The annual painting challenge on the Plastic Crack Podcast inspired me to make a start on a Sassanid Persian army that has been in the boces for a few years. The lead is a mixture of Aventine, Gripping Beast and A&A. Wide spread use is planned of LBMS shield and banner transfers. I am painting these in response to a monthly theme as part of the challenge and am using the 28mm figures as a sanity balance while I paint huge numbers of Adler 6/8mm Napoleonics in anticipation of Leon shutting the doors on his wonderful 6mm ranges mid next year.
First up is the grand daddy - the Kings elephant. I scoured the internet for inspiration on painted examples. I have used various sources but leaned heavily on Phil Hendry's wonderful website and his rendition of the elephant.

Next up I'll put some shots of the run of the mill spearmen.

Lovely work. I too have a large-ish Sassanid 28mm army but nearly all Gripping Beast which to be fair I think are more from the 5-6th centuries. However I couldn't resist the Aventine "command elephant" which fits nicely with the Gripping Beast examples. One of my next projects will be to paint my Aventine 6th century Roman/Byzantine army which is currently sitting in a box somewhere.
-
Nothing short of phenomenal. So the detail on the flag and saddle-cloth (or whatever you call it for an elephant) are transfers?
Not my period at all, but I'm currently reading Tom Holland's Shadow of the Sword, which encouraged me to take a look.
-
Yes they are by Little Big Men studios. Good look "Shadow of the Sword". I read it when it first came out and found it a "tough read"!
-
Fabulous brushwork Richard
-
Looking good! I really like the patterned tunics.
-
Absolutely fantastic, saw it already on the PCP and like they said, the pose makes it even more imposing. Definitely going to follow this thread :)
-
The run of the mill spearman's shield bears the blazon of the Schola Gentilium, a mounted guard unit.

I quite like that book- I've read it twice so far. :D

Thanks for all of the comments.

Beautiful work on that elephant. I love those GB spearmen, too, globe hats and all. I painted about 120 of them . . . !
Any particular game/system you're building this towards?

Great looking army, I really like the pattern on the elephant riders' clothes.

Thanks for the comment.
They are done for Impetus. We play various Ancient armies on a regular basis always with Impetus 2.

Lovely mate, for the foot Royal guard pick up the aventine pieces they are fantastic.

Yep - I've got them in the box. Even if the Impetus lists has nothing for them.
-
Love the foot! Looking forward to seeing where the project goes from here :)
-
Next up is an Aventine Sassanid 'Hero' and drummer.
I'll use them as a sub-unit command base in my Impetus army. The raised area was made with a Woodland Scenics plaster rock mould. Again the shield is an LBMS transfer.

Excellent paintjob and project !!!

Fantastic as always :-*

Next up is my first unit of cavalry for the Sassanids. I have a large number of cavalry to paint - A&A, Aventine and Gripping Beast. These ones are Aventine and once agaion have the LBMS shield transfers applied.

WOW :o
Those guys are very colorful, are those shields hand painted or are those decals?
-
Persians allow one to get out all one's artistic juices. Are those colors fuschia, ... and periwinkle????
They are seriously nice looking. I did some Aventine Eastern Persians from this range and they are fantastic figures.
-
Very nice painting !!! I liké thé base too !!
Nikkobourges et
-
Oh yeah, that base is really awesome!
-
Very nice. I need more Sassanids like a hole in the head but I might get some of these ( plus other stuff) before Aventine packs up next year.
-
Fantastic brushwork on those Richard
Cheers
Matt

Thanks to all for the great comments.
Tom, the shields are LBMS transfers with a painted rim to extend them to the edge of the shields.
and apphila - not sure about periwinckle but it is a Reaper triad that starts with a paint called "Burgundy Wine" - and no it tastes rubbish.
Richard

Gorgeous minis! Love the project so far ;)
-
Very impressive force so far. Nice and colorful.
-
A few more archers - very cheap units in Impetus ..... but not as cheap as the heavy foot that are coming :)

