Hi,
I seem to collect and now have even started to game (solo) 40K which is a bit odd given that I used to avoid it like the plague. Only small narrative games and I am sure that I am making many mistakes but still at least I get to push around a few of my models.
The question I have is where do people buy civilians or servitors? As my little skirmishes are occurring in a world I would like to populate it a little. I do have some of the excellent Northstar Stargrave plastics but I am looking for mechanics, servitors, civilians and the like. Has anyone else bothered with this for the 40K world?
I do use the Flagellant box for some servitors and have the odd scribe/mechanicus figure from the kill team set but I need lots. Zombicide has provided all the civilian zombies I will ever need (90+ at the moment).
Any pointers would be much appreciated-I have asked on this forum as I regard it as a safe space! I don't want to be chased out of town by a baying mob for asking about non GW figures...

How about these:

Also the wargames atlantic cannon fodder miniatures could be converted to workers.

Wargames Atlantic is coming out with Romans and barbarian slingers etc, which to me reflect the abject poverty and squalor 40K civilians seem to live in.
-
Just had a look aat the Crooked Dice miniatures-thanks Sgt T I will be using a few of these, the dock workers especially. I had never actually thought of using medieval figures 113 but actually with a bit of conversion that would work for hive dwellers/poor workers and the like, great idea!
Thanks for the pointers Guys... back to the Colony 87 pages I think.

First you’d need to give your world a ‘theme’. I’ve seen various historical periods used for 40k worlds, obviously with added ‘grim-tech’. It’s largely up to you how much tech is visible. Tech may be so rare it’s for use of the high born only, or so common it is found on all but the very poorest. As such, you’d have to make the theme decision, and how common tech is.
Sources for ‘grim-tech’ are (obviously) the 40k Ad Mechanicus troops on eBay. If you are up for scratch building, skulls and guitar string makes servo skulls, plastic tube/rod in assorted profiles can make mechanical limbs, and cherubs are found on eBay jewellery bracelet charms:

Wargame exclusive makes some really cool ,,working" servitors:

For the civilians, I converted them using WHF Empire Militia and some GSC stuff. But really anything goes, a head swap and a properly selected colour scheme makes wonders to any historical/civilian figure, and marine+Guard boxes come with loads of bare heads.

I'll echo the previous posters about getting a theme/tech level established.
There are quite a few Warhammer Old World styled civilian figures out there that already have the grimdark part and just need 'futuring' to get that 40k feel.
The old Lead adventure miniatures Astropolis range was fairly 40kish.

Heresy have a few unarmed figures and robots.

Hey thanks for the tips! Using the GW figures is a touch of genius about it. I am currently skirmishing on a desert/mining world so I will try and adapt some Gripping Beast arab types... it never occurred to me to do this before. I have been stripping and
painting the old Dinky space vehicles which seem to be 1/48 ish scale... I will start this again with renewed vigor as I can now crew them.
Thanks again for the help, this has been invaluable as I was at a dead end. Servitor skulls next...

Have you perused Dr Mathias ( Matt's ) posts? He has accumulated an amazing collection of 40K civilians. Really inspirational painting.

In addition to Dr Mathias, have a look at Axiom's main thread in Future Wars. He's the original brains behind Colony87 (unless I've misremembered that) and one of the most inspirational (in my humble opinion) guys when it comes to populating a 40k world.

Are they supposed to be zombies? The modern ones....look at the faces....

I would also suggest having a look at the gothic tech horror.

They sure look like they could be with the bare sculpts and the empty eyes... :o
