Title: Beefcakes Undead Project.
Post by: beefcake on 05 May 2024, 03:37:33 AM
Undead was my first GW army and I still have a soft spot for it. I was lucky to find someone selling off a whole bunch of old 90's undead minis which has now managed to make my army almost a complete set of the undead army book minis (and some extras) While my painting take forever to complete (too many hobbies) I do work away at them, and when the muse hits I seem to get a load done.
This might have been part of my first GW boxed set too. I bought the GW skeleton army box many, many years ago and vividly remember getting it because I was probably about 13, just started to notice pretty girls and at my Mum's work she made me show the very pretty secretary the geeky skeletons I had just bought. Mortifying.
Anyway, I found these in a small container and realised they were in dire need of a repaint. So a quick spray of skeleton bone, some highlights and then a wash got the bone done. The weapons I just did with Reaper's rust triad paints and I think works well with them, despite the fact the shileds should probably be wood, along with the spear hafts.
As you can see some of the minis have seen better days too. My brother took to one with superglue to give it a gooey look and some of the weapons are broken too. I was surprised I still had this many left. To be honest I'm looking for more at a cheap price now, putting these together as a kid was quite fun as the kits were perfect for posing them whichever way you wanted.
I have a bunch of wights painted up already and some primed, so they might be the next on the list. There are also doubles of every zombie except 1, 1 of each wraith, 1 of each mummy (and an extra with the flail) and all the ghouls too plusI thing I have each of the special characters minus the special vampires. And my zombie dragon had a proxy rider but I bought the wight lord to go atop it, although I don't think I have the legs. Hopefully facebook groups can be my friend there.

A big fan of undead also, I am thinking of building an Ancient Greek style army based on the wargames Atlantic undead

Cheers

Thanks :) I based them with loose limestone from my drieway as well. Plenty of little rocks for all my basing needs now.

I managed to pick up 4 chariots and an undead skeleton horde recently.
Since the chariots look a bit weird with the regular bases and then the chariot sitting loose at the back I decided to lasercut some bases for them at work. They look pretty good. I lasercut a large one as well for Arkhan when I get around to painting him. Which is always slow going with me.
I always loved the artwork to this box. I threw away my box when I first bought them moments after ripping into it I imagine. This one will be kept, probably just flattened down and stored though.
Next purchase will be 8 undead horses. I think the current tombkings still use the same skeleton horses as the 90's. I'm sure I'll be able to pick some up somewhere.

Good idea  :)

I’ve based mine on 80mm rounds because of the scythes. In hindsight I should really remove them and rebase on ovals.

My, these are a blast from the past.  Well done on the infantry and those chariot bases will do well.  Keep that box.  That was always some of my favorite box art.

I love them. I had that box set too, mostly cannibalized later for scenic elements.

Oldschool, goodness  8)

I've always loved that banner on the box art. So much so in fact, that I've blatantly copied it on the banner of my own Skeleton horde, even though they are of the Mantic variety.

I had no idea those scythes pointed out that far on the chariots though!  :o

The big MDF bases are interesting. For my WoC army, I did two chariots with individually based horses (standard cavalry bases) and the chariot on a 50mm square. These I then put on a movement tray, so I could then remove one or more horses when they got killed. There is, however something to say for a single base with everything on there; much more opportunity to turn them into mini diorama's :)

There's definitely going to be a lot of dead space *ahem* on Arkhan's chariot base. While I don't like putting diorama pieces on it, some reaching arms might not look too bad coming out of the ground, as if everywhere he goes, the dead rise. I might need to do some specific bases for Dieter and the zombie dragon too.

Yep, Those scythes are rather large. I think my bases were about 50mm wide so those scythes come out quite far. I wonder if I should have done some bases with the cavalry stands at different distances so they could be staggered but still line up nicely together with the bases.
I love them. I had that box set too, mostly cannibalized later for scenic elements.
Yep, I did that first time round too.

Thanks. My favourite skeleton is the axe wielding one looking at the viewer.

Looking good! It's amazing how well the Skeleton Horde holds up - still pretty much state of the art, despite its age. They look tremendous here!

Yes, I think because the kept the bones quite fine, unlike the later versions, it made them more realistic. I think it's the best of the gw skeletons range. Wargames Atlantic skeletons are quite on par so I hear.

