Hello,
My name is Stewart, a frequent lurker and infrequent poster. I've always enjoyed the project log posts here on LAF, seeing how projects develop and grow over time.
Fates have aligned, as I'm starting a Quar project in a big way around the same time as others, so I thought this time, why not join in. 😁
I've got a small pile of Quar to work through. The plan (there's always a plan) is start with some multiplayer skirmish forces, then make a terrain board, and then expand from there.
Here are some Royalists that I've recently completed:
group shot:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibqO0zE2UUGj_pLsx8MhDlqWNEE__zDB2jPbuaamw-5fZcd6h-HjZie6lKi6s3gFd5pRy_sovppqmkuGRT7x7tAVJMngdoByPqkfs5S3LEx1YrocYl6N-cVXy0hfO0RQQY1YWFUCmyX7ZTG0aZlFTLKc9ryWZ5QGSJj7YHBQDYjkYxKPUxFDDFnJSHkyY/w640-h480/q9.jpg)
close up. not that I'm the best painter, but so you can actually see them.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS4Wcjh9LHh4oRbc7ifIeOvwDPqEfCKUlK47ytuRjIdx_XXg3D6cpZBE1W_L8IzvlTGsI4TPyExf4yY4-i2wZVteUzg4GgdYt8N1-K_2QfWUgeqFY6u1mLZAA6kAuebreCV7-qpxEBiEMpjlPATjEeZsFYE_iAlXTNnhoIMyl_pdSsB5mNNEa_kMm8U0A/w640-h480/q8.jpg)
Most of the newly painted stuff has been on the old metal sculpts,
but here is a recent resin blister all done; the Royalist Trench raiders.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvJhFOuGEAu6A71mFvhDzppPgW2BAWQ_w8P0YLH-8t53qk2JuCcsXqhUILXthPGFh-mcxdhNS1i0-DksBn5xUfkIzaAO3ZjFBTGh08NgsI_YCnX5sy2C6fuYvMAq8QIbvnBAEyy86oRh-RBcGUYOeznWOCgqdnpzVsa_4nQY6hoFvUn61DmeQB1x1jmGQ/w640-h480/q16.jpg)
Here's the completed Royalists so far: some new, some from a long time ago..
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRvL_hG9Vba5W1U-379gP60uHowLVcNX_F6sAfysO11lctOvC9DX5-yUuBRpR_MNdVZZdlVdZdL18NQc3IhZOakK1ajd4OF73WMMhQoralW-WaoD0s5rkOKBbDQqAPKs8OjE8lN2cT-ahok4yf3uKXrQpMHb6uqgdBH2cnAeALgmfnB9hhX9E7P5oBd_c/w640-h480/q18.jpg)
It's an adequate start. Quar to come of course. :)
If inclined to read blogs, there are more pics and mildly amusing prose on me blog over here:

Nice start Stew - my Royalists are presently neglected in favour of terrain.
-
Great blog post, thanks for the quar background.
Looks like you've found yourself a sizeable force and enjoyed the plastic/resin crack hit. (I know those feelings) ;D
I look forward to some interesting developments here Stew.
-
Thanks guys.
@SI: we’re just doing things in reverse order. I’ll do the miniatures first and then the terrain. Maybe we’ll switch over at the same time and have the forum covered. 😀
@Constable: glad you liked the blog post. I try to make them amusing to make up for lack of talent. I can definitely promise more developments but can’t promise interesting. 😀
-
Welcome aboard.
That is a great start.
I have been reading the PDFs from www.rhyfler.com (http://www.rhyfler.com), lots of inspiration for scenarios.
-
Thanks Ultra.
It is nice that most of the PDFs are free downloads. I happen to already have a copy of the one that’s not. Lots of good background and such. 😀
-
As I said on your blog, great stuff mate! 👍
-
Thanks GG. Nearly done with some more. 😀
-
Great stuff.
-
I keep looking at these and yours are wonderfully well done. Right now, I am really, really trying to "not" start another whole project. I have enough of them on the go at the moment without another one.

Go on, you know you want to.

Hello again,
Thank you Snitchy and Spinal and the rest.
I've finished off some more Quar that I'd like to share.
Rounding off the Royalists are these fellows:

2 snipers, who for some reason don't have helmets but fancy hats.

and the new resin blister of the Coftyran Officers:

That rounds out all the needed Coftyrans (for now.....)
so It's time for some Crusaders.
10 crusaders join the cause:

extra brownie points for me to remember that ya'll over here put the day and then the month, because us Americans do it ta other way. :)
-
The6 are very good.
-
Another great Quar blog post. Loving it mate!
-
Thank you gentlemen.
A fe more Quar to paint up still and then on to terrain. :)

