Title: Black River Blues - A Fistful of Lead game. (28/10/24)
Post by: nozza_uk on January 05, 2024, 03:00:20 PM
Had our first game of 2024 last night. Decided to go back to the Old West and runthrough the scenarios in the 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead' scenario book. Picking the first scenario 'The Waterin' Hole' as the basis for the game. Hopefully kickstarting a bit of a campaign.

Whilst on a manhunt for the 'Bad Hombres' gang, Marshal Bill and his posse have stopped for some rest and a much needed meal. What the Marshal doesn't know is that the 'Bad Hombres' led by Ricardo are about to spring an ambush in the canyon.

If you want to know how the game went, then there's an AAR on the blog https://nozzawargaming.blogspot.com/2024/01/ambush-at-canyon-fistful-of-lead-game.html (https://nozzawargaming.blogspot.com/2024/01/ambush-at-canyon-fistful-of-lead-game.html).

Needless to say, there will be a sequel, but not before we rerun this scenario with a Star Wars vibe.

Doc:  "Dang it, Deputy.  You've been drinkin' again.  Here, drink this coffee".

Deputy:  "Thanks.  I feel much better now".

BANG

Deputy:  "Argh"

Oh well, that's how it goes.  Lovely report...sounds like it's time for the Marshall, or maybe Ricardo, or maybe both, to seek their revenge...

Another scenario from the 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead' scenario book. This time a variation of the 2nd scenario - "Jack's out back".

Marshal Bill and his posse take on Ricardo and 'The Bad Hombres' again.

Post by: nozza_uk on March 01, 2024, 02:38:48 PM
Managed to get another game of A Fistful of Lead in last night. This time the "Massacre at Briar's Bend" scenario from 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead'. No Marshal Bill and his Posse this time, as for this scenario, it was Native American Braves versus the US Cavalry.

Great looking set up Noz, and a very entertaining AAR!
We've chosen the same scenario for the next encounter of Captain Brittle's C Troop, with the Hostiles led by The Great Lame Beaver.

Another scenario from 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead' with the second of a three part linked scenario. At the end of the previous game, the 'Bad Hombres' had got away with the gold. All they needed to do now was get the gold safely away to their hideout. Unfortunately, the Natives, the Miners and now Marshal Bill and his posse are after the gold.

The last part of our 'Miners' trilogy.

Having rescued the gold in the last game, the Miners have holed up at a hideout for the night. They're not safe as the other three gangs are still after the gold.

Have to ask... have you watched the movie?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093509/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093509/)

Don't even remember it being in theaters.  If you watch it, you'll get a good story, some great characters, and some memorable lines. (Sid Hatfield: I've met Mr. Felts. I wouldn't piss on him if his heart was on fire)

The law in town Sheriff (IIRC) Sid Hatfield (David Strathairn) is from the Hatfield family known for their ongoing dust up with the McCoy family.  James Earl Jones is always a favorite, and this was the first time I saw Mary McDonnell in a film.

A little slow in parts, but I liked it.

Fun game report - but why is the posse (supposedly on the side of the law) running at the arrival of the cavalry?  Perhaps their 'law' is a bit shady and suspect?   ;)

We had it that they were trying to recover the gold for the mineowners, so was the gold stolen by the miners or were they entitled to it?  ;)

Marshal Bill and his posse against Ricardo and the 'Bad Hombres'.

That was interesting.  Chalk one up for Law and Order...or whatever pases for it on the Old West...

We had something similar to what happened to Carlos happen in one of our games of game of FFoL.  It involved outlaws and Indians attacking a farmstead.  Toward the end of the gunfight (which the farmsteaders ultimately won, kind of...), the farmstead family partiarch spent 3 or 4 turns following a wounded Indian around the cabin, calmly reloading his trusty buffalo gun and firing at the Indian as the Indian slowly failed recovery rolls and crawled away, before Ol' Pa finally killed the poor bugger...

Another scenario from 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead' scenario book. Marshal Pete and his trusty Deputies (Riley and Hank) have arrived in a sleepy cattle town, only to find that it's under the thumb of a wealthy cattleman and his corrupt sheriff.

The Marshal has called out the cattleman, who has sent 5 of his thugs to deal with the Marshal.

I’m glad you played a second game of the scenario. I’ve had people say a scenario sucked because it was one sided. But if they just played it again, they might get completely different results.
Of the multiple times we playtested this particular one, surprisingly the the smaller force won more times than not.

For the first game, the Marshal player decided to go with a 'shoot first' approach and paid the price very quickly.

For the second game, I took over the Marshal and went for a 'cover first' approach and the strategy paid dividends. The Thugs had to split up and got slowly taken out.

That's the magic of FFofL, it cannot be predicted!
I once had a squad of elite Fallshcirmjager wiped out by a motley bunch of Home Guard blokes. Only wounding one of the old duffers all fight. Dad's Army were commanded by a lady playing her first game!
Another time Tuco and hid kid brother, gleefully gunned down Marshal Twerpe, Dolores Trollope threw herself across his corpse. Drew the Marshal's six shooter, and dispatched both bandits with shots through the melon, in one move.
Only FFofL can do this!

A.  Good report, that last one.  The bit about replying it with a different result was spot on.

B.  "Scenarios That Suck" are really rare.  One-sided?  Yep!  But I'll play those in a heartbeat, and usually as the "weaker" side, just for the challenge.  And I agree with Harry.  The Fistful of Lead family of games is great, and very versatile!  As you can tell if you've read my various threads here, we play FFoL with a certain regularity....

Back after the summer break. Searching for the Fabled Treasure of Possum Gus, another scenario from 'For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead'. Also, gave me a chance to get my newly painted "Other Seven" figures on the table.

Back after another break - isn't it annoying when work gets in the way!  lol

We had a go at playing the Black River Blues scenario from For a Fistful More: Scenarios for Fistful of Lead'.

A somewhat bloody affair with some questionable decisions made by myself.

Wow!  Marshal Bill's gang took they guy back, and they still hold their hostage?  That's a win, in any book!
