Title: A greenhorn entering the wild west (Update April 10 2025)
Post by: Malebolgia on 11 December 2023, 08:57:43 AM
Hey! I’m on LAF for ages now, but I am just starting with the wild west setting. I found the ‘Dead Man’s Hand’ kickstarter and was blown away, loved what I saw and knew I had to dive in. So I bought some resin cacti, 3D printed rock formations and 3D printed cacti, a box of HIPS females and a metal guy.
So much fun to paint, those HIPS models are so easy to do. The cacti and rock formations were also very easy to do.

And then I was stuck with another idea: a big hill with a mine entrance. Ever since playing Read Dead Online I loved the idea of mines in the wild west setting. I started out with a foamed pvc base and covered this with foam blocks, some cardboard, balsa wood to get basic shape.

Then I glued cork bark to the shape to get the rocky formations and I used more foam to cover it all and used duct tape to cover some pieces.

From there I covered it all with Modelling Compound from Geek Gaming. Such a fantastic product and it makes shaping scenery very easy. I then used a ready-made filler to smooth it well afterwards.

After the modelling compound I used fine sand and tile grout to cover the sandy parts and then soaked it well wih water. The tile grout is so cool to lock everything in place and make for a strong and sturdy sandy layer.

Then it was time to paint it all, that was the easiest step. I covered it with an acrylic brown spray and then applied oil washes to the rocky bits. Then it was mostly a matter of applying some contrast paints and drybrushing.
And then I wanted to add some plants. At first I went with some tufts and though I was finished. But after googling the wild west I saw it wasn’t as dusty and sandy as I thought! So I went to town with a lot more plants, gravel, turf, etc. to add more colour and greenery. And as a final touch I added two small bottles by the barrel and called it done!

Next up will be more painted ladies! So far I’m having a blast with this project!

Great looking stuff - an excellent start!

I love the "you can never have too many guns" bandit lady and the mine is spectacular.

Looking forward to further posts.

The mine looks sweet!!!

I recently got a 3D printer, Elegoo Neptune 4 Pro, but the only western stuff I've printed is some track for a train I have.  The engine is actually 1/64 scale and more like a WW2 era so now I'm looking for a more 1800s type locomotive boiler to 3D print so I can swap it out on the chassis.

I'd like to see some figures based on the movie "Goin South".  I need more females in the mix, those you show look fine.

Nice work on the terrain - which clearly looks like you have an Arizona setting based on so many saguaro - though could sneak into a bit of California or New Mexico, or a lot of Mexico, see Sonoran desert maps.

The part of the west where stuff really happened does not look like Monument Valley where almost nothing actually happened.  A lot happened in Arizona.  So, no, not so sandy but lots and lots of cacti and plenty of mountains with places for mines.

Not sure about all these Women of the Old West with guns but to each their own.  Mostly would be women defending homesteads using guns.  But cool figures.  If you are doing a 'fantastic' Old West, you are good.  But if you want a little more 'historical' Old West, you need more men.  Seems the 'fantastic' is pretty popular of late, not fantasy, just flights of fancy sort of games.

Have fun with it.

Thanks guys!!

Thanks man! And yeah, the third pistol was a spontaneous idea, but I really liked how it looked. And more to come the following months!

The females by Great Escape Games are great. Best thing is they are HIPS, so very durable and a lot of options for poses and weapons.

Ah cool, Arizona sounds great. I've been in Arizona once in 1998 and I remember some old frontier towns we went too. Wish I could go back now!
And for the ladies and realism...I'm not one for historical or realistic games, I'm all for the fantastical and cinematic stuff. So it'll be spaghetti westerns, game westerns (Red Dead) or weird west for me. And there the ladies sure have a place :)

Lovely stuff! Always enjoy looking at what wild west things people come up with.

Yes indeed, it's a game, and about 99% of all the wild west games I've ever watched/ played have been the MYTHIC wild west. Where things are the way people THINK it was.

Who want's to play a game beset with cholera and typhus? Till your land for 16 turns through drought and floods? Fear every turn the bank will repossess your homestead? That was, as I understand it, more of the real wild west for a lot of people  ;).