Hello all,
I have some more of our favorite Muppets of war to share. The adorable Quar.
first off, I did up some of the Cadiers, which is the Quar analog for a horse.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZtHRo6b9e52DPVOn8JsAK3mKLcZgu6AV4kwa-oW47_HXFwR-LcSnth_BLFwxHS3wdeiRvrMms_VVpi2gFlTaPXadKWmshD1kwFzsJlvW_NhGju-kt5iosgnvwgZ61bxGwETFRHghCtNuAnwvxCR40Y9l-OatkNtv-v9me09W4CiIQR6g3bJLRq4hBhVQ/w640-h480/q1.jpg)
strange beasties those are.
Here is a Crusader Yawdryl (NCO)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB7giBBIBWgBmfH7hyphenhyphenqz-7op_ka_Pf3j2hOHjvcFoy1gKVyA44g5i7yNsTlnJJnVkEevgAkOkioxOCy6ncOnekjAXHiHH0Rm3ZFdmG-FP0KpJQIwEVSkuUBfAVuDWY8C1oqjbspAnI36aTtXELk4Qyx53jLAjSbp4Qk1jCkhRUeanUk0jVL2rajUPGkjk/w640-h480/q10.jpg)
And some Crusader Is-Ceartens (like Junior Lts)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIgAlqH00XJPf5Cyhyphenhyphenz4ajvh-AJlxmesnXwqcTqBrunlqQjss9lQ8NjCok_dFRo2PZl9ttcHAUQGGMTKXoIbwNwIVirLdYqJfeMcK6nQhqManiN-TG-Y1k5XCdgaDuGtde6PDecta_sBd34RlkiV7zupBWNEDJZ1D5y-6ytneWTdAdEJCKr2DJuWH8Vw8/w640-h480/q12.jpg)
Here are the same figures in resin, from the new blister "crusader officers"
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtX0GgwY0peOuTagrfUB_xHCPRaNI7fNfpoHpUjAp1V00DMu0s9J951kYyPyG5zxOyLRIXB8Nlji9bq0rad3khv_4X7fEcagSi1jOP9THsKsEQ1FOiKA0BXvs8A3ZqbyIZPl0NcLmNs43pSl69ZpUdYiMRBdzygt9cQLTOyD88B1PK3GlqWJ-wA2gEmVI/w640-h480/q15.jpg)
I guess in a world war, one can't have too many officers. They take the highest casualties.
for support, here is the crusader light machine gunners blister, also resin.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_e2KxE2VBz90oQ6neCT1yzQEMlykSE4y58pDtC6ZCXQaZ1zjEQ9lIFUNXcplzczRuklyKtXc2S1HtRT-ynTHFfeawGKnJB3tFJDzvBwnadQhyphenhypheniLaRu7sE-5PrxpG-_vcscGKZLo5nVSZW3CZsaXZaYr9cC4B1uuKX_uHyB19yDbhCP7eP5hT__eKRehA/w640-h480/q6.jpg)
This wraps up the crusader faction (for now). Here's everybody:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1NIh4oj9dX7e8vHI6X7gHQBe30tkFW9ozyy8-WfavyGxOHqijuRxgcgRkIhAiLcS1ek0NdbDn1Pcxn0QaJ1wrwfxpqA7ETf2A2bg-3XTo6VjJm1XN6r2J42SYGU2ppY9J3H2x1bMrMYceSR7vatf0t2Cqpr_l9LaJZkVkraO3Cb5uCcvF4wWJzuLnuC0/w640-h480/q17.jpg)
with the miniatures all done it'll be time to move on to a suitable Quar-ish terrain board.
Thanks for looking. If so inclined, there are more pics and stupid jokes on my blog:

