Title: My 2024 Bought vs Painted
Post by: gmanrocks on March 05, 2024, 05:35:57 PM
Last year my mini pile of shame felt massively overwhelming to the point it was making me miserable thinking of tackling it!

This year I've decided to log my painted vs bought minis with the hopes that I can make a substantial dent in the pile!

The idea is to just grab whatever I fancy (and a few bogey minis I just can't seem to get past) and make it look as serviceable as I can. Nothing fancy, just good old fashion tabletop quality so I can actually game with them.

Here's my start - 0 minis bought v 52 mins painted & 6 terrain pieces painted.

Well done.
I have been trying to reduce my own Lead Mountain (range).
A lot, & I MEAN a LOT, has been sold on or given away, yet friends look at my room & say
things like, 'I'm not being funny but what HAVE you gotten rid of?'

I have increased my rate of painting while reducing the amounts I buy, see my thread.

You're thread's great! Fab minis. I also sold a bunch of minis I knew I was never going to use. Certainly helped lighten the pile!

Yep, those are from Conan.

I spent the last year a tad like has.been, assaulting the lead pile like a man possessed. Near Crimbo I realised I hadn't played with any of the toys, akk year!
I'll never make that mistake again.

Oh no! I'm lucky that i've recently started a new job which allows me to paint during the week and game on the weekend. Hopefully with painted minis!

My painted miniatures is about to hit my year goal in just shy of two months...but I also bought quite a few miniatures for a "new" project, so my overall plastic mountain has not decreased a ton.  I have made a lot of progress generally though with reducing purchases vs. painted.

2024 so far...

As detailed in other threads I really purged the lead mountain a few years ago. My painting has been sporadic for a few reasons but thanks to my improving health I have painted more this year than in quite awhile. I have been posting pics here:
https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=144295.msg1841841#msg1841841

By chance I have purchased nothing this year but no promises in that regard for the future.  lol

gamanrocks, a sound strategy to my mind. I've been following that formula for the past 8 years. I can't say my lead pile has been reduced by much, and I would never count the unpainted, but I have painted about 450 more than I've bought. It seems every year something new comes along to entice me into a new project or add to an older one.

BTW that's some very good "serviceable" painting.

Thanks folks.

Everyone's projects are looking great! Nice to see others who are in the same boat and coming up with ways to keep on top of their lead piles!

With March coming to an end, here's this month's efforts from me (with some badly photographed pics!)

I've had some of those for years so it's great to finally have them done!

With that done, I'm looking at 10 minis bought v 77 mins painted & 11 terrain pieces painted.

Surprisingly I am over 100 minis painted at the moment!

All that I have left in my queue is the Heroquest boxed set, but I doubt that will last the rest of the year.  My FLGS started to get some of the expansions, but I can't get any of the expansions until I have the core box painted up.  I have standards.   lol

I'm at a good number painted this year, 79!, with very few bought. I think I'm having my best bough to painted ratio quarter ever. I'm on track to kill my annual goals early: https://wyrdstonesandtacklezones.com/2024-goals/

Newly painted minis/terrain Since Jan 1st:

Thanks. it's MANTA Ray 5 from Crooked Dice.

Great work folks. I love the painted Heroquest minis. I made the decision not to paint them but I keep seeing the odd one and think I should.

Lovely photos too Mr White. Great back drops!

I've had a trapped nerve in my shoulder which put me on the bench for a part of this month so didn't get as much as I'd like, but here's April's offering from me:

Great army! I've always loved the Battle Masters minis and the mono-pose plastics from around the mid 90s.

With May coming to an end, and not having the health problems I had last month, I've been working a bit more productively this month. This is May's efforts. A some what insecty theme!

Great progress you have been making.  I hope your shoulder feels better.

I am up to 175 "models" this year ranging from 28mm figs, to 6mm units, to furniture, and board game pieces.  I have finished Ancients, Fantasy, Pulp, and Sci-fi minis for a variety of games.  Pretty productive year for me so far!

That's a 3D printed mini I got off eBay. I think just searched 28mm school bus should find it.

I have done very little this month, I just haven't found much energy to do much painting. Although I did get a game of 7TV in, but here is my efforts:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi87Kz0HqMRsd_dP_4D1PsdXdksHyQPyO4-ub8jXH04cPFPhM_pE-64Xf3JGGP3EtRbRwIYdQB0_tVD2WcwkgWYoVDneRWaIS9RcL1OEkWNidggbMl5c0NE9qwsueVkHnao7xGDRmW4hiQaggx6tBLDplOl4q_86LJodrgAhoXK4WJByrsEY0CaHjIxEPej/s1632/Empire%20Army%20(3).jpg)

While not as large as the Chaos force...the whole project nearly broke me.  Now I'm onto other more secret stuff...

