B's or any other letters might make for good window framings... :D

Mike,
I hadn't noticed that! Great idea!

I can't get over how edible it looks... like it's made out of breakfast cereal or something... lol
-
It has been a while since I have been able to work on this build but a long weekend allowed me to finally finish the first staircase. This will finish the unfortified portion of the lamasery, which I intend to use by itself in certain games. I will still have a few gaps to finish and some minor stabilizing but otherwise everything is ready for painting.

,,,and with some inhabitants.

Looking great! Can’t wait to see the final product.
-
The unfortified portion of the lamasery painted. I was going for a "granite" effect. I am not sure how effective it was.

-
Looks great mate :)
-
That worked a treat! Very nice work.
-
I think it looks great!
-
I have finally got some more of my building mojo back and have started this project back up. I credit Vagabond and his posts for his upcoming China Station board ala Bob Murch. This lamasery was always planned to be a fortified hill top installation. So..... on with the hill top. The first step was to glue in an anchor block to anchor the already constructed lamasery base.
(http://i.imgur.com/FUAeXpD.jpg) (https://imgur.com/FUAeXpD)
Then, there were the major cuts to create and expand the hillside base.
(http://i.imgur.com/5oPXono.jpg) (https://imgur.com/5oPXono)
Finally, the fortifications temporarily in place.
(http://i.imgur.com/FcmaKJU.jpg) (https://imgur.com/FcmaKJU)
Next all the cork needs to be glued together with some minor spackling, and anchor blocks glued in place to anchor the fortifications.
-
That is going to look awesome in the true meaning of the word when it's all complete. The stone texture and painted colour looks great, I think our granite might be greyer but it does look dour, yours is much better.
I'd offer to race you to the finish line with the buildings but I'd be giving you a two month start and now you've got going again you need to keep at it. :D
Cheers
-
It's going to look excellent, but be a bear to store, I imagine... :D

Work continues, but slowly. The base has been glued together and the major gaps spackled.

The plynths for the Fu Lions at the entrance to the lamasery. I still need to do some minimal tidying up the masonry but essentially finished.
(http://i.imgur.com/cv2GKbq.jpg) (https://imgur.com/cv2GKbq)
-
Quite a project you've undertaken.
On the foo dogs, remember to reverse their positions when 'permanently' installed. I'm pretty sure that is the normal way to have them set up. But I'm no expert, just what I recall seeing, the items under the paws to the inside.
-
Those do look the biz. Should fit in nicely.
-
15s, I am agree that the Fu Lions would look better reversed. However, the Fu Lion with the ball is the male and he should be located on the right side of an entrance (looking out) :?
I have finally finished all of the build (except for a layer of dilute PVA over the styrofoam core of the foam core that is exposed in the crenelations). Next up painting, as soon as the glue dries.

The Fu lions have been painted.

After almost two years I have finally completed this project. I particularly like it be cause I can use the lamasery as fortified or non-fortified. Here are pictures of the lamasery on it's fortifified base without staircase and Fu lions so that you can see it a bit closer.