Righto, I've finished the chariots. I'm pretty happy with them. Very limited colour palette due to everything being bone coloured, I made the yoke to them grey and the scythed wheels rusted to add some variation. The bases have been done in limestone again but it kind of blends with the bone colour but I'm going to base everything this way so went with it anyway.
Originally these had riders with lance arms on them but I've set them aside to go on some skeletal horses I've ordered from a tomb kings box so I can get 4 horsemen out of this lot as well at the expense of 4 infantry from the infantry box I bought from Slayer (thanks mate).
After this I have some Wights on my workbench, I have 5 of the 8 from the time period I'm looking for so will need to get the other 3 at some point in time. I have 2 other different versions of wights as well, 1 from and earlier set, 1 from a later set. They should fit together nicely if I paint them with a similar theme. I think I'll go for rusted iron with a touch of bronze in there too.

They look great, I do love those bases. I remember buying a box with 1 chariot and 3 cavalry I think? Also 8 skellies, those were good days.

Are you keeping your Undead a purist force or any non GW stuff? Wargames Atlantic/ Warlord have plastic skellies that could ‘flesh’ your numbers out  ;D ;D (so sorry)

great stuff

I remember being seriously ridiculed back in the day when I turned up at the local GW store with a small skelly army based on that plastic horde set.

For doing them in similar to my mind bone and brown limited colouring in - eg like real dug up dirty bones as possible. Actually mainly I think based on a GW article actually of the time from the Dwarf.

They looked good. not yours good, but good.

Reason for ridicule "they are supposed to be bones like, black and white."... - the other in attendance nodded in the expected accord to the staffers better knowledge.

I never bothered going back again. Funny the details you remember of people being stupid.

Your bases are really suited to them to, love the bare barren ground suggestive of rocky desert, devoid of anything living.

Wonderful work Beefcake!  Nice to see the old bones with some color.
TI remember buying a box with 1 chariot and 3 cavalry I think?
Back in my day we use to wish we had skeletal cavalry.  We had to make do with a box of 24 plastic skeletons and some twigs! lol  Of course at the time they were only $20.00 for the box so maybe not as bad as I remember.  We still had to walk up hill to and from school in the snow. lol lol

Yes, I'm going purist. I'm aiming to have at least 1 of each model from the 3rd ed army book which is the one I bought a long time ago. I have most of them maybe. I need 1 specific metal zombie and 1 specific metal zombie standard bearer, all the metal skeleton command 3 other wights and all the metal skeleton cavalry. That's about it though. I have all the special characters (although there weas no Krell or Settra at that time), I might need a mounted necromancer too I think. Oh and the skull chucker which I have parts of but not complete.

Well that's pretty crap. glad it didn't put you off the hobby for good though.
It was either rocky/sandy bases or boggy bases. And seeing as I have all the limestone I could want to make rocky bases it was the easy, cheap option. Thanks :)

Thanks!
Here are the next 3. 3 Wights of varying eras.
The leftmost wight is the era I like the most, although this is one of my least faourite sculpts.
The middle one I bought originally in a set of 3 with a necromancer (next on the painting table after the wights) and a vampire count. The wight I ended up selling a while back so was happy to find a replacement at some stage. The rightmost one I bought in a job lot, I don't particularly like the sculpt too much, he's showing a bit too much leg for my liking, but you can't call me a prude for that because page 1 shows evidence of me painting up a bunch of naked skeletons. I also had to replace his weapon with a plastic beastman axe as the original broke off.
The armor I painted extremely rusted as I figure they've been in their barrows for quite a long time. The weapons I painted green as they are wight blades so I figure they have some magical ability to keep them dangerous, unless the danger from wight blades is tetanus. Never thought about that.
I picked out the "living" bones with a bit more brightness to give them a difference to the bone decorations.
The next three should be ready for pictures in a couple of days. Then the necromancer followed by probably some mummies.