-
Horseie-puppy-people what a sight to behold!!! Those will come in handy leaping the Quar across trenches and no man's land!
-
Great progress!
-
Excellent.
I love the patterns on the noses.
-
Thanks Gentlemen. 😀
The Cadier are indeed done strange looking creatures. As I say in my blog post: something out of a Jim Hensen fever dream.
The Quar skin splotches are hard to do. When I do them right they come out like cool tiger stripes or giraffe spots or Rorschach blots. When I get it wrong it looks like cute polka dots. 😀
-
Looking good!! 👍
-
Thanks GG. Appreciate it. 😀
-
Very tempted to get some of these.Just seen that this shop is stocking the Wargames Atlantic range now and they have the game box,the two trooper boxes and blister pack figures available.Free Postage on orders over £30.Trooper boxes for £27 each.
https://em4miniatures.com/collections/wargames-atlantic
Been watching video's of the game and setting on Youtube the past few Days. Some nice painting guides on there.
I did fancy going in on the 15mm Kickstarter that they did but funds were not around at the time.
At least now i can get them in the UK and dont have to worry about customs fee's and such.
-
I believe that the 15mm are still available on the zombiesmith site.
I also think there will be more 15mm releases. I think I read that somewhere in the facebook discussion.
-
Hi Everyone,
Or at least the 4 people who still might read this. :)
But here is the thing we all adore, more Quar progress.
first, I've done a pair of Crusader Snipers:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRNKdtcUBHcZL3AM9vwL1kRItr6H6fE670m0Zp5up2Tkw1K8Wfxb1ma2hmjvRhxrE9mkJMSxzQKK9U_d7lIDvzRqdTtQUYe6ptADFSm4qTRtsLjUeYD3IOySjOuEZYpQVQ4lmKyJp4Q5zoabSYfY4dEGNK5Wt-yTrKtN2P0OmW7SmIKqlCg4pK7g4_fGU/s4032/snipah2.jpg)
I always like to say the word snipper like sniPAH!
But my big update is that I started the terrain boards. This is my first crack at doing terrain boards. Inspired by Quar artwork like the trenches from Tales of the Breach, the idea is to have a ridiculously big trench with more normal WW1 style trenches branching off it. The plan is for a 4x6' table made of 3 sections that are 2x4'.
first I made the 2x4 sections. I cut and attached some battens to the underside of the 2x4 sheet of MDF
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi56X3zsGSCZYA5D9mWJQQVZGSZgLCFYyfspPdzjqHdXliS6Jk5pOUui4l_CyB7Cz85c042L8ykYQb0wwM4xnF0dkMR3sWbV0tRtrHjgZpQw-qheDmtc35zLEyrm4fg7b6n8duLfA6joqSVg-UmVySgYfRhHyWx4VIcL8JaPBq4Jaw12Ypzm0C1DQy2hyphenhypheng/w480-h640/unnamed%20(1).jpg)
All 3 sections constructed.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR337kJSNmA0b1y6-OCrD4H1tXtYY-5DOrBvUwLLL8SbuYmdfwJZ9IymfSshpdG-YrZ3vAfZwGamjjb-94H74r03RqPnbZRJaZxkPoa64xyDcKha7TJA8Rp0RK84pUHWImsZc177KQ4IGRqqpxqqE5rgtqFyIlad_wGDssL6CLsgPxJKNtfbKbltIJGKQ/w640-h480/unnamed%20(2).jpg)
That's not an exciting picture but I'm not an especially handy person so I'm proud of my construction.
The trenches will be made out of insulation foam, easily found here in the states.
The large trench will 6" wide (ish) and 2" deep. Here it is carved out and the outline for a smaller trench being drawn in. I put down some Quar miniatures to test the size.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsrHVFINVUsNKG5eI3k1r_z2x7gP0tKz8HQ-9BI0lzJohLMfVV9qCCTL1POCKQHL9yKJYzmgwzRAktz43F4Q4EBe-97T7yTVSGbSk2b5HRZ2Llnp-MLMx273jMrx9kqFEZzd-TZMV3nbnHNXVPHBqGrxCKix_xfFzTvtLwok0Rp_Hnaz0woHr0XYKx_1Q/s4032/unnamed%20(7).jpg)
also the hieght. Quar are a little shorter (and pudgier) than normal 28mm, so I found that trenches about 1/2 an inch in height were about right, so they can poke their cute snouts over.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAbdeClmdmV5qdpOXj_he_kqPui156IUe-pMJrKkD2C2oxBcmPludO_AAkvSHDht-RtVbv-I8h72SJW_-5j6ve-qKB42Sn2JBfj6gN1rkYy8NTepsg65YoHcEh_EMkmmb8pXQdstE7b5PtYaHqLIR5IuiEakIIRNYzhcYS-M-RvZKHKjzbJ4BQFRNxOPg/w640-h480/unnamed%20(11).jpg)
lastly, for a way down into the main trench I carved out some stone stairs.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFXZkXAvIi9HerEcVtb47P_ZcxZ3aQfimKitIMSA-m5ZlxaDOkAz-XCTDzVk6j7DW3tZNL7-Mipq-8S55b7mz54F572wEESBQcP_D1ckf0_cIHdBWSwyfmA5edaJUUPdcjeSb1WZCeK10kfni397w0a-JXJnJJcxFddiHTd_BRiLRnKFh6_eVI5z1qchc/w640-h480/IMG_3163.jpg)
Here is the first terrain board as it stands now.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqO9HW5CR20pkCHZ2FRa-kZvwI-_0LFh5_nWEDP9JJPw0TJB-RmxpA9rTNsKqJi1M00fMqiSk4hJW7zhmdv1AnU22AGmwv0m6dUlDjZIaJU577Gn6Mw7jLQvRUCtxUuZXD6frQWYqV0Hky2C5jWjAinQIrVhlDXox17J5bHBNWj0fYYJvRihSLvvdZM1E/w640-h480/IMG_3164.jpg)
Its a fun project. though it has required several trips to the hardware store.
if inclined, there are more pics and longer descriptions and more silly jokes on the blog:

