Title: How to match Little Big Men transfer colours?
Post by: zemjw on 30 March 2024, 07:39:55 PM
My brother-in-law assures me that the Little Big Man transfer sheets match Vallejo colours, to help with shield touch-up etc.

However, I can't find anything that tells me what colour to use for the transfers I have (various Oathmark Elf ones). Can someone point me at the approriate Rosetta Stone please.

Thanks

The elf ones I have (Elf infantry) are matched using Vallejo ultramarine lightened with white.  I don’t think anything straight out of the bottle will match them.

I’ve always resorted to trial and error.

Thanks folks :D

Trial and error is my usual approach, sadly with the emphasis on the error :(

I should have Ultramarine in the pile somewhere, so I'll try on a scrap of foil (this is for the back of a banner) and see how it looks

I don't think a 100% match will be possible all of the time (if at all). They might have made a true match when printing, but you have to bear in mind that all batches of paint will differ ever so slightly; none are perfectly the same.

I used to work at an ink factory, and you wouldn't believe the lengths they had to go to, to make sure their products were within a certain margin from set color coordinates!

Also; I have had numerous Vallejo paints with exactly the same number and name being distinctly different from each other. Different batches, different ingredients and recipies; margins in hobby paints seem a lot looser than those in the printing ink industry.

So in my experience, matching paint to print will always be trial and error...

I can mostly match my ancient shields with Vallejo

Cheers

Take a close look at the shield you're trying to match.

What is the colour?

Does that colour (say it is a red) lean towards orange or purple? If so add a little of that colour to your mix.

Maybe the colour is lighter than first appears- sort of bleached? Add an off white (don't use straight white, it's far too luminescent.)

That sort of thing until you get the right mix. Like anything in life, the more you practice the better you will get at it.
