Title: AKULA's Little Wars thread - Pg2 - Different shades of grey...
Post by: AKULA on March 23, 2024, 09:10:08 PM
Time for a new project...

Ok...so I'm not an "early adopter" and the image above is AI-generated ... its almost two years since Mark Copplestone's "Little Wars" range was released, and despite being one of the first posters on Nick's thread heralding the new range, its taken this long for me to put my money where my mouth is.  To be honest, its far worse than that... Like many gamers I was brought up on Donald Featherstone's rules ... what we'd probably call "fast-play" or "simplified" rules these days.  Showing my age, but I can remember when Wargames Illustrated magazine numbers were in single digits, and it was one of the yellow cover Special Editions (Wargames World?) that featured the imagination of the late great John Ruddle.  John during a period spanning 60+ years created a fictional wargames world in his garden populated by whole nations, cities, ports, armies and navies (photo below from Wargames World).  Since those early days I've been lucky enough to play some epic Fletcher Pratt naval battles (guessing the range, and marking the shell splashes), and it is definitely something that I want to incorporate in my new project.

In many ways, John's ambition fuelled my own megalomania, so when Mark released his Little Wars range, the mental fermentation process began ... Some elements have been in my head for a while, but I've been struggling with how I want my own game to look ... rules still in a state of flux, and I've still not decided how I want the tabletop/terrain to look like, but I'm now at a stage where I want to get on with it.

So, as I said, it has been a while, but here I go  :D

The first (small) order of Copplestone Little Wars are inbound, but I suspect that my first offering may end up being of a more nautical nature

The Copplestone figures are an excellent choice for such a project. The right amount of detail and a good variety of figures. I've bought twice the amount I planned for and will be getting more.

Looking forward to your project reports.

Title: Re: AKULA's Little Wars thread - Pg1 Assembling the fleet
Post by: AKULA on March 24, 2024, 04:17:43 PM
First up a few "pseudo-nolstagic" warships ... in the style of John Ruddle

As much as I'd love to be able to build a fleet of 1920s tin warships I'll have to make do with some stand-ins as the originals are now worth a small (or even a large) fortune.

The following "battleship" can be found on eBay for as little as a fiver (although admittedly prices may have risen a bit in the last week or so).  It's pretty flimsy, but this actually works in my favour - it comes with a cheap windup mechanism, which can easily be removed as the hull has some give in it.  The gun turrets could be moved if needed, although I'm glueing them, and everything else down with a bit of superglue to stop the rattling.

I've gone for a very basic paint scheme...Ruddle's vessels were pretty much grey, but I'm adding a bit of variety to the hull to differentiate between various navies/squadrons that might use this generic looking vessel.

Its c20 cm in length ... I'll be calling it an armoured cruiser rather than a battleship.

The submarine is actually "vintage" ... I think it is from the 1950s - I love the simplicity

Did you leave any for anyone else? ;)

How about Coastal battleship, was a popular term before WWII. there was a couple of Norwegian ships taken over by the Royal navy during WWI, which they forgot to hand back afterwards, admittedly they did accidentally blow one of them up.

Really cool little ships! :-* :-*

Bob Cordery was doing something along similar lines. Might have something of use to you.

John Ruddle's stuff is such an inspiration, isn't it ?

Bob Cordery's blog has got quite a few photographs of his garden layout,
and I've done a few posts on him, including his submarine which was
not seen in Wargames World (photo from the subsequent auction),
and his interview by, and garden walkabout with, late 1970s TV:

Very much looking forward to what you do with Mark's Little Soldiers, and
only sorry (from a VBCW point of view) that you don't have another 10 foot
aircraft carrier planned!

Can't wait to see this project develop! Any chance to find more info on John Ruddles project on the internet?

Of course…. a few at least  lol

Thanks mate. Bob’s project is v.inspiring…I could spend hours on his blog  8)

Funnily enough Bob’s blog (posted by Carlos above) has some more photos of John Ruddles Garden Wargames. Apart from that Wargames Illustrated would be your best bet - the article that first inspired me was in one of the Wargames World specials.
Title: Re: AKULA's Little Wars thread - Pg1 Berglund - first figures painted
Post by: AKULA on March 31, 2024, 03:48:15 PM
My first small parcel of Little Soldiers arrived from North Star - fantastic service as always from Nick.

Lovely crisp castings with no need to tidy them up before priming.

The first imagi-nation on my todo list is Berglund.

