The small village of Little Snoring on the Trickle River is about to get a wake up call in the first of our campaign games set during the German invasion of England of 1875.
Setting the scene:
The British will defend the village in an attempt to stop troops from the Prussian 1St Corps seizing the river crossing. The Prussians will arrive from the top left of the table with the British occupying the village and the Bridge.

The residents are blissfully unaware that their village Idyll will soon be rudely interrupted.

A hastily prepared barricade at the foot of the bridge gives an indication of what might be.

Members of the Illustrated London News including roving reporters Archibald Harris-Hampton and Jean Paul Biro together with renown photographers Harry "Flash" Bang-Whallop and Stanley Still arrive to record the events live for their readers.

The gentlemen of the press make way for the Dorking Volunteer Artillery Company and their 4pdr gun "Agnes".

Prussian units from the 5th Line Regiment appear in column on the road and in the adjacent fields.
They are ably suported by Jaeger skirmishers:
The First British unit to deploy are riflemen from the 31st Regiment of foot who are billeted in a nearby cottage, they take up a position behind a low wall.
They decide to take up a position even closer to the advancing Prussians. A decision which may later cost them, meanwhile the Guildford Cricketeers deploy adjacent to the gun, in Professor Henry Higgins Holiday House.

The Prussian infantry advance supported by rifle fire from the Jaegers.

The Prussians deploy into open order and quicken their pace. "Vorwart!" shouts the officer!
The British rifles begin to take casualties from both jaeger units which flank the main body of troops.
The jaegers continue to advance sniping at the British Riflemen.
They continue to press the attack...

What a gorgeous setup. This is one of those layouts that, after all is arranged and ready, I'd be almost reluctant to play an actual game on for fear of messing up the spectacle. Just wonderful!
-
Absolutely lovely. I particularly liked the reporters set up to record the battle.
-
They keep coming, shrugging off the rather ineffective British rifle fire.

The Guildford Cricketeers decide to enter the fray, but rather than concentrate their fire on the Prussian Regulars they begin a firefight with Jaegers on the left flank.
This allows the main Prussian Infantry units to press their attack on the rifle unit who quickly crumble from their combined musketry:
Meanwhile the 2nd Royal Surrey volunteers arrive on the bridge to support the gun:

But are they too late? ;)
-
Absolutely fantastic set up and visual display. I like all the local details given in the descriptions too.

Lovely work folks! Looks like a really good fun series of games!

I can only assume that James was playing the British. He'd probably still roll a one on a loaded D6.

Lovely :)

The Dorking Volunteer Artillery Company fire their first shot on the Prussian column as its turns the corner by the duck pond and heads up the main road towards the village:
Taking casualties the Prussians press on:
They make rapid progress:
On the bridge the 2nd Royal Surrey volunteers turn and start to fire on the jaegers who are engaged at long range with the Guildford Cricketers on their right flank:
Gathering momentum the majority of the Prussian force is advancing rapidly on the bridge meeting little or no resistance apart from the light gun which is largely ineffective in stopping the advance..
The climax of the battle approaches. ;)

With nothing in their way the left columm makes it way towards the bridge screened by hedges and fencing:
The casualties are mounting on the right hand column, but it absorbs the damage and moves closer...
Seeing the Guildford Cricketers engaged against their Jaeger friends the Prussians charge into their flank.
Somewhat surprised by the sudden appearance of the Prussians the Guildford Cricketers decide to run with the Prussians hot on their heels!
At this point things fall apart for the British, the gun team flees closely followed by the 2nd Royal Surrey Volunteers. The Illustrated London News team decide now is not the time to stay and take more photographs and they also run!

The rules are a modified version of Rebels and Patriots with changes made by Silent Invader here on LAF. (He is documenting his German invasion games on the Big Battles board.)

After the victory at Little Snoring the Prussian high command surprised the British did not put up much of a fight decide to press the attack and move imediately to seize the signal box and train track at Effingham Junction.
The British anticipating this attach have sent a company of regular troops from the 31st Regiment of foot to hold the position until relieved along with the remnants of the Guildford Cricketers and the Second Royal Surrey Regiment of Volunteers. The Dorking Volunteer artillery have managed to secure another light gun, this time a 4pdr to replace he one lost at Little Snoring...
The battle lines: The British to the left holding the level crossing and signal box.The Prussians advance from the right this time supported by a unit of hussars.
The Second Royal Surrey Volunteers and the 31st Regiment of foot guard the train line with a command unit adjacent and the Guildford Cricketers guarding the signal box.

