Title: tikitang's The Last War: the Angel of Morte
Post by: tikitang on December 21, 2023, 12:20:53 AM
I typically find myself much more keen to work on larger, unique pieces (such as a 200mm Martian tripod (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=143323.0)) than the regular 28mm troops I actually need to play the basic game...and so it is that once again I have selected one of the 'boss monsters' from The Last War as my next modelling project.

Behold, the Angel of Morte!

The inclusion of an angel in the game is based on the legend of the Angels of Mons (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_of_Mons).

The art and text in the rulebook encourages modellers to use what is now known in popular internet parlance as a 'Biblically Accurate Angel', i.e. an amalgamation of different types of powerful heavenly beings taken from various prophetic visions in different parts of the Bible (mostly from Ezekiel 1 and Isaiah 6).

However, during my previous wargaming project (collecting 54mm fantasy figures) I discovered that Tom Meier had made a 54mm 'archangel' (https://ralparthalegacy.com/cdn/shop/files/49-0362a1_1024x1024@2x.jpg) as part of his Thunderbolt Mountain range (now sold as part of Iron Wind Metal's Ral Partha Legacy range), which I loved and 100% knew I wanted for my 'Angel of Morte', and so I ordered one.

After assembling it, though, I felt like it needed a bit of 'Biblical' enhancement, so I added an extra two pairs of wings (taken from the backs of Grenadier Giant Eagles), a sword from Langley Models to replace the flimsy spear that originally came with the model, and a group of seven eyes which I have mounted on the shield. These are leftover 'lenses' from the Zinge Industries kit I bought to enhance my Martian tripod.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to paint this thing over the Christmas break!

That's a lot of wings. I guess it would work best as statuary.

Epic piece, and love the conversion!

Thanks!

Far from it! In the game it is a living super-being.

Thanks!

I was hoping to paint this over the Twelve Days of Christmas, but, alas, I am still waiting for some additional rocks and sand to arrive to complete the base. It won't arrive until early January as the seller I bought it from is on holiday.

The 100mm base I chose was designed to support Primaris Repulsor hover-tanks from Warhammer 40K, with a flat smooth centre (perfect for gluing the angel's rock base to), but which needs some more texture to finish it off.

Painting will probably commence in the second week of January, making this my first 2024 project.

How is TLW as a rules system? I’ve been thinking about giving it a go.

The main attraction to me is that it has been deliberately designed for solo play (in addition to co-op and versus). It also has a small table footprint (2' x 2') and low model count, both of which appeal to me greatly.

The rules are based on the combat system from the RPG Mörk Borg (which I love), but adapted for tabletop skirmishing with some extra bells and whistles.

All that said, I haven't actually played it yet, so will let you know once I have got started!