Nice snipers.
The idea of the big trench is interesting (I have forgotten what they are called).
-
Thanks Ultra.
More to come.
I don’t know what a big trench would be called either. :)
-
...
I don’t know what a big trench would be called either. :)
Looking good.
Possible names - support / travel trench or reserve trench. If it connects two sets of trenches it could be a 'switch'.
Your patience with the sand bags is gob-smacking TBH.
-
Nice work all round 8)
-
Great job on those! Josh has done such a brilliant job with the Quar and I love love love how people are painting them up, especially your Crusader snipers!
Not sure if it is the lighting or the painting but some of the colors look a bit dark, especially the metals. Is that on purpose? Or just how they are turning out?
-
Thanks.
@SI: thanks!
@Andrew: Travel trench works really well. In my mind I was calling it "The Great Trench" to match the Croftyran Great Wall.
though I don't see any sandbags. I think you're maybe thinking of the trench board made by Anton in another part of the forum. After he has spent 20 ish hours doing sandbags I'm not sure I have the same desire.
@Erik: I agree, the Quar are lovely figures and I've grown quite fond of the whole project. About the colors: totally on purpose and accident. :)
truth is; I'm not a very good painter or photographer. So probably a combo of bad pictures and just how they are coming out. My painting is limited to basecoat, highlight, and wash in army painter dark tone.
-
and back to the trenches!
the second 2x4 board will feature a large stone bridge that crosses the great trench and should make a nice objective.
I happen to have one here that I made years ago out of Hirst Art mold:

Note to self - only open one thread at a time not dozens (blush).
Apologies - still impressed with your work (esp the 'horses') and do not blame you missing out sandbags. I bought lots for WW2 games many many years ago and swear I still come across them in dark corners!

nice start on the boards

Very nice start.

Thanks all. Another update coming soon.
I appreciate you reading. 😀

Hello All,
ready for another exciting update on the Quar?
Well pull up a chair. You get the whole seat but you only need the edge.
First, some more painted Quar. Everybody likes more painted Quar!

These are my first of the hard plastics. I found getting the arms in the right places to be....challenging. You kinda need 3 arms to do it right.
Secondly, Work on the This Quar's War Terrain Boards (say that 5 times fast if you can) has progressed.
The plan for the 3rd 2x4 board required another bridge. I don't remember why, I made the plan in what seems a long time ago now. but we'll assume that past me knew what future me wanted. IN any case, I needed a small foot bridge and as I didn't have one laying about I made one.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJATGEycwF_KUfsr_DTbZBzuFQlmTtIpwHe2gF1mSzYC4f9z-xlLWDlCMTuYYIH4rlICYSxgMjDhPmuGbLIhko5fcQ4JRaBP6mzClc9OcKNMk80rgLsO5SsleQlAAy_UplZnt76iCXmyvdarQWVXex3Vth1CpAeJJDtSdULlTDXHNtLlyTz98GxehoEOk/w640-h480/IMG_3269.jpg)
This was made from my trusty Hirst Arts "fieldstone bridge" mold. It matches the other one and is 2" wide.
I wanted the bridge done first so I could fit the foam to it's span. I thought it would be easier that way.
The plan also called for a rocky cliff face so while I was casting up the Hirst Arts bricks I also casted up some rock faces using rock molds.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxcW7Djr_B2F2zzJ5nxNAPEzKCmqC07TiO1InlySXUbcw4HPqOoOqicNL6BT1vpKCns_PnL5BjsKt_mneNTDugFKosU42klnZluC83LoZTnJ9jmfa-G6mZDuhYX_ZYB-_fSCSIbSyGvirzCoJrVYJL8XsTNC5YIF4ugaw3pkeokgkTnEV2_RMrECdWhYs/w640-h480/IMG_3264.jpg)
Above, the third board all cut out and bridge and rock mold in place. It'll also feature a T junction in the Great Trench that runs along the whole 6x4 board. There's also U shaped gun trench / more traditional WW1 style trench in place.
Hopefully I can glue this all down this weekend and I'm very excited to hit the next phase where I can begin to make this all start to look like actual terrain versus just stuff glued together.
Thanks for reading.

Always great to see more Quar
-
Thanks Scotty. I appreciate it. 😀
Everyone loves a Quar.
-
The yellow spots on the blue skin are a great touch. Haven't seen that before. Really like it. :-)
-
Thanks ErikB. I think it looks pretty good too. Though I still struggle with the splotches over all.
but anyway! I haven't been painting all the Quar just for the fun of it, because painting is not that fun.
I actually played a game of This Quar's War using the Rhyfler's Pocketbook.