According to the Washington Bugle: "Berglund is a land of contrasts...it's wealthy, well-educated gentry and it's oafish... at times brutish workers.  Berglund boasts (frequently) of its advanced industrial base, but the majority of its people can barely read or write. Berglund's Foreign Minister talks of peaceful co-existence with its neighbours, while the armament factories in its capital, Bergstadt are reportedly working 3 shifts a day."

Paint scheme
I've gone with a similar colour scheme to Mark's Berglanders - the base coat is Army Painter Wolf Grey.  I've gone with a neutral colour for the base...I haven't decided upon the final colour yet as I'm still thinking about the scenery, so I may repaint the bases to match the table.

These were a joy to paint, the crispness of the castings, and the minimal detailing makes them relatively easy to paint up.

Already thinking about my next (larger) order.

Title: Re: AKULA's Little Wars thread - Pg2 - Aircraft Carrier

aircraft carrier planned!

Not 10 foot... but today's offering is an aircraft carrier...its actually about 12" in length.

I think that the original toy probably dates from the 1950s...it had certainly seem better days, having lost its superstructure, most of its paint and started to corrode away.

The lack of the superstructure actually made it better suited for my plans... it reminded me of the Argus (funnily enough, this was the carrier that I based my ten footer on for VBCW).

The planes are a couple of Wings of Glory (1/144th scale?)...I'll probably add a proper air complement of Red Eagle Models rather than repaint these.

Ah, a more manageable carrier, lovely. A suggestion for the air component:

https://hereford1938avbcwtng.blogspot.com/2020/04/aircraft-reach-for-vbcw-sky.html

Very cheap on Ebay (although not as cheap as they were), easily convertible, camouflage
as you like:

https://hereford1938avbcwtng.blogspot.com/2021/01/lifting-off-out-of-lockdown-raf.html

At 8cm x 11cm, should be able to get the right "look" when parked up as an air wing on the carrier!

Thanks mate, will check them out... potentially small enough that they can sit on the carrier but also take part in games without looking odd size-wise.  If I went with the 1/144 scale planes I'd limit them to the naval games, and use other models for operations over land, so a "one size fits all" option would be good  :)

Size schmize. I just purchased a 1/144 B-52 for shits 'n' giggles. It ain't small. :D

Carrier looks good, very Argusy. I'd be tempted to make a simple island that you can add or leave off and get double use from the hull.

A good idea…I might do exactly that, although I’ve got my eye on another potential carrier as well

Hmmm….perhaps the  “ (not so) little wars thread “

A couple more additions today … more vintage toys repurposed.

Managed to find another sub and a merchant vessel for a reasonable price… possibly amongst the last of the original tin toys I’ll be able to add as the others I’ve seen are really crazy prices….fortunately I’ve plenty of the armoured cruiser variety to be going on with.

Lovely ! BTW, I can't find a reasonable source for the "armoured cruiser" - all the ones that I can find on EvilBay at the moment seem to be £25 or so (upwards). Is there a search secret, or has a glut of them passed, explaining the price differential ?

Well the cheap UK ones have {cough}  mysteriously disappeared {cough} but there is a nice chap in Spain selling them for £5.99 a pop, which if you want more than one makes sense postage-wise....just search " tin armored boat paya "   ;)

Ah....a Spanish seller ! How splendid and thanks for the tip.

In the same vein, have you looked on Ebay under "Lego Vintage Ship" - it
turns up old hulls (Lego Tug, Lego Police Boat, Lego Freighter). These hulls
come in two to four bits, and you can therefore make your ship as short or
long as you want.

Admittedly, the deck is covered in lego pimples, but that is easy enough to
cover with plasticard. A free rein for scratchbuilding a superstructure.

The good thing is that the Lego collectors don't want bits of these ship kits,
but only the complete thing. Most of the time, therefore, the old hulls come
up pretty cheaply (i.e. about £5 - £6).

I have indeed, although I must confess that I've focussed upon some of the larger hulls on offer... keeping those for another project  :D

This project is going to make some more snail-like progress...

Have some more I'm looking to add, but first up I've tweaked some of the existing models.

I decided that the dark grey ...while "realistic" is too drab and dreary for this particular project, so I've repainted the subs with the Berglund base colour(Army Painter Wolf Grey), as the subs fit in well with the background that I'm building for that faction...mainly a land power, but developing a relatively modern navy to counter its more developed maritime neighbour (Albion).

I really love the look of these 1950s toys...even the packaging is perfect

Yes I know... this update amounts to repainting some grey models a slightly different grey.... exciting hey  lol

Cool, weirdly I used to live on the West Street mentioned on that box, and I've never heard of that company. Mind you it looks like it was made in the 50's.

Time to search for Sebel Products Ltd then  :D
