Title: 15mm Goblins
Post by: jeffreythancock on November 16, 2023, 01:20:50 AM
Does any manufacturer of 15mm miniatures offer Goblins in the AD&D 1st Edition Monster Manual style?

Most of the offerings I've found seem more GW/Citadel style Goblins.

Thanks!

The former Grenadier goblins produced by Mirliton (https://www.mirliton.it/fantasy-15-mm/goblins) might be your best bet. They're by Sandra Garrity (Ral Partha, Grenadier).

The photo might be a bit unflattering. I haven't seen the goblins in the 'flesh', but the accompanying orc range (https://www.mirliton.it/fantasy-15-mm/orks) consists of some of the best 15mm miniatures ever made - right up there with Copplestone. Again, the Mirliton photos don't flatter them, but they are marvellous to behold in the metal.

Another option - potentially more accessible - is to use Copplestone 10mm orcs and half-orcs (https://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/list.php?cat=6&sub=24&page=1) as goblins. Monster Manual goblins are 4' high, so two-thirds of the height of a tallish man.

You'd have to cut most of them off their strips, but that should be doable. And a few characters are available as individuals:

Another 10mm option would be the great orcs from Magister Militum  (https://www.magistermilitum.com/fog102-great-orc-warriors-with-spears.html)(they're closing down, but I think you can still order these - a lot of stuff has been taken off the site already):

I'm actually painting some of these up as small 15mm goblins at the moment. They stand shoulder-high to a Museum Miniatures 15mm crusader. There are great-orc archers (https://www.magistermilitum.com/fog112-greater-orc-archers.html) too:

The 10mm Magister Militum bugbears might also work if you want your goblins to look like smaller cousins of bugbears (in D&D style), though I imagine they're closer to man size in 15mm (in which case they might make good hobgoblins):

Also, the Alternative Armies 15mm HOT orcs and goblins (https://www.alternative-armies.com/collections/15mm-hot-fantasy-range) (they are mostly interchangeable) aren't terribly GW-ish (excluding the goblin archers and orc command and boar riders, which are), although they are relatively tall. Most of them are quite Tolkien-esque, barring the height, and Monster Manual goblins are essentially Tolkien's orcs.

You can see some of them below, on the right-hand side of the left-hand base (crouching with spear and standing with axe) and the left-hand side of the right-hand base (raised scimitar). Most of them are slightly shorter than a Museum knight or a Copplestone barbarian, although that big guy with the scimitar (a 'mountain orc') is easily man-height.

And one more: the Tin Soldier UK orcs and goblins (https://tinsoldieruk.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=413_447&sort=8&page=all&zenid=8b74vm9vutu8on8ael4m9sjf22) (again, they're entirely interchangeable in stance and stature).

They look like somewhat stylised versions of old Ral Partha 25mm figures (I think that's why the goblins are "giant goblins", as the RP orcs/half-orcs/giant goblins were), but they paint up very nicely and have a lot of character. They're also very squat and slouching, so they're a nice compromise between being the 'proper' Monster Manual size (i.e. 10mm figures) and still being easy to paint and see; they look suitably short on the table. They would probably be as big or bigger than the AA goblins if they stood up straight, but they never do!

It's not a great photo, but these (in the foreground) are some I painted up as RuneQuest trollkin:

That's a very good call! They'd work nicely, and one even has the Monster Manual horned helmet!
