Long term lurker on the forum, thought it time to make a contribution.
I have always want a SF shuttle which could carry more than half a dozen people and a few tea chests.
Found one on Etsy, but the delivered item fell well below par, so decided to have ago at my own.
The case this drill bit came in piqued my interest
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16238-040224162221-615621050.jpeg)
A bit of work with some styrene sheet turned it into a passable cockpit.
The wife working away for a few days meant I could create chaos in the back bedroom, her office, glue fumes were quite intense.
Hull core built, had a think about the exterior look of the shuttle and went with big wedge for overall shape.
Passenger module on port side with exits fore and aft. Cargo module on starboard capable of holding 6.1 metre (20 ft) ISO container or small vehicle.

After destroying several cereal boxes for templates, was able to get a decent fit for the upper parts of the shell.
Model will now probably fester for a few months, whilst I contemplate how much detail to put under the shell.
-
That's looking great :)
-
Welcome and a nice start
-
Good idea! :)
-
Thank you all.
Steadily adding bits to the shuttle, long way to go.

Most of the work cannot be seen from above, but should be visible low angle from across the table.

In a complete change of pace, for an SF staple, sculpted some mushrooms to add to terrain eventually

lol lol lol lol
In the rich world of fungi, who knows
Might be edible, might have lethal toxins, might be useful chemical source, the spores might clog your lungs. Worst of all they might be like Ophiocordyceps unilateralis the "Zombie Ant Fungus" (genuine article)

Sometimes the fiddly bits take an inordinate amount of time.
Cargo bay door now is hinged, latches to do next.
Intakes for the engines sorted, resin copies made. One spare in case Capt Co*kup comes to call. Knew that Metal Thunderhawk would come useful one day.

The structural skin is complete apart from the belly. Once that is done time for the cosmetic overlay and surface detail.
Quite pleased with the over all shape.

-
It's looking very promising.
-
Thank you.
I must admit it has been a long time since I did any scratch building and I am enjoying getting back into the groove again.
The piles of shame have had cobwebs on them for far too long.
For a model that would just be a background feature, I may be investing too much time and effort, we shall see.
First stage of adding wrinkles complete, time for a cuppa and then decide how far to take this.

"Piles of shame..." Not 'preaching to the choir' by half!
Honestly, the first piccie after the bit was removed revealed the cockpit, and I figured some grebbling and I would be seeing something like the Stargate Atlantis jumpers.
That this grows and grows is a good thing, given the progress you've making.
Keep shaming us false starters! ;)
Doug
-
Now that is a cool build there. :D I really like where this is going and how it goes.

Thank you all
"something like the Stargate Atlantis jumpers.

I must admit I had never heard of a puddle jumper before, mainly because - not having Sky- I never saw Stargate Atlantis.
Well the shuttle is now fully plated top & bottom - stands on its own undercarriage. It won't get any bigger, as I said at the start I wanted a shuttle that was capable of more than "half a dozen people and a few tea chests". So it is time to try painting, that means getting to grips with an airbrush, hmmm.
Bit of background fluff
Liason shuttle for orbital insertion /recovery and intra system journeys
Crew: 2
Passengers: standard seating 16, high density seating 24.
Cargo bay: capable of holding 6.1 metre (20 ft) ISO container or small vehicle.
Two dual occupancy airlocks, one fore, one aft
Standard life support. 54 man days
Cargo bay can be fitted with option modules for mission support.
So while I wait for the paints to arrive for the decided colour scheme, built a mission objective. A communications relay tower.

Great shuttle, and with the plating, it has a very definite Star Wars vibe! I'm very interested to see how it will look painted :)
Also; the cell-tower is looking really convincing too...
-
Great looking schuttle!
-
Thank you both.
Alas the usual curse strikes me.
I cant paint for toffee
I shall give it a good scrubbing with paint stripper and try again.
-
Finally put some paint on a model after two attempts. Confirms my suspicions I have a long way to go.
Close up pictures really show no mercy on painting, still it will help with corrections

a cool shuttle

outstanding ride you have there :-*

That's really good looking!! 8)
The colours look really well and the replaced panel gives it a worn and used look.
Now it's even more Star Wars looking though ;)

That's coming along a treat.
Panel lining, a couple of decals, weathering and your done.

I go MUCH further!
Would I try to sell it on eBay or Etsy? No.
Would I put it on the table? With pride!
Send me any future 'failures'.

I grew up with Chris Foss spaceships rather than Star Wars. But I can't take any credit for the colour scheme, that is just 1940 Luftwaffe (RLM 02 Green Grey & RLM 71 Dark Green over RLM 65 Light Blue, with RLM 04 Yellow identifiers).

Transfers have been selected and model has been varnished, ready for attempts to weather it.

Might be a bit ambitious, but certain elements of backwater Hadrian are on the cards to be built soon.
-
That's come out really well.

I like it 8)

Thank you both.
Painting on the shuttle continues at a snails pace, I find it hard to do. No doubt some of you can knock it out in a couple of hours.
Local gaming group had a scratch build something in twenty four hours competition. Had a go, predictably ran out of time, here it is.
The PDF or auxilia in the hinterlands of Hadrian need a long range vehicle for patrolling. So decided to build something akin to the South African Ratel.
Started off by having a root in the tyre tub to find some wheels.
Then started cutting styrene, doing measurements by pixel counting off pictures. This is as far as I got in the twenty four hours. Detailing still to do
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/62/16238-130324130037-62074952.jpeg)
Counts as a NOT Ratel as the tyres are slightly too big and the hull is four millimetres too tall. But it will do for second tier PDF in the back of beyond.
-
Nice APC!
-
Very cool!!!
-
Thank you both. I hope it serves the PDF well.
Amazing the difference a couple of hours work can do.
Predictably I put paint on a model it all goes Pete Tong. The red brown was too thin and bled under the blutack.
Still sheet styrene to paint on a model in four days is lightning fast for me. Learning point to try and make mixing colours more consistent.
Time for retouching.