Narrowly escaping capture hours earlier ILN reporters Archibald Harris-Hampton, Jean Paul Biro and photographer Stanley Still stand by to record the days events.
The Prussians waste no time in moving forward, the Jaegers take up a position behind a low stone wall and open fire on the British barricades, whilst in the distance the 3rd Brandenberg (Zieten) Hussars ride out on the flank.
Stanley Still and Jean paul Biro decide the church tower will provide a better vantage point to record the battle.
Being a dashing Hussar in a splendid red uniform does have its advantages, Miss Iona Trimbush the vicars daughter stops to say hello not realising these red coats are the enemy...!
To be continued... ;)

Beautiful!!! Cracking looking campaign tables, and VSF too! 10/10 :-* :-* :-*

Those hussars do look dashing indeed, no wonder the Vickers daughter poped out for a looksey.
Wonderful terrain Malamute it looks rather beautiful and seamless.

Thanks Bertie, although I cant take credit for the buildings and the railway they are the work of that twisted genius OSHIROmodels. The terrain boards are mine as are the walls and the bridge from the previous scenario. Trees and hedges from Debris of War.

The 31st regiment of foot open fire on the Prussians. This is the first time they have received disciplined volley fire from enemies who are their equal and the British regulars are equipped with better rifles having a longer range!
Nevertheless the Prussians begin the frontal assault confident in their martial prowess!
Both Prussian companies face withering volley after volley from the British, so the second Company seeks shelter in the church yard.
Meanwhile the Hussars ride around the church and attempt to cross the walls and hedges to attack from the right flank.
The battle rages on and for a minute the balance shifts in favour of the British as the Prussian infantry attack falters, one company is so shot up it breaks and flees, one of the two jaeger companies are killed to a man, although the remaining jaeger unit manages to take out the gun crew and temporarily forces the British regulars to retire......
TBC. ;)
-
Fantastic stuff.
Lovely AAR’s.
Lovely presentation.
Keep up the great work.
-
"force the regulars to retire " :o
Surely it was a strategic withdrawal ? ;) :)

Marvellous tale and splendid pictures.

The battle continues, the Prussian infantry now down to one company of infantry and one Jaeger unit dig in behind solid stone walls and begin a protracted firefight with the British regulars who are gradually being worn down.
The 3rd Brandenberg Hussars are yet to be tested and having flanked the British line launch a glorious charge along the railway line and hit the Guildford Cricketers who are defending the signal box.
Surprisingly the Cricketers put up a spirited defence, never has a white picket fence looked so daunting and the hussars are thrown back. But the Hussars weren't giving up, having won the next initiative they charged again. This time the Cricketers were overwhelmed and were declared all out.
Now the balance shifts back in favour of the Prussians, the British command terribly exposed, standing in the open, having just seen the gentleman cricketers put to the sword, lose the initiative again and are charged by the Hussars!
The remains of the 31st Regiment of foot and the 2nd Royal Surrey Volunteers turn to their flank to meet the threat posed by the Hussars:
But to their horror they witness their command cut down by expert sabre wielding horseman:
At this point the thin red line collapses and the remaining infantry retire leaving the field to the Prussians....
But what has become of Stanley Still and Jean Paul Biro stranded in the church tower?
No doubt their adventures and the fate of England will be determined soon... ;)

A mixture of Covid, a rainy Saturday afternoon and ladies’ tennis on the telly had me browsing boards I rarely frequent. I give thanks to that combination because I’ve found this topic! This is beyond wonderful - everything about it. Figures, scenery, background, scenario, description and report. I want more right now, please. :-* :-* :-*

I thought I'd already commented, but not finding same, allow me to correct the oversight. Just delightful!
Being half Brit and half German, I am divided as to results, though certain British command decisions mean questions will be asked...
As an aside from ignorance, would the place of the first battle properly be called Little Snoring-on-Trickle?
