Build Something Competition 2024 'The Potato Cup'
This description has basically been copied from the 2023 post, which followed Vanvlak's 2022 post, etc. etc. It's turtles all the way down. We're just standing here admiring the view.
The theme for the BSC2024 is: WORKPLACE
General Rules
Please use this child board in the Workbench section to post your build threads.
Timelines (all times are midnight Pacific Standard Time of that day stated - yes my timezone means you get an extra 8 hours you lucky European sods)
- Start Time - March 1st
- Last Registration Day - Mar 8th
- Construction Completed - April 30th
- Painted Photos Due - May 7th
- Voting Begins - May 15th(ish)
To register, you need to do 2 things:
1. Please indicate interest in replies below. You will then be listed in the registration post. The list of entrants will be in order of which their intent has been posted. Please let me know if your username is wrong in my list.
2. Create a thread in this subforum
Please name your thread according to this pattern:
BSC2024 <member name> <build title> - for example, 'BSC2024 Burgundavia's Chocolate Factory', where ‘Burgundavia’ would be the user's forum name and "Chocolate Factory'' would be the object being built.
Other notes
- If you change your mind, if Real Life intrudes or if you realise after some contemplation the theme is not to your taste - just let me know and I shall remove your name.
- One entry per member (no joint contributions).
- Build threads should include lots of photos, but no substantial painting progress (priming and small details are allowed - you can blur for certainty)
- Keep in mind that the documentation of the build process has some impact on how people vote.
Completed Photos and Voting
The first entries must consist of either one photo OR a photo-montage of the finished piece. No photo manipulation will be allowed apart from cropping, white balance and contrast within reason. Again, if you are unsure then please ask. You may include one separate 'standard' figure in the final entry photo to indicate the relative size of the entry.
Photo size should be 1000x1000 pixels and sent as a jpeg to buildsomething2024@gmail.com
Depending on the number of entries, voting will take place in one or more group, and then, again depending of the number of entries, the top one or two entries of each group will advance to a final vote.
You will be allowed to enter new photos between rounds if you like. It has proven a good idea to keep interest up among voters.
For the last round you will be allowed to use your build in a "fully dramatized" setting, meaning placing the model on a game board surrounded with as many wargames miniatures you like.
A NOTE ON BIAS AND CONDUCT
I (Burgundavia) will, hopefully be entering a build myself. I have never finished a Build Something Competition, so doubt I'm going to be much competition. My brother, Wirelizard, is likely to enter as well, just to provide full disclosure.
While everyone is allowed, as per usual, to comment in progress threads, please keep things encouraging and constructive.
Although winners will be voted by the members collective of the LAF, if there is any sense of foul play the judges’ decision is final, although we would hope that it won't be necessary given the friendly nature of the LAF.
Theme Rules
The entry must include something that ties in with the theme of 'Workplace'.
You have to construct a model (scenery, a vehicle, anything else) which has something to do with, or depicts, a workplace. I very much appreciate that this can be very broad, but if you are uncertain whether your idea fits the bill correctly, pm me or post on the BSC thread to get a clarification.
One feature of the entries is that they should be practical gaming or scenery pieces, so no varnished walnut veneer bases or artful backdrops with LEDs and baroque or rococo trimmings.
Remember that the competition is run within the confines of the Workbench board: you have to build something. What singles out the Build Something Contest is that it is about construction of something new. The vast majority of the piece should be scratch built, and only 0-25% can be commercially bought items or figures, including commercially-created 3D printed pieces. The rest must be handmade. If you have any questions either ask them here or via pm, but please label your pm Build Something 2024.
Any period or setting is allowed as long as it fits with the theme including sci-fi, historical, pulp, fantasy etc.
Just like previous years, any amount of 3D printing is allowed but we ask you to be especially diligent in including images from design steps (3D design files) and of part printouts in the your progress thread.
Conversion of commercially-bought items is allowed also e.g. as long as it is a major 'refactoring'. Another example could be a plastic aeroplane kit: adding a couple of extra parts to the kit would not be sufficient to qualify, but having some of the parts from a sprue on an entirely new build would be fine. Again, if in doubt, please ask.
Lastly, purely functional parts of the build, just as the build or terrain tile it is built on do not count towards the above total of either commercially-produced parts or 3D printing. This includes things like the old Sally 4th Terraformer MDF tiles, 3D printed OpenLock tiles or cut foam hexagons. As with other notes, ask if you are at all in doubt.
It's not possible to cover all the eventualities, so please use your common sense and play fair. :D
Good luck, and happy building to all - and don't forget to REGISTER YOUR INTENT and START A THREAD.
Post any rules queries and comments as replies.
* The name 'The Potato Cup' comes from an early run of the competition where a number of items were offered to the winner, among them a raw unpeeled potato. The winner picked the potato. The name stuck. The prize does not exist, at least not until someone prints or builds a potato cup, whatever that is. Maybe it can be the theme for BSC20245...