Great little build 8)
-
Nice one ! :)
-
I know you based it on the Ratel but it reminds me of action forces, Z force transporter.
-
Thank you all. Currently stripped and in process of being repainted. I'll get the hang of it one day.
I know you based it on the Ratel but it reminds me of action forces, Z force transporter.
Not heard of that until now, it is very similar and I suspect had the same inspiration.
A little bit of fluff
Hadrian is what generally classified as a garden world. That conjures up images of verdant green vegetation and pleasant climate. In the coastal areas that is largely true, the hinterlands beyond the white mountains are less so, mostly arid. The major industries are production of foodstuffs and tourism & hunting for those with a large enough wallet.
Useful ores do exist - but not in sufficient quantities for the favoured bulk extraction by Imperial administration. Small amounts of heavy industry exist to support agriculture and fishing.
Small settlements do exist in the hinterland, one such is Greenhaven. The name promises much, but does not actually deliver as much. Usable timber is sparse, so mud brick is often used.
In the Sahelian Africa; Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Benin and Ghana. A variant known as Nubian vault is used, which requires no timber in its construction. So I decided to take some inspiration from these images

First thing was do something about the distinctive doors and windows. Made a few masters and from them some moulds
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/62/16238-220324212539-621732357.jpeg)
It did help I had some old resin from 2017 that needed disposing of (using), can't really be put in the bin.
-
Nice idea, I really like those windows.
-
Very cool windows and doors. The whole thread is impressive. It is always nice when you can get the most out of an old container of resin. Even better when it still works as advertised.
-
Thak you for the kind words

I am very lucky with my cellar, always dry the temperature stays between 7 and 12 Celsius all year round. Stuff just seems to last.
Well I have played with the Not Ratel for a while, it will do.
Put together a prototype building, all seems to work quite happy with it.

Instantly recognizable, yes :)
Still looks the part though ;)
-
Thank you both.
My APC model was basically an inspired by Ratel 90 (90mm gun), working by pixel counting from pictures.
The wheels used were 1.5mm too big and I raised the height of the vehicle overall by 4mm to give a little bulk for 40K
Found a company that 3D printed the Ratel 20 (20mm cannon) in 1/56 scale. Could not resist the temptation to do a comparison. Quite chuffed how close it matches
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/62/16238-300324200019-622181742.jpeg)
Greenhaven's landing facilities for shuttles etc could be politely described as sparse. A concrete pad and landing transponders, there is not even refuelling facilities. If a vessel has insufficient fuel to return to orbit, the crew has to stump up the funds for a tanker to come to the pad.
There is however 590, the servitor has been here for longer than most people can remember. If it has nothing better to do, it plays musical attachments moving them around the pad endlessly.

A nice setting piece.
-
Wow, what a nice forklift!
-
Thank you both.
590 could be a useful prop in many scenarios, especially with the servo skulls added to the skull docks.
Been exploring the Nubian vault concept and created five buildings so far in various forms.

Now to build some shops, street clutter and courtyard walls to add to the mix.
Quiet weekend, as the boss was away. So able to create mayhem with saws, knives glue and plastic.
Got asked to make a truck for a Necromunda game. Might have got a bit carried away with an inspired by Hydrema 912 build.

I did have a box of them, but I sold the majority of them to a guy in Australia. Think I now have just the one and components to build one or two more.
Jumping sideways, an American friend brought me a treasure from far away. Thank you very much.

Will keep me quiet on the modelling front for some time.
Company is called Battle Castings, all their product appear to be sold out at the moment. A series of resin castings, from a 3D printed master, the print seems to have had a lot of facets that will require smoothing out plus there is some mould slippage. This will be a slow burn project.
-
Ooh, that's very nice! :-*
It looks like it will nicely fit in with the old Armorcast Titans (of which I am lucky enough to own one), coming from the old Epic/Space Marine range.
I understand it's a 3D design; I'd love to get my dirty mitts on those STLs... ;)
-
I'd love to get my dirty mitts on those STLs... ;)
I think they are a none commercial STL, created solely for this model. Very low polygon count hence all the facets.
The model is made from a soft slightly flexible resin, survived a bounce test in a fall to the floor. I suspect the mould is end of life lots of slippage in the seams requiring a lot of sanding and filling. Also areas with extensive pitting in the components. Smoothing the facets requires a lot of patience. Still making slow progress.
Have magnetised the waist and weapon connections.
Some of the print facets are still visible in the legs, put some primer on them as they were getting grubby from handling. Long way to go.

In the spring for a reenactor everything goes a bit haywire. Clothes have shrunk over the winter, new projects need sewing. April tends to be rather hectic.
For example I sewed a flag in silk taffeta, with a great deal of muttering.
On the gaming front, sometimes one makes a decision that one comes to regret. I decided to make some courtyard walls with some "crinkle" to them. A lot harder to progress than I thought, most of the corner and junction pieces are done. Now just creating a number of straights and then of course painting them.
Having finally purchased a circle cutter for my Proxxon was able to make some progress on Market buildings. The advantage of using Nubian vault for inspiration is they have plans available that you can copy https://www.lavoutenubienne.org/bibliotheque-de-plans (https://www.lavoutenubienne.org/bibliotheque-de-plans)
Quite a bit of time consumed getting used to the circle cutter, but I am getting there.