Great blog, Stew!
For those tiny yellow dots, you might get some nice contrast by placing a dab of brown first and then the yellow dot on top, leaving some of the brown around the dot. Doesn't have to be perfect. This gives a sense of depth.
Check out the Eichenlaub camouflage, like here, to get a sense of the effect: https://d31sxl6qgne2yj.cloudfront.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/20200701101418/German-Eichenlaub-Autumn-Camo-thumb.jpg
For the Quar it would be dots as opposed to camo.
If you are in the Bay Area in CA then I can help you out with the painting. I don't wargame much but I love the painting part.
-
Thanks ErikB.
I know what you’re talking about and I’ve seen Quar with similar. I’ll try it out on the next batch.
I’m not in the Bay Area but the Sacramento Area (that’s 2 hours away for anyone not familiar with Ca and reading this).
I’ll be your area for Pacificon in 2 weeks though.
-
I love Sacratomato. Friggin' hot, though.
My grandparents lived there, on Land Park Drive, a mile or two from the Tower store. I have many fond memories of visiting them when I was little (though I had no idea of distance back then so I could be off re: Tower).
I remember a wonderful park with all sorts of rides, including a train that went around the whole park, and pony rides. I still remember my favorite pony, Trigger, from when I was, maybe seven years old.
Anyway, I've painted up quite a few Quars. If I can offer some support I would be glad to.
And you know Josh Q. (Mr. Quar) lives in Oakland, right? He's pretty cool, worth looking up and communicating with.
-
Thanks Erik.
You're thinking of a place called "Funderland." My oldest has probably outgrown it, but i should take my youngest back fora visit now that I think about it.
for Anyone: Next update will be soon. making some good progress this weekend.
-
Funderland.... :D
Map looks right but the rides are all different, which is understandable. I'll ask my aunt when I see her this weekend. :)
-
Placed my first order for some Quar.Three blister packs to get me started.
-
Also could of been Fairy Tale Town. right across the street....
anynays...back to exciting miniature stuff.
@ Manic: I'm sure you'll like them. They're adorable but at the same time, deadly serious.
as you see below with my newly painted quar: Some Royalists.

The one in the smurf hat is supposed to be an NCO (or Yawdryl in Quar-ese). He has an SMG. All my other Yawdryls of this faction are waving swords about (like an good leader does) so to give this guy a sword I raided my plastic Gripping Beast Dark Ages bits. This sword is from the Viking sprue. I'm sure they won't mind. They're a generous and forgiving people.
but more fun:
I've completed the base constuction of the great trench terrain boards. each is 2x4, and here is a pic with the upcoming exciting features:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLs_6patJgvD9ksxoyZshdc5UR32TKFGD3Vy62JMfanarnWBDEvGrYX6tmJbpeXQG9dLc2xgSgA1vbm-RsUtx4-5OKyjShjzTgfmcV7iBw6rB8asSUbyd39MMweq6MU4aFchlrmSAL85q6Kv6U3ske3R3dS8oUTwl5pJTv5KrNHtkRjbXFifP6RY92kew/w640-h636/table%20progress.png)
so the next natural step is to start adding the wooden planks to all the walls and trenches....

making good progress on the boards
-
Thanks Scotty. Appreciate it.
-
Nice update on the terrain boards.
I also like the painting on your Quar.
My order arrived and they look great.Only one blister pack had bases. Also got another blister pack so only two more to go for the initial release.Got the starter game due soon.
-
Thanks Manic.
I do believe the earlier blister packs were sold without bases and the more recent ones now have bases included.
Also I think the older blisters were siocast or whatever and the newer ones are a better resin.
to be honest, it didn't matter to me because I use magnetic bases for my figures.
I hope you enjoy the quar. recently a new addendum to the rules was released as well. all can be had for free on the rhflyer website.
I recently hosted a 2v2 game at a local convention. It went well. people seemed to like the rules and the silly figures.
The set up:

after I finish up this next batch of painting quar miniatures, I'm gonna nove over to some terrain. I'm getting tired of playing 'This Quar's American Civil War."
:) :)
-
Looks like you had a fun game
-
That looks good, I did think you had particularly wiggly trench lines from the overhead view (yes they are ACW snake fencing).
Glad to hear they have changed the material, I did find the original resins hard to work with (mine are still waiting for basing...).
I use Renedra 25mm flat round bases, blended in with Milliput.
-
Great looking table and miniatures.
I will be interested to see what terrain you come up with for your games.
Got 12 Crusaders from the starter set all glued together now. Also the three blister packs to go with them are done. This morning i have cleaned the bodies off of the Coftyran and glued them together and onto bases.Heads have also been cleaned off and just the weapons to sort out Tomorrow they they will be completed.
Managed to order two packs of the trench raiders to go with the gun blister pack and only need to get the Officer pack to complete the initial release.
A box of each faction miniatures will also be on the list to expand the forces.
-
Thanks guys. And I do hope you’ll enjoy your own Quar adventures.
I find the assembly of the plastic figures to be….fiddly.
The best order I have found is bodies, arms, head, backpack, and then anything else. 😀
Quar are going to be an excellent opportunity for some scratch building terrain. After some ubiquitous generic fences that aren’t snake style, I have ideas for large termite / ant hills, bug boxes, and might even try my hand at a house. After all, I have all this foam and a Hotwire cutter.
Painting update Coming soon for any interested.
See you soon.
-
Nice progress. 8)
-
I like the paths - is it cork by any chance?
The thin cork around here is normally rolled with the flat being tiles with chunky lumps of cork glued together.
-
Thanks all. 😀
@Andrew. The roads are purchased from Wargamer’s Terrain.
I don’t think they’re cork but it’s a very nice product.
-
Hi again!
If anyone is interested in the rules for Quar, you can find a VERY detailed walk through on me blog...

