Title: ACW boardgames generates a tabletop game (Fox' Gap)
Post by: Norm on October 28, 2023, 09:16:20 PM
I was only introduced to Brothers at War a few days ago, but already hugely appreciate what the designer has given us. In our first face-to-face trial of the game, we went with the intro 9 turn scenario for Fox's Gap.

A situation developed that I thought might translate well to the figures table - it did and so I did a bit of a write up on my blog. The Brigade level transfered well to the table and I used Black Powder rules, which also has hits and saves as a key part of the system.

Overall, I think this game makes a good scenario generator.

Anyway, this link gives an account and some pictures of the action.

Good game Norm great report. This boardgames looks just up your street. I look forward to seeing more of the scenarios. Will you play this one through again? I am curious to see what might happen if Confederateso won the iniatitive at the beginning.

I will. In the game, the opening fire by 30th Ohio was devastating, they got 4 hits and the confederates saved just 1! So, I think there is scope for a different game to unfold.

I am now diving back into the boardgame to embed the rules to memory and run a couple more of the scenarios.

Nice report with some gorgeous terrain and figures. I helped playtest BaW and I agree it really does have a miniatures game feel at times. Like you, I'm not normally a big card guy, but they work well in BaW to simulate the fog of war. It's always fun (or not, depending on which side you are playing) when someone has the perfect attack lined up and some unforeseen event sends everything sideways! I see you also posted this on BGG and CSW, so you know where to go if you run into any rule questions.

This looks really interesting. You mentioned the importance of initiative and the brutal opening Union volley. Would things have been pretty similar in the boardgame?

Thanks all.

Well, when we played last Friday, we were both feeling our way through the system, so I think as the Union player, I probably left my attack a turn or so too late. When the attack went in, it was very effective in collapsing Garland’s brigade. I did though spend a whole turn not activating Scammon as the two end of chits were drawn before either of the Scammon chits - this did give the Confederates some brief respite, that they might not have otherwise expected.

So I think overall, the possible variables of both boardgame and tabletop games, with see them operating within similar parameters.

Interesting, thanks. The boardgame sounds like something I'd like to explore, but I had a look and postage from the US to Australia effectively doubles it's price. So maybe I'll enjoy it vicariously through your posts!