Glad I'm not the only one with shrinking clothes lol

I think nearly all my friends suffer from shrinking moth attacks.
Plodding along making more and more walls, but nothing worth showing.
As a distraction there was a requirement for some kind of oil extraction facility. So i made a couple of small oil tanks, a gun separator tank, water tank and of course a nodding donkey. I much more of a modeller than a painter but I shall add the to the queue.
In breaking new there is obviously going to be something happening down at the landing field soon. An AdMech light security maniple has just turned up, quite a rare occurrence and always means trouble.
I found an old Epic scale Ork tank chassis, mounted it on a base then made a mould so I could replicate the shape by resin casting. Then using the servitor searchlight/speaker things from an Imperial Bastion created the upperworks for a tracked weapons servitor.
Quite happy with how these turned out.
-
This is all so cool!
-
Thank you.
I wish I was a better painter so I would feel better showing more of my models. But I have always been more of a stick styrene together sort of person together.
Spent most of June waiting on doctors and surgeons, playing is the knee bad enough for replacement game. So not much time spent on my own stuff, but did a couple of birthday presents for others that I will show.
Up to them how they will finish and paint them, I can get away with Munitorum grey undercoat.
Firstly, a Stalinets style tractor with garden shed cab for a Valhallan army. Made a couple of cargo sledges for it to tow, but forgot to photograph them, duh. The concrete mixer load on the trailer is mine, has been sitting undercoated for over ten years. It will be finished one day
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/62/16238-040724121808-62966719.jpeg)
Secondly, an AS90 inspired Basilisk for a Steel Legion army.
Owner has a couple of modular Chimera hull that units can just changed around. So I made a hull that will just slide / clip into a Chimera chassis, hence why there are no tracks on the vehicle I just glued up a chassis to get the sizing..
Eventually I will start posting properly on this forum.
Cheers
-
Those are excellent kitbashes and scratch builds. For some reason, the tractor and trailer are especially appealing to me.
-
I really like your scratchbuilt vehicles, great job on them!
-
Your sentry servitors are genius! Love them.

Thank you for the generous comments.
Another addition to gameboard clutter and plot devices - a galvanic bulldozer.

What a fantastic thread. A work of genius. There seems to be something different to learn from each one of your creations. Thank you for sharing.
-
I love the servitors and the tractor: really fun models.
-
Thank you very much.
The only credit for the tractor I can claim is putting a Soviet style wood winter cab on it.
I found inspiration for the tractor on an Instagram account Insta @kevlar_and_clank

Well the birthday boy liked his modular AS90 Basilisk, so I was asked to create some modules to make a multi role Chimera.
So first we have a Hellhound module
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-190724092847-631471788.jpeg)
Second is a Trojan module. A little bit of a gap, but tracks should hide that.
Finally a Salamander module
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-190724092847-63152320.jpeg)
Quiet few days ahead as the boss is away at conference, so I may try and finish some of my own models.
Keep on trudging along.
-
Great vehicles, I like the idea of the modules.
-
Thank you, yes the Chimera lends itself to modular builds. The rails in the rear hull easily accept slide in units. The top hatch can be used to locate elements on the front of hull.
Finally put some paint on some models, not the best, but it will do for me.

There were also a pair of Ambulls lurking.
Finally a piece of my history, think it is the oldest surviving figure I painted in my youth. A Jabberwock - base marked 1982 - I wanted to repaint this, but 48 hours in 99% isopropyl alcohol has not even touched the paint on the model. No idea what I used.
Will have to find something stronger to use.
-
I'm seeing a few of my favorite techniques in these pics.
Quick n Dirty Rust n Dust:
Spray paint the model a very dark brown, then lightly overspray with orange in a splotchy way for a dark, basic, heavy rust. This is also the basis of other techniques like chipped paint with chipping medium or hairspray, but is still pretty good even as a stand-alone.
GW typhus corrosion - almost instant grunge and instant good results
Dry brushing a dark metal color on the edges of the models where you'd normally find dings and scrapes. If the model is made of actual metal, paint it normally, then use a knife to scrape off the paint in a jagged way on the edges.
Get a small bottle of Americana colors Honey Brown. Add a little water and heavily wash the parts of the model that you'd see caked-on dust.
Ink washes go a long way in simulating oily stained places like tracks or where a metal panel meets another.
Use chalks for rust n dust for subtlety if you want to, but the above will carry you a long way in dirtying up your models.
Have fun.
-
Thank you for the suggestions.
I inherited a large number a large number of acrylic paints following the death of a neighbours father.
Very slowly starting to get to grips with them, there are number of tones for dust, mud, rust etc.

A treasure trove of old gaming minis there! They all look great, Jabberwock included. Have you heard of BioStrip? A bath in for a day or two could well do the trick.
Sorry for your neighbour.
-
Sorry 'bout your neighbors' pop.
For pure lead minis like that Jabberwock, good old acetone (nail polish remover) will remove that paint lickety-split, no s(fooling)t. Pine Sol cleaner will do the same. Let them soak overnight in a small glass container that will never see food again. Then use a toothbrush - or better yet, a denture brush - and clean that mess off. Wear safety goggles because you don't want those things spritzing into your eyes when you go to it with the brush. Been there, done that, it sucks. The rinse with water and let 'em dry.
Alcohol even at 91% isopropyl will simply not work. You could try denatured wood alcohol, but I don't like working with that stuff other than as airbrush thinner. Acetone fumes are also to be avoided.
Prime and start over.
These methods will absolutely NOT WORK with plastic or resin models. For those, I don't know what to tell ya. Maybe use the existing paint as a primer and just paint over it as best you can. They won't be as nice as they used to be, but maybe good enuf for gaming purposes.
-
Thank you for the suggestions.
The neighbour's father was a nice bloke, Alf got through Covid and was then got by "traditional" flu - a sad loss.
Because of my COPD I have to be careful what chemicals I use. Acetone is a bit too far, indeed I am amazed I get away with using isopropyl alcohol. Usually use green Dettol, which at least smells nice.
Frustratingly it is also why I can't have a resin 3D printer, the fumes trigger the lungs.