So I'll be building something. I have a few ideas, all mad. I'm either going to be doing some sort of vertical mill thing for my hellscape terrain, or a spaceport for my scifi terrain. Either one will be built on a 12"x12" Open Lock tile
-
I'd like to play. I have yet to sort out the details, but it will be for my Paleo Diet: Eat or Be Eaten collection; probably a Shaman's work area ('though I might let the flint knapper have a corner). Nobody wants to see another off-white Biblical building!
-
I'll play, not 100% sure what yet.
-
I’ll at least try to start something, I have an idea that, but we’ll see how far I get, I’ll be on holidays half April so will need to finish way ahead of time, if I’m gonna enter anything. We’ll see how it goes.
-
Count me in, with either a medieval/fantasy style mill or winery as the goal.
-
Good show Burgundavia, thanks for giving me a nice rest! :D
It IS nice to take a back seat this year, but that means I HAVE to finish my entry this time - my thread is up, and it's a bad idea, as it is somewhat complicated, possibly.
I stickied this thread and unstuck the old BSCs to tidy up a bit.

Thanks for all your work over the years. Happy to take over organizing - is fun for a change.
-
Count me in please, provide my attention doesn't wander too far. I'll be aiming at doing something for Turnip28 so expect some filth, oh so much filth. ;D
-
I'm in, but not exactly sure what *with*.
Various ideas are burbling around in the brain but we'll see what I can manage.
It will probably be some sort of Weird Fantasy Thing as that appears to be my current asthetic direction.
Hmmm, architecturally impossible wizard's tower, possibly of a goblin or halfling wizzzzard so I can dial up the weird architecture even further?
-
I’m in again :D
-
Just a reminder that it is still 10pm on Feb 29th in my timezone, so can't start for another 2 hours! :D

Now March the first, in my timezone, but...
busy preparing for Hammerhead (Trade at Table) where I hope to get rid of a LOT of stuff.
Only got the last two sessions though. :-[ so, if you're going to be there please buy lots. :D
Will start after that, well thinking about it anyway. ;D
-
And we've begun! I'll start an entries thread later today
Good luck all!
-
Ah yeah. Forgot to report in here, so here we go: I'm in...
May the maddest builder win :D
-
I am in ;)
-
I am too.
-
And entries are (effectively) closed. There are 3 hours and 36 minutes left my time to enter, but I don't think we'll get anybody new at this point. Good luck all!
-
Are there any specific rules on basing?
Specifically, could I have one base with an armourer workshop and another with a farrier, and another with a carpenter?
This would be more practical for later use.
-
I'm pretty sure there has been more than one multi-based entry in past years. I know there has been one, coz I dun it!
-
I'm planning on 4 separate bases - building, tower, moveable pad and now adding a fuel tank, so go for it. And yes, there has been a winning entry with multiple bases.
-
I quote one message (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=134888.msg1713110#msg1713110) from the 2022 competition thread:
In the years prior to 2021, we limited to three bases - last year's competition, being difficult terrain, had a bit of a different nature, which was why Hammers rightly went up to six.
As the current topic is a more conventional one, I would return to the limit of three.
So it used to be "thou shalt count to three, no more, no less" (OK, less was allowed), then increased for 2021 as more scattered implementation made sense for the theme, then removed from the competition announcement but informally reverted back to three in 2022. I made such an entry myself back then. I don't think any explicit changes have been communicated since, thus three is still the latest convention we've seen, although I think it's nowadays a kind of agreement or recommendation to build some thing with a clear identity instead of a collection. I'm not in a position to rule how strictly it's enforced this year, though.
-
Well, I did six bases of grapevines plus there is the house, so I'm somewhat over the limit... lol
I'm ok with only three bases though, I will just put two grapevines on the entry pics. They will be very similar anyway.
-
As we didn't discuss it and didn't put it in the rules, I think keeping it open for this time is best, provided all the bases into the same workplace theme (you are building a single coherent something). Also, more bases and bigger things just mean more work and given the photo limitations, some of that hard work is going to go unseen.
-
I did have a different question - how do people feel about decals and other finishing details being shown in the creation process? I'm planning on doing some custom graffiti decals and want to show how I did them as I suspect others will be interested. I won't show the final on-model (as that comes after painting), but am going to need to do some testing first to figure out what works. Thoughts?
-
I would like to learn how you create transfers. I think it is both good and allowed to show the creative process.
-
I did them a couple of years back in my escape pod build and that was fine. So I'd say; go ahead!
-