First up: The Coftyrans have pulled ahead in the arms race on my hobby desk as they now have an Actual MMG

I've also added some Coftryan Rhyflers.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg3dTlVCH-TU0EKm8n3rrs6EJb2m_GGhSFQ_Ciqs8ySApTfQcFhQR5kVRTTpA9p0-UwGXizToJ_BARd83Fa2Kf_KQAWStwUQcxw6wJkkEV_j03flaWlJFxpBAaWJawYEMNnatwfDidOItW9NTynefrdY1vTkDdOETDYD_3pr1tSCh-hPxCscCz87duUSgc=w640-h480)
On these dudes, I tried to do the thing were instead up just one color of the splotch, I did an outline in one darker or lighter color with a different one in the middle. It came out OK I think.

I’m slowly becoming more and more tempted :-* . Thank you for the rules dissection I was about to ask if someone could give me a good example of gameplay: so I’m going to sit and go through your post and the linked videos now. Maybe I need to find someone with 15mm Quar they need to offload. My biggest issue so far has been the fact it’s a whole world and has its own terminology and language (which has made brief dips into it slightly clunky for me) - what do I need to read to best understand the setting?
Thanks (apologies if I asked obvious or previously asked questions)
Andrew

Great collection Stew. All nicely painted too.You will soon be over 100 miniatures i am sure.
Just cleaned another 12 bodies off this morning.Arms and other bits to clean off next.
Looking forward to the Fidwog release.

My biggest issue so far has been the fact it’s a whole world and has its own terminology and language (which has made brief dips into it slightly clunky for me) - what do I need to read to best understand the setting?

Thank you UVS! Apologies for the basic ask but I figured asking would be quicker (I’d found the rulebooks) the world of Alwyd is exactly what I needed. I’m even tempted to buy a few sprues of the 28mms (even though I’d normally choose 15mm - not as easy to obtain sadly) just to enjoy painting them.

UMS is right on with the links. Beneath; don’t let the world intimate you, though I do know what you mean. I feel the same way about Naps.
If it helps; no one takes it too seriously and the vocabulary becomes more familiar over time. The book Western Iron is also full of fun fluff. And if in the states Gator games I think sells half boxes.
Manic; thanks a lot. Everyone is looking forward to Fidwog. They look cool. I’m going to be focusing on Crusaders and Coftyrans as I gear up for larger battles. But I do have some of the partisans as it turns out. 😀
Thanks again anyone who is reading and enjoying this thread. 😀
-
Thank you Stew. I was struggling (and I know it was probably the morphine making it harder lol ), I read through the World page after UVS’s suggestion (again don’t know how I’d missed it) and it helped a little but I’d also missed the fact that there’s an intro in the Rhyflers PB (downloaded but only flicked through) and that was what I was looking for.
The scale and setting are excellent and the game looks right up my street so I’ve mentally added it to my crimbo list (the starter isn’t expensive just more than I can spare currently) and intend to raid my sofa’s unfathomable depths for loose change to buy a few sprues to tide me over and generate motivation. I’m struggling generally with my hobby and functionality and this may be exactly the thing to keep me afloat.
Thank you both, much appreciated,
Andrew

Hello Quar Fans,
There's at least a couple of us on this forum, but I'm assuming that we speak for the silent masses!
My Quar's War project continues with some terrain that I's like to share:
First up; some Quar Trees:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7nSw2idVhyphenhyphenglHuGtdICFgRLe4R0Ll7dPb9rfy7b9FpsMXtDCDJrdVmauKGSKUPhC0fMEIVanKRgapyy99UTM09x77w3i5q2OGpVlSPd2ITvNpLsS27Sc5xQgwxQ1d9Wsx1ZLsfhccYQTZjQDt4qvmPwPNO2rAn94JegEbv9MMN_uHMGNB5A_vs444FWg/w640-h480/IMG_3454.jpg)
It's not like alien trees, but lots of the artwork in the Quar books features what I call F,O.U.Cs. that's Flora Of Unusual Colors.
Trees are easy enough to make, so I made some in reds and pinks / purples.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgafckhYdt3E52eA58OiYLZKv21r27oLfut0zek9_g19b80s8TtPB_-WttQH28JdYq1GqcWnTPfd_NKFcSsl_fyj0vRzZWUvQq59XBWyTE782zwmdrFvkEpgwLsK3NKeOFKr0eQK9-aAcdS-BAusNVwpayZJdL9IN0dJCcoXK6OZGpxnpB1xVpUUeKp1ko/w640-h480/IMG_3455.jpg)
The idea is not to have whole forests of these, but more like accent trees, like hair highlights. Just something to give the table a little 'alternate' feel.
Also: I've made progress on my This Quar's War Trench Terrain Board (don't try to say that 5 times fast, it'll tie the tongue).
on the last 2x4 board I've completed the planking:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinC4kpCu3rWIhDLNHXIQRZoi2h0bzkKPBpdOScvRB9uq7SItjZW9S8Z0KeA3LVldZ-TjF1qKgtFw7YZ-YZV4qklYghZHgWkvSyzeZB6SKROmaMtOkbmj1Z13uEC4gZ7PrEXTKV9uF2bxOcwxM4vsqv4AVzyhEYIQUMpUfIldVZiPCKVWXcu3K8gGP5j0U/w640-h480/IMG_3465.jpg)
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlPDGrsyKG4bsBSTWjNi5zDivO4Do1pZsfgk6ZXA-f0pkvSeKAmcOcR4W8EXqksNx1ts_JMaoGJj2lhA1MKQVD07cyMzIWJwNq-8fpzTqrKjKQxOIN8sCqB9z5XDeaH2DcZg12JLfDFhszvSKNE2kPlB6icZw65h6Z4sHZ8_h57YBw6fy5d8ExpyumMYY/w640-h480/IMG_3466.jpg)
All 3 of the boards together will look something like this as a 4x6 table.