Previously I have scratchbuilt mostly military style lorries for various iterations of Guard armies
A sort of inspired by Oshkosh lorry
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-270724151648-632181681.jpeg)
An inspired by Canadian armoured cab Mercedes from Afghanistan lorry
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-270724151648-632252158.jpeg)
But now as I move into a more civilian / small skirmish sort of campaign, those kind of vehicles are a bit too chunky -so time to create a more rustic vehicle.
Sort of inspired by Russian lorries a small cab vehicle which can have all kind of bodies added onto the chassis.
When photographing white styrene I find that B&W pictures seem to give more detail. A sort of round cornered, pressed steel body sort of look. I create the main cab and then cut in the wheel wells. Next will be scribing in door and cab details, then moving on to figuring out the axle and chassis mounts. Then finally the best way to resin cast it so I can produce a number of them.
Keep on grinding on.
-
Great looking trucks!
How do you make those curved plasticard pieces?
-
Thank you.
I find a cylinder of the correct diameter, then cut a long strip of 10 or 20 thou plastic card. Then wrap it around the cylinder, gluing as I go, three or four times is usually enough. Does not take that long before the glue sets and you can slide or cut ring off the cylinder. I used the same principle to create the oil tanks posted earlier.

Nice idea, thanks!

That’s a brilliant idea, Merlon: I’m really enjoying your approach and seeing your modelling results. I would highly recommend Biostrip - it’s effective, reusable (you can decant a small tub and use it over and over) and non toxic (so should be more suitable for your use) - well worth investigating if you need to do any traditional DIY/household stripping as well.

Apologies for the delay in replying, been over in the Netherlands visiting friends.
Thank you for the suggestion of Biostrip, I shall try that.
Made some progress with the cab, have to be honest I am not liking the cab as much as I thought I would. So rather than cast it, I shall just build it as a one off vehicle.
Onwards

Biostrip ordered, there are plenty of candidates to experiment with.
So built up a chassis to go with the completed cab. Possibly adding in the prop shafts was a bit enthusiastic.
Put a basic drop side flat bed body on the back - can always find a use for one in scenarios.
Need to sort that cab top with some sprue goo, or maybe just paint it as a bad patch of rust.
-
I thought those tires were green stuff originally, was going to congratulate you on some bonkers crafting. But the truck looks nice. Even if the aesthetician isn't 100% what you'd like, it still looks good and at a lot of commercial vehicles have looks only their creators can love.

Very true there are some seriously ugly vehicles out there.
My sculpting skills could never reach the height of tyre treads. Over the years, I have collected a number of wheels from various kits for use in scratch build projects. Either from Ebay wrecks or model shop closure sales -tank transporter kits in particular yield large numbers of wheels. Some wheels where I have limited stocks, I recast for personal use.
-
Been a while.
Put some paint on the truck, be useful as a pickup truck or terrain in skirmish games.
Also built another vehicle to stick the table, a deck crane. Painting looks rough in the photo, not quite so bad in real life. Can always touch it up in due course.
Some months ago got involved in a competition at local games club. Make something out of crap models, so I took five Catachan figures and revamped them.
A Cutting / Welding servitor, two magnetised gun servitors, man digging the road and a vehicle refueller.
Of course I got derailed at the painting stage, but eventually I gritted my teeth and had a go.
A major player in the campaign is a Techpriest called HL210. First part of his entourage is two tech servitors, one carries a large technical readout that looks like a book.
Techpriests also mean servoskulls, so I have started on a small swarm.
Also as a bit of background activity I am slowly putting some colour on the knight I acquired.

Great progress, I love them all!
Thank you, I wish I could sculpt to your level. But I think I should stick to cutting plastic where my talent lies
Wanted to make some kind of crew bus for starport scenarios. A tiny vehicle means I wont waste as much if it goes wrong, I can always build bigger & better ones later
Technobus in Italy makes these electric micro buses for city use which fit the part. Drawing is from the ever useful https://www.the-blueprints.com/ (https://www.the-blueprints.com/)
Problem was how to do the multi curved windscreen on this type of vehicle. Inspiration came when holding a sauce bottle. After some searching, found one with the correct curvature. Pouring resin into the right part of the bottle, gives a shape with a double curve that will do for windscreens.
Though this does prove I need to get out more...
-
Well the principle of a resin windscreen appears to work, a bit more sanding and then onwards to cut the window wrap.
Not the best window wrap, not done one in thirty years. But it will do for now, after all this is a sort of proof of concept model. A bit of scribing improves the look.
Now to undercoat it and get ready for gaming on Tuesday.
-
Nice, that little chubby bus looks suitably futuristic.
-
very nice bus
-
Thank you both, they have been building them in Italy since the 1990s.
It fits many roles; scenario transport, street clutter, objective etc. Also it is only 90mm long -a full size single decker bus would be around 200mm long- so it will not "hog" the table.
Subject to finding suitable bottles, this proves I can scratch build all kinds of SF vehicles with big curved windows.
It is not a hero vehicle and it is needed for tonight, so this will do.

Looks nice, maybe needs some travel company logos and/or a line number.
Thank you, as I said this was a proof of concept model, needed in a rush. Fox Transfers do have nearly eight hundred bus related decals including lining options, so there is a chance of an upgrade in the future.
Now it is not unknown in Greenhaven for someone to walk in out of the bush to do the prophet thing. What is different is this one has already gained a few minders / followers. a Vae Victus priest backed by some Foundry monks, the latter have been sitting in an ice cream tub for decades.

So it is fitting to paint up a squad of Arbites for balance. Quite a dark colour scheme, might lighten it up

Many many years ago I bought the Silent Running robots Huey (02), Dewey (01), and Louie (03).
Sadly over the years I lost Louie, but the others can still play walk on parts. Don't think anyone makes them currently, a pity.

Nice work!
-
Thank you, compared to many of the contributors here, my skill is at the "keep inside the lines when painting" level.
I am more comfortable building things. Found these two friction toys on Amazon for a tenner - lovely big chunky tyres - some kind of heavy duty carrier beckons.

