Today we played out our first game of WW1 Dogfighters.
The rules are based on Fistful of Lead Starfighters Sci-Fi rules.
The WW1 version was created by Al Agulia on the Wiley Games FB group.
His modifications were a simple 1.5 page document.
They included a modification for adding height to the game, jamming and unjamming machine guns, and tailing.
He has put a lot of time into creating the aircraft performance cards (which we used) and also a set of pilot cards (which we didn’t use for this first game today).
The aircraft are all 1/144 scale, and are metal Red Eagle or resin 3D printed from Syborg.
Todays first game consisted of 10 German aircraft patrolling the western front, who clashed with 6 British aircraft.
It was a terrible day for the RFC/RAF as they lost 3 aircraft, whilst 10 German aircraft safely returned to their airfields. :o
The British SE5a patrol their sector, unaware of the German growing storm.

Good fun was had by all, and it was played in a great spirit, as we love this period.
The rules worked well for a large number of the aircraft in the sky at once, and it did feel like a rolling and twisting WW1 dogfight.
I’d definitely play again.

Looks great.
-
Thank you.
It was good fun, having so many aircraft in the sky at once..
-
It was a fun outing of a LOT of planes.
Praise must go to JC who snapped up a box-file full of aircraft at the last Newbury show & Bob (Flatpack) who
made them all 'air-worthy' (i.e. repairs, tart ups, new transfers & flight bases).
Bob is also the driving force in getting us into 3D printed aircraft.
Well done Bob.
We did make some house rules which may, or may not, see through the test of time.
Instead of 45 degree turns, & despite Bob making two excellent (cardboard) turn indicators, we (might)
use the fact that we have based all our planes on flight bases that are hexagonal, & allow turns UP TO 60 degrees.
(Simply put a finger on one of the hexagonal 'points' & turn it UP TO the next 'point').
I personally didn't think the various heights added a lot of fun to the game. Indeed the origional Space ship rules don't have height differences.
We included a (possible) collision rule. Each pilot threw a D10. If the numbers matched they had collided & had to dice for damage.
The one & only succesful(?) collision resulted in damage to the German, but not the Brit. !?!? Sturdy stuff those British kites.
We might have missed something concerning un-jamming machine guns, & before our next encounter we Germans will be having
some serious words with our ground crews. far too many of ours jammed & tended to remain so.
Once I have sorted out some technical problems with my camera I will add my pictures to this thread.

Any idea if the Fistful Of Lead gurus might offer some WW1 rules one of these days, based on Mr. Agulia's mods?

Chatting to Al Aguila on line, he mentioned that Wiley games may release his rule mods in the future. These mods are available free from the Wiley games fb page, if that helps.

Pete
I’ve passed you rule modification suggestions on to Al. (The chap that wrote the ww1 version).
Cheers

Thanks...Norman. lol lol lol

Glad you had fun. The game is meant, like Starfighters, is meant to be played with hordes of planes.
I went round and round with Al about altitude. Nice to know you agree.
We’ll release the full WWI variant at some point but waaaaay down the road. Just have other things Im more interested right now. Until then, the mods are free on Facebook group.

Great post, I'm a big fan of ww1 planes, but use the Wings of Glory rules which I find works well for me.
Probable max 6 to 10 planes on the table at one time.
How are you finding the Syborg planes for quality, the pictures on their site look to have quite distinct layers on the fuselage although the wings look very smooth. I'm using the WoG planes which are expensive and scarce but quite good quality.
Cheers

Clear plastic stands are the way to do it. Lovely.

Syborg planes are lovely, and a pleasure to paint.
Pay a little more and go for the resin material option, it’s well worth it.
These are syborg resins.

Really nice, I like the planes and the bases!!!
These aircraft are from Reduced Aircraft Factory on Shapeways, some I painted and others I got printed with the paint job done using different color filaments.

Well, yes - provided you can get them to answer your email enquiries!!!

I had a similar problem with them on the run up to the Colours show at Newbury race course recently.
The chap on the stall did apologise and said they had real issues with their emails at the time.
Sounds like those issues haven’t gone away or been resolved.

Great looking game. Enough going on for some nice narrative and fisherman's yarns :-).

That was where I first noticed it - it meant that the aircraft I'd ordered to collect at the show weren't there! I've since emailed him twice more, and started a thread on his forum (which has been responded to by another customer), but absolutely nothing whatsoever from him. I even put out a request on here for any alternative contact routes, hoping anyone who knew him would at least give him a nudge and wake him up - but nowt!
-
Could you not cancel your order, via your credit card firm ?
If it helps, I went looking for alternative firms in the uk.
Try paint and glue.
They seem to sell the same aircraft.
-
Sounds like the only issues they're having is in NOT answering their emails!!! lol
I just went a few rounds with Amazon over an OBD scanner for my Mini, I'm still shaking my head at their policies but at least I now know what took place.
This stuff is addictive, now I'm wanting to get 10 more airplanes, but I'm also thinking of getting additional planes of the types I already have instead of different types. Decisions, decisions! o_o

Deepcut. Part of my Christmas present from my wife a couple of years ago.
She offered to buy me two mats, & while I was still considering, the nice
fellows at Deepcut put up an offer, 'Buy two, get a third free' :D :D :D
