I found some time to paint again and decided to start a Necropolis28 campaign with a friend. 'The Narrator' by Westfalia Miniatures, sculpted by the mad genius Boris Szuster Wo?oszyn will be my leader.
Is it the smoothed paintjob? The OSL perfect? Nope, but I really like how it turned out. Usually I don't go for dark, moody stuff, but with skeletons it is the right choice I'd say.
The OSL for the glowing eyes and the candle was difficult and I repainted it a few times. At first I wanted spectral birds (thanks again for the tips). Didn't work out, so my wife had a great idea to add a candle with blue flame. Worked a treat and was easy to make out of styrene rod, greenstuff and gel medium.
So, what do I like:
- Cold blue bone colour works very well for this chap.
- Magenta eye glow contrasts nicely with the flame.
- OSL on the gravestone looks fairly convincing.
- Stippling technique on the skulls on the base worked exceptionally well.
What do I not like:
- Transitions could be smoother.
- The robe was difficult to define and keep dark at the same time.
- The little birds didn't come out as nicely as I envisioned.
-
A few more pics showing the back:

Wow, first time seeing this particular miniature but your painting and converting absolutely sells it for me! :-*
The OSL looks good without being too over the top and any issues with the birds or the definition of the cape do not translate through the pictures at all. Every painter is his/her own worst critic, and I'm absolutely guilty of that as well. In fact; most of the times I get really encouraging and positive reactions, while I'm barely satisfied with my painting myself.
Your work on this excellent mini is absolutely great though; I hope to see more of it :)
-
Thank you, much appreciated! Check out Westfalia Miniatures: https://www.westfaliaminiatures.com/ (https://www.westfaliaminiatures.com/) Honestly some of the most imaginative sculpts out there. Demented, innovative, grim, but also lighthearted and sometimes with a comic character to them. Love their stuff and will feature a few more in my gathering for Necropolis28.
I know what you mean. I guess I envisioned the robe differently, maybe more texture, I don't even know. The birds are tiny, so here I hoped to get more detail in, but really hard to accomplish. That said, I do like how it turned out and he shall lead my gathering to victory (I hope).

Fantastic 8)

Stunning model and absolutely outstanding paint. I keep looking at their models but end up not ordering due to the price point.

They are not cheap, but it is a one-man boutique venture, so I understand that they have to charge accordingly.
If you join one of their Kickstarter campaigns you get them at a discount. So far all have been fullfilled and quality was top notch. Another avenue is this Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/westfaiacabinetofcuriosities/posts (https://www.patreon.com/westfaiacabinetofcuriosities/posts)

Wow great job!
I shopped at Westfalia before and got great service by the way. And their figures have a lot of personality.
-
So glad to see necropolis28 getting some love on this board; majority of my hobbying has been around this game the past year or so.
Very cool figure and most excellent painting, fits the aesthetic perfectly. Hope to see more!
-
That is a drop dead stunning paint job, it turned out amazing!!! :-*

Nice work—very spooky!

Thank you! Absolutely. Kawe seems to be a great guy from his interaction with customers and fans.

It is a nice game for people with small kids. Only a few models are needed and not a whole table of terrain. Also a game is finished within an hour or even 30min. I am currently working on four more for my gathering and then some tokens to round it off.

Thank you kindly. I am glad you like it.
Nice work—very spooky!
Thanks! That was indeed the intent: Dark, moody, spooky.

Another undead champion joins my Gathering: Alaric the Fallen Freyr.
The miniature is - you guessed it - another Boris Woloszyn sculpt by Knightmare Miniatures. Unfortunately, you can only get him as a set outside the Kickstarter, but the other undead champions are also cool sculpts, so no great sacrifice.
This time I had this idea to feature a pentacle on the base that emanates a subtle magenta light, as if he is just conjured or imbued with necrotic energy.
The bronze armour was also a challenge, as I did not want to use any metallics, so I went for verdigris with some matte metal in protruding areas.
I am pleased how he came out, but I will consider getting some neon paints for future projects to push the glow a tad more.
C&C as always welcome.
-
Wonderful painting! Verdigris plus magenta light give a unique result, I love this color scheme. And I keep this idea for the future, thanks :)
-
I love the lighting effect on this miniature - amazing work. The verdigris has turned out nicely as well.
-
Your paint work is beautiful, OSL is generally overdone by most people and usually detracts from the overall affect in my opinion. Yours is perfect.

Damn these are just getting better and better. I like the Narrator a bit better for the sculpt, but Alaric is technically superior in execution.