As such, I welcome all sorts, females, migrants. The wild west is a BIG place and there's a place for everybody  lol

Ooh that mine looks fantastic, do like a cork bark rock face  :-*

I'd rather the 3:10 to yuma and red dead redemption vibe over a "you just failed your cholera check roll on turn 3" too Legionnaire. ;)

Keen for the next painted minis  :)
Cheers

A few unrelated (to each other) comments:

Your "Bill the Butcher" mini might be a relation (brother? cousin?) of the actual Bill the Butcher.

The character from Gangs of New York actually existed and was at least if not more so larger than life as the gent in the movie.  Of the many various gangs in the Five Points area, Bill was effectively the leader of the gangs that identified as White Anglo-Saxon Protestants and they fought against any that were not.  Their major opponent were those who were Catholic immigrants, most notably the Irish.  These were considered by the WASPs to be lesser beings and as such did not belong in the same area as Bill's gangs.  The leader of the Irish Catholic side was as big of a character as Bill, one John "Old Smoke" Morrissey

The history of Morrissey is part of the book "Paddy Whacked" by T. J. English

Which might also be of interest to Pulp, or any of the various "cops and robbers" wargaming.

Next is your three-gunned lady.  Historically, folks carrying two pistols did not do so to use two handed.  They were actually intended as an "instant reload" for when they emptied their first pistol.  Whether your lady is normally a two handed shooter or just wants to have an extra instant reload on hand, an extra never hurts.

I'm not aware of many ambidextrous shooters either  historically or portrayed in media.  Bill Hickock was one, Elfego Baca, and perhaps Bass Reeves are the only historicals of which I'm aware.  TV and movies, again AFAIK, offers the Lone Ranger, Wild Bill Hickock, Elfego Baca, Kevin Costner in Silverado.  I don't consider Doc in Tombstone when you see him shooting with both hands at the OK Corral as he traditionally used just his one sidearm.  More than happy to learn of others.

Though dangerous, the 6’4″ man was said to have been quite a gentleman around the ladies, who found his handsome face and sharp dress quite attractive. However, Dallas had a nasty temper, especially when intoxicated. Continuing to hone his shooting skills, he became equally accurate with both hands and always wore two guns.

Quote
Just three days later, he was involved in one of the most famous gunfights in Texas, the “Four Dead in Five Seconds” gunfight. On April 14, 1881, while Constable Krempkau was in Keating’s Saloon, one of the worst pestholes in El Paso, Texas, he got into an argument with ex-City Marshal George Campbell. Also in the saloon was one of Campbell’s friends, John Hale. Hale, who was drunk and unarmed, pulled one of Campbell’s two pistols, shouting, “George, I’ve got you covered!” Hale then shot Krempkau, who fell wounded against the saloon door. Realizing what he had done, Hale ran behind a post in front of the saloon just as Marshal Dallas Stoudenmire appeared with his pistols raised.

Bolding by me.  Documents his simultaneous use of both.

As for you possibly mis-remembering, I'm fond of a quote from a good if mostly unknown movie, "Sunset"

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096193/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096193/) which went something like:

"That's exactly how it happened...give or take a lie or two"

And though you'd never know it from the video preview, a major part of the movie is Tom Mix (Willis) and Wyatt Earp (Garner) solving a murder mystery.

More new stuff! First off, two more ladies. Once again HIPS models from Great Escape Games. They paint up so fast and are so much fun to do!

And I am also working on more scenery. First some bits I bought last Saturday and painted during the same weekend! That's always great.

Gibbet
(https://paintoholic.nl/images/1000/7514036/gibbet.jpg)
I saw this big chunky piece of pvc in a local game store and had to buy it. A perfect piece for my games and being pvc it's very rugged and easy to paint. It's only two parts, so both assembly and painting went very fast.

More rocks!
These are from the "Battlefield in a box" range from GF9 and I wanted to buy these for a long time. But never found any in stock here on mainland Europe. So when I saw it on a shelf in the game store, it was an instabuy. It is the Badlands version, so with a very dark base and very red stones. Wasn't a huge fan of that, so had to repaint them. But first I had to rebase two pieces...when I unpacked them from the box, both me and my daughter dropped one piece each, shattering their bases lol. But with some foamed pvc that was very easy. Then it was a matter of repainting them in sandy colours. Now they will fit in much better with the rest of my stuff!