Nice work everyone.  We are at the midway point of the year!

I am around 175 painted minis/bases mostly 6mm and 28mm.  However, I do have my next two projects for painting lined up, so have a small "To Do" pile by this time next year.

- Some Persian Chariots and Infantry (About 3 chariots and 20 infantry) for an existing force
- Anglo-Saxon force (about 60 models)

Threw my nice ratio of 170 painted to 20 purchased (28mm) out the window by starting an ACW project.  Purchased the Warlord Games Epic ACW Gettysburg plus a few odds and ends - 2200 approximately 13 mm figures & a few buildings. Definitely will keep me busy this winter.

I did similar with the Epic Hannibal set. (I blame Vodkafan, who tempted me)  :D

With the small scale figures, the figures to complete one base should probably be counted as equivalent to a single 28mm figure. At least that’s what I tell myself.

With Warlord’s big battle boxes, you still blew your ratio, though, even counting bases rather than individual figure. That’s a lot of plastic!

Yeah for my "count", I just count a single base of multiple figures as one.  Keeps me sane.  So a base of my 15mm figures (2-5 minis) = 1 miniature.

As long as you count a "pack" of purchased miniatures as one, I'd say that's fair...  lol

My problem is, if I want to extend the tracking to terrain next year, how do I count scatter pieces? Buildings are easy (especially in 28mm), but scatter...?  :D

Sadly I never count terrain...which leaves me pretty short as some years it's almost all I paint...and I have a veritable crap ton of terrain.

I too have a 'problem' with terrain, especially Sci-Fi.
Over the years, sorry decades, I have been garnering 'Interesting bits' (e.g. insides of old appliances).
It has finally gotten through to me that I acquire interesting bits at a fast rate, say 20 boxes a year, BUT
am building stuff with them (look at my thread)

at about 2 boxes a year. Result is I am now a hoarder.  :o :o :o

I will HAVE to ... (I hate to say it) throw things away. :o :o :o, as the next generation (step daughter & her husband) will
probably put EVERYTHING (figures terrain & crap) into a skip, no it would have to be several skips!  >:(

I put together a more complete review of my mid-way point progress on my blog here.

https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2024/08/random-2024-mid-point-not-to-be.html

I am sure many of us have done the same, so we might as well share and share-a-like.

I typically count each base of minis as 1 miniature for my count purposes.  I am a bit surprised that almost half of my painted minis are for Heroquest!

My 6mm forces in action, each base I counted as 1 model.

Great work folks.

I was away for some of this month but decided to work on some of my larger minis as well as some annoying terrain that's been hanging around that really just needs a simple paint job to make tabletop ready.

This isn't even all of them...but another army started for 2024.

Since this pic I've added another...23 models?

Woot Chaos Dwarves.

I have started on an Anglo-saxon army, but I doubt it will get done before the end of the year.

Looks great!

This is Septembers offering. We are selling our house so all my minis are packed away, sadly that means my little painting tale of 2024 stops here:

Bringing my total so far to 259 painted and 47 terrain pieces painted vs 45 models bought and 50 models gifted... Still a lot more painting than I bought this year even if it ends here.

Those look good. Congrats on the positive end to the bought vs. painted. I should end up in the "green" this year, too. I think keeping track like this is a good idea and makes one more focused in their purchases...  :D

Closing in on the end of the year, so I'll be just shy of 500 for the year unless something changes.

Unfortunately I've bought a ton of miniatures this year, and while I've painted loads, I definitely have a stock for next year.

The latest progress is the expanded Chaos Dwarf army...

500!  Wow!  I was happy with just shy of 200 models, with over half being Heroquest models.  I did finish a few Kill Teams and a 6mm Hittite army too.

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV8IREKn9aOUWIQMvPiHHXPdaSg86PDbokd6KBVU7v1XbZkttxB3sG0gzbAG6HNxJTF1ysDWkOlSziQzl45YiVKzpv1arEkqW3WkrcXFcLjKfN8WJwcfqawCvSkTvSVGAdhcIz0P9D7LDvWjzpCryZPI8isp92ORhe1PA30pD03Km6Hp2IhAL3QytmIr8/w640-h410/IMG_3964.HEIC)

Going into next year, I still have an Anglo-saxon army for Viking Age wargaming.  It is about 80 models or so.  That will keep me busy over the winter months.  After that, my backlog is another HeroQuest expansion and that is about it.

Great work folks. Great to see so many projects going well!

Well it ain't over until it's over and I've managed to get a while bunch done in the last month now that my hose sale is in the hands of the solicitors.