I too would be interested. :)

I don't think this is a problem and I would be interested as well.

Half-way through! How are we feeling? Will the procrastinators amongst us like me have a flurry of activity in the bottom half of the competition?
-
I'm in trouble - I started off well enough, and have progress I have not photographed, but development of the tower was supposed to have been finished by the end of Easter recess, and I am nowhere near, got held up, distracted by my first wargame in ten years (!) and preparing some terrain for it, then a pile of stuff I had to deal with and now a bout of migraines.
-

I better had, done almost nothing towards it so far. lol

It's only a bit of fun! Do NOT panic. If it gets done, then fine. If ANYONE can't finish, it is not the end of the world.
So far I too have 'diverted off the true path'. (Painted a toy castle for a friend's nephew, finished stuff that was already on the bench & with my butterfly mind in full tilt gone all, 'Oh Shiney!' ;D)
I hope to put in a spurt of activity. Not a problem if I don't make it.
Oh must dash preparing to run a game tomorrow. lol lol lol
-

I am feeling good. I have built much more than I originally planned and I have started to colour it in.
-
and I have started to colour it in.
Teacher's Pet! lol lol lol
-
I think I'm doing fine, but I decided to go smallish (compared to some of my previous entries) and having a good guide for the build helps a lot. :)
I'm still behind with the fruit clusters though...
-
Half-way through! How are we feeling? Will the procrastinators amongst us like me have a flurry of activity in the bottom half of the competition?
I feel called out lol but I am confident that I'll finish the build in good time.
-
I'm being very public about my entry; I find it helps me staying focussed and motivated. So every little step of progress I post. Normally I'm not much of a blogger, but we're on a deadline here and it helps, so...
As for where I stand; the progress is visible for everyone, and it looks impressive, but I'm the only one who can compare that to what I have in mind. And in that light, I can safely say that I'm slowly falling behind schedule.
I had divided the project into three stages: the bare building, the detailing and the painting. Of the three I had assessed the building phase to take the longest and so far, that has proven correct (but then; I still have to start the other two, so what do I know ::) ).
And the building should have been completed just before Easter. Which it obviously hasn't. So now I'm hoping to complete the final building steps this weekend, so I can start on the detailing next week.
Fingers crossed I will be able to keep to this schedule, because otherwise the painting stage will be severely impacted...
-
I don't think I'll make it, I really should have finished my build last weekend, as I'm going on holidays in 2 weeks, but I'm nowhere near finished, if I push is I might be able to finish the build before I go, but the chances of a painted finished build are pretty slim. We'll see how we do this weekend, if I can at least finish the build there's a tiny chance I can slap some paint on it next weekend, but I think there's still too much to be done, and so far I've been making things up as I go along and there's still some parts I have no idea of how I want to finish them.
-
14 days. How are we feeling now that the crunch has hit?
-
14 days. How are we feeling now that the crunch has hit?
I'll get there, although it should be noted that I am putting in way less effort than everyone else.
-
I have fallen behind my ideal schedule in the last two weeks, but with the extra week for painting I will probably finish it in time.
-
The crunch is real...
I am now where I had wanted to be about two weeks ago, and I'm starting to feel the pressure. I'm sure I will be able to finish the build, but the painting is going to suffer, and after all of this effort I am loathe to do a slapdash job on this project now.
Also, there's the photography to keep in mind. The last time I entered, I lost out in the end for at least a part because of my lousy pictures, which did not show off my entry as well as they could have.
And I had been planning on making at least one or two hills or woods for this setting, so I would have a bit of an interesting background, but that's not going to happen either now.
Fingers crossed I'll make it, but at this point, I'd rather bow out than do a sloppy rush job towards the end... :?
-
We're ticking down to the final days and I see some awesome stuff getting done already. Just a reminder that there are two deadlines:
May 1st, Midnight PDT (-7 UTC): (EDIT: April 30th. I can read) all construction must be done. If you haven't done so, please post one last under construction shot in your thread
May 7th, Midnight PDT (-7 UTC): all photos must be submitted - wooden spoon award photos too (unfinished entries)
-
I will do my best to provide the final construction picture, but...
camera is not playing fair. :'(
Fingers crossed it can be persuaded to cough up the memory card.
-
I forgot to take a pic of the base coated house...
-
Is ok if you haven't taken one last picture - we have lots of in progress pictures.
I, on the other hand, am going to be building likely all the way up to the deadline as I had planned on Wednesday... (oops)
-
I'm continuing to take pictures like I did before the blackout and will upload them after the competition has concluded.
Documenting the whole journey as it were. I actually find it greatly motivates me to power through, even when things go not as planned or utterly sideways. Or when I start to lose attention and motivation.
It has kept me from painting miniatures for two months; so that time better mean something :D

