That’s a great looking collection, always amazed how quickly you can put these things together!

Excellent! Great-looking troops! And yet another war I need to collect!

Another interesting period you have collected.
The Perry's make a fine range of figures.
Look forward to seeing your terrain.

A Detachment of the 74th Highlander Regiment commanded Lt Col. John Fordyce. Using the brilliant painted references from my friend @JAD965, I certainly had something to aspire to with this new Sharp Practice project.

74th Highlander Regiment deployment point or objective marker for Sharp Practice. I decided to do everything in one go for this project as I have a couple of new collections in the pipeline this year. You should see these in a battle report soon.

Antelope Herd. I have added several species of African animals to the collection, as I think no self-respecting African wargames table should be without wildlife. I would like them to interact with the gameplay in a subtle way.

The majestic Cheetah, the fastest land animal in the world, reaching speeds of up to 120kph or 75mph. Just don’t play them in a card game, as you simply can’t trust them 😬

At least they're not lion all the time. ;)
Splendid stuff, and you cannot have too many velvet and jungle animals. Just caught my annual spring/summer Darkest Africa bug again, too.

Great collection of figures!

Nice job on those wee lads. Animals, too!

43rd (Monmouthshire Light Infantry) Regiment of Foot. In 1851, it was sent to fight in the Eighth Cape Frontier War (1850-53). Some of its new recruits were aboard HMT ‘Birkenhead’ when it sank off the South African coast in February 1852.

Splendid wildlife painting.
Perhaps we should do lots of wildlife for every setting, not just Africa?

The infantry regiments didn’t carry their colours into the field, but as a wargamer why would you turn down the opportunity of adding a standard to your miniatures. Flag from @flagsofwar 👌

Luvverly!! :-* :-*
I hope the good chief didn't possess real 'cavalry dash'. I've always understood that to mean someone is a bit daft a la 'the cavalry officer who was so stupid his brother officers noticed'. :D

I'm loving this thread, Lord Raglan. A great project and a very interesting era.
-
Cheers guys 👍🏻
-
A most impressive thread. Thank you very much for sharing.
I am very tempted to try out the period solely because of the figures from Perry and Iron Duke. But I am still unsure as I also like the look of the Maori Wars and maybe the Indian mutiny. The question of course is which would offer a greater variety of games. Or are they all interchangeable?
The giraffe is very well done. Too bad the pictures are blurry upon closer inspection. You have done an incredible job of doing the spots. It is not something I think I can ever imitate.
By your standards, is this project progressing quicker or slower than usual? In my view, the problem with trying out such a niche period is that you have to collect both opposing forces. How painting that many figures without burnout is something I need to learn and master.
-
The Cape Wars and their associated ranges have quite a few campaign modifications to uniforms and kit, which are relatively distinctive, albeit the Perry range has quite a few sets in basic shells and forage caps that could be used elsewhere. Peaked forage caps on ORs,wideawake hats, stocking caps, locally made belly boxes and tunics shorn of lace are however, pretty much a Cape War thing.
The 1st Maori War range is a bit more versatile, being essentially an 1830s/40s undress uniform, so you could arguably extend their use to say Gwalior, China (1st Opium War), Afghanistan and painted as Marines, the 1840 Syria Conflict plus a few more no doubt. Naturally you could add variety with the Perry figures in the same kit.
As per usual you can of course choose to use your toys however you see fit.
-
Thank you Mr Carlos, that is a very helpful explanation. So much to think about.
-
Carlos has it about right but I must confess my (Perry, Cape Wars) redcoats have seen service in 1840’s New Zealand and other theatres, straw hats notwithstanding!

Those Cape Mounted Rifles look great - but they don't look mounted! :o lol. I know, I know, horse holders are there with the horses. Just couldn't resist.

They do indeed look great. Mounted or otherwise! 8)

Fantastic-looking figures! Great basing too!

Very cool stuff is there a colonial supplement to sharps? Anything to game Sudan, NWF, little wars, etc.?
Asking as you’ve based all these up for sharps and I just picked up that rule set.

Yes mate, John Savage wrote a very good supplement for the Sudan in last year's Lard Christmas Special.

"After all these years we have known each other, I can't believe you doubted me" <<< laughed out loud at this! lol lol
Who needs an AAR with such sumptuous photos. Love that terrain, especially the hills. The only thing missing is a bit of wildlife - but no doubt scared off by all the weapons firing.

Bc99, I’ve still got some copies of my Sharp Practice guide to the Cape Frontier Wars (see earlier threads for more information) if you’re looking at ways of refighting the Cape Wars using ‘Sharp Practice’
-
Oh, woe is me, feeling doubly embarrassed - not only are the mounted version alluded to above seen on the first page of this thread (I believe, pretty sure), I completely missed the antelope herd! How dare I!!! o_o. And jealous, too. Closest, so far, I've been able to find in 15 mm is the Irregular pronghorn antelopes for my African varied species - have plenty to paint at least as Tommies, Grant's, and Impalas - though those three were different in size and horns aren't right. Sometimes we 'beggars' can't be choosy. Until something better comes along...still hoping a certain (unnamed) supplier will release at least some.
Wow, sir, ever more amazing work from you.
-
Lovely photos, Lord Raglan.
Figures and terrain we all wish we had.

I love the sound of bagpipes in the morning. It sounds like...victory!
I know that's paraphrased from a different period, but oh well. It fits. Lovely work on the wee lads!