Thank you. I think any combination of magenta and a blueish green or blue in general looks excellent.

Thank you. Always a challenge to attempt OSL, but I try to push myself with each new miniature.

Much obliged. I agree. I prefer it subtle and a tad more naturalistic.

I just recently came back to painting after about a year not doing much (young kids), so the Narrator was my comeback. I think I am getting the hang again. I think the Death Knight has an odd pose, but it works as being awakened after a long slumber.
Here is a group shot. Three more to go and the Gathering is complete.
-
More brilliant painting on that guy!
-

seconded. that's an amazing one!

Two gorgeous looking models. :-*
Any idea what the next three will be?

I love verdigris and try to feature it as often as possible.

Thank you. Yes, the next three will be a some of the more mundane Black Scorpion miniatures skeletal warriors. Excellent models. I do have more skeletons in the pipeline, but those would then be an addition to the Gathering or to show weapon swaps.
-
Really splendid work. The effects are nice and subtle on these characters. They also have a cool vibe.
-
Brilliant painting, especially Alaric.

Looking forward to seeing them! 8)

I got side tracked and took some pictures of an old 'Cloaker' miniature by Reaper, which they call the 'Cloak Fiend', sculpted by Bob Olley. Cyan and magenta are just very pleasing to the eye. I was inspired by Manta Rays and added some darker spots to give him a more organic look. I used mostly Kimera colours. They sure help with vibrancy due to being single pigment colours.
This thing is weird enough to join my Gathering, but the colour scheme doesn't necessarily match my skellies. So it may just be a diversion for now.
-
Fantastic! I love the colour choices, the whole thing looks very suitably alien and ethereal… thanks for sharing! :)
-
Awesome colours, I really like the glossy finish in the mouth and eyes too.
-
Simple sculpt, but painted very well without overdoing it.
-
I really like that. Fantastic Jon on the face and mouth, particularly.
-
Very nice addition and the paint certainly makes an otherwise plain model ping.
-
The tablecloth from hell!
Very nice and suitable painting. I think it does fit in with your undead though, if not directly in colour choice (which is great) but definitely in painting style and topic :)
-
Thank you all,
seems I am fairly productive these days.
Fantastic! I love the colour choices, the whole thing looks very suitably alien and ethereal… thanks for sharing! :)
That was indeed my goal, something a bit more fantastical than naturalistic. Nevertheless, with the spots I wanted to ground it in some form of realism.
Awesome colours, I really like the glossy finish in the mouth and eyes too.
Thank you. I used UV resin for this. Superior gloss compared to gloss varnish.
Simple sculpt, but painted very well without overdoing it.
Thank you. These days I enjoy simple sculpts much more than over-detailed offerings. A clear vision of the sculptor makes for a better miniature.
I really like that. Fantastic Jon on the face and mouth, particularly.
Thank you. The magenta or fleshy tone really adds to it I think.

You know, maybe I can field it as some form of necromantic experiment.

My wife explained that the cloaker is what you get if you forget to do your laundry. lol

Sounds about right. A horrific end.
I was productive (after a slight diversion into Blood Bowl Leprechauns) and finished three skeletons by Black Scorpion Miniatures. Those are one piece resin casts and have tons of character. Great opportunity to practice rust effects.
Here a group shot of my gathering, which is now, believe it or not, game ready. I have a few options in the pipeline, but I am ready to face my opponent.
Next up a second gathering featuring vampires.
-
Those skeletons are great, love the rust. They certainly flesh(!?) out your gathering and you've totally nailed the look of necropolis28.
Can't wait to see your blood gathering! Any special plans for a board to play on?
-
Lovely work on those skellies.
-
Great work! 💀
-
Wow! Beautiful work on those.
-
Gorgeous work as always :)

Thank you, they sure do. The grimdark is strong with those guys.
I was thinking of a Vampire castle and derelict church so far. My gaming buddy just puts the finishing touches to a modular generic dungeon board. So, I may go a more static, diorama route.
Lovely work on those skellies.
Thanks!

