Title: Triffids - Anyone Make Them
Post by: Doug ex-em4 on 05 February 2024, 10:46:18 PM
Reading Day of the Triffids for the first time in about 60 years, I’m immediately thinking "I need some triffids." They could either form the centre of a scenario in my current Zona Alfa-based campaign or, more ambitiously, a complete Day of the Triffid campaign could be created.

So, does anyone make them? 28mm. Or maybe there’s some suitable aquarium plants that may serve?

Thanks

Doug

Irregular definitely do some, in their 25mm Science Fiction range. I'm sure I've seen some others too

Alternative Armies have a wide variety of plant creatures. Searching "plant" on their website will bring a lot of them up.  Pretty sure they include triffids.

I remember reading that book for the first time while babysitting a neighbor's kid. It was a really weird walk home at midnight.

Crooked Dice do an assortment of plant-based creatures and 'infected' humans:

Like you, I've considered using  them for a ZA or 'Day of the Triffids' game. Just too many things to do..... ::)

Thanks for the input, everyone. I’ve decided that an actual Day of the Triffids campaign is not practical,- for one thing, I’d need hundreds of the beasts which may be a bit pricey. However, I think triffids will make excellent encounters in my Zona Alfa games so I’ve ordered half a dozen - 3 each from CP and Crooked Dice.

Hopefully they’ll appear in an AAR here at some future point. First thing is to make some rules for them.

I haven’t read the blog post yet but I like the look of what you’ve done - proper intimidating….! I particularly like the way you’ve given them a dynamic pose as though they are on the move. Well done and thanks for sharing.

Well this thread inspired me to read the novel and watch the 1981 BBC mini series and I'm quite glad that I did. And now I would love to see some proper 28/32mm scale triffids. The ones by Crooked Dice are pretty great in terms of the stinger but it would be great to have some with their legs visible.

These are the ones I eventually bought. These don’t have legs but in the book they used their roots to move rather than legs, didn’t they?

If you stick to the original book and a 1950s setting you might not need hundreds of them.
I wrote a set of rules (with a 1950s setting) a few years ago, if I could remember where I put it you'd be welcome to give them a look

Per the name, they have three "legs" -- I don't know whether the legs also function as roots but they are certainly not the tendril-like roots we usually imagine, but rather chunky stubs.

Ultimately, triffids serve the same purpose as zombies in later media: they're an environmental hazard rendered dangerous in emergency conditions. I think just a few on a board would be ample. Despite being slow, their stalks and stingers lend to projecting a considerable swathe of threat. And taking the time and effort to neutralize one, while not terribly complicated in itself, can amount to a "plot complication" while other dangerous circumstances are afoot.

That’s how I imagine using them which is why I only got 6. They would be a possible hostile in, for example, Zona Alfa. I don’t plan on getting an army of them… :)

I have also been using them as a hazard in Zone Alfa.

In the book the Triffids are tall, thin, mobile carnivorous plants. The main body is a long stem with a spotted flower,.  Inside the stem and flower is a long stinger that flicks out to poison its victim, somehow the stinger seems to target the eyes blinding the victim as the poison takes effect. Though not specifically stated (from memory) some humans are more resistant that others.  Where the Triffid meets the ground is a "bulb" from which 3 mobile stumps protrude that allow them to walk at slow speeds.  Roots also grow from the bulb that suck the fluids from the victim as it rots and they may also pump in an accelerant to speed the decomposition.  Sticking out of its bulb are sharp spines that are used for communication.

the sting can reach about 12 feet, so a bit more of a threat than a zombie...

Great job on the not-NCR minis! A local Fallout Wasteland Warfare enthusiast started up a campaign at the flgs so I had him print me up the same minis. The print quality was ok. I’ve only painted up the three basic troopers so far, I went with a fallout 2 inspired look and gave them green armor.