It's a slow project. I kinda thought I would of finsihed it by November but now looking like next year. Good thing there's not really a deadline.
If interested, there are a few more pics and lame jokes on the blog

That is looking amazing Stew, the board is just awesome and the colour of the trees matches the setting perfectly (in my head). You may have started (shoved) me down a rabbit hole :D I have 6 of each faction that I’m working on - models are great just wish there was more clutter/pouches on the sprues.
Thank you
Andrew

Nice trees.
The board looks good.
-
Thank you guys.
Sorry to shove you down a rabbit hole. If it makes it any better, I came down here willingly, fool that I am.
Though it is kinda nice down here. 😀
Some game pics coming up soon!
-
Hi everyone.
I'd like to share some in game pics. I was lucky enough to pull off something of a "Quar Weekend" where I had two games two days in a row.
First I hosted a game at a small local convention.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixPxL9bYqrlGUyB4IGiRxsz4fKIBoaJ5Io8sXqeZbqDDemxq6RU4rg5dz3SqxXAM9giOVIvlgh-kCBZgH137LSCkggS1SyTP9OS35SNa-bN4BPxZ0bC-xydMerLqxj21QM_ae9R_A6TC0gVFn8d2qD2qQG3Ej90wOvC2pDX1FIRc0EeGzcmqKoQDP2xrg/w640-h480/IMG_3481.jpg)
here is a pic of the set up.

The set up in my house:

Both games were 2vs2 affairs held on a 3x4 table. Each player had 300 points. I'm starting to really did that set up for multiplayer games, though it kinda just works like two 1vs1 games playing side by side.
-
That looks excellent :o scenery is looking great.
Andrew

-
Thanks Andrew.
The trees do a lot of work adding done Quar-ness to the battlefield but some more unique items would also be helpful. I kinda got an idea of a barn / farm scene to work on. 😀
-
I really like the layout and those colourful trees certainly add a some Quar-ness to the game
-
Thanks Scotty. The trees are a nice start in the right direction. 😀
-
now where was I? oh yes, doing a thread. I've been neglectful. but better this thread than the children. right?
maybe. :)
anywhos, first, time for some painted Quars:

With the Playtest rules for Tractors (tanks) being released for This Quar's War: Clash of Rhyfles, it seemed time to upgrade. The Coftyrans have the only Anti-tank / anti-infantry gun so far in the form of a small thing officially called "RCO m60" which is short for "Royal Coftyran Ordnance Field Howitzer Model 60."

CoR continues to be one of most favorite favorite games.

Thanks to all that take the time to read this thread. Happy Holidays, Happy New Year.

That is a nice table.
Nice to see your progressl
By the way, the Crusaders have the Splagen pitot mortar for anti-tracter work.
I have only just noticed the detail on one of the painted ones

Thanks UVS.
Yes, I have some torpedo dudes, just not painted yet.
What I really want to complete is more terrain.

In a painting furry these two dudes got painted all over them. Not sure what I'll use them for. 2 of the old metal sculpts for Partisans.

Nicely done, would look good as some partisans

Thanks Scotty. These are older metal partisan sculpts.
I have some more around here somewhere. But not enough for a full squad.

Stew, Was the local game in Auburn by chance? Dave Partak's gathering?

Stew, Was the local game in Auburn by chance? Dave Partak's gathering?
Hi LeadFool,
As a matter of fact it was. Nicely spotted.
Great little con.
-
Thanks Scotty. These are older metal partisan sculpts.
I have some more around here somewhere. But not enough for a full squad.
You could mix in a few newer models and with a little conversion make them look like deserters to fill out a squad

your trench board looks like it would make an excellent Creevish Suddigffyrdd "trench highway"
art from the "western iron" lore book:

More to come soon.

ack! I've been letting this thread fall behind. Not that it really matters. It's like when parents tell their kids that it's not a race.