Richard, very nice. Are these archers from A&A? I never went with A&A as I didn't like what I saw in the photos on the website but these look fine. If they are A&A how do they fit size-wise with Foundry? I think A&A are a much forgotten range now but I love their 3rd century Roman and Palmyran figures.
-
... I might get some of these ( plus other stuff) before Aventine packs up next year.
Yes these are very nicely painted but I'm still reeling from you noting that Aventine is going to stop producing next year. Didn't know that. I've just checked their FB and it's true: Sep 2025 and it's over. Disaster.
-
Really nice work! As an aside, I likewise had no idea that Aventine is shutting down next year, glad I got a heads up somehow! They've been a real pillar in this community, hope they do okay wherever they take their lives next.
-
Absolutely wonderfull! I particularly like the Aventine cavalry, they look just great!

Those archers are A&A and they cleaned up and painted easily. I don't have any Foundry figures with me at the moment but will go to the basement and find some unpainted out over the next few days and put a comparison photo up.
I am thinking it is very likely that I will be getting an A&A 3rd centiry Roman army soon. And I had been looking at the Palmyrans also.
Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback.

I have been working on quite a bit of my Sassanid project and have a few new units to post.
First up is a unit of elephants - these are A&A Miniature elephants that I picked up in a bring and buy at the Partizan show when I was in the UK in 2019. They are heavy and I bought them in the second day of a 6 week holiday so had to carry them (and a bunch of other loot) for the next 6 weeks. On the kitchen scales yesterday they weighed in just under 800gm for the base.
In the Impetus lists there are two types of elephants with their strength points differing. I decided to put two elephants on the bases to designate the 6 VBU elephants and one elephant with supporting skirmishers on the 5 VBU bases.
Thanks for looking

And now two bases of heavy Cataphracts for the Sassanids. Again these are from the wondeful Aventine range.

Great work on those! The bronze alongside the other colours and the shields gives the unit a lot of visual interest.
-
Spiffing.
what a colourful bunch.
-
Excellent paintjob !!!

These are great. Are you going to get any of the new Resin Warfare Sasanids ? They look amazing to me

I wasn't aware of them - but am now and they do look very good. But I have more metal here than I will ever need ... or maybe not lol
-
Superb Richard, they look great how many bases are you planning of heavy cavalry. I have seven for my impetus army.
Cheers

Work continues on the Sassanids with a 'baggage' element for use with the Impetus rules.
This has been put together with the wonderful Aventine Miniatures Shapur set and uses a scenic piece that I printed based on an Assyrian ruin.

Next up will be some period based terrain.
Richard
-
That looks really good :-*
-
Very nice bagage element !!
-
And now for a piece of terrain that can be used with the Sassanids - but I have made it as a generic piece that could be used for much of the periods covered by the ancient armies that I have. I forget where the frain siloes are from - but the grain wheeel and oven are Grand Manner I think. The figures are from Eureka.

And one with both pieces of terrain together.

Great job on that terrain!

Very nice

This is very grand stuff indeed- lovely brushwork and nice flexing of the imagination with the basing :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thank you for the wonderful comments everyone.

And now a bunch of cavalry and foot units that I have ben working on over the past few months in the background.
Firstly, four bases of medium cavalry Clibinarii and two bases of light cavalry with bows (Aventine and Gripping Beast).
Then six bases of heavy foot levy spearmen (A&A Miniatures).

And finally the 'rest' - a skirmish base, another levy spearmen base and two archer bases (A&A, Gripping Beast and Aventine respectively)

As before, all are based for Impetus.

Sorry I have not been updating here for a little while.
So a quick family photo to show where I was in early December.
The colours in this second photo are not as good - but it gives more of a feel of the range of units painted this year.
Progress will slow down on this for a while as I focusing in a new Sudan project in 10mm for the next few months. As some wargamers do, I still have a box containing almost as much lead again as shown in these photos. I will certainly do quite a bit of it as I want more medium cavalry and elephants as examples. I have already done some dismounted knights and will put them up shortly.
-
Wow, great looking army. That's an impressive sight and well done on the terrain.
-
This is a great project and one that I have been and will keep following with enthusiasm.
Keep up the great work 8)