I'm planning on posting my painting photos post competition. Sounds like you are too. Looking forward to it

Should you be keen and wish to send in your photos prior to the deadline, or wish to submit for the Wooden Spoon award, the email is buildsomething2024@gmail.com
-
It has occurred to me that i do not have a terrain mat to match the base of my model. Is blurring or other manipulation of the edges of the photos allowed?
-
I have used a greenscreen background before, but photofrickery is not allowed beyond that, plus colour balancing and cropping I believe.. ???
-
I have used a greenscreen background before
This sounds like black magic to me lol
..but photofrickery is not allowed beyond that, plus colour balancing and cropping I believe.. ???
Yeah, that's what I thought. No worries, It's just a challenge that I'll have a think about.
-
Could also go buy a few A3/11x17 pieces of paper and use them as a background
-
I have sent my picture in.
-
Could also go buy a few A3/11x17 pieces of paper and use them as a background
Thanks for the tip Burgundavia!
-
Just an update - because we didn't discuss it and I have an entry, here is how the initial grouping will work for photos: Each entry will be ranked based on the second gmail says it was received. Tie breaker will be the last set of digits of the sending IP address.
So the first entry has this:
Received: by 2002:ad4:4819:0:b0:6a0:ea06:c69b with SMTP id qd25csp838364qvb;
Sun, 5 May 2024 04:58:30 -0700 (PDT)
it was sent from this IP address:
XXX.XXX.XXX.121
Also, when I send my entry tomorrow, I will BCC all the other competitors received up until then, so you can all see I sent it before midnight (as I'm going to be racing against the clock realistically, as naturally is my style)
Hopefully this satisfies all to produce a fair competition.
-
My picture has been submitted.
-
My picture has been submitted.
Received!
-
I will send mine close to midnight as well... o_o
-
Mine is, or at least should be, on its way.
-
Picture sent.
I'm well chuffed with my entry, but the pictures are horrible and really don't do it justice. At all... :?
-
And received. Such is too often the way with pictures, sadly.
-
(Hopefully) my entry has been sent. :?
As I've said many times before, 'I don't do Elec-trickery very well'
-
I sent in my pics a moment ago.
-
As we tick down, we have entries already in from (in no particular order)
ragnar
tarnegol
has.been
mcmordain
burgundavia
Daeothar
Mick in Switzerland
As more out there?
-
7 is an odd number to set up the heats.
I suggest one group of 3 and one group of 4 in the first round with the top two from each heat going through to the next round.
Then you could either have A) a final with 4 entrants, or B) two groups of two to make a semi final and 2 in the final.
-
You could do one group of 7, top three go through to the final.
failing that I would like Mick's suggestion.
Either way I get into the Semi-Final! lol lol lol
-
I fine with any kind of grouping. Choosing will be hard anyway lol
-
Ya, 7 does not go easily into 2 to create a final. How about this:
Group 1: 4 entries, top 2 advance
Group 2: 3 entries, top 2 advance
Semi-final 1: winner of Group 1, 2nd place Group 2
Semi final 2: winner of Group 2, 2nd place Group 1
And then through usual final with the two winners
-
I'm quite content with whatever you decide. I'm perfectly happy with 7th place, so fourth in my group is a bonus!
-
Could also do a group of 7, top 4 advance, where 1st and 3rd face each other and then 2nd and 4th.
Note , I haven't looked at how the randomization would place people including myself yet, very deliberately so as not to bias this conversation
-
I like that idea too
-
I have prepped all the photos, figured out the order people will be sorted in. Voting starts tomorrow morning my time (afternoon Europe time)!
-
Looking forward to it, & I know I'll be in the top seven! :D
-
I would like to post some more detailed pictures of my build.
Can I do that now or should I wait until voting has finished on 29th May?
-