They look great, how do you achieve the rusty armour look?
-
They look great, how do you achieve the rusty armour look?
1. I started with a dark grey basecoat.
2. The next step was to mix some AK Interactive Dry Pigments (dark, reddish brown and a dark red) with matte medium. I stippled that on to get some texture going.
3. I followed up with stippling Kimera Orange mixed with Red Ochre on it, adding successive amounts of beige. It was a bit of a trial and error.
4. I also washed it all with Agrax Earthshade and then went back in with the orange tones.
5. To finish it off I edge highlighted weapons and armour to improve readability.
6. Last step was a AK Interactive Super Matte varnish.
-
Thanks, I'll give it a try
-
Buried alive? Not this guy. He decided to join the ranks of my Necropolis28 Vampire warband as a lowly thrall. This very dynamic mini by Loot Studios from the Vampires of Panshaw expansion demanded a less conventional base. Hope you like the idea. Still needs some refining, like adding textures and nails etc.
-
that is superb :-*
-
WoW! :-* :-* :-*
-
That is a fantastic build. With your paintwork it is going to look amazing.
-
That’s great ;D
-
Well I can’t wait to see this painted- incredible stuff! :-*
-
That's fookin' BRILLIANT.
-
Thank you all! Very motivating and I will keep at it.
-
Very cool idea!
-
Good Gravy that's dynamic! What wonderful execution (or possible reason of!) of that mini.
-
Fantastic
Makes you appreciate FEAR as a mechanic in games - I'd certainly be grateful for wearing brown trousers if that popped out in front of me.

Much obliged! Agreed, the miniature is made for this kind of display.

lol Absolutely.
After some more sessions of slight conversions and base building I can present "von Falkov's Menagerie".
For Necropolis28 this is a comparatively large gathering, but the critters are not that expensive points wise.
This gathering also combines all materials the hobby has to offer: 3D prints by Loot Studios, metal casts by Reaper and resin casts by Westfalia Miniatures.
For a more cohesive look I thought featuring fern and obelisks on the bases may help to give the impression of a an old cemetery as a unifying theme.
-
Very cool! Incredible work, can’t wait to see it painted :D
-
Outstanding work! :o
-
Those look fabulous. As others said, very dynamic. Every base tells a story…
-
Absolutely brilliant! As has already been said, I can't wait to see the pained results.
-
Wow! I just caught up with this project! That last team…great modelling, but going back through your thread, I can’t wait to see some paint on all of these! Your painting is soo atmospheric and I love your blending of subtle colours! :-* :-* :-*
-

I a hoping to speed up the painting process using an airbrush for basic shadows and highlights followed by oil washes. I think the skin would benefit from oils, too. Need to think about it.
Outstanding work! :o
Thank you!

I have some holiday scheduled in, so maybe I can get to the blood suckers.

Much obliged! I try to incorporate a certain number of colours on all team members for a cohesive look. For instance the blueish bone colour works quite well for this purpose. I do love magenta, too. Extremely versatile colour.
-
So far I made a skeletal Gathering, a vampiric pose and finally, some Zombies are in the works. I present my leader, Matthias the Savant.
"Rise! Rise!", his half rotten tongue formed the words, more of a guttural mutter. Slowly the corpse opened the coffin contorting his limbs. His eyes and tongue were long gone. But when you join Matthias' covenant you won't need eyes to see, as the liminal space between life and death cannot be witnessed that way. The priest's mouth formed a grotesque smile, lumps of flesh that once formed lips, showing too much blackened teeth. "Come, I have such sights to show you".
The Miniature is by Reaper, kinda oldschool. I removed his eyes and added a Mantic Zombie arms. The chap in the coffin is also a Mantic Zombie.
-
That's a great combo, should look really nice once it's painted up.
-
Very good, I like it a lot :)
-
I love it! Can’t wait to see it painted :-*

Thank you all. I will have an epic base-coating and airbrush session this weekend. Weather will be supposedly great.

I was not very successful on the painting front, but I got some games in on a great table built by my wargaming buddy Commissar Caos:
https://www.instagram.com/commissar_caos/ (https://www.instagram.com/commissar_caos/)
Great opportunity to take some atmospheric pictures of his superb terrain and various warbands that faced my gathering. Necropolis28 is really a fun game and I love how it handles advancement / campaign play. Not too complicated but enough potential to really improve your gathering.
-
Great pictures, and there are some very cool looking undead there!
I haven’t heard of Necropolis28 before, what’s it focus on? From the pictures it looks like an undead civil war, or a contest between necromancers to dominate the ruins.
-
It is indeed a skirmish game in a world where everything is undead (after an apocalyptic event). These gatherings now roam the crumbling world to unearth forgotten lore and treasures. I think of it as a world of spectres, half remembering their lives and just continuing their struggles as undead for eternity.
You need about 5 minis per side and some terrain. Games are around 1h, depending on scenario and banter.

Finally I found some time to paint up Von Falkov's Menagerie. I started with a Reaper Miniatures Werebat to test the colour scheme. Not entirely finished, but I will feature violet and Magenta heavily. I also made a start building a castle game board, however, the twist is that it is a red brick castle, so more northern German Gothic architecture. Test piece of the wall included.
C&C very welcome.

