I rode that the Black Flag were irregular Chinese and ex Taiping? Could the Taipings be used as Black Flag from the Opium war range?

I rode that the Black Flag were irregular Chinese and ex Taiping? Could the Taipings be used as Black Flag from the Opium war range?

The relationship between the Black Flags and the Taiping was pretty tenuous at best. The leader of the so-called 'Kingdom of Yanling', from which the Black Flags split in 1864, was a man by the name of Wu Yuanqing who claimed he was a Taiping officer, but there's no other evidence besides his own word. While their supposed connections to the Taiping had popular purchase (the French routinely referred to ethnic Chinese rebels as 'Taipings' for decades afterward), there's no actual concrete link between them in terms of goals or personnel, except insofar as some former Taiping might have slipped into Vietnam as things went proverbially south for them in China.

EnclavedMicrostate
thanks for your fascinating comments...with the vast numbers of troops
and complicated factions and battles.i was unaware of this guy..Is there
a good book on him and his machinations. i have books which mention the
coming over of the Taiping Rebels ,but its often along the lines of "some"
former Taiping Rebels..a touch of the almost romantic Ronin style warrior.
For me as a manufacturer the Tonkin period holds the greater interest with
the sheer variety of troops on display as it were. look forward to your comments

Unfortunately I don't think anything exists in English on Yanling (and I haven't looked deeply enough to see if anything exists in Chinese) – what I know about this period I mostly know from Bradley Camp Davis' book on the Black and Yellow Flags.

Yep, that's the one!

A friend of my dad's was, for over a decade, trying to get a book on the Sino-French War published, but it still has yet to see the light of day. A different friend – though not, it seems, a mutual one – happened to work for Hong Kong University Press when the manuscript was being passed around, and apparently he just wasn't willing to edit it down to a readable length...

Received my paperback copy today, a little bit disapointed, total of 260-270 pages with only 190 pages text, à lot of pages with names and other. Now find the time to read.

Maybe doying some heads on poles/pikes? When reading it is often mentioned by the Black Flags.

this is a good book on the war, too. Well written (which makes a change) by a British journalist - and baronet - who covered the war.