Next up will be more ladies and some cactuses...cacti?

plural is: cacti, singular is: cactus.  :)

The gal in blue with the double barrel shotgun and blue dress and braids, she could be a "half-breed" helion - though no idea if that fits with your plans.

Glad to see more.

Here in the Old West we call them gallows or scaffolds rather than gibbets.  Not the normal sort you have there but it will work well enough.  And nice work on the repaint of those rocks - a paint job that will fit in many places.

Thanks lads! Time for more scenery.

First off, a derelict caboose. A cool mdf kit by Sarissa I got as a gift from a mate. Easy to assemble and fun to paint. I wanted it to look old and forgotten, so with faded and weathered paint. I first painted it in wooden tones, super easy. I then applied masking liquid with a sponge all over the areas I wanted to apply the faded paint to. After this dried I covered it with dark red paint and then with some light red paint (like a faded red). After this dried, I rubbed off the masking liquid (and parts of the red paint) with my fingers, giving me a caboose with some faded red paint on it. Exactly what I wanted. Not super realistic, as paint chips off differently in real life, but more than good enough for on the gaming table. And for the rusty parts I used the best stuff there is: Dirty Down rust.

And I wanted a loooooot more cacti (thanks FifteensAway :)). The sets by Pegasus Hobbies are perfect. You get two sprues filled with plastic cacti. Easy to assemble and painting was also a breeze. I airbrushed them with a military green primer from Vallejo, then coated one half with Militarum Green Contrast and the other half with Warp Lightning green Contrast. This was drybrushed with resp. Scale75 Fall Green and Foundry Bright Green 25C. Some fast painting on the bases and done! Love these things, especially as they will add more colour and variation to the final table.

Next up will be more ladies, a water mill, rock pillar and hill!

While the Sarissa train stuff is a bit of a mis-mash of Old West and European style equipment - and perhaps a limitation of the material used, your paint job is nothing short of fantastic.  I've seen old equipment around that looks very much like that.  I've been a model railroader since 1968 and seen lots and lots of old railroad stuff; lucky enough to live near some great railroad museums.

Love your new cacti.  And now I know for certain where the stuff I have came from - sadly bought at a sale of a late local gamer's collection but at least he wasn't young, 71 or 72 when he passed (a month from brain tumor diagnosis to death) and a spectacular modeler.  His Old West collection was simply the best Old West painted stuff I've ever seen anywhere - bar none and there is some stiff competition out there.  Alas, wrong scale and far too expensive for my wallet but worth every penny being asked for it.  Don't know where it landed but whoever got it owns a real treasure.

And more done!

Rock Spire, hill & Sarissa Wind mill
I made the rock spire from cork bark, some thick cardboard, foamed pvc and a lot of modelling compound. Easy and fast. And it has a nice height to it. The wind mill is a Sarissa Precision MDF kit. Easy to paint, but TERRRRRRRRIBLE to assemble. Probably the worst mdf kit I ever did. Urgh. So glad it's done! It's a nice set once finished and the mill can still spin. Weeee! And finally a corner hill. So I made it so it can fit in a corner of the table. Don't know why, but it looks nice :D

And finally I also finished my first Sheriff! An old Black Scorpion model. Quite flashy, but I like him.

Thanks man! Cacti are so much fun to paint :)

And I got some new stuff, which was a lot of fun to do. I asked in a different topic about shrubberies for the Old West and Malamute gave the awesome tip of using rubberised horsehair. So I ordered a slab from Etsy and started on some bushes:
1) I cut a base from foamed pvc, beveled it and covered it with sand.
2) Paint the base
3) Tear off some of the horsehair from the slab or horsehair
4) Glue it to the base with hot glue
DONE

Suuuuuuper easy to do and it looks fantastic on the table. Exactly what I wanted. Very happy with them. I might do another batch and flock them with a different green to add some variety.

Thanks man!