Great project! Undead are my favourite faction for fantasy, I remember seeing a vast army of minifigs in Nottingham model shop as a kid and I think that’s stayed with me all these years, your bases for the chariot are great! So much better! Love the wights too! I have most of them

Thanks. These 90's wight sculpts are some of the best I think
Here are the next wights.
These my 3 favourite of the wights. Especially the wight with the large axe. I wonder if he was an early version of Krell, or at least I imagine a lot of people would have used him as a proxy. Probably much like the flail mummy (which is on the list after the necromancer) was used as a proxy settra in the early version, before he was mounted on a chariot. Although as I have 2 of that sculpt I might see if I can get a different chariot sculpt to mount him on.
The wights I have done rusty as said previously, but I also did them with bronze parts too with the green copper oxide patina covering them
Anyway, here are the pictures.

Lovely, lovely work. Thanks for sharing!

As an aside the undead army in White Dwarf 211 is what got me into this hobby way back when, with all the gothic contrasting black-and-white bones, so it was disappointing and oddly ironic to read the other poster getting stick for not painting that way. I love that style. I also love the style on display here. All undead are valid  :D

Thanks all.
I'll have to see if I have 211 (or more liekly if my prother does as I mostly read his before buying my own).
I might need to get some more of these wights. Hopefully broken ones so I can do some conversions. I'd love to use the spear wight as a battle standard bearer.
Just need to take some photos of the necromancer. I'm pretty happy with the result. I've used my vampiric skin paints on it which I'll do for the majority of my flesh tones I think. I reckon the skin tones will work well for the ghouls too. Thinking back I wonder why GW went for green with them, a pale white would look suitably creepy, then again they did go for fun colours and they looked good.

Here is the first of the characters, aside from the fact that the wights could be characters as well.
The necromancer. This is one of my first minis I bought for my undead army back when I was 12, 13 or whatever age I was. 30 years ago at least anyway. I originally chopped his base tab off so I could stick him on the back of my plagues cart (which I still have and will probably rebase for the purposes of this). I stripped it a few years back and now repainted. As I said previously, I went for a vampiric skin flesh tone from Reaper minis (one of their painting triads) and it worked really well. Originally I was going to paint the ruff white, but I thought the red would work better with the other colours used. I was lazy and used the rust red that the wights are painted in. The fact that it ties them togetherwith the colour scheme was what pushed my laziness with it. The staff I origanlly painted bronze but it was going to be too bright for this guy. I also made the eyes black with white dots for light reflection. Not sure that came off too well.
He will be a lesser necromancer for the army, level 1 I imagine. The great thing about doing this is I can also use them in my DnD campaigns with my kids.
I'm finding myself being a lot more patient with my painting lately (not so much the skeletons), maybe I want to do a better job on these than usual.

He's the one circled in red. He came in a pack with the others in blue, the wight on the right  lol has featured here already. I painted the lich near the top a year or 2 ago so will be leaving that as is (just rebasing). The vampire with the arms up I have a duplicate of so will leave my original painted as it is (painted by a friend a long time ago) and then just add in this new one with my own paint job.
I'm almost tempted to chop him at the waist and mount him on a Tom Meier Zombie dragon I bought re-released through Ral Partha Europe but I won't do that.

I've quickly painted up a ghoul as I'm having a go at Frostgrave with my brother tomorrow. The ghoul is going to be my apprentice to the previously painted necromancer. I think he makes a nice apprentice. Obviously he will appear as a ghoul in the undead army but I thought it would be good to give the ghouls a test. I painted the skin the same as the necromancer but instead of a thinned black wash I gave him a sepia dip as he should look grimy, being a ghoul an all. I did the black eyes with white dots again. I think it makes them look suitably evil. I quite like how the teeth worked out. Tanned leather with skeleton bone highlights.
I used the lasercutter again to cut some more bases at 60c (NZ) per sheet it is pretty cheap ($15 for a 2.4mx1.2m sheet). So I cut about 150 20mm bases some slotted some not and I also cut 2 bases for screaming skull catapults. I've lost a bunch of pieces from mine so I bought a spare catapult from Troll Trader as I didn't need the crew. Here they are in their original paint job from young teen me. Brown bones and silver chainmail. In fact they've collected a lot of dust so a dip in some stripper will be good for them.

Since the chariots look a bit weird with the regular bases and then the chariot sitting loose at the back I decided to lasercut some bases for them at work.

Very clever idea!