Proof of concept models for alien fauna, sort of "inspired by Joshua trees".
Twisted wire armature, two coats of matt medium and sawdust. Then paint and top with 2mm static grass.
Time about thirty minutes total, plus drying time after each episode of activity
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-011024122451-63859633.jpeg)
-
Those look great! A simple idea but the final pieces look quite plausible. Not necessarily alien, either, there are several kinds of actual desert plants (including the joshua trees you mentioned) that have a similar structure to those.
-
Those trees are great!! Well done.
-
Thank you both.
I was lead to believe that once one retired, all those hours you toiled each week would become your own to enjoy upon your hobbies. Alas, as always, that is not the case. Cracks in brickwork, sticking doors, making things for reenactors all combine to eat that time.
Still made a little progress was able to make a few more Joshua trees, learning how to streamline production. Have not properly based these yet, these are "stock" to add to any bases that need them. The eternal question of course, how many trees is enough?

The campaign I make stuff for will apparently have a mining camp required in November. So I wanted to make a look different from the Nubian Vault building previously made.
So I took inspiration from Axiom's Necromunda bulkhead buildings.
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=69196.1425
A sort of company storefront with vending machine

Other building will no doubt follow.

Love the building! The serving hatch gives it a lot of narrative potential.

Great kitbash of a building! Definitely looks the pieced together part!

Thank you both
Had a bit of a disaster last week, Commissar Bob (I know it is a Mordian Lieutenant) who often appears in my photos simply disappeared without trace.
A sort of sentimental figure, I did not paint him, he was given to me years ago by a friend who died in an RTA about two weeks later.
Luckily I was able to locate a copy of the figure on eBay. Not the best paint job, it will have to do for Bob II
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-191024191548-639682064.jpeg)
-
Sorry to hear that, mate. Replacement looks good, hopefully he reappears too
-
In my experience, things always reappear when you buy a replacement and remove the tag.
Hopefully Bob is just under the couch. Replacement looks good, though.
-
Thank you for the kind words, hopefully the original figure will turn up. Amazing how attached to a chunk of metal one can become.
So spent the end of October in the Netherlands, helping to build some 1/1 scale wargames terrain for De Slag Om Grolle. Trouble is the mind is far more capable than the body, I still ache. But I came home with lots of good memories
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/64/16238-101124110643-641881218.jpeg)
As previously stated my painting skills leave a lot to be desired, but I have managed to finish four buildings for Tuesdays game. Further tweaks of the painting will no doubt occur.
Firstly the company store, somewhere I have some cockpit decals to add to the vending machine on the side of the building.
A building which will represent the winding wheel over the shaft, it can also double as a gateway into a compound in the future. Next task is to scratchbuild some mine tracks into the shaft area.
A slightly upmarket hab unit, that might double as a shop.

Basic hab unit
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/64/16238-101124110611-64184442.jpeg)
As they are all built around old Necromunda bulkheads they stack together very well to make more complicated terrain. A very small area of a sub hive, might make a useful backdrop for future photographs.
Got another 28 bulkheads cheap in eBay auctions -under two pounds each- so more buildings may yet emerge.
Keep on buggering on.

Those look great...I like the effect they give of a futuristic but run-down town or city...

Thank you for the kind words, I need to do the models justice with a better paint job in due course.
My turn to host a game this month, a smaller game as some were down with snuffles and sneezes.
So the gist was that construction of a new building had disturbed some of the local wildlife, which now were using the building as their nest. The players had to deal with the creatures - "Just another bug hunt".
So first thing was to build a building that could pass for a building site or indeed one in heavy disrepair.
Nothing suggests a building site like a cement mixer, so I dutifully scratched one up. Just some more scatter terrain.
A more appropriate candidate for extreme weathering I cannot think of, basic undercoat to start.
The descriptions given in the briefing were of the juvenile rockworms, no mention of the adults was made. They came as a bit of a shock later on. There were random assigned points on the board where the tunnel exits were, a slightly more agressive version of spot the ferret.

More pieces of ground clutter for a shuttle bay, Greenhaven is not blessed with the best of facilities
Trailer is based on a Dutch multi function trailer. 400 Hz power, hydraulic function test, high pressure air for both test plus tool use. Finally an extendable light mast to keep the buggers (sorry engineers) working at night.
Of course some kind of vehicle to tow it was needed. So I made a rough terrain forklift to act as a tractor. Sort of based on the Steinbock vehicles used by the Swiss Army in the 70s and 80s.

So playing with milliput, old plastic packing, sawdust and wire, to see what alien plants can be like. For ninety minutes work, plus drying time, turned out not too bad. Learnt a lot doing them, later versions will be tidier

Spent the other day suffering death by courier delivery, So spent the afternoon with a small craft tray of bits. Amazing what you do with two Vicks nasal sticks and scrap plastic card. A low volume rare gas extraction plant, for an objective.

One tip I learnt a long time ago, when doing resin casts, always have other moulds available for the excess resin.

It's always a good tip that one, though it does mean I've got way more craters sat around than I need because that's the mould on the top of the pile. ;D

I try to avoid that, but I still have more doors, windows, wheels and fans than I will ever need.
Whilst watching Dr Who "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" over Christmas. I got the urge to start building some kind of Chinese style fastfood place for Greenhaven.
A sort of Ramen / Lamian cafe. Basically just some corrugated iron eaves on an adobe building. Real hodgepodge of media; Extruded foam, hard styrene, resin casts and lasercut mdf.

So I started this thread a year ago today, so totalled up what I have done.
One shuttle.
Eleven vehicles.
Eleven buildings
Eighteen trees.
Sundry scenic elements.
Basically enough stuff to make a six by three foot table quite busy.
55 figures built and painted, including the seven below.
I need to start padding out the population of Greenhaven and its surroundings.
Needed a fat old noble, together with a treasurer / seneschal.

Some lifeguard figures for the noble.