And another update, it has been a very productive weekend! This time a derelict church from Sarissa and a ACW house from Renedra. The plastic Renedra house was very easy to paint. Some drybrushing and a final wash on the roof and floorboards and done. Should work well as a simple farmhouse.
The church was a lot more work, but also a nice experiment. Like with the caboose I did previously I used masking fluid to get a worn and chipped paint look, which works well with an old abandoned church. I also really like how the whole church sits at an angle, as if it's about to collapse. Perfect for a ghost town.

Stellar stuff there! Very nicely painted all around, both terrain, buildings and minis. Thanks for showing off your efforts, much inspiration to be had here  :D.

More wild west stuff done in March! I finished 4 more female gunfighters (only 2 left from the box of 10), some scatter scenery and fencing (from Mantic's Vanguard Kickstarter), a repainted and rebased water tower from Ainsty and finally, an undertaker set from Umbum. So a lot more finished stuff added to the collection!

Scatter terrain
For the sign I added two town names I am using for my games: Snakerock and Oxville! The barricades are mostly for scenarios, they will be a bit out of place for regular games.

Fencing
PVC fences...they are nice, but it's a shame they have these typical dimples you see on plastic stuff. But still, you won't see that during gaming.

Water Tower
Bought around 2000 from Ainsty and used a lot for my Warmachine games. Now rebased for Dead Man's Hand!

Umbum Undertaker
Saw this for cheap on Amazon, a cardboard kit. You don't need glue for assembly and the scale is perfect for 28mm gaming. It's real fun to assemble and looks awesome once done. I did reinforce most of it with hot glue and then cut off the outer tabs so it will look less like cardboard. As a finishing touch I did the cardboard edges with felt markers and I covered up some spots with moss and turf. Really awesome building and I love the cemetery that comes with it. To conceal the cardboard earth around the fresh grave, I covered it with tile grout. This looks perfect as fresh earth.

These two also finish off the box of 10 I had:

Outlaw

4Ground Marshalls Office & General Store
Great buildings, although a bit of a hell to assemble. Especially the hinges are horribly fragile. But they look great once assembled, especially if you paint the burnt mdf edges.

Sarissa Precision house
Very simple building and also not the best in terms of details, but looks nice once finished.

Dead trees
I had some dried branches in my supplies, these seemed perfect to simulate some dead trees on the table.

Next up will be more men and I hope to start with a big 3D printed building I received from my mate soon!

Catching up.  A lot of very nice stuff on display.  Should be a highly respectable table when you toss it all together for a game.  The man with the sack hood should work perfect, a common disguise of the bad men and 'would-be' bad men of our Old West.

Any plans to add some feathered folk?  Or mounted ones?  Or wagons, coaches?  Certainly would be worth the while to add more men folk.  Also, some unarmed citizenry would add to the atmosphere.  Budget permitting, of course.

Looking forward to seeing your game reports.

(Water tank a bit 'out of place' but workable, more of an eastern style than anything I recall seeing in a western setting but easy enough to come up with a story to go with it.  You could, if the fancy takes you, add a train and track - and a station - to go with the water tank.)

Thanks lads!
@FifteensAway: yes, mostly men incoming now! I do have some more ladies, but most are for the civilians. I also have some individual horses ready, 6 more buildings for my town of Oxville or Snake Rock and 3 more buildings for my ghost town. And...two trains and railways primed and ready for paint! So a lot of cool stuff waiting for some paint :)
And yeah, the water tank is more a 'pulp' style water tank for in 1930s New York or something, but I am very practical when it gets down to using scenery I own. It looks close enough for me to like it on the table :)

And hopefully later this summer some actual games! I am also working on a rules set of my own to suit what I'm looking for. Needs a lot more work, but it's getting there.

It’s been ages since I painted anything for my old west project, but I got the itch again so it needed to be scratched! First off I painted two more models, a cool legend from Dead Man’s Hand (is it John Wayne?) and an old Mexican bandit I had in my stash for about 20 years. Always great to have these oldies painted.
And I also wanted to do a train station for my train & rails. It took me a while to find the right one, but in the end I found the one from Black Scorpion Miniatures. Unfortunately it was a tad too big for my printer’s print bed, so I had to cut it into two pieces and do some work to get it ready for printing. But the print went really well. The original 3d model comes with a nameplate for “Tombstone”, which is useless for me as my town is Snake Rock. So with the help of Tinkercad I made a new sign and the printer did the rest. Painting was straight forward, but I used an interesting colour for the primer. I used Vallejo’s “Parched Grass”, which is a bit greenish. At first I thought it looked really off but I went with it and the end result looks quite interesting. It’s a desaturated brown with hints of green.
I also wanted to do the interior, so I printed some furniture and used my inkjet to print some wallpaper and a carpet. This finishes off the piece nicely. A nice project to do and it didn’t even take that long :)

This is a really great thread - enjoyed reading through it.