Liking this thread more and more.  Very nice work.
And I was wondering if I should go for undead next. This is not helping me stay focused..
Focused?  Repeat this mantra three times.  "I am a leaf on the wind.  See how I float to whatever takes my fancy!!" lol lol lol
Beefcake.  Is that a backdrop for photos or an actual terrain piece?  Very cool either way.

Yes it is. I made some tabletop borders for a kickstarter. This is the crypt version. I'll be doing a dungeon with these fairly soon. Perfect for showing off these guys.

Getting along very nicely :)

The ghoul especially is looking good; the sepia wash is the way to go I think. "Alas, poor Orruk; I knew him, Horatio..." :D

The screaming skull bases are great too; no need clipping off the tabs with bases like this!

Great stuff, Love the armour on the wights and I also never liked the unbased warmachines. I have an undead army in a box waiting for some love.

The skeleton army box brings back great memories of my oldest friend Steve
He was not a great painter or builder but he bought 3 boxes ( i think) and built and painted an army. Took him about 10 years! He was so proud and brought it to our boys weekend away where he'd normally have to borrow someone elses army.
We used to meet a couple of times a year, all old school friends to play warhammer.
Very first game steve was against mark (dwarves) and its going ok but comes to a critical panic check for the dwarves.
We are all watching this titanic clash
As usual Mark reaches for his lucky dice. Its a massive 4 inch solid lump of metal he made at school in metalwork.
He puts some major spin on his roll, it bounces once and then flys across the table into the undead horde, pulverising little skeletons and flinging parts off in all directions. There is total silence before Mark says 'Shall we call it a draw'

Here is the first of the mummies. I think this one was meant to be the Settra proxy model as no Settra model had been made for 3rd edition. It fits as it has a flail.
I initially was going to go for pale zombie flesh but just after I did the first layer (and it not looking so good) I saw a picture of a mummy online and was reminded of their actual flesh colour a dark dark brown so I proceeded to paint them that way. I think it works nicely to contrast the pale colour of the bandages. The bronze worked out nicely on these too I think. I have a dull turquoise colour which I use and for this mummy and another I rubbed the majority of it off with my fingers after it had mostly dried, then did a little touch up of the bronze where I had rubbed too hard. It worked nicely I think. I'm not overly happy with the rusted chains. I may go over them with a further darker wash to fill in the crevices better. I have a duplicate of this model as well. I'm tempted to put one on a chariot.

I bought a few more undead of Slayer and gave a few minutes to converting the incomplete Strigoi Vampire. I used a genestealer head and a crypt horror arm (provided by Slayer), chopped off the large back to the head and added some GS for longer teeth and regular skin and ears. Pretty happy with the result. This guy will be a hero for the group of ghouls I have. I'm debating shopping off the tongue and drilling a small hole to give it a gap. I probably will.

And here are the horsemen. Only 4 for now, hopefully I can get more. These were mounted on the chariots but I liked them better as horsemen so I bought 8 horses from a tomb kings set. 4 for these guys and 4 for Arkhan's chariot when I get around to it.
Also the battle standard bearer, or possibly just a regular standard bearer if I find a better one later one. All of thee haqve been painted for a week or two, just awaiting the photographs. I still need to add shields to the horsemen.

It always annoyed me that in WD there were army pictures of these with several units of archers (ten-20 figures worth) and yet you only got one archers arm with the cavalry sprue  lol

Yes, very frustrating, especially when the infantry sprue had 5 arm choices for 4 infantry, 3 hand weapons 1 spear and a scythe. Although hard to decide which to lose I guess.

Mummies are done.
I managed to find one of my original night horrors. I had all of the mummies from the night horrors range but sold them in the great purge before I got back into this miniatures business. One fell through the cracks which I kept (maybe at a later date I'll flesh *haha them out with some night horrors) I'm pretty happy with these guys. I like the contrast in the skin tone compared to the bandages (which are the same mix for my skeleton bones) I've got 2 of the same mummy in there. Both seem to be the inspiration or be inspired by the Settra character. I prefer the one with the bronze flail part. It breaks the colours up nice but both are great. It is a really nice miniature.
Also down the bottom I've included an army shot so far. Looks like I forgot the banner bearer. I realise I've actually not painted many character figures yet. 2 show in the picture but 1 is from a while back, a liche. I'm thinking I might give Dieter Helsnicht a go in all his manticorey goodness. Totalling it up this is just over 2000pts in 3rd edition.
Later on I'll create some lasercut movement trays for them. I might use thick card for underneath but 3mm mdf to match the base heights.