One of the newer blister is a farmer with a giant rhino looking beetle. I also added a on old metal farmer looking dude and some old metal puff pigs. All these dudes have a very specific job of being on the game and doing nothing but looking nice.
like so:

Thanks for replies everyone.
and now Quar fans; a long awaited update.
whaddaya mean no one was waiting? Sheesh.
I don't usually link back to my blog, but in this case it must be done, as I took a lot of pictures at the recent Quar Campaign day. too many to link back here bc I am inherently lazy and have big sausage fingers while my computer has small keys...
so for lots of pics and hilarious commentary, please see:

but in order to not be rude, I should link some pictures. So here are some pics of the thing that everyone adores, painted Quars.

I like the look of your Toulmore Quar, nice and colourful. The games on display look great
-
Those look very good.
-
Good to see a lot of quar in action, including the Gloam tank.
-
Really like the Toulmore, Stew. Who are the chaps wearing some kind of fish over their heads and backs in the pics?

Thanks everyone!
@Andrew. Those dudes with the fishes are the Gloam Hyn.
They’re a subset of Royalist. They live in a swampy area.
They are…unique.
-
@stew lol thank you - always something new to learn about the quar!

Hello Quar Fans.
I've got something rather big to share.
Big in that it's a large size, not big as is a big accomplishment.
But I've completed the "This Quar's War Trench Terrain Boards."
to set the tone, let us look at the inspiration for the project:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOCm1YgMlbzjsQ_qO7F-nSbuK7ItyNtImQVNob55ZVNs-UcHcn9YTNNsY7FU9p0h5DEuZTSAZlaFt2cR_3J91iYoxfDtTzNg71X3ZfLN59bZfpJ_8VGT6KuxcSDo_hQIGu38iQeFLqUnsxQKB1_oWtAlV-SmoCoN92kcaxtBv3QdEMnyhIdqSUMIW4l70/w640-h420/begin.PNG)
There we go. And now my completed project:
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfzwi415O7K7ZTGUkED49vYmRJyHw7Gle2gp6wpLiTrK8Iq_ZA3udSrta4VQUDLsUfi122JczTbXt2NUZekg8N2-T2Bu2TdGcyU9bhDSNWgc8JTEMAJh5N8_HjqVUH8Blx-Uds2j83CnWiGf7GkEiUkjGGDTAixlYt8tpLJBSerToeBaocCCAtFE1q-5E/w640-h480/IMG_4042.jpg)
each board is 2x4, for a total of...4x6. Yeah, thats right.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXQAC4EcAPerRGAEQwSXkv792ocDa7bpUDbilqNwW59F4AGHh_NqA7tmwoGXmJkFAI8TT1D2P69TFXlGwQwOrTvQ32E1KVbF9E05H0roM8h1o4D-C6LwRV9u4X96QFAx8qNlvVlNp2Xt6QTc2Kw3bQCX9IswNqAr0bF6opRPiAIclULUr7yxvHt6RZ7Ug/w640-h480/IMG_4047.jpg)
in my mind, Alwynd is a colorful place. I tried to recreate that. I am rather pleased with how the flocking came out...

shall we see it with some terrain? thought you'd never ask..

I am, really proud of it. It's my first attempt at such a thing. Like a new father I took way too many pictures.
They can be seen at

I'll be carrying this thing off to a convention this weekend to get some actual games on it.
Of course, there's all this custom scatter terrain in my head that is yet to be built. So more to come.
Thanks for looking.

That looks amazing stew! I particularly like the pink trees. The board looks like it should be great fun to play on.

Well done!!!
-
Very nice.
-
Stew, the final boards look superb
-
Great work, really follows the look and feel of the source artwork (which rather reminds me of railway cuttings more than trenches).
-
Thanks everyone. I appreciate it.
😀
-
what happens when it rains?
That is a drained river/canal right?
-
lol.
No, it’s a trench highway. 😀
-
Hopefully good drainage or it will fill up.
Now will a Baliog fit along the roads and under the bridges?
-
lol.
No, it’s a trench highway. 😀
Oh… the very permanent looking bridges threw me….
-
well, it's a fantasy like trench highway. in my mind it's a trench highway that has been around for awhile....
:)
-
greetings everyone!
I managed to finish the boards in time to take them to a local convention. after all, I didn't make these things for nothing.
the managed to hold up well to the trails of transport...

I hosted 3 games on them over the weekend, All multiplayer and as luck would have it, got to play myself in all the games due to an odd number of players. Hooray!
so here are some pics of the boards in action, in game pic without context so kinda boring but here they are all the same...

Hi Stew, A lovely visual combination of This World AND Other Worldly. The pink trees are strangely compelling and just work! Surely carnage could not happen in such a place :-)
-
Great looking table Stew, well worth your effort
-
Very nice boards.
-
Very nice! I love the bridge in particular!
I'd love to do some houses with the architecture seen in Qualtieri's art .... Maybe someday...
-
Thanks everyone! Appreciate it
Hi Norm!!!
Yes, the trees do a lot of the heavy lifting for the Otherness. So much so that I made like 5 more. 😀