Never been to Land of Nippon, that long on a planes does not appeal to me. But the idea of anonymous food service seems so SF / Cyber, I wanted to build something a bit different for Greenhaven.
Added to the population of Greenhaven

Wanted to add some of the techmarine servitors from the early 2000s. Bought one of eBay - turned out to be a bad recast, so I shall create some more of my own using Catachan in due course.
-
Plodding on, making clutter for the table. Having found an interesting reflective tape on Amazon, made up a number of solar panels to grace the roofs in Greenhaven.
Also made up a number of pipe stacks from aluminium tent poles, most reenactors end up with a large number of old poles from obsolete tents.
Was going through all my old models to see what I could resurrect from my youth. Found a thud gun, which I always had a soft spot for. Problem being I had only one wheel, there are some on eBay for outrageous money. So I thought I would have a go at copying the one in my possession. Reasonably successful, unless dropped on the floor all will be fine once it has a coat of paint.

Great progress, I really like the ground crew!
Thank you. The ground crew came in a Colony 87 Kickstarter from Crooked Dice back in 2021(?).
Done a number of resin casts over the last months and as previously stated, it is always a good idea to have extra moulds available to deal with excess resin. One mould I use is for barrier wall blocks, quite a number have been accumulated over the years. So I started to build some sections of wall. This is a test section to see if I could figure a system for painting them.
Grey primer, then stipple with a dark grey, mid grey and finally a light grey seems to work.
Meanwhile the population for Greenhaven continues to grow.
A pie maker from the market, a jobbing welder, two Astropaths, an old staff colonel, last a woman in a big frock with sword and pistol.
Being "organised" I made a large dropper bottle up of the terrain colour I had mixed for the figure bases. Of course now that bottle has chosen to hide itself, plenty of choice words this morning. So either mix up a new batch or maybe be more sensible and choose a ready made colour and buy off the shelf.

One project I have on the back burner is the Greenhaven auxilia, the PDF.
Thirty years ago this would have been an aspiration for many Imperial guard players.
Here we see a large portion of the heavy weapons company of the Greenhaven auxilia. The mortar and missile teams exist in part, but Cadian mortar and missile teams were always like hens teeth. As yet I have not decided the colour scheme for the troop.

At one time a career in the Royal Engineers nearly beckoned, but a training injury meant it was not to be. But Hobarts Funnies and other military engineering have always interested me. Cyclops demolition vehicles have been unavailable for a while, so I decided to scratch build a variant. It does help to have an extensive bits box and a seemingly vast supply of Panzer I track links
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/65/16238-060425143133-656702096.jpeg)
A quick coat of bronze green will do for now. Decals will follow when I find something suitable.

Excellent work on the Cyclops', do we dare ask why you've so many track links?
Thank you. I have been a military modeller from time to time, probably have about five Panzer I's worth of 1/35 scale track links. Bought years ago in a model shop closing down sale, on the "it might come in useful one day" philosophy.

Great job on them!

So much great work on this thread
Missed this question.
The eternal question of course, how many trees is enough?
The eternal answer is that you build some more every year around the same time. I add to my forests every year around the Christmas break.
-
Thank you both for the kind words.
The quest for more vegetation and trees will continue.
So while tidying out a wardrobe. It appears I bought a Repressor from Forgeworld back in 2004, which -I have to be honest- came as a complete surprise to me.
Will come in useful for my Adeptus Arbites forces.
In due course will need to scratch build a heavy webber for Arbites use . Sorely tempted to figure out a blue and yellow Battenberg colour scheme.

Brilliant stuff, what a find - the small line of hard(er) sci-fi 40k stuff from that period of Forgeworld is excellent (especially compared to such awful creations as the flying 1’s & 2’s or the rhino with church organ hat lol ).

Wow - that's the kind of lucky find that I keep hoping to find amongst my wargaming figures.
Are you sure you don't have the kind of Narnia-like wardrobe that opens into a Forgeworld stockroom, by any chance? lol
-
Amazing find, it's always good to turn up something you've forgotten you had.
I do miss the days when Forgeworld produced all the conversion kits that just added to the modelling experience and expanded the background.
-
Love the kitbashing on the Cyclops mate. Enjoy the Repressor! I have def found projects I’ve forgotten I bought!
-
Thank you.
Yes, back in the day FW kits were definitely inspirational, only key point you had to buy in their early life before the moulds wore out.
Are you sure you don't have the kind of Narnia-like wardrobe that opens into a Forgeworld stockroom, by any chance? lol
Sadly not a Narnia capable wardrobe. But the box still contained the Techpriest, Inquisition purity seals & servo skulls and the Tarantula emplacement. I only wish I knew where the Sentinel Power lifter has gone to. Imperial Armour Volume two is sitting on the bookshelf with all the other volumes.
I made my own Tarantulas in resin some years ago, so I will probably sell the FW emplacement in due course. But the other bits will come in useful.
Had a play around in an art package and I think the Battenberg paint scheme for the Repressor has promise. Now whether my painting skills can deliver it is another matter.

That's a nice find! I took a decade break from the hobby and after coming back rediscovered stuff I didn't recall buying, like a penitent engine, but nothing as cool as that!
-
That proposed paint scheme is excellent - should definitely be done if you can.

The Battenburg seems a bit full on, have you considered having a bit of a border at the bottom, I'm sure current vehicles don't take the pattern all the way down, either way sunglasses needed, what are the rules for blind again?

Thank you

The blue and yellow in the image were the default colours in the art package, yes they are a bit "primary". The actual colours are likely to be a bit more restrained. On many police vehicles the door sill and below is not patterned. I was using the tracks as the equivalent. The image is basically the first concept so to speak, may change a bit.
I would have thought though, that Adeptus Arbites in a riot suppression vehicle would be the very definition of "full on".