And I didn't get any painting time in.
School holidays now though so I got stuck in to the manticore from Ditere Helsnitch... snicth.. snicht... Helsnicht.
Quite fun to paint. I went with Vampire skin trio and a heavy wash followed by a bit more highlighting. Same look I'm going for on the ghouls, which are next in line (or possibly the Skull Chucka)
Still need to do the inner of the mouth which I missed. I've also recently put sand in between the toes which I will now say is the reason for him pulling such a face.

And here it is with Dieter finished too. No banner just yet
I have to print out the banner. I've taken a photo of the banners from my old army book and am colouring them on the computer (Arkhan's banner not quite finished yet). If it works well I'll do it for the rest otherwise I'll just print the pages and hand paint them. I might do some weathering on these as I print them as well.
Anyway, I've had Dieter for a good long time. I added some GS to it at first to make the manticore's mane look a bit more real but removed that recently as I started this project as Dieter wouldn't fit very well. I'm going for quite a dull looking palette for these as I don't think bright colours really fit the undead theme very well. So the purple robe is bruised purple from reaper which I think fits nicely. The scorpion tail tip has a bit of green added which matches nicely with the eyes of the staff of flaming death and the chaos runesword. He's one of the most expensive characters (pointswise) for the undead getting close to Nagash himself due to the manticore he is riding. He could be pushed past Nagash as well as he can take 2 more magic items so I'm pretty happy to get the Doom Lord of Middenheim finished.
Also below Dieter are pictures of the ghouls up next. I've now finished the skin undercoat on them with the Vampire Dark paint from Reaper. I think I'm going to do all evil skintones with this triad as it fits so nicely for necromancers, ghouls and vampires. The ghouls I give a brown wash afterwards to make them a bit more grimy.
Also a picture of some movement trays I knocked up at work. the circular one is for my wights. I'm also planning on making some blank bases with old bones from failed conversion experiments when I was a teenager with the undead horde box.

On a roll! Dieter's looking spiffy; the pallette suits the army well 8)

And those are handsome movement trays. I know they're not really fashionable these days, but they're really handy and yours look good already.

Now follow my lead and add the unit's banner/standard/leader's face to the empty space between the borders, so they look like those graphics in old White Dwarf battle reports when viewed from above ;)

Thanks all, The ghouls are coming along nicely too. Probably get onto a skull chucker after them or maybe another wight of an older sort I recently bought.

The ghouls are done. Vampire skin triad with a sepia wash on them gives them a suitably grimy look.
There seem to be 2 distinct sculpting styles some of them look almost like the bloodbowl ghouls of the same era so may have been sculpted at the same time as them I suspect. Those are my favourite of the bunch so I've placed them in the front rank... to die first.
22 ghouls all done fitting inside the basing tray too. I've got some carrion all ready to go next.

That's such a cool project. To me, the Undead of that time are the definitive take on the subject, and I even got a soft spot for the special characters. Amazing that you could find some Skeleton Horde chariots; very cool. :)

So you colouring in Arkhan's banner means you got that one as well? He's probably my favourite special character from that range.

Ghouls look great. Pretty sure I've never seen such a big unit of them all in one place!

Thanks :) Yeah I bought the chariots of Slayer here on LAF, they are quite cool models.
Arkhan is the only special character I owned when I was a teenager, which I then sold in my twenties and now have bought again. I'll be printing the banners out today.
I found 2 different people selling off a large bunch of ghouls so it was like a double christmas. I always liked the snippet of information about Vorag the ghoul king in the old army book so I'm going to get a proper strigoi vampire for that. I've painted up the conversion job I did which looks good but I'd be happier with a proper strigoi as the sculpting fits much better.

Excellent. I just built the new Wargames Atlantic skeleton chariots for a review and can wholeheartedly recommend them, but a little part of me wished that they were all made from bones rather than being just regular chariots. :D

I think they double up as their ancients chariots