That test piece wall is spot on!! Very nice work.
-
I'd missed the game pictures until now: what an exceptional table. Your purple werebat is really striking too.
-
yep, that bat is tops, it's purple but doesn't feel purple... lol
-
Very kewl bat. ;D
-

Thank you. The mortar needs to be a bit darker, but overall I am happy with the pattern. All done in Fimo, which should make it very resilient.

Indeed, my buddy outdid himself. Fully modular as well.

Thanks. Vampires are always purple to me :P.

Much obliged! Oldie but golide by Julie Guthrie

Love the WIP bat, but the wall really takes the cake!
I'm located in the Netherlands, but here too this type of building is ubiquitous, and you really hit the mark there; please keep it up 8)
Can you share your techniques? Both in building and painting?
-

Certainly. As you can see, the whole thing was sculpted out of a single sheet of Fimo. I used a brick red and then darkened some of the stones and bricks with a chromatic black, mixing red and green. On the windows I used a beige. After this was all dry I added wall spackle and scraped it off again. A word of advise: Before you do this step, varnish the paint. I add some issues with paint rubbing off, but then I used a rather abrasive cotton cloth.
-
After a long hiatus I started on von Falkov's thralls.
I tried my hand at Vampiric skin and am quite pleased so far. Now I have to decide how to pain the cloth.

Fantastic! :o :-*

Thanks a lot. Motivating words to push on and through!
-
Lovely work on the skin tones. What paints did you use, as I was looking for a similar pale, slightly purplish tinged skin tone for my old school Dark Elves?
-
These days I use a mixture of Vallejo and Kimera colours. I applied a thin base coat of dark violet follows by a pale blue, some beige mixed in as well for the final highlights. Then I went back in with the brush. Darkening the shadows with violet and highlighting with some Vallejo London Grey mixed with a tiny bit of violet. For the final highlights I mixed in some white ink.
To modulate the colours bit I glazed the skin with green and magenta.
Hope that helps.
The idea was to use cold colours only, to have a nice contrast with the magenta. Same idea with this chap here:
-
Thanks for the paint description. It is very effective, though I doubt my brushwork would be as good as yours!
-
You are very welcome. Always happy to share techniques or colour schemes. I think I will post WIPs more frequently, keeps the motivation up. To this end another shot of von Falkov with some steel NMM. I think it works reasonably well.
-
That is a very appealing approach to vampiric skin tones! :-* It's much more complex than my own and therefore far more effective.
-
Ooooh. I do like that!!
-
Really great color palette and execution! Nice work!
-
Fantastic work. The sword is subtle enough not to dominate the figure, but is so smoothly done.
-
I think the leader of my gathering - Nikolai von Falkov, is finished. I am especially pleased how the wilted roses turned out.
I am also quite pleased about the steel NMM. I struggled a bit with the sword hilt, so will focus on improving brass NMM in the future. Overall a really cool miniature and great opportunity to work with a cold colour palette.
-
Wow, very, very nice.
-
That is some very impressive work! It definitely sets a mood.
-
He looks incredible! Your skill with utilizing light is amazing...
Mike Demana
-
Impressive as always! Are you on the Necropolis Discord perchance, I haven't seen your stuff on there.
-
Thank you all. I am not yet on the Discord, but thought about joining.
I continue with von Falkov's hound Regis. Have to correct the ears and obviously finish the base.
-
That is amazing
-
I'd recommend it if you're on the fence- it's a very welcoming place, and Peter is a lovely bloke. Discord aside, lovely work as per usual :D

Much appreciated!
Onwards we go with a WIP of one of von Falkov's little pets: the Werebat by Reaper Miniatures. The colours are based on the real-world Flying Fox. A few pages back the bat was still violet, but I found that too similar to the other vampires.
I also present an early WIP of my familiars: a bat swarm. I can't remember the manufacaturer, but I think it is OOP. Mounting them on the obelisk was an attempt to get away from branches and gravestones.
-
Love the werebat…I have the “same” reaper model on my paint tray…but with wooden coffin.
-
Great painting on some lovely figures. I really like your colour scheme - it is otherworldly

It is a great mini. The coffin will be used as scatter terrain or maybe adorn another miniature.

Thank you! I may reduce the saturation of the violet wings a tad, but otherworldly is definitely a good thing.
-
More great painting. I especially like how you have blended the browns and black/grey of the dog colours, that's very well done.
-
I’m a little late to the party here, but I love that werebat, lovely job.