That's true, their definition of crowd control is to make the crowd too dead to do anything. ;)

Such is the grimdark way...
I had a thought, my Arbites are borderline Rogue Trader era figures
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/63/16238-290924133545-638491801.jpeg)
So Maybe a Rogue Trader era Repressor might be more appropriate. A frantic scrabble through the bits boxes reveals almost enough components for three Rhinos. I shall a long think about this.
-
Yeah, I've got 5 of those, unpainted, in a bag - 3 shotguns, a grenade launcher and an arbiter in long coat and fancy helmet. Not sure what to do with mine though - is there much of a market for those figures?

Depends on how enthusiastic the buyer is on Ebay. Usually about £5-7 per figure, if you are lucky you might squeeze £12 a figure.
-
Very much a work in progress.
A Rogue Trader era Repressor with a 40K era Repressor behind it. Obviously lots of detailing left to do. But first I have to make an cap for over the top of the turret, fairing back into the main body. Sort of inspired by the arrangement on the Malcador tank.

Good job so far, I like the idea of making the turret recessed(not sure if that's the right term) like the Malcador.

Thank you, likewise I have no idea what the technical term would be.
So now mostly finished, only the exhausts to add, they were always notorious for breaking off. Had to restrain my self from adding clutter that would act as fuel for any petrol bomb or the like.

An Adeptus Arbites Repressor based on a Mk1b Rhino chassis, with Battenberg marking. Turned out to be not too garish.
I have never claimed to be a good painter, just a gamer. I am in no doubt many people could do a better job. Still took three dips in biostrip before I had something I could live with. That is why I left the FW Repressor well alone, safely stripping resin can be awkward.
For those who are not aware, in the UK Battenberg markings are used on many emergency service vehicles
Red and Yellow - Fire brigade
Green and yellow - Ambulance
Blue and yellow - Police

That looks like tidy work to me, the battenberg is a curious choisce for 40k arbites, but it's certainly eye catching.
May i suggest a raw umber/black oil wash to pick out all those details?

The Battenburg does look good, have you thought of putting some on the front of the hull or you had enough of painting it? :)

Battenberg tend to be applied in a seven block pattern, unfortunately most vehicles are too narrow to apply the pattern on the nose, which is why they apply different markings there. As the dozer blade is wide enough I applied the seven block pattern there instead. Likewise the imperial eagle on the rear door stymies the yellow and red chevrons that should be applied at the rear.

Built a couple of 28mm scale Romney Huts for skirmish games, they are more or less timeless.
Nissen huts are a different WWI design, though it tends to get used as the generic name, like biro and hoover.

Starting to work on the Greenhaven militia. I always loved the second edition Cadian infantry, so I have been gradually accumulating them from eBay. Wanted to do some conversions to break up the poses and confuse some of the collectors. Quite happy with how they went.
There is a cliché in many game scenarios, where players contract to steal something for a client.
Imagine their consternation when the five crates of electrical equipment, due to a mistake in translation, are a little heavier than they thought and security is getting closer....

Nice, the metal Cadians are still my favourite range from GW, I sculpt my own Guardsmen according to this design.
I also like the scenario idea of not just collecting stuff, but also acquireing some means of transporting them, I've seen too many scenarios where people just scurry away with half a ton of stuff on their backs :)
-
Nice job on the huts, and nice to see vintage metal Cadians!
-
Thank you for the kind words.
I also prefer the metal Cadians. The first generation figures have a lot of character and even after all this time I still notice new details on the figures. I have steadily accumulated over a hundred Cadian figures for the Greenhaven militia.
Just need to decide on a decent colour scheme for them.
The second generation Cadian had the benefit of ease of conversion, but had those awful pauldrons and big guns. The spare heavy weapons are useful for scratch building Tarantulas and bunkers weapon points.
Still the pauldrons can be carved off and be used for figures where I can justify a different uniform.
I have not bought a box of the third generation Cadian yet, the sprue images suggest they would be awkward to convert.
-
Some multimedia meddling, from within the great boxes of bits comes:-
An Empire Pistoleer horse sanded down to remove a lot of the horse furniture.
A pair of rider's legs I bought from Victoria Miniatures best part of ten years ago.
A Cadian gunner torso.
All balanced together. Now with a squinted eye and some new saddle bags and cases and a rifle in a scabbard - I might have a mounted scout.
Or am I more barking than usual.
-
I completely agree with your "2nd edition" Cadian love :) ... They were brilliant, as were the original Catachan Jungle Fighters.
It's good to see a K9 unit too :) .
Clever use of the Cadian gunner on the horse... it certainly suits the role.
Nice work :) .
-
Thank you for the kind words.
Slow progress on scout riders, due to a shortage of gunner torsos
Still shows promise, rather than wait on the vagaries eBay I think I make a mould and either press green stuff or do resin casts for the torso.

Whilst hunting around eBay, spotted a 1/50 scale excavator which took my fancy. Converts into a nice excavator servitor useful either for a tech priest retinue or scenic clutter
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/66/16238-270625201934-665632284.jpeg)
Still prevaricating on a colour scheme for the Greenhaven militia, tis the curse of being a far better modeller than painter. In the past I have swapped conversions for paint job, but I want to try and do Greenhaven all by myself
Keep on buggering on.

I like that excavator servitor, it's giving out some Mek-quake vibes, to me at least.