The latest additions are cool - always good to see interiors of buildings - I've thought about the wall paper idea a few times, but never actually got around to it.

On some of the MDF buildings on earlier pages, adding a simple card strip along the roof line helps hide the angled join of the MDF, and only takes a few minutes to cut and add.

Thanks! It's mostly a combination of Contrast paints and fast highlights. I have been using this method for some years now and it lets me paint quickly and get a vibrant look I really like :)

haha! Never heard of that one, I'll put it on the list to watch. The miniature is an old one...but I can't remember who made it! I think a company like heartbreaker Hobbies or Harlequin Miniatures. But I can't remember which one it was.

Thanks! Wallpaper was an interesting one, while searching for wallpaper patterns that matched the 19th century, I found it wasn't used a lot commercially until the old west period was about over. Hmmmm...oh well, I think it just looks nice ;)
And for the MDF, good tip! The stuff is nice, but sometimes the mdf look is a bit meh. But sill, I got most of them for free, so I can't really complain.

Free is a good price!

MDF work pretty well for old west as it is representing wooden buildings. I find a few extra bits of cardboard or even MDF off-cuts work well to remove some of the flatness which helps the look.

If you don't mind my asking what exactly are "fast highlights" and how do you achieve that?

If you don't mind my asking what exactly are "fast highlights" and how do you achieve that?

My main tools for painting are:
1. Contrast paints. I really prefer Citadel's variant, especially the thick and gloopier ones. These have great depth and are easier to control.
2. Wet palette with acrylics. For these I prefer AK paint nowadays, although I use all sorts of brands. The great thing with the wet palette is you can easily thin paints and mix paints. This make it easier to get those fast highlights done.

I first coat about everything with Contrast paints, a good solid thick coat. This gives the shadow and main colour. Next I pick acrylics that are suitable for the colour to be highlighted and apply thin coats for strong highlights. Although I state "fast highlights", it varies a bit how many layers. By using thin layers you can sometimes do it with 1 coat and other times with 3 or 4. But they are easy to apply and dry fast. So I can do these very fast after one another to build up the light.
Finally, if the highlights are a bit too strong or stark I thin down the Contrast to a wash and then wash the whole colour with it. That helps to soften the highlights.
That's mainly it!

And a new update, one I had a lot of fun with!

I got this building from a mate, who printed it for his old west village. But he thought it was 10% too big, so wanted to print it again. Thus I could have it for free! How could I say no to such a wonderful offer.
The building is the Sheriff's office from the town of Valentine in the game Red Dead Redemption 2 (https://reddead.fandom.com/wiki/Valentine_Sheriff%27s_Office). But I already have such a building for my town! So I decided to turn this building into a bank. The cells made sense too for me as they would be ideal to house the safes to store money, gold, etc.
Painting the building was mostly straightforward with a lot of drybrushing. But for the inner walls I wanted something fancy. So I created wallpaper in Adobe Illustrator, printed it and glued it to all inner walls. That also gave some more colour to the whole thing. For the red bricks I used the method to first paint all bricks in one brick colour, then use two different colours to pick out individual bricks and finally use thinned wall filler to get the cement between the bricks. That last step is so simple, but gives such an awesome result. It really makes it feel like actual bricks. I also added some green moss with Dirty Down to give it a bit more colour.
Then it came down to furniture. I downloaded all kinds of free furniture files, printed them on my Bambu A1 mini and painted them. I used some printed stuff I got from my mate to decorate it further, adding more detail and bringing it more to life. Adding the poker cards to the table was a bit of a hassle, but I think it looks very cool.
So all in all quite some work for the building, but also a lot of fun to do. And I'm very happy with the end result.