Can I do that now or should I wait until voting has finished on 29th May?
In past years, if you were knocked out you could post on your thread. If not then you were allowed to post more in the next heat.
-
OK - I will follow that rule then.
-
I would like to post some more detailed pictures of my build.
Can I do that now or should I wait until voting has finished on 29th May?
If you're still in contention, got to wait until you're knocked out or the competition is finished.
-
Ok, formally announcing the next round:
1st - Daeothar
vs
3rd - Has.Been
2nd - McMordain
vs
4th - Mick in Switzerland
New pictures are due Tuesday, 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time. Voting will open Wednesday morning, PDT.
Congrats to Ragnar and Tarnegol for their entries - they were awesome and your gaming tables will be better for them.
-
Congratulations people!
Also, congrats to Burgundavia for his build (which was brilliant) and for running a successful comp.
Amazing builds by all.
Thanks.
-
Yes; all builds are amazing and congratulations to all other entrants for finishing in time to participate. There may have been less entries than before, but they're all excellent and well worth the effort 8) :)
-
Congratulations to Burgundavia, Ragnar and Tarnegol for completing their builds to be in the top 7.
All three are worthy builds that will add interest to a wargame.
-
Round 2 picture sent... :)
-
Uh, I almost missed this lol I never got to the second round before...
I will send in a new picture tomorrow.
And congratulations to Burgundavia, Ragnar and Tarnegol. I would be happy to have any of those on my table :)

Ditto. :-I
-
Glad you both saw it. I have Mick and Daeothar's pictures already.
-
Sorry, a bit slow in responding. Well done to those proceeding, and a mixture of well done and hard luck to those who aren't. Mostly thanks to all of you being complementary about mine, and most of all, many thanks to Burgundavia for organising.
-
Sent in a new(ish) photo montage.
Though there isn't much small detail on my build which warrant a closer look. I think it looks better together as whole :)
-
Picture(s) sent.
-
A bit delayed with other things yesterday, so round 2 will go up tomorrow morning my time
-
And the semi-finals are done! Congras to Has.Been and McMordain for their fantastic entries. To Mick in Switzerland and Daeothar, one last battle awaits. As with previous rounds, you can submit new pictures, this time with the scenery being used in game if wanted.
Deadline for new photos is one week from now - June 12th at 11:59 PDT. Voting will start when I get both photos or June 14th, if they come in right on the deadline.
-
Well done chaps!
-
Congrats for the winners. The final round will be impossible for me to choose o_o
-
Final round picture sent.

I've had a slew of real life stuff intervening, but I'm hoping to take mine either tomorrow or monday evening...

Congrats to the finalists. Very difficult to choose.

No problem, real life is allowed to intervene (sadly).

And the final vote is live! Thanks to all that participated and all the amazing entries. Twas fun.
-
And thanks for all your hard work Burgundavia.
-
And thanks for all your hard work Burgundavia.
Seconded! :)
-
Congrats to Daeothar for the narrowest of victories, but a victory nonetheless. Also to Mick for keeping him honest in the final round!
That was fun and not much work - happy to do it. And now I've got lots of incentive to not only finish but do something better next time!
-
Congratulations to Daeothar. A close fight and great competitor.
-
Many thanks, guys!
It's been quite a ride, and Mick's been an awesome opponent :)
-
Great comp, and well done Daeothar for the win!
-
Congratulations Daeothar, and everyone who entered, the quality of the entries was stellar across the board, and each and every one of them would have been worthy winner any other time, but I'm not surprised Daeothar and Mick came up on top both great entries with an eye for detail. Thanks to everyone involved and Burgundia for organizing.
-
This was a really good BSC with a nail biting finish :)
Many thanks to Burgundavia for organizing and all the participants for making it awesome. I had a great time and can't wait for next years BSC :D
-
Congratulaions to everyone involved; you have all nice looking terrain on your tables! I'd like to see the extra WIP (painting) photo's in the threads now the competition is over and it's allowed.