Idea for color scheme: Cadian 122nd
(https://wh40k-de.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/5/5a/122nd_Cadia_Squad.jpg)
Camouflage might be intimidating, but it "make" the whole mini, and allows to paint armour and weapon just black with edge highlights. Mini should still look finished and suitably detailed.
I would try something like this:
- black primer,
- all clothes painted with some light grey with good opacity,
- grey or bluish-grey wash over clothes,
- blue patches, no more than half of the area, very few black patches
- cleaning process with black
- details: skin, a little bit of metal, adding red on shoulderpad, or different color for different squads
Painting patches and then cleaning spoilage with black might take some time, but technically it should be pretty easy.
-
I really try to avoid painting black.on camouflage - when you look at black areas in contrast, the camo black is a less intense shade. I usually do a dark grey on the camo - it seems to work well and then I can keep the black for guns, equipment, etc.
-

Thank you, confession time I had never heard of Mek-quake before. 2000AD never really crossed my event horizon, probably heresy I know.
Manu Miniatures & Rick, thank you for the suggestions.
Two things to bear in mind
Those kinds of paint schemes are well above my pay grade and competence.
The Greenhaven militia are just that, not Cadian. Indeed as militia or tertiary level military forces they are a quartermaster's dream for off loading obsolescent uniforms and equipment prior to refits.
-
Great addition, I might steal the excavator idea :)
-

Feel free to take inspiration Siku do a range of 1/50 scale vehicles, the excavator is one of those - obtained from eBay.
So went on holiday and came back with a souvenir of ten days Covid, delights COPD Asthma. So spent the time trying to evolve a colour scheme for my Greenhaven Militia
The horse scout are a bit roughly finished, but they are gaming figures rather than Golden Demon. Pity I only had three horses in the junk box, may try to score some more from eBay.

Also did a half squad of infantry (repeatably, thank god for paint stripper) to figure a recipe of colours for future use. Further shading can be added in due course if I get to grips with the paint. A lot of skilled painters on this forum, I am not there by any means.

The uniform might look a little disjointed, but there are reasons for that:-
Following several incidents in the backlands, Lord Talisar had petitioned permission to raise militia forces.
Permission was granted almost immediately, but no equipment was forthcoming; despite further petitions.
The militia struggled on with private purchase and equipment acquired by many grey routes
Eighteen months later, a large dust cloud approached the tatty logistics base of the militia. From within two cargo ten haulers and trailers with four sealed containers of supplies emerged.
The drivers paperwork showed these were the long awaited supplies for the militia
The containers were lowered to the ground, receipts signed. After a brew and a bine, the vehicles departed once more into the dust.
Messages were sent to VIPS, rounds of back slapping ensued.
A wary veteran Sergeant decided to investigate further. Opening the latches and swinging the creaking doors open. The view was filled to the roof with paper or plastic wrapped bundles, a heady perfume of greases, oils and sundry preservatives filled the air.
Digging deeper into the piles of material, it became apparent there was indeed uniforms and equipment for some twelve hundred men. But the batch codes did not match. There was equipment from many units and theatres. A quartermaster somewhere had seized a golden opportunity to clear the dross from their stores, dumping it on a hapless third line unit.
The Sergeant swore "We are so going to be lynched tomorrow"

Obviously a line Sergeant, not a QM or Stores Sergeant; they tend to get far more creative, both with expletives and ways of dealing with a fubar.

I just put the underlying feeling. Being able to cuss for five minutes without repetition is a minimum skillset for most NCOs. Have witnessed the fallout from a number of store wars over the years, the wounds and grudges run deep.
-
I like them, especially the big trucks!
-
Thank you.
The big trucks were a project from about 2012(?) to create six, eight and ten wheel lorries and a combat support tanker for both scenario hooks and elements of terrain. Lots of PLS racks with water & fuel tank, generators, ISO containers etc etc - very useful.
Picture of the ten wheelers and some of the racks.

Lovely paint scheme! I don't ever recall seeing this colour combination on IG before, but I really like it - well done. :)
Thank you for the kind words. Some IG colour schemes are quite garish, I wanted a fairly bland mishmash of colours like many reserve units. I have memories of seeing TA units with a mix of 37, 44 and 58 pattern equipment and mixed uniforms back in the seventies.
Originally I desired a couple of squads of infantry to represent militia in games. That has gradually changed to be making the IG force I would have wanted back in the nineties when the Cadians first came out. So I have plodded on putting base colours on figures, never dreamt of having fourteen heavy weapons teams. Lascannon, missile and mortar teams to follow in due course.
Watched the classic film Them! (1954) yesterday. So I was inspired to make an alien bug nest, complete with boneyard. I am sure it will get used at some point. Also I was asked to knock up an objective marker of an open grave for Tuesday games, a bland grave should work for most games.
Finally completed a number of pieces of scatter terrain to fill out my skirmish table.

I said it before. Those trees are outstanding! Very nice work.
Thank you very much.
They are really very easy to make, thirty minutes a night through a week and you have a range of scenic clutter.
-Of course; you also need flock, matt medium, milliput from an old box that needed using up, paints, sawdust, soil from river bank, static grass, string and wire. But most gamers have that kind of stuff lying around.
-
Oh, I do like those trees! :-*
How did you make them, or did I miss that earlier in the thread?
-
Thank you
I briefly mentioned them back in October '24. Twisted wire armature, coated with matt medium, then covered in sawdust. Let dry for at least six hours, then a second coat of matt medium and sawdust, then after drying paint in suitable colours. Paint the tips in matt medium and apply 2mm static grass.
Time about thirty minutes total, plus drying time after each episode of activity
A reasonable approximation of Joshua trees - just something a bit different.
-
Thank you! I thought perhaps they might be pipe cleaners rolled in glue, then sand; but the sawdust technique is a good idea. :)
-
Thank you, yes sawdust is a very useful old school material.
I have a need for a backlands gang in Greenhaven. Remembered that way back in the day I had played Necromunda before my involvement in the campaign was derailed by a house move.
So dug out the Orlock gang I had abandoned in the cellar for nigh on thirty years, time and weight had not been kind to some of the figures. Snapping ankles on some of the plastic figures, managed to glue them back together.

Plus I might even use them in some Necromunda games as well.

Well the forum is back, huzzah.
Predation of livestock is going to play a part in club games in the future. I knew I had some livestock from a rustling game I ran at Sheffield Triples many, may years. Dug them out, but had not realised how garish Goblin Green bases were, although very 1995/6. So spent time refurbishing the figures to a slightly more modern standard.
